Road to Sun & Moon: Demo Content

42 days until Sun & Moon release!

Some of our older readers maybe remember our Journey to X & Y and Road to Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire countdowns back in 2013 and 2014. Now, we’re with back Road to Sun & Moon!

What we want to see in the demo

I am just as excited as everyone else for the October 18th demo version of Pokémon Sun and Moon, but I really hope we don’t see a repeat of the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire demo.

The demo itself is likely already finished, as it has been rated in some countries, but here are some of the things I really hope the demo does right:

sharpedo-riding
Poké Ride is one of the hotly anticipated new features of Pokémon Sun & Moon

Demonstrates features of the game

Everybody already knows how a basic Pokémon game will function, so instead of a lame 10-minute section of basic gameplay, give us a taste of some of the new features like Z-Crystals, the Poké Finder, and Poké Ride.

Show off an actual area in the game

Obviously, we aren’t going to be able to traverse all of Alola in the demo, but in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire demo we were only allowed to see a small portion of Mossdeep City (which wasn’t exactly new), and a small demo area with no interesting features. If Game Freak wants to impress us, then they need to let us wander around a small chunk of Alola and explore to our heart’s content.

Don’t force Ash-Greninja down the player’s throat

While fans of the anime will likely be excited to get a Greninja, there is nothing about Ash-Greninja that demonstrates anything about what makes Sun and Moon interesting games.

Make it easy to get

sinnoh-underground-artwork
Make sure the demo is more difficult to mine than Skull Fossils were in Diamond and Pearl!

When the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire demos first came out, only those who received a code via the Pokémon Trainer Newsletter could download it, but that led to many players not being able to get the demo. Many players also had trouble activating their codes. Nintendo and Game Freak seemed to have thought ahead this time, though, as the demo will be up on the eShop for everyone. It will also be available on Nintendo’s website to alleviate server load for the eShop, and make it easier to download for those without a strong wireless internet connection.

Don’t make it easy to data mine

Because the demo for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire basically contained all the same files as the full game, tech-savvy fans were able to find out almost everything the games had to offer by data mining the demo. While more information about the games is exciting, Sun and Moon will be coming out just one month after the demo is released, it would be disappointing to have all the surprises ruined so close to release, as we have already had more leaks and spoilers than usual.

Those are just a few things Game Freak really should get right with the demo version of Sun & Moon and with less than two weeks remaining until the Pokémon Sun and Moon demo is released, we don’t have to wait much longer for our first hands-on peek at Generation 7.

  1. I finished Pokemon Black. That ending is better every time I play it. I just love N as a character. I love how he doesn’t just change his mind. He leaves to look inside himself and figure out what he thinks is right. It’s so much better than boring “Oh I was wrong now I am good yay” He is an actual complex character and I hope Generations does him justice

      • No, that would make him worse. Having a character that just flat out hates humanity and won’t change his mind is stale and boring. A character with no change is not a character because change is where character is found. N’s arch is an important one that many people in the world need to go through on their own. He realized that everything is not just Black and White (the titles of these games are perfect).

There isn’t just good and bad or right or wrong. It’s always gray. No one idea can stand correct and alone, many people can shape that idea into a truth. N’s refusal to accept the idea that it isn’t binary is what makes him compelling. His whole life he had been told that people are bad for pokemon and that they need to be separated to truly be free. He grew up believing that. But it isn’t true. There are people who do horrible things, but between the two working together, the world is changed for the better.

Having his ideas challenged was inevitable because having an idea standing alone is fragile. N learned that no one person is right or wrong and that’s important, not only for his character, but for life. You can’t just say humans are bad because it isn’t true. Humans work together, build, communicate, learn and just help each other. But they also attack, destroy, insult, and censor each other. No one side represents all of humanity. It isn’t binary. Just people who all grew up differently, saw different things, had unique experiences and argue for what they think is true. But that person isn’t correct on their own. It is a gray area. It isn’t black and white.

  2. Can’t wait for the data mine personally.

Since we’re getting the game a week late anyway, and no one will have the courtesy to not spoil it for the Europeans, may as well go all out with a data mine.

Besides I don’t really care about spoilers….bring on the information overload.

  3. Hey guys, I have a question related to the “new” UK trailer (which is an adaptation of the best JP one), hope anyone can answer: now that we know there are more than 4 trial captains (with the addition of Ilima in the trailer), how did people know which islands the other trial captains were in for sure?

    • This picture explains it pretty well. It’s officially confirmed that Mallow is the trial captain of Lush Jungle on Akala island, that Lana is on a boat and that Kiawe is atop a volcano.

For Lana, common consensus says she’s probably in the circular pools in the northwest of Akala island, since the colour of the pools matches the colour of the water (compare the picture of lapras when Pokéride was revealed to a picture of Lana in game).

For Kiawe, the only volcanos in Alola are on Melemele island and Akala Island, and the one on Melemele island appears to be dormant. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/86d678a4b80104ee8280c56f39ed3006da3740fc758dd16966dcd4490cba4fd8.png

      • Hmm, ok, I see that Mallow is confirmed, but I have two problems with this image:

1- couldn’t the place where you encounter Kiawe be on the southwest island, in those “black geyser” looking things?
2- the bridge in Lana’s screenshot has something that looks like sand on the other side, which is not present in the map; also’ the limits of the water are big boulders, when they should be those white walls.

Oh, and do people have any idea where sophocles will be encountered? I don’t think they would “waste” the observatory on the top of that mountain just for fighting the little guy (if we’re fighting the captains at all)

  6. I wanna go in the game blind like I did with Diamond and Pearl I had no idea what I was doing and all the Pokemon were a surprise. But I could live without Ash-Greninja.

  8. Only thing I really want to know in the (almost inevitable) data mine is the exact number of new Pokemon and Alola Forms. I don’t need to know what they all are… well, maybe the Alola forms, but I’d like a number. Also really curious if the final starter evo leak is true. I’ve already resigned myself to the leaks, so now it’d be kind of weird if they *didn’t* end up like that.
