Riddler Hints at Salandit’s Evolution & MORE

salanditWe are getting close to Pokémon Sun & Moon’s release and will be using our spoiler image more often to warn people about information they may not want to see.

Today’s post is about the Chinese Riddler who has recently teased information about the evolution of Salandit, one of the Pokémon revealed this summer. They have said that it will relate to one of four characters: a kyūbi (9-tailed fox), Cleopatra, the gorgons or a siren. The below image was included in his post:

img_1366In the description of Salandit, many fans noticed that it mentioned females being able to produce pheromones capable of attracting males of any species, Pokémon and human alike.

See any resemblance to one of those in its appearance or lore? Post your sleuthing and theories down in the comments!

In addition they stated that we do not know everything about the Alolan starters, even after seeing their second evolutions and the leaked third stages. Mysterious!

  1. I am 100% that Salandit’s evolution will be based on a Succubus

    1. Sirens lured men into the watery depths with their voice and their beauty
    2. Kyubis are said to sometimes take the shape of attractive human women
    3. Gorgans are only female
    4. Cleopatra represented herself as the reincarnation of Isis, the goddess of marriage
    5. Female Salandits emit pheromones that attract males of all species

There is too much evidence here. It has to be a succubus or something similar and when they reveal it, you know who called it first

    • I don’t see it actually implying sexual relations.
It could attract pokemon and then devour them, not have sex with them. That’s perfectly fine I think.

        • The internet will have a field day with this one if your ideas pan out. I mean, I’ve already seen some shit, but damn it’ll get crazy if GF just hands them a concept like that on a silver platter.

On a lighter note, this’ll go well for the comics I’ll eventually make since, by stage 3, I see my popplio as something of a ‘trouser chasing’ deviant and my salandit as her filthy enabling best friend. This is like comedy gold for me.

        • I think these riddles are more fun than actual leaks. Speculation is fun.

Plus he’s pretty much proven so we’re not necessarily wasting our time speculating over a false leak.

“The fox spirit is an especially prolific shapeshifter, known variously as the húli jīng (fox spirit) in China, the kitsune (fox) in Japan, and the kumiho (nine-tailed fox) in Korea. Although the specifics of the tales vary, these fox spirits can usually shapeshift, often taking the form of beautiful young women who attempt to seduce men, whether for mere mischief or to consume their bodies or spirits”

    • I can see it being a Gorgon. Gorgons in greek myths had something about them that compelled people to look at them even when they knew better. In pokemon, you could easily explain that with pheromones and its poison typing is perfect for Gorgons.

      • o.k that is two completely different senses

I don’t trust this riddler for a second

i’d soon shove that Question mark cane so far up his arse that he’s coughing up quizzes

          • What has he actually done, just vaguely guess and leeched off collective rumors into a well spun lie

          • I mean, of the people who are actually commenting on this, I’d guess about 50% actually believe in the rumor. It’s just fun to speculate.

          • not when i’m around
my job is to filter the nonesense and promote actual logic and reasoning

Nothing is worse then blind faith

          • I’m all for critical thinking, but what’s wrong with blind faith as long as it promotes a sort of optimism? I’m a logical thinker, agnostic and a pessimist by nature but I believe there’s a place for faith as long as it’s not twisted… As it tends to be. NOTE: I’m not talking about religion, just faith in anything in general.

          • meh i think extremely cold hearted and logically
i never say this’ll just become something just because

And i firmly believe that Salandit may enhance its pheromones as it evolves
What i don’t believe is that it’ll end up a Gorgon or any of these mythos

          • Oh and I concur, that’s a great belief. I’m agnostic for that very reason, it is impossible for me to believe in anything just because people say I should believe in it. However, I believe in possibilities. Basically, even though I find it hard to believe some guy coming out of the woodworks calling himself a “riddler”, it’s still fun to discuss the “whys” and the “maybes”. My comment was made with the intention to help fill in a gap in StarStorm’s original list to explain why Salandit could possibly evolve into one of the four in order to continue the discussion. I love discussions <333

          • you annoy me
            Riddler takes something already stated
Mixes it up with similar properties
and pulls an accusation out of his butt

          • I can tell =P I’m having a blast though lol. Anyway, I feel as though you were already a bit irritated with this whole Riddler thing long before I came along.

        • You misunderstand. I mean, in the myths, people would go in with their eyes covered, but something about the creature would compel them to open their eyes and look at them. You can explain what compels them with pheromones in the pokemon world

    • “They have said that it will relate to one of four characters”

  2. I don’t think it’s going to be a kyuubi but people need to stop making the argument that Ninetales is already a kyuubi, it’s a pretty weak argument.

The Dugtrio and Excadrill line are both moles.
Squirtle, Tirtouga, Turtonator, Torkoal, Turtwig lines are all turtles.
Ho-Oh, Moltres and Talonflame are based on phoenixes.

There’s numerous ghosts, dragons, horses, bats, seals, foxes, cacti, dogs, crabs, cats, etc. But there can’t be another kyuubi? Should I go on? (Feel free to add ones I missed or didn’t feel like saying in the replies lol)

Cleopatra Selene (Selene is the greek goddess of the moon) and Alexander Helios (Helios is the greek god of the sun).

    • Assuming it is cleopatra, what would you imagine it might look like? I mean, obviously they won’t just slap a headdress on it and call it a day, but I can’t think of where else to take the design.

      Reply
      • Eh, I don’t want to go assuming any one of them is correct, but based on what I know of cleopatra’s life, probably fanged, maybe with some kind of headdress, and the fire marking on its back would be more prominent, and maybe ankh shaped.

    • I feel kind of ashamed that I don’t instantly hate it and instead think it would be somewhat acceptable.

We already have 2 ice alolan lines, so it would be kind of OTT.

        • Spoiler: Marshadow is Ice/Dark. There are no other Ice or Dark types. None. All previous Ice and Dark Pokemon have been scrapped.

          Reply
          • Presumably Litten 3 is dark and the supposed snowman is obviously ice, but I’m honestly going to be annoyed if ice gets the shaft AGAIN, it’s a great type with lots of potential, but it continues to get the short end of the stick. We got Aurorus in gen 6, but other than that the last cool ice type we got was in gen 4 IMO.

        • People are counting alola separately though.

Otherwise you’ll get no new ice types, just a bunch of retconned genwun pokemon 😀

          Reply
          • I’m confused. Are you saying that I should count Alola forms or not? I want a Torterra-esque ice/ground mountain Pokemon.

          • I’m 80% convinced they’re only giving Kanto pokemon Alolan form.

I mean don’t count them. If you count them, we’ve already received 4 ‘new’ ice types, which Nintendo can argue is ‘enough’. Deny them so Nintendo has to give at least 1-2 genuinely new ice types.

          • Fair enough, could work. Maybe not a turtle though, we’ve got tons of those.

That said I did kind of imagine a water/grass turtle with palm trees on its back earlier because of majora’s mask.

          • Oh no, I really don’t want Alolan Meowth and Rattata to be the only new Dark types, one of my favourite types orz

          • I would have until the evolution method was revealed. But really if you make one part dark you have to balance the other somehow, like make it part fairy or psychic or something.

          • Yeah if one becomes dual typed both would have to. Maybe Midday could have been part Fighting. I actually thought maybe Midnight would lose Rock entirely and be Pure Dark.

          • FIghting would have made sense if they were both on their hind legs. In fact that would have made a much better pokemon to be wresting inspired (or even superhero inspired) since then you could have the rock/fighting good guy and the rock/dark bad guy.

          • Well not all Fighting have to be Bipedal, like Terrakion. That would have made sense for a wrestling theme, though I’m glad they aren’t, I don’t want to detract from their Lupine designs too much.

          • Name a fighting type that isn’t bipedal that also isn’t one of the musketeers (or a fighting plate Arceus).

          • It could’ve been the first non-legendary Fighting type Quadruped. Think of how cool and different that would make it 🙂

          • The lengendaries had horns to fight with though, Lycanroc would have only had its jaw.

Eh, I dunno, crazy stuff. Maybe they really do need a light type or something 😛

      • Hmmmm
Diglett and Dugtrio retreated to cooler mountains when the increase of underground heat from active volcanoes
their skin is toughened by the bitter cold allowing them to trudge through thick snow and ice, by triggering earthquakes they can cause avalanches to scare foes away

        Reply
        • I had thought they might develop thicker skin due to the heat and become part steel to claw through the lava, and literally dig and build their homes within the ground surrounding the volcano, Fire/Steel.

          Reply
          • how would heat make their skin thicker?
it would soften and heat it up, not bake it crispy

and how would it get steel out of nowhere……

My explanation is much more well constructed, try again

          • I mean to cope with the heat, not the heat does it to them like they get burnt. Steel would be developed to claw through molten rock. They adapt to live there over time, not to defend against a sudden change. I liked yours by the way. I was merely suggesting an alternative Alolan form I had thought of, apparently not to your liking.

  4. It’s suddenly occurred to me I would struggle to imagine a female Dartrix.
    Rowlett yes, Dartrix no…

So much for anyone calling their Rowlett ‘Athena’.

    Reply
    • Just think of it as that awkward teenage phase. It’ll be over just as soon as you finally get used to it and then you’ll never have to worry about it ever again.

      Reply
      • I like Dartrix as a pokemon, I just sort of struggle to imagine a female one.

People say many species seem the same, but I’m sure if people saw enough owls they’d begin to notice things that give away whether it’s male or female. Also a lot of owls are sexually dimorphic, females tend to be larger.

        Reply
        • They also often have different feather colouration. I don’t remember what owl this is most prominent in, I saw it on Springwatch I think.

          Reply
          • Most birds do to some degree. Most notably the peacock. I wish pokemon would do more sexual dimorphism, it makes pokemon more interesting. Even small things like length of horns/fangs are more interesting than no difference at all. Personally I’d choose to make the face shapes different, make male pokemon have more angular faces and female pokemon have smoother faces.

Maybe mix it up from time to time depending on the species. Like having a peacock pokemon where instead of being plain brown, the female was red and orange to contrast with the green and ble of the male. Or even a pokemon where the different genders had different types. Heck, Volbeat and Illumise are supposed to be the female and male of the same pokemon (in a way), so it’s not totally crazy.

          • Meowstic’s always been the one that bugged me because they also changed the moveset per gender and I wanted the blue colouring with the attack moveset because I don’t like the white colouring or the attack moveset.

But yeah, it would be good. Pyroar does an ok job. Pikachu is one of the more overt ones that does well.

Venusaur, Butterfree, Gloom/Vileplume and Doduou/Dodrio are particluarly good because they’re not immediately obvious but when you see the differences it’s easier to characterise them.

Wobbuffet is the one I like to bring up to annoy people who make comments about the need to genderise pokemon being counterproductive or other wild accusations. If Gamefreak are willing to just slap lipstick on all female Wobbuffet, they can damn well do some saner stuff with other pokemon.

          • I agree with most of this. Though Prankster Male Meowstic is way better than female Meowstic. Personally I love both, I would like if they were both a bit more competitively viable. Wooper has one of my favourite gender differences, as does Starly.
Wobbuffet is hilarious, I love it even though the Lipstick thing is kinda terrible XD

          • I’m no good with support pokemon, I tend to just load everything with attack moves 😛

Yeah, Wooper is pretty good. Starly is a bit less noticeable but still quite reasonable. Combee is always a good one too.

I have no particular issue other than it’s lazy. Besides, I think male/female pokemon and their differences shouldn’t be mixed with real world issues of what’s considered stereotyping and what isn’t.

        • Oh, didn’t know that about owls actually. I get you though. I’ve had to really stretch to see certain ones being female because their design leaves nothing to the imagination. I remember, way back when, I raised a female venusaur with attract in FRLG when serebii’s POTD stated, “No one would expect attract from a venusaur” or something along those lines.

There are always ones that can go either way, but sometimes I like to pick out the ones you wouldn’t expect and set them as the girls on my team. Like a haxorus, swampert, and even an ursaring who, even despite being female, I imagined looked (and sounded) like a man in drag.

    • Speaking of gendered Pokemon, I just realized something: when Brionne got announced the Internet was in an uproar, yet when Oricorio was announced (who seems feminine to me) nobody bats an eye.

      Reply
      • I think its because Brionne is a starter evo. People feel their choice at the beginning is limited because one of the starters turns out to be extremely stereotypically feminine

        Reply
      • Probably because everyone was imagining Popplio as a male and expecting a circus theme instead of a pop idol theme.

I can imagine all but Pa’u as both male and female, but I was intending to get a female one anyway, since I don’t usually have many females on my team. That’s not because I have anything against females, I just tend to imagine most of the pokemon I like to use in male form and in a way it reflects the friends I’ve made in real life over the years.

The moment I saw Baile Oricorio though, I knew immediately “automagically added to team roster – female fire/flying”. Come to think of it though, the first one shown in the trailer was female and I don’t remember seeing any males.

As an aside, female-only pokemon tend not to take my fancy very often because most are cutesy or look too peppy. There are exceptions, but most of the ones that aren’t cutesy or peppy have design issues I dislike (like Froslass’ arms being attached to its head part instead of the fake kimono tail thing).

        Reply
  5. So with all the Gender questions brought up by Brionne I have a question of my own. Do you care what gender your Pokémon are? Do you like to have more of one gender on your team than the other(s)? Please try to keep your answers calm and civilised, I realise it has become something of a sensitive subject here recently.

    Reply
        • Nope. I always decide nicknames first and then adjust gender accordingly. I have no preference over either gender, although I do like having 3 males/3 females, but that’s not really important.

          Reply
          • I actually do think about having a 50/50 split when building my teams, but then usually go with whatever I get.

    • I honestly don’t care what gender my pokemon are unless I am trying to breed down a ball, unless its Gardevoir those have to be male for me, it being female just seems boring and expected. Honestly most of the time I don’t even look at the gender (I couldnt tell you what the gender of my team is)

      Reply
      • The ball passing is why I have more females than males in my bank. I’d like to see Genderless and Male only get to pass the ball with Ditto, but not let Ditto itself pass it.

        Reply
          • I would like to be able to have stuff like Safari Ball Tauros that I can actually have bred to be competitively useful.

          • they need to make a tauros/miltank pre evo for this reason, and give us new/more poke balls in sun and moon for aesthetic reasons

          • Or just make them like Nidoran and Volbeat/Illumise and have both a possibility to hatch from Miltank/Tauros eggs. I want a new Ball that suits Fire types more.

          • Egg Moves and Natures are the main thing they pass, both of which the female can have anyway, so I kinda agree haha.

    • As controversial as this is, for feminine Pokemon liek Gardevior or Roselia I have them be female, and for masculine Pokemon like Emboar I have them be male. Other than that no.

      Reply
      • Oddly I usually get a male Roselia for when I evolve it into Roserade. Roserade always struck me as a sort of Zoro/Don Quixote type.

        Reply
      • I can see that for those ‘mon, but I have used both genders of each so I feel that much less now. Maybe it’s assigning a personality in my mind that changes how I feel about them.

        Reply
          • They are, but it breaks my heart seeing a female serperior being flamethrowered into oblivion. Also some designs look masculine like mega garchomp for example, it looks wrong female lol. (Imagine male Jynx) lol

          • I sort of understand I guess, but I would feel that towards any of my ‘mon, regardless of gender. Some do look more Masculine/Feminine than others, I don’t feel this is often that major though. Male Jynx would make a kind of sense, as a Drag Queen.

          • The thought can get pretty horrifying. Lets go with immense psychic energy that turned into physical clothing and then back away slowly with our hands over our eyes.

          • I had the whole “do any pokemon wear clothes” argument once and pretty much everyone argued against me saying anything that looks like clothing is actually skin and no pokemon wears clothing, and the belt Sawk and Throh weave from vines don’t count as clothing and there’s no way their clothing could be made of vines and not actually skin.

Personally I think pokemon do wear clothes, Jynx included.

Related: I don’t like Alolan Raichu’s design, I wish its tail had been normal and it actually built its own surfboards by stripping bark off trees or using driftwood.

          • Wait a minute, if men and women are physically equally, how come they’re still divided into groups in most sports? Shouldn’t that also have gone out with the 50s?

          • I feel sports aren’t really comparable to battling creatures that show no difference in physical ability and also can control elements.

          • I thought that was a general comment rather than about Pokemon, so I responded as such.

In regards to Pokemon, I’d forgive people not realising there isn’t a difference between the two if they’ve never looked into the game mechanics. I’m sure at one point when I was younger I was probably convinced there was a difference just by the way my battles turned out. It took me until either late G4 or early G5 to find out what causes the Wurmple split because I didn’t have the internet until around the time G4 was released. Hard to believe there was a time when stuff like that wasn’t known by all within days of the game being released. I kind of miss the mystery.

    • Nah I don’t really have a preference over what a Pokemon’s gender is. If I were have to say one it would be
      Gardevoir, but not a lot

        • Originally I was used to it being both, but after Gallade I just think it should have been a gender based split evo from the start.

          • I think it should’ve been, but I still don’t mind Male Gardevoir. I was more annoyed when Gallade was initially revealed, but over time I just accepted it. The Mega brought it up again though. Still, never mind, they’ll probably never change it now.

          • Beforehand I didn’t have issue, but when Gallade appeared it suddenly made more sense for Gallade to be the male evolution and Gardevoir to be the female.

Plus they really didn’t help when they introduced megas.
“Let’s make Gardevoir’s dress even bigger and even harder to fight in”
People complain about fighting females drawn with skimpy unprotective clothing but they never think about the ridiculously sized speed-reducing ball gowns 😛

    • I tend to make preconstructed teams with members that have exaggerated personalities. I use these on the side for writing and it leaves me with a sort of ‘sitcom’ cast for a team. As such, I usually go half and half, but there have been a few oddballs, like in HGSS where it was a 1:5 male/female ratio and in BW2 where it was 4:2. My preconceived team right now is 3:3 though.

      Reply
      • That sounds pretty cool. Sometimes if I’m using a genderless Pokémon I feel weird about having less of one gender on the team I’m making. I’m not sure why, maybe because I just like things to be equal if I can. Though I generally just take what is best at the time.

        Reply
        • I’ve only ever had 1, but honestly, I basically ended up technically giving it one anyway. My Pt magnezone was ‘male’ and was crushing on my lucario…and not because she was a girl, but because she was part steel type and he had magnet pull.

          Reply
          • Shouldn’t that be the other way around?
The metal is attracted to the magnet rather than the other way around.
            I dunno, I’m not a magneto-physicist.

    • I don’t care unless the nickname I have picked out doesn’t fit, but then I don’t nickname Pokemon often, so it usually doesn’t matter.

      Reply
      • I rarely nickname them in-game, I have names in my head that I remember, just in case I change my mind later and it’s in a different game so I can’t ever re-name it. I also do this on the very rare occasion I actually have a Pokémon that was traded to me on my team.

        Reply
          • I only really Nicknamed Pokémon (in game) from DexNav so I can easily find which has a certain egg move or trait. I don’t tend to have them on my team.

    • I just go by what feels right. Originally that was all male when I got my early games because for many years (certainly the entirety of my primary school years) I only had male friends at school. That probably changed a bit in late G4 early G5 and blah blah blah stuff about my life.

This time around I’m just going to look at the pokemon, imagine it as a real creature and come up with a fitting scenario. Hence I’m planning: Oricorio♀, Komala♂/♀(undecided), Rowlett♂, Salandit♀/♂, and the rest I’m going to wait for more info. Just realised that means 2 fire types and a normal type, but oh well, it’s win with what you like, not what’s got the best typing.

      Reply
      • Well you also have 2 flying types… I do think some ‘mon might suit a certain gender more, but then I’ll change my mind later, especially if I use one of a different gender to my pre-conceived idea.

        Reply
        • Drat, hadn’t noticed that either.
          Oricorio is looking like it’s going to have to Oricori-go ; n ;

I tend not to change my mind once it’s made up. I’ll allow a bit of leeway, but usually once I’ve got a preferred image I stick with that.

          Reply
          • I was thinking of using Minior with Rowlet, but having 2 of the same type on my in-game team irks me somewhat. Feels like a waste of a type coverage slot I suppose.

          • Yeah, but like I say, it’s supposed to be about favourites. And I’ve never really stuck to one team the whole way through, I always swap out as needed depending on the gym. Otherwise I’d be stuck using bog standard pokemon from the first area all the way through.

I got quite lucky in Y since the team I’d built out of preference ended up being advantageous against the E4. I had a grass type, a fight/dark, an ice/rock, a water/dark, and I’m not sure about the other two, but I think one was part steel.

I may end up scrapping Oricorio anyway because it doesn’t evolve. So much for me trying to break old habbits 😛 I’ll see when the game arrives. And I can’t help if we’ve got some very nice flying types this time around.

          • Yeah I’d like to be able to play with just favourites, but there’s always that thing in my mind telling me I’m wrong to have repeat types. I also grow to like Pokémon over time and then some of them can become favourites even if they weren’t immediately so.

          • I have no qualms with dropping pokemon but I usually stick them in a special box to signify they once fought a gym leader.

I used to be less sentimental about them than I am now.

          • I just accept it as being natural since without trading there will always be pokemon that I can’t capture because I’m too early in the game to reach them. I think the anime doesn’t help. Ash used to swap his pokemon out more, but these days he picks a team and sticks with it, which has lead to this ‘one true team’ way of thinking. Hopefully they’ll change that.

    • Naw, I don’t know if I’m alone in this, but sometimes I’ll get through like, 70% of the game before I realize that one of my pokemon is an unorthodox gender. “Wtf!? Why did Attract wor- Ohhhh, my Gardevoir’s a male, I didn’t know that” (That happened waaaay back in Gen III before Gallade).

      • Sometimes if I’m not paying attention, but as I breed Pokémon a lot I tend to be quite aware if I’m actually looking for a Pokémon with a specific trait to catch. I actually pay fairly little attention to the genders of opposing trainers’ Pokémon.

        • I should probably start doing that. Once came into the competitive world, I actually had to rebreed a ton of my pokemon because they weren’t the right genders for breeding purposes lol. As far as casual playing though, couldn’t are less.

  7. So I realized earlier today that I haven’t challenged the Elite Four a 2nd time, so I went ahead and beat them again with some of my original team with 2 other moms I trained for competitive battling. After I beat Steven, I watched the credits roll with the history of the main events in the main story. As I watched the Pokemon I used in those battles I realized: “Damn, I’m really going to miss Omega Ruby,”. I mean, while they weren’t the best games, OR was the game I’ve been playing for the past almost 2 years. And to think I’m starting Sun in the next month is kinda weird and sad because I’m going to miss Omega Ruby.

    • I’ll probably come back to OR more than I did Y.
After the main story was done, Y fell a bit flat.
OR still has secret bases and islands to explore, even after catching 70% of the legendaries.
Plus I think it’s prettier in places.

      • True, X and Y felt a little boring because I’ve played it 4 times already and the story gets a tad bit bland. I did like ORAS better than XY, it just was so nostalgic for me

        • Once was enough for me, and even then I only half paid attention to the story.

I prefer the stuff with ruins and deep lore like in Sinnoh, Hoenn and Johto.
Kalos was all about the war and Yvetal and Xerneas just existed as a means of powering the weapon, practically nothing was said about their existence.

I must admit ORAS had bits I didn’t like. (I absolutely hated what they did to Mauville and New Mauville). But overall it was reasonably faithful to the original and managed to look (mostly) better than Kalos. I took issue at some of the story elements (like the parallel universe stuff and the retcon of Sootopolis’ creation story) but the execution was good.

          Reply
          • It used to be one of my favourites because it was a nice long throughfare for bikes and it had a quaint/cosy charm. Modern mauville feels like an oversized shopping complex – uninviting, bland, repetative.

And New Mauville used to be a proper dungeon, now it’s just a room with items.

          • Yeah, New Mauville sucked. I thought there was maybe like a secret part but nope. But I don’t think the throughfare part is really all that important any more. They have the battle resort trick (which is amazing) for hatching eggs and you can also just ride your bike in Mauville so that’s really nice. It does feel like mall, but I like that feeling, especially because they made it intricately layered.

          • It’s the dessert power plants all over again.

I don’t like the battle resort day care though, I don’t trust those kids, especially to watch pokemon ‘lay eggs’. It seems weird. At least the grandparents would know the truth and let the pokemon be. Unless I’m getting it wrong and pokemon lay eggs the same way Chao from Sonic do.

I really don’t like the ‘mall’ feel. I only know of two or three ‘mall’ type places near me and both feel very alien. I get the same feeling from all shopping malls. I don’t like the residential area being all flats/apartments either. Those also feel really alien. Like cubicles on a spaceship. And the gym doesn’t feel special anymore, it feels like it’s just another shop where you go in, get what you came for, and leave.

          • It just feels lively to me. Idk, it’s probably in my top 3 favorite pokemon cities. The gym doesn’t stand out though. They could’ve done something else with it.

          • Most of the NPCs are inside, stationary or sat down though. At least Lumiose had people wandering around and things going by.

The gym would have made a good rooftop thing, and it could have doubled as the generator room, with the turbines outside it.

(Which reminds me I dislike wind turbines too. I didn’t mind them too much in Sinnoh around the valley windworks, but the less of them the better. In contrast, I’d like to see more windmills.)

          • True, I mean ORAS weren’t the best of remakes but still good games. And I agree with what you said about lore and ruins, like in Sinnoh (my favorite region), it had the creation trio, Regigigas (which called back on the Regi Trio, something I thought was pretty awesome), and the Lake Trio, not to mention Arceus too.

          • I don’t just mean the pokemon themselves though, I mean the way their legends were woven into the story. They were hinted at by statues and carvings and legends told by NPCs. They were foreshadowed a great deal which made finally encountering them a great moment.

Kalos just Deus Ex Machina’d them into the core of a superweapon and gave us no lore other than ‘one is life, one is death’ which felt really lazy and stupid.

    • I liked ORAS. The only real complaints I have are that it’s not challenging enough battle wise (gym leaders were wienies compared to Emerald) and no BF.

      Reply
      • To be fair Emerald had different moves available among other things. If you were comparing exactly the same teams and found that result I’d say fair enough, but I find results tend to be skewed in favour of older stuff due to new move mechanics and modern AI not having caught up with the new move pools.

        • I just felt they could’ve given them more pokemon and raised their levels a bit. Or at the very least had them rematchable. Liza and Tate definitely should’ve had more than 2 pokemon though.

          • Gamefreak will always pander to the lowest common denominator.

I agree about having rematches and L&T needing more than two (even though I think they were that easy in the original).

          • Probably effort, or maybe sales or market research saying otherwise.

I never had challenge mode, but I’d advise turning the exp share off in Alola, I’ve heard people who replayed Kalos with it off suddenly found things much harder.

  8. I wish you could have a 7th pokemon as a designated mascot for your team. I.e. you can’t use it in battle but it accompanies you anyway, maybe gains Exp still or something.

Would be nice for those pokemon you think are quite cool/cute but not very good at battling or you don’t want to evolve them.

    Reply
      • I suppose it could be compared to the pokewalker. It’s kind of hard to express.

Basically imagine a pokemon you really like but know it would do terribly in battle or would waste a slot you desparately need for a different pokemon because of types and things. This way it would still be in your team, but doesn’t actually battle, it just hangs around the trainer like a mascott. Like what Misty’s Togepi did originally, or Brock’s Bonsly before it could attack.

Maybe have it animated next to the trainer in battle or on the overworld, like when pokemon followed the trainer in HGSS if possible.

Maybe I’m being too frivolous, I dunno.

  9. Ok… Let’s see if I can crack it…

Kitsune are known to be massively intelligent and able to transform into humans, possess women. Often they can be seen as mischievous and malicious who prey on the proud and boastful to the poor and helpless, but are also known as benevolent friends or wives who love for and care for those close to them. They’re known to also live a very long time and have magical powers. They were also, at one point, seen as a fox-like goblin that could never be trusted.

Cleopatra was seen as a figure of great beauty, had a charming voice, and had the ability to make everyone agree with her. Apparently this gave her an advantage as a ruler, as people were pleased to be under her rule. She was also very intelligent and fluent in 9 languages.

I’m starting to see some connections.

Onward to Gorgons. They were seen as hideous, sometimes immortal, creatures with the ability to turn people into stone by a simple gaze into the eyes or the eyes of her snakes. They’re often depicted with living snakes for hair and as sisters or as tusked, clawed, winged creatures. They’re also known to have large fangs or forced smiles showing their sharp teeth. In some cases, their decapitated heads look like they’re beared or winged from the blood flowing or snake hair hanging. A gorgon’s scales and intertwined snakes may originate from the mythical dragon Delphyne, who had impenetrable scales, whereas other features could be from the Mesopotamian Humbaba. Apparently, one infamous gorgon named Medusa had copulated with Poseidon after he fell in love with her beauty and golden hair in Athena’s temple. The goddess cursed her to have snakes for hair thereafter.

For Delphyne, she was a dragon with the upper half of a maiden and lower half of a serpent. For the Humbaba, the only relevant thing I found was that it breathes fire.

Finally, Sirens. They were dangerous creatures who sung songs to lure sailors to their deaths. Some have been portrayed as daughters of the river god, Achelous and the Earth. In other cases, they’ve been winged maidens, but still daughters of earth. The winged version takes the men to flower filled locations surrounded by cliffs and rocks. In general, they’ve been represented as women with bird legs and possibly bird wings, birds with the heads of women, or simply a beautiful young maiden. Sirens would play songs so irresistible that it even created a term for something irresistible that is bad. Christianity depicted sirens as winged prostitutes using their instruments and songs to drive travelers to poverty and shipwreck.

    Ok… Let’s compile the similarities..

All of them have something to do with beauty and either intelligence or some special power. Most seem to be able to manipulate men or get their way. Two are known as kind and loving whereas three are known to be rather dangerous and manipulative. Overall, they’re all connected to being beautiful but able to get their way and some sort of power, whether it be political or literal.

Also, for note, Salandit’s Japanese name, Yatoumori, comes from a corruption of Yato (burglar) and the word for newt, Imori. The burglar part also goes along well with the idea of stealing another’s will or causing misfortune. The newt part could also refer to the mythical dragon of fire, the Salamander, who is named after the amphibian of the same name, which is also a close relative to the newt.

With all this said…. Here’s my idea on what the evolution may be.

I believe it may be a female only evolution with the ability to use possessive moves such as disable, glare, and maybe even a new one. I envision it having the black “flaps” on the neck to turn into wings on the shoulders that rise up like frills when attacking, the black “mask” to resemble a hair-like pattern, and for the tail to curl around it and resemble a dress or skirt, also keeping it bipedal.
However, I believe there may be two female evolutions. One for Sun and one for Moon, with the other version having her be more gentle, using moves like Helping-Hand, Will-o-Wisp, and maybe even a new move to prevent certain statuses. I imagine the flaps turning into wings like Druddigon’s, the mask could cover just the snout, and the pokemon becomes bipedal.

I feel like, at the same time, they may end up being Dragon/Fire or Dragon/Poison versions of the same one pokemon with both of these concepts combined. I’m not saying there won’t be a male evolution, though. I just feel like this will end up more like Burmy’s line but better.

    That’s my conclusion.

    Reply
      • In that case, I feel it’s best to say Gorgons, especially given that they have backstories with winged heads, reptilian features, and even potential origins from a Greek dragon and a Mesopotamian fire breathing monster. Plus, snakes are also poisonous and Salandit is a monitor lizard, like the komodo dragon.

        Reply
    • I liked reading this, I think it will relate to one of the 4 things, however those common traits seem like they will influence at least one evolution. I feel maybe Turtonator will stop another Dragon/Fire from happening this gen though.

      Reply
    • I wouldn’t go so far as to assume a type change. This would be the first poison/fire type we’ve ever got and to lose that immediately would be weird. I am not against that though since, y’know, EARTHQUAKE.

Still, despite what Pharap said (about the red herring), there are similarities that inadvertently link them. Mainly being a female who can control/manipulate men to get what she wants. Stage 1 may simply be tricking others to let their guards down so you can rob them, stage 2 may be along the lines of becoming so proficient at it in a way, that men throw themselves at you in dumbfounded stupor, making it insanely easy to get anything.

Yeah, that goes with the whoile succubus thing mentioned before, but there’s always a PG way of pulling that off. Besides, if we got that bimbo, Lopunny, then anything can fly.

      Reply
      • The linkage is probably part of the ploy.
It’s probably going to be related to one of the traits that doesn’t link them. Like an exclusion game: you exclude all the things they have in common and focus on the differences.

I’m glad someone listened though, I am actually quoting the article, I’m not pulling stuff from thin air.

I think the female aspect is either a ploy or it’s a split evolution, or maybe they’re only describing the female or something. Again, why I think avoiding the obvious links and looking at the things that divide would be more valueble.

        Poor lopunny.
        Golurks can fly 😀

        Reply
        • Heh. The most obvious standings about salandit to me are the bandit motif and the emphasis on the females’ abilities. Any evolution would have to incorporate these two things in some way at the very least (so a combee evo looks promising). Really, I’m not expecting a massive change in concept; Pokemon don’t generally do that with maybe the exception of evos added in later gens. So if we’re gonna speculate on anything, we should try to keep those factors in.

          Reply
          • This is something I dislike about this ‘riddle’ people are forgetting the bandit theme somewhat, it’s one of it’s main features, it’s in it’s name.

          • It’s kinda hard to just tack one of those ideas on though. Like, a thief…who is also Cleopatra inspired? That doesn’t really add up, especially considering that there’s no overlying Egyptian theme to start with. The kyuubi might work, but a lizard gaining more tails wouldn’t really be considered as such, generally just some kind of dragon or something. The siren is basically covered by the popplio evo, having 2 in the same gen would be lazy, especially since they’ve been giving this gen’s pokemon a lot of thought and individuality. That just leaves the gorgon, who I can’t really find any argument against tbh. However, going from a newt to a medusa like creature while still being a bandit is just too much to juggle.

Conversely, look at ampharos. If it were a 3 stage evo, then perhaps a change like that could be justified.

          • It’s going to be more abstract than that.
The American Football player was just a hint to Passimian’s throwing capability (and arguably its hat thing) for example.
Those are just two small aspects, unrelated to the lore at hand.

It might be as simple as Salandit becomes ‘king of thieves’ and has a crown, or gets so enamoured with jewels it decorates itself with earings and things.

          • Hence why I say not to focus on what the 4 have in common, but what they have that’s different, since 3 are just flat out false (supposedly).

          • So far we’ve only heard lore about what the female does differently, we have no stats or abilities to go on, so it’s a bit of a mystery. There was no hint in Rockruff’s description that it would split or do anything unusual.

I hope they don’t pull an ‘only the female evolves’ because that would skew the balance. I could accept a branching evo with one form for male and one for female, but not another Combee situation.

  10. Ok so I’m right on the coast of Panama City for vacation right now and I was playing Pokémon Go. There are a ton of Pokémon here I don’t have where I live so I was like “Woah a Kingler!” “Woah a Charmander!” “WOAH A PIKACHU”

          • Depends where you live an how much money you have. By comparison to some countries we are doing kind of OK.

          • My family isn’t well off per se, but we avoid buying stuff unnecissarily as much as possible. For example, I’ve had the same phone for about 10 years and I haven’t bought any new games for 3 months. We also haven’t had a holiday in many years and we rarely go out to eat, so we manage to sustain ourselves. Plus there was some inheritance last year, which we’ve hardly touched.

That probably sounds really boring or strange, but it keeps our world turning.

          • We’re pretty much the same tbh, just with almost no money to spare most of the time. Almost never have take out and haven’t been on holiday in nearly 10 years (Only ever in the UK).

          • “Take out” sounds horribly American 😛

We have money to spare, but that comes from avoiding buying things until necessary and being careful with what we’ve got.

I’ve heard tales of friends who’ve lost 2-3 phones in 1 year. 10 years and I’ve only ever misplaced mine about 5 times at the most, and it was almost always inside the house.
And I’ve heard tales of people who go down the pub every week or go to a restaurant every week. If we did that we definately wouldn’t have money for emergencies.

I think the last time I had a holiday was about the same time. I have been outside the UK a few times, but mostly when I was younger so the tickets would have been cheaper anyway. And there’s only one of me, no siblings, so that helps a lot.

      • Get them both assasinated so you can have some slightly less awful candidates.

Having a brief look, the Libertarians (assuming they actually support what they claim, which is probably not the case but oh well) don’t look too bad as an alternative.

It used to be fun to see what he would get right after the fact and things like Rock Paper Scissors and the guts coming to fruition in pyukumuku. That example is really showing the shine he once had- we never could have speculated a sea cucumber with an organ fist. It was fun days later to see how he teased it. But now? Letting us know what exactly things are being teased- that’s just cheap and distracting. Its a bit interesting to guess which of the four but after a while it all becomes tedious.

And I’m still not over that grid/ list being updated after reveals instead of before. It’s cheap and ruins his credibility.
