Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation V

Hello everybody, we’re bringing you another Mascot Pokémon Showdown. The winner of last time is Giratina with 56%!
Now it’s time for Unova. Generation V released in 2010 in Japan and in 2011 in the rest of the world. This time, the generation consisted of four games: Black, White, Black 2 and White 2, and introduced amazing features, such as seasons, triple and rotation battles and the Pokémon World Tournament

Pokémon Black Version

black_en_boxartPokémon Black featured Reshiram, the Vast White Pokémon. It is a Dragon/Fire Pokémon that contains almost entirely out of fluff. By flaring the enormous engine-like tail, it can move the atmosphere of the world, which changes the weather.

Reshiram is the only Pokëmon known to be able to learn Fusion Flare and Blue Flare. Together with Zekrom, they were first shown on the Japanese and English website on the same date, which makes them the first two to be revealed worldwide simultaneously. Its name comes from ‘shiro‘ (白, ‘white’) and ‘re‘, which is just a softer sound than ‘ze‘.

Pokémon White Version

Pokémon White showcased Zekrom, the Deep Black Pokémon, white_en_boxarton its cover. He has a Dragon/Electric-typing with small black wings coming from its shoulders. Like Reshiram, Zekrom has an engine-like tail, but this one produces lightning bolts.

Zekrom has the highest Attack, Defense, and base stat total of all Electric Pokémon. It’s Ken Sugimori’s favorite Pokémon of Generation V. Its name is a combination of ‘kuro‘ (黒, ‘black’) and ‘ze‘, which is just a harder sound than ‘re‘.

Pokémon Black 2 Version

black_2_en_boxartOn the case of Pokémon Black 2 is Black Kyurem, a combination of Kyurem and Zekrom. It keeps Zekrom‘s arms, but is much more muscular than it. Its left arm, wing and lower jaw are completely covered in ice.

Black Kyurem has the highest Attack stat of all Ice Pokémon, and together with White Kyurem, it has the highest base stat total of all Ice-type Pokémon. Despite being larger than before it fused, it’s actually lighter than Kyurem. Its name comes from ‘rei‘ (冷, ‘cold’),  ‘kyuurei‘ (急冷, ‘rapid cooling’) and ‘rei‘ (零, ‘zero’).

Pokémon White 2 Version

Unlike all other generations, this generation had 2 upgraded white_2_en_boxartversions instead of one. On the second version, Pokémon White 2, you can see White Kyurem on the cover. This is a fusion of Kyurem and Reshiram. Its right wing, head plume and upper jaw are frozen.

White Kyurem has the highest Special attack stat of all Ice-type Pokémon, and, as mentioned before, the highest base stat total of all of them. It’s also the tallest Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

          • Yeah, but I think they can change the rules of championship on a whim, so I guess its more thinking ahead then anything.

          • True. That they can. But I think the whole reason they made VGC Doubles was because it, on the whole, forces more aggressive play than singles and so in person events can move along faster. Or that’s my assumption anyway.

          • More or less. Doubles is a faster format, and by its nature it offers up a lot more pokemon as being useful where singles is basically a case of having a sweeper set up, putting Rocks up and having a rapid spinner in the back. VGC is still going to fall victim to big 6 no matter what, but in the interim we do see a lot of variation on teams.

Though honestly I”m kinda terrified by eevee, tapu lele, ditto teams right now. Its a really dangerous combo if you can’t shut it down right away.

          • Stale as in (not always, but as per usual) you see the same teams over and over and over. Sure it changes every year as new games come and go, but that doesn’t change the fact that usually everybody has very similar teams. It’s not always like that, and it probably won’t be this year because of a new generation, but it happens often enough.

          • The best OU teams will see a lot of the same Pokémon? And variety is fun and important but isn’t always the spice of life. One of the best parts of the meta game with Pokémon or TCGs is figuring out how to play the mirror match better than anyone else or changing one thing up because you’re confident it’ll give you the leg up when someone plays too standard of a design. There is way more to it than Big 6, I win.

          • no not really. Its a format that changed every year and while it does break down to big six eventually, what is consider big does change, unlike singles which pretty much only changes once every gen and pretty much follows the same trends with different pokemon.

          • The teams are the same so often though, it’s boring to watch IMO.

I don’t play VGC, so you guys know better than I, but this is just my opinion here. 😛

          • Same teams are the same in any format. That’s big six. A teams that will win the most consistently. Remember these people are out to win money and benefits, so of course their going to go with what gives them the best chance at winning.

and I’m glad we can agree on some things Someguy.

          • Trust me. People on Smogon play to win too. haha And people in the VGC play to have fun also. The people at the very top aren’t just there from luck and fun.
But there’s also absolutely nothing wrong with just playing purely for fun.

          • And I enjoy playing for fun as well, but the thing is that once your on a competitive level, you gotta play to win, which is fun. To can’t use your favorites, but what win’s and hope you learn to love them. heck Wolfe, the current world champion, suffered for years by his own admission for using his favorites and eventually took the championship when he learned to buckle down and play smart, and even then he still worked in a Raichu, one of his favorites, who was agreed to be the MVP of his team.

          • That’s sort of my point here.

If playing smart means that I can’t use what I want and have to use a preset list of viable pokemon, then VGC just isn’t for me.

          • But the same is true of singles? You can’t just play OU with Pokemon that are better suited to RU and expect to win. You can have fun! But you can’t expect to be the best. But those two ideas also don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

          • I don’t really play OU at all, I don’t really play any format. I just play with what I like, and try to come up with unique strategies with those pokemon. I realize that means I won’t be very good, but I’ll have a lot more fun that way, which is my main goal anyway.

          • Nope lol
I’m not a very competitive pokemon player, despite being avid breeder and trainer for perfect pokemon. I mostly just play with random people online and such.

          • Fair enough. I can’t make someone like a format. Though if it’s any consolation, if I remember right Iths, you would still be in senior’s, which is a little more varied then Masters play, which is the one most people pay attention to. Generally the older you get, the more you go for what wins over what’s creative.

          • Haha wow that’s pretty cool. Didn’t know that he was stuck with favorites syndrome for a long time. Really is the hardest thing to break out of when it comes to team/deck building strategy games.

          • Time to bring out “the quote”.

Weak pokemon. Strong pokemon. Truly skilled trainers try to win with their favorites.

          • I feel like the current system is perfect. Smogon for singles. They tier everything so you’re not forced to play only broke ass ‘mons. And then VGC for doubles where we get to run rampant with *almost* anything goes strategies.

  1. The one thing bugging me the most about this game is all the personal space some trainers take up. There’s plenty of room for me to pass, yet they still block the road. At least with Snorlax you know it’s just very fat.

    • Lol I noticed this in the demo and was really annoyed, you’re basically blocked by impossible walls. Seems GF didn’t work on the hitboxes in a new gridless environment hard enough…

    • Depends on the UB / whether it’s a physical or special move. They have some fairly extreme stat spreads. Nihilego can’t handle physical attacks. Kartana can’t take special. Guzzlord has crazy HP but no good defense stats.

  2. Do pokemon have moves now that they learn on evolution regardless of level? If not I’m getting extremely lucky with my evolution timing.

  3. I feel like Nanu should have been an E4 member instead of Kahili. But maybe I’m biased because Dark is my favourite typing

    Reply
    • It would go against his character to do so.
And if anybody, he’d replace Acerola because she said that she took his spot. Kahili is in because Hapu wasn’t appointed kahuna fast enough.

    • I need to see Fairy and/or Ghost ultra Beasts, they’d look so cool with the usual type aesthetics

I also want a prevo for the UB-02s, they have so much in common

        • I don’t think they really need one, they just come from another dimension and adapted differently.

But what is interesting is that as they’re Pokémon, they must have a common ancestor to our ones…

          • Still, there are some things I like to know. Like how Nihilego can fuse with humans while the others can’t, and why it looks like Lillie?

          • Nihilego is a shapeshifter, whereas the others aren’t.

I’ve heard theories Lusamine dressed Lillie like Nihilego due to her obsession but I feel it’s just meant to be a metaphor for how Lusamine replaced her daughter with it

    • That will make one less reason to by the Nintendo Switch. Think about it. Are you okay with having a console with no backwards compatibility?

    • This ability is good but it didn’t work for Salazzle it’s need bulkier pkmn,It should be made able poison attack hit steel type pkmn.

      Reply
    • corrosion, with water compaction, are abilities that GF really didnt think take advantage off. Corrosion should make poison moves effective agaisnt steel and water compaction should work as the defensive variation of storm drain. atleast corrosion stops tentacruel from walling Salazzle

  4. There’s this RIDICULOUS Festival question in the challenge thing, asking what’s strong against a dark/poison. I think it’s steel but it’s not??!
