You need a Pokemon with a LOT of HP
There are different ways to set up a Substitute successfully. You’ll want someone with a good amount of HP like Timo said. You can:
– Switch in to the Pokemon with Sub into battle with an advantage that forces your opponent to switch, so you can safely set up the Sub without damage.
– Use it against a Pokemon that will barely do any damage to you at all, so the Sub won’t break
– Use it against someone who won’t use an attacking move on you (T-Wave, Spore, etc.) because then you’ll safely be set up and won’t get any status ailment

maybe. see, game freak went about it all wrong. they gave mega evolutions to pokemon that didn’t need them. but look, mawile is viable, and kangaskhan is a lot more useful too!
Mawile is actually better of with the mega. Intimidate then Mega Evolve with Pure Power and added defenses make it better. And Megas were to make the already fully evolved pokemon to legendary status,
I said mawile is useful with its mega. but if they really wanted to make pokemon more powerful, on par with legendaries, they should have started with the pokemon that nobody uses at all! I just think it coulda been done better is all.
I do admit that they made strong pokemon even stronger, but giving the weak one Megas wouldn’t work in some cases. Mega Banette being an example.. He doesn’t have super high stats for a mega, or even a good stat redistribution. No bulk and just more attack. But Mega Evolution is at least a fun mechanic. 😀
but that’s just another example of how poorly executed it was. I see what you mean though, and is definitely a fun mechanic, and I don’t want it removed, my teams depend on it in some cases!
