Pokémon Stars: The 4 Facts We Know

With just over one more day until the big Nintendo Switch press conference (and don’t worry, we’ll be covering it!), fans are understandably excited. Pokémaniacs are particularly keen to hear about the rumored title that brings Pokémon Sun & Moon’s gameplay to the new console. While nothing has been outright confirmed, here is our mega list of rumors about Pokémon Stars (or Eclipse):

  • New Pokémon, Alolan Forms or Mega Evolutions: The game could add up to 20 (a number dropped by Laura Dale, gaming journalist) brand-new Pokémon or forms/evolutions to Alola. Whether or not these will be compatible with Pokémon Sun & Moon is currently unknown.
  • Improved Graphics: GameFreak didn’t skimp in Sun & Moon, but their successor will apparently utilize the Switch’s improved capabilities to breath HD life into Alola and its inhabitants.
  • Compatible with Sun & Moon: While the new Pokémon might not make it to your copies of Pokémon Sun or Moon, there will be ways to transfer existing Pokémon to Stars through an improved Pokémon Box app. Many are hoping that Pokémon caught in the console version will also be able to be transferred to the 3DS games as well.
  • Switch-Exclusive Features: Pokémon Stars will not only bring improved graphics to what we experienced in Sun & Moon, but will also introduce new features not found in the portable games. While not mentioned in the rumors, the animations found for walking Pokémon do hint that a companion system will be coming back to the overworld similar of that in Pokémon Yellow or HeartGold & SoulSilver.

This is mostly a compilation from various Twitter sources from gaming journalists, the initial leak, and also a Reddit AMA. The logo is an original creation of our wonderful moving and not official. If you missed it, don’t forget to check out for new Alolan Forms we’re hoping for!

Tell us in the comments about whether or not you expect Pokémon Stars to be revealed at the Nintendo Switch presentation!

    • Well, they’ve never really expanded the national dex (outside of megas) within the same gen… but yeah adding mons to the wild sounds like a decent idea!

300 is kinda weak for a regional dex these days…

Though I know the original and johto have 150+ and 250+ (?), respectively…

  1. Mega Evolutions would be the last thing I expect from a new game. New Alolan forms would be a good reason for bank taking so long to release. It’s almost like a flashback to 2014.

    • I’d be so pissed. It’s a very Nintendo thing to do to put a choke hold on something that everyone should be able to get without pre-ordering……

      • Agreed why can’t they just make higher quantities I mean they definitely know the people are willing to buy their products but why limit them

        • It’s because Nintendo is the ultimate troll. Both Sony and Microsoft don’t play these games and they sell fine, but Nintendo seems to think they need this kind of marketing in order to sell well. In the end it just pisses off the very people they’re trying to make their customers…..very frustrating…lol

          • And I’m just so scared that for the first time I’ll be trying to catch the preorder dragon’s tail (well second but I was too young to be a player) I just genuinely fear not getting one the first week of release, I fear that they’ll be snatched up by all the other greedy consumers in minutes of availability and they won’t restock for like a month… It’s just so frustrating

    • I look forward to seeing how his journey across Alola will progress. It’s obviously not going to go exactly the same as the game as he already met 4 of the Trial Captains and they don’t seem to be in any position of power at this time. Plus they completely ignored Ilima for the first trial. I hope they find a way to let him go on a proper journey without it being weird that those characters are missing form the traditional Trial Challenge.

  4. I kinda hoped they’d continue tradition and make the next games (presumably a SM third version or sequel, or Sinnoh remakes) of the 7th gen still on the 3DS. I feel like it’d be weird to break up the gen half on one console, half on the next.

Also if the new games add new Alola Pokemon, I’ll feel really sorry for anyone who bought a new 3 or 2DS just for SM. Sure GF can split up the gen or even region over 2 consoles, I just don’t think they should.

Of course, maybe Stars will be 8th gen? Or not a main game at all? Who knows.

    • I think it’s probably for the best that they jump to the Switch now. You say it’s a tradition to be late to the party, but I’d say it’s just due to how they planned out their games in the past. If they jump to the Switch now then they can be up on the times going forward. No longer will we have to play games on consoles that look worse than the current one just because they’re dragging their feet. I think of it as more of a clean break than anything else.

  6. So we have confirmation of another switch port. LEGO City Undercover. Yay, I guess? I guess It’s one more thing to fill out the game’s lineup, all be it a bit hollow given its pretty much coming to everything.

  7. Someone be a slightly uncomfortable looking and overly shiny Bill Trinin. It shouldn’t be hard to find a pic he looks like that most of the time
