Riddler Hints at Salandit’s Evolution & MORE

salanditWe are getting close to Pokémon Sun & Moon’s release and will be using our spoiler image more often to warn people about information they may not want to see.

Today’s post is about the Chinese Riddler who has recently teased information about the evolution of Salandit, one of the Pokémon revealed this summer. They have said that it will relate to one of four characters: a kyūbi (9-tailed fox), Cleopatra, the gorgons or a siren. The below image was included in his post:

img_1366In the description of Salandit, many fans noticed that it mentioned females being able to produce pheromones capable of attracting males of any species, Pokémon and human alike.

See any resemblance to one of those in its appearance or lore? Post your sleuthing and theories down in the comments!

In addition they stated that we do not know everything about the Alolan starters, even after seeing their second evolutions and the leaked third stages. Mysterious!

  1. Does this mean corocoro will reveal the evo of salandit maybe? I think they will pull out the stops for her evo (i;m guessing female only evo)

  2. I still think you guys read WAY too hard into pokedex flavor text
All its saying is that Salandit produce toxic gasses with its tail but Females also contain pheromones which any female/male species can produce, it’s just working into the theme that this tiny lizard isn’t very strong and uses its cunning to turn the tide of battle
But like always you’re all jumping to conclusions and believing anything anyone says just because he’s been floating around saying junk, gullible lot

  3. Just descovered something…

Doesn’t it occur to any of you that Litten’s final evolution has it’s mane-like appendages similar to the leader of Team Flare’s hairdo in X and Y?

Yeah kinda like Cynthia has those aura ornaments similar to Lucario’s but colored as Umbreon’s ears.

    Makes you think doesn’t it?

      • Sadly it’s way too badly put together to be genuine. Which is a shame because I like the design.

The obvious flaw isn’t the colouring or the way it’s drawn, it’s in the jpeg artifacts.
It’s obvious (well to me at least, I’m a programmer so I have to know about images and compression and stuff) that the confidential, numbers and data have been taken from the leeks already provided and put next to some art in an editor, then saved as a jpeg.

Jpegs naturally cause image degredation because of their compression algorithm (they were designed for photos, not drawn images) and in this case the quality degredation of the character doesn’t match that of the parts taken from the leeked images. If this was legit, the image degredation would be uniform across the image.

  4. Shingo Fujii is confirmed to be one of the animators to work on the Sun and Moon anime. For me personally, this settles it. Will definitely be watching it now. Ridiculously talented animator. For those who dont know him, watch Precure and Sakugabooru.

    • you can have good animation, but is the writing good? the writing can make or break a movie no matter how good its animation is. look at wonderful animators like Pixar or Studio Ghibli, all wonderfully animated movies, but some of them are just plain awful. The pokemon anime has a history of being awful not because of its animation, but because the plot is pretty much non-existent, and there’s so much filler.

  5. So I found something on Reddit about the demo situation, and people are saying that it’d be extremely hard to datamine; is this true or just speculation?

    Reply
        • Vastly oversimplifying it, but basically you need a key in order to play the demo that will be placed in the code once its released. At this point hackers have to run a program to constantly insert different random keys until it unlocks, which will take some time. By their own addition it might take longer for them to find the key then simply waiting for the demo to release.

At that point though, we don’t know how easy it’ll be to data mine it. We’ll just have to wait and see.

          • “some time” – potentially until Gen 12 is released.

18446744073709551616 * 18446744073709551616 possible keys (the calculator goes into scientific notation trying to calculate that, which basically means it’s really big. Imagine the number 3 with about 38 zeroes after it)

That’s assuming they’re just brute forcing it though, and not using more sophisticated techniques, like precomputed lookup tables (though that would take a very large database, so it would still be slow, but much quicker than brute forcing). That said, if there was a squad of them and they divided up the key ranges, they could increase their odds significantly.

          • It never ever will be as far as consoles are concerned.

As soon as the hardware is known, people will start working on interfaces and HW sniffing devices.
If any of the software is open source, people will start scanning for security holes (there’s a saying “where there’s a webkit, there’s a way”).
            Sometimes individual games provide holes.

All security (even those protecting people’s bank balances) aren’t designed to stop hackers, only to slow them down.
The only reason modern encryption works is because it slows hackers down to the point where it’s faster to wait for technology to improve than it is to brute force it. There are other techniques (e.g. rainbow tables) but even those have their limitations.

    • More info: it has a 128-bit lock on it; which doesn’t mean much to me other than they’d have to get a divine amount of luck to crack that.

      Reply
      • Assuming by that they mean it’s using a 128-bit key for encryption then that means there are 18446744073709551616 * 18446744073709551616 possible keys.

So attempting to manually crack it would be virtually impossible assuming they didn’t just get lucky.

        Reply
        • Yeah, my thoughts exactly other than I didn’t really know the numbers. My question is this: is this key only for playing the demo early or will they have the same issue with dataming?

          Reply
          • I’m presuming at the moment it’s just until the game is released, keeping the whole demo encrypted would slow the game down somewhat (encryption algorithms are designed to be relatively slow on purpose) and the data (including game code) would have to be decrypted before being loaded into ram, after which it would be nakedly observable in RAM, so it would still be possible to modify the RAM contents in an attempt to trick the game into reading data that should be hidden (i.e. non-visible pokedex entries) or unlocking more (i.e. making the game think the player has completed the pokedex).

So ultimately the only true way to stop them hacking is to load the pokedex with false data (e.g. 80-odd copies of missingno’s entry) or wipe it as much as possible. That way if they hack in, they just get useless stuff and not genuine data.

(It’s becoming one of my catchphrases by this point: programmers gotta know this stuff :P)

          • It’s still too soon to say.
I’m hoping there will be some people who start attempting it just to see if it’s possible, but the challenge is knowing where they’ll report their findings if they do decide to report them.

Basically if it is hackable, hope the white hats get to it first.

          • White hat hacking – hacking for ethical reasons, i.e. to test how vulnerable something is with the intention of warning people if it’s not secure, e.g. finding out there’s a way to hack the demo and telling people there’s a flaw but not what it is or any of the data (or maybe just a small snippit to prove they’re telling the truth)
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_hat_(computer_security)

Black hat hacking – hacking for unethical reasons, e.g. hacking the data and then anonymously posting it everywhere
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hat

    • I’m inclined to believe them, but I think it’s still mostly speculation.

I don’t have much faith in the guys in charge, but I have faith that the programmers will have protested after last time (in fact I’m pretty sure they would have complained before the original demo and got ignored) that the demo needs better protection against reverse engineering.

        • When it comes to game dev, there’s the programmers and the the managers. The programmers usually know their stuff but they have to convince the managers something is a good idea, and more importantly, that it’s cost effective. Managers tend to know sod all about programming, so they tend to err on the side of what achives visible results. Protecting against hackers isn’t really a visible result, so they usually ignore it until it’s too late.

Hence why many companies end up getting hacked – managers don’t think encryption is worth the time and effort it takes to put in place.

          Reply
          • I’m probably slightly bias, but I’ve heard many horror stories on Stack Overflow and other programming websites.

The “Pointy Haired Boss” trope and Dilbert comics do exist for a reason though. I would assume Japanese managers are a bit more understanding and level headed, but that might be wishful thinking.

  6. The exact number of possible keys for an 128-bit key encryption algorithm is 340282366920938463463374607431768211456.

Assuming a hacker could try 1 key every millisecond, it would take them 340282366920938463463374607431768211.456 seconds, which is about 10790283070000000000000000000 years, to brute force the demo open 9 days early.

(Again, assuming they don’t try something more sophisticated like a dictionary attack.)

    Reply
      • That’s just brute forcing though, there are other techniques that could speed it up, but even those have their limitations.

Also if they’ve implemented the algorithm incorrectly it could be game over. But hopefully they’ve done it properly.

      • Just remember, this is the sort of stuff that’s supposed to be underpinning our banks and businesses, if people don’t apply the pressure to make sure businesses are using this stuff, we’ll have a lot more incidents like when yahoo and showdown got hacked.

        Reply
    • Pretty sute any hacker worth a damn doesn’t just brute force. But still interesting to know.

But this is just the key to activate the demo right, nothing to do with being able to data mine once the demo is downloaded? Or am I mistaken?

Either way, I would like some data mined info before the game releases but wouldn’t be the end of the world of it doesn’t happen. I’m adaptable.

      Reply
      • No, but it’s the base case. Anything more sophisticated would require explaining the technique and why it works, which really would send people to sleep.

As far as I know it’s just protecting the demo until the 18th. I’m just hearing stuff about what they’re doing via word of mouth. (You might want to read some of my other comments, I’ve gone into a few of the possible things they might be doing and some things they can’t.)

It depends on what they’ve done, we still don’t know anything about what the game will look like after it’s been ‘unlocked’, again, I’ve mentioned a few possibilities below in reply to Ithsme.

          • 4-5 years ago I didn’t know the difference between a megabyte or a gigabyte and couldn’t identify any computer components. Now I have experience with about 10-15 languages and I’m pretty good with 3-5 of them 😛

It is indeed never too late to learn.

Personally I recommend C# as a first language, but different people prefer different types of languages. If you’re more mathematically inclined you might get on better with Haskell for instance, or if you’re confident with knowing how hardware works, jump straight to C++. A lot of the younger programmers prefer scripting languages like Python because they prefer stuff being easy to throw together rather than thinking about robustness or longevity.

          • Modern C++11 with smart pointers and the standard library instead of raw pointers and dynamically allocated memory I hope.

Weird though, usually people prefer C# because it’s nice and safe and you don’t have to do your own memory management (at all).

      • I don’t really want to have to try to explain the more sophisticated methods to people, it will only raise more questions like “how does the dictionary work” or “what’s a hash” or how they get the dictionary in the first place or why it’s considered more sophisticated and why it’s more likely to work etc.

          • Which languages do you prefer using/have experience with?

I’ve never attempted to implement an encryption algorithm myself. Partly because they’re usually available in library form (e.g. in C# they’re built into the main library) but partly because I usually get about 15% of the way through the explanation of the process and fall asleep because of the amount of maths involved. Too many primes and too much modular arithmetic.

          • C++ is what I’m doing but last semester we used java in a project (but I didnt bother to take part in the coding part for my group) and this semester I have a project where I have to use python so I gotta learn that by myself.

          • C++ is good, but very deep and hard to use right. Most tutorials are pretty old so they teach stuff using raw pointers instead of the nice modern smart pointers.

Java is usuable (I made a little game for college with semi-realistic physics with it) but very limited becase of type erasure, the way it forces people to declare what exceptions are throwable, and the required ‘one file per class’ nonsense.

I’ve never really liked python much. I’ve never really written anything major in it, but I dabbled a bit with Iron Python and read an O’Reilly book about it and it never really took my fancy. I prefer Lua as a scripting language.

          • Well if C++ is raw then I think that’s the point. I’m doin computer eng so it’s make sense for me to learn the oldest way in case systems in the workplace are old.

          • Fair enough, I’d hope nothing would be older than Win XP though. Really you only need particularly low level stuff for assembly-level optimisation or for writing device drivers or interacting with hardware (e.g. via OpenGL).

I worry that there might still be some systems running on COBOL out there 😛

          • I think some of the names for regular moves could’ve been good for Z-moves but they already used them. I like most of these, I hope the rest of the real ones aren’t too terrible.

          • I’d need to sit around and think about it for a while, but I’d try to A) keep them close to the originals and B) make them sound more like regular moves and less like dance crazes

Some of them I’m ok with like Gigavolt Havok (original: ‘Super King Gigavolt’), Inferno Overdrive (original: ‘Dynamic Full Flame’) and Hydro Vortex (original: ‘Super Aqua Tornado’)

But stuff like Bloom Doom and Pulverising Pancake sound too frivolous to be terrifying. (Compare with “Hyper Beam”, “Draco Meteor”, “Meteor Mash”, all very strong, serious sounding moves)

For Bloom Doom I’d probably do something like “Floral Frenzy” or “Nature’s Wrath”. Admitedly the original name of that was awful too (Bloom Shine Extra).

Raichu’s move was originally “Lightning Surf Ride” (which is actually a pun if you know what the Japanese word ‘Rai’ means). To be honest in the English name I’m ok with the “Spark Surfer” bit, I just don’t like the “Stoked” bit, it sounds kind of outdated and puts me more in mind of stoking a fire than anything else. I would have preferred something like “Static Spark Surfer” or if they wanted to up the surfer theme a notch “Static Spark Shredder” since ‘shredding’ is surfer slang.

The one that bugs me more than anything though is Snorlax.
Snorlax’s original move was completely in Japanese but
translated to something like “it unleashes a serious attack” so I would
have gone for something like “Serious Slam” or “Super Serious Slam” at a
push. “Snorlax unleashed its Serious Slam” and “Snorlax’s Serious Slam”
sound pretty good. Pulverising Pancake feels like they’re throwing the whole “serious” aspect out of the window, and that was a major part of the attack (the Japanese website advertised the attack with phrases like “Snorlax finally gets serious”, and used the word ‘serious’ at least 3-4 times when discussing/describing the attack).

          • I forgot about Pikachu’s because my brain retconned it from existance…

I would have gone for something closer to the Japanese name. The Japanese name was (apparently, taking this one from serebii instead of video hunting again) “Knockout Pikachute” so I would have gone for either “Knockout Pikashoot” or “Pikashoot” with some other interesting adjective in front.

Extreme Evoboost is kind of dull but similar to the original.
I probably would have just changed it to “Extreme Eeveeboost” because it makes a better pun than “Catastropika”.

Hadn’t heard of All-Out Pummelling and Never-Ending Nightmare until now, but I’m fine with those, they’re much more serious and worry-enducing.

        • You kidding
A spoiled rich cat like Meowth would most likely use an attack that literally assaults the opponent with gold and jewels

          • I want there to be a legit Team Skull Squad that always tries to make trouble and they’re always punking on Team Rocket and they use an Alolan Meowth that is clearly better then Meowth

Also I want Bewear to be ‘in love” with team rocket and follows them around

          • Also Bewear tries to hug James all the time. I think an Alolan Meowth Rival would be cool. It may even be one that Meowth is in love with to start with but then develops a rivalry.

    • I think technically #3 is just the Park Ball before they had art of it (or the anime ignoring the legit stuff again).

I partly agree with crystal balls.

      Mewtwo’s balls are evil though.

Gen IV retconned them into “Sport Balls”.

To quote Bulbapedia: “To do this, Trainers are given twenty Sport Balls (similar to Safari Balls; called “Park Balls” in Generation II)”

          • They were the second games I ever played, and I think I actually saw that episode of the anime, hence how I know what they’re supposed to be.

Checking the wiki, Ash caught a Beedrill, won the competition, and gave the Beedrill to Casey, who only caught a Weedle. Dunno what happened to the Sun Stone he won though.

            A bit more detail though:
“The Park Balls pictured in this episode are vastly different from the later-introduced Sport Ball
in-game sprites, likely due to a design change between the time of
Generation II and Generation IV. This is similar to the alteration in
design of the Safari Ball, which appears differently between its anime debut and its Generation III reintroduction with an in-game sprite.”

It created not just earth but the creatures that created time and space and antimatter.
        It can create life
One of its roles is to pass “judgement” on the life of earth.
It is the single most powerful being, mega evolution not withstanding, in all of Pokémon.

At this point refuting that Arceus is God is like refuting that water is wet or the sky is blue…

        Reply
          • It is perceived as blue for everyone that can perceive it. So yes, for all intents and purposes it is blue

          • The skies can be grey, it depends on the concentration of water droplets in the clouds and the density of the clouds.
At night it’s very dark, almost black.

        • Yes, in the pokedex, made by humans.
Humans have a habit of distorting facts when they don’t have enough scientific evidence, especially older cultures.
In the real world, ancient cultures believed certain animals were sacred or incarnations of gods or god-like creatures. Hence Japanese legends about foxes and cats that shapeshift and cause havok.
Also some cultures believe their own people were gods. The Egyptians believes Pharaohs were gods.

All those ‘facts’ about it are just word of mouth passed down by the few humans who have actually witnessed it. If it was truly an omnipotent god capable of creation on such a scale, Arceus and the Jewel of Life would have been over in 5 seconds because Arceus could have just fixed the situation with a clap of its thousand arms.

          • Actually no… in each of the in game events in which the player is able to interact with Arceus it is seen performing “Godly” acts.
In the event for diamond and pearl it can only be reached by ascending to a point higher than the highest point in Sinnoh. A veritable Mount Olympus.

In HGSS it is seen creating an egg containing a new Dialga/Palkia/Giratina.

These aren’t just examples of human imagination and creativity. The player actually witnesses these acts first hand

          • It’s high, but it’s not the heavens.
Godly imagery yes, but it does not mean Arceus is actually a god.
Many pokemon can perform “Godly” acts. Walking on water, summoning rain, summoning lightning bolts, causing earthquakes etc.

Many pokemon can spawn eggs. Granted none physically create them from seemingly nothing, but Arceus did have to be in a special place to create the egg. If it was really a god it could make eggs whenever it felt like it.

Any sufficiently advanced power looks like magic. If a group of humans that had never seen a pokemon saw a Charmander breathe fire and evolve into Charmeleon, they would probably think it was some sort of god.

No human could possibly have witnessed Arceus creating the world because the humans would not yet have existed when it did so because there would be no world in which the humans could exist. Witnessing it create Sinnoh or other Pokemon maybe, but not the world. Other pokemon are also held responsible for creating regions though. Hoenn was said to be built by Groudon and Kyogre for example. Regigigas is said to have pulled the continents with ropes and created the other regis.

Arceus is not special, it’s just another legendary.

    • Same. I always loved the general idea of battling legendaries and not being able to capture them because come on! Why would a child be able to capture the creator of the land/sea/ozone or the personification of time/space or ideals/truths (or whatever tf reshiram and zekrom were), or the pokemon of life/death or the emissary of the sun/moon, etc.
