Professor Burnet in Sun & Moon?!

professor-burnetThe most recent Japanese Pokémon Sun & Moon trailer was an incredible showcase of what has been revealed so far. Featuring the already loveable new Pokémon, the immediately memorable new characters, and the gorgeous scenery of the instantaneous fan favorite Alola Region. The footage was wonderfully edited, being driven by text bubbles exclusively from noteable characters including Professor Kukui, your rival, Hau, all the Trial Captains, and more – but one text bubble stands out among the rest. The phrase in question can be found at the 1:25 mark of the trailer and reads a cut off sentence that talks about “Ultra Beasts” and the word “feared.” But what’s really interesting is who is saying this: Baanetto. Or, in English, Burnet.

For those who don’t remember, Professor Burnet is the researcher that aids you in your journey in the Pokémon Dream Radar 3DS app: the incredibly fun, quick-paced AR game from Gen V. Through the game it is revealed that Burnet studies the “Interdream Zone” (a space between dreams and reality) and that she’s friends with Fennel from college. But other than that not much is known about her.

So lets just assume that this Burnet talking is the one we met in Dream Radar – what does that mean for Sun & Moon? Well, if we look at it in a more serious light, in the latest Aether Foundation focused trailer where Ultra Beasts were first introduced, it seems that UB-01 comes out from a portal – and in the most recent trailer Solgaleo and Lunala jump into one. Many have theorized that these portals are leading to another dimension, but could these portals and Ultra Beats maybe have something to do with the Interdream Zone? Could Burnet be in Alola working for the Aether Foundation as part of her research, similar to Colress’ theorized and possible appearence in Sun & Moon? Could she have been working at a different branch of the AF all along? Or does this mean that a mini game similar to Dream Radar will have a presence in the game? Or does this prove absolutely nothing, we’ll most likely just get a meaningless cameo from Professor Burnet, and we’re reading into it too much? The latter…not so likely. The Pokémon Company is very careful about choosing names and making sure that important character names don’t repeat in the game canon. And it just seems so strange for this previously used name to be included amongst other key characters intentionally if they weren’t going to play a part in the storyline. Either way, only time can tell if Pokémon Sun & Moon will mark the return of Professor Burnet!

So what do you guys think? Do you think this is the same Burnet from Gen V? And how could she be related or fit into what’s happening in Sun & Moon?

  1. If Lockstin did Pokemon theories during B/W days… I think most of us would be left a little underwhelmed by the actual product. Even if 25% or 10% of his theories come into fruition, I doubt Sun/Moon will go that deep.

  2. Just a reminder that the tournament begins in less than 24 hours! 😀 Time to finish my team. And finalize the tournament style. xD Lol I’m the biggest procrastinator. Is everyone okay with: split the 20 participants into 2 groups of 10, round robin with your group, and ten the top 4 from each group move on to a single elimination tournament to decide type choice order. Sound good? I need some feedback, I want to know before people don’t like the style.

  3. Thinking about the main story, we have just few things to do:

    – Defeat 18 Captains with their trials.
    – Defeat 18 Boss Pokemon.
    – Discover where Z-moves comes from and collecting all stones with the help of Kukui.
    – Discover what’s behind Alola Form with the help of Oak’s cousin.
    – Do something that will allow us to use pokeride.
    – Defeat the 4 Kahuna of Alola.
    – Find and probably fight and capture the 4 Tapu Pokemon.
    – Discover and stop Team Skull from doing what they want to.
    – Discover what Aether Fondation is really doing.
    – Find out what the hell Zygarde means for this new region and collect all cells.
    – Discover what UB are and what they came to Alola for, maybe fight them.
    – Solve the plot around Solgaleo and Lunala, catch them and discover how their phases work.
    – Discover why Lillie is so important.
    – Discover who is Gladion and what exactly is Type: Null.
    – Maybe Magearna is involved in the plot…

Oh God, I see myself going up and down from an island to the other, then go back to the first and start it again. I already know I won’t have the time to go and see my mom before becoming the champion, again.

  4. Woah! While breeding my final Pokemon, I just got my first ever 6 IV! That’s odd considering I’ve bred like a box and a half of competitive Pokemon.

        • Ah, good to hear. I’ve got about 1/4 of a box not counting the ones I stashed away to be 5IV breeding slaves to help speed up the breeding of other species.

Assuming you’re using a ‘power’ item and a ‘destiny knot’, and assuming both parents have the same sets of perfect IVs there’s a 1/5 chance of getting a pokemon with 5 IVs and a 1/160 chance of getting a pokemon with 6IVs (I think). Just so you know the odds, so you can appreaciate the luck even more 😛

          • I think I’ve caught about 8 shinies in the wild. 3 of which were caught in one day, which was easily the luckiest thing to ever happen to me in pokemon 😛

Only ever bred one shiny though I think. I’m about 4 pokemon away from the shiny charm though (unless it’s caught and not seen).

          • I’ve got the oval charm, that’s for the regional dex (seeing).

Just checked, aparently shiny is for capturing, but excludes event pokemon, so theoretically I might already be able to get it (unless things like Dialga/Palkia/Giratina count).

  5. Hey guys…

If you think the chinese riddler’s riddles on leak were a shock to all of us, then perhaps with what I’m guessing based on the games as a whole would shock you even more, and what I mean by that, is where the next regions will be based.

So first of, for all those asking for a Pokemon Region based in Germany, India, or any other place throughout the world. May I say to most that those dreams will never happen, seeing that the Pokemon Company have already based their regions on these areas. And when I say Areas, I mean the geography of the world.

    For example…

    Gen 1 – 4: Japan
Gen 5: North America (New York City)
    Gen 6: Europe (France)
    Gen 7: Oceanic (Hawaii)

Now, if we jump beyond the possible release of a remake of Gen 4 with Gen 7, and go straight into the future to Gen 8. We must first of all think of what region is this new Pokemon game going to be based on. Best way of looking at it, is by looking at Gen 5, or it’s remake around that time. If we look at the pokemon in that game, you would find a few that seem to match a South American Theme. And if so, then could it be a hint to where this region for Gen 8 might be based on? Probably based on either Rio De Jenero or Mexico City. If we jump further to Gen 9, and a possible remake to Gen 6, another pattern would be seen in the form of Pancham. And quite possibly that eastern station in Kalos. Now, what if for argument’s sake, that this station doesn’t stop in Italy or Germany, but instead would stop in China (Asia), so could it be that Kalos would might have ties, or have been at war with a Chinese based region to the east thousands of years ago? And finally to gen 7, and the Koala Pokemon, it’s too obvious of which Region for Gen 10 that’s ganna be.

But don’t say that guessing of which geography based region is the only thing I have up my sleeves. Another is with the Fire Type Pokemon being based on the Chinese Zodiac. So far we’ve gotten 7, when now there’s only 5 to go.

So, here is the idea based on this theory guess is as follows…

Gen 8: South America (Rio/Mexico City) Fire Type: Ox (Gen 5 remake)
Gen 9: Asia (Beijing/Hong Kong) Fire Type: Rabbit (Gen 6 remake)
Gen 10: Australasia (Sydney) Fire Type: Sheep (Gen 7 remake)

Which now leaves to two more regions left based on Geography, and my guess could be as follows…

Gen 11: Africa (South Africa) Fire Type: Snake (Gen 8 remake)
Gen 12: Middle East (Dubai/Israel) Fire Type: Horse (gen 9 remake)

Perhaps after Gen 12, that’s where Pokemon would might call it a day, and might finish things off with remakes of Gen 10, 11 and 12.

But that’s only a short theory, I would like to hear from you of what you might think of this possibility?

  6. I just noticed this.
They revealed name, type, and abillity of the legendaries, mentioned they have other “forms” than neglected to ever mention them again.

  7. Could someone tell me what the very last dialogue box of the recent cool trailer says? Kukui is speaking in Japanese and I don’t understand it.

  8. I am so EXCITED!
We’re likely to see CoroCoro leaks in the next few hours!!!!! *____*
I AM DYING to know the secret behind Rockruff!
So, what are everyone’s final bets before we get a definite answer?
I’m in the majority that goes along with the leaks.
But does anyone have a differing view?

  9. If anything other than the starters’ evolutions have been shrouded in mystery since SM’s reveal, it would have to be Marshadow. Any thoughts, perhaps after months of forgetting about it, as to what it may be?

  11. If Ultra Beasts (Ultra Chimeras in French like @Aqualate:disqus said) are a human creation that means that UB-02 will be stronger than 01, 03 than 02 and so on… At some point they could have reached the “perfect” one and stopped creating versions.
