Professor Burnet in Sun & Moon?!

professor-burnetThe most recent Japanese Pokémon Sun & Moon trailer was an incredible showcase of what has been revealed so far. Featuring the already loveable new Pokémon, the immediately memorable new characters, and the gorgeous scenery of the instantaneous fan favorite Alola Region. The footage was wonderfully edited, being driven by text bubbles exclusively from noteable characters including Professor Kukui, your rival, Hau, all the Trial Captains, and more – but one text bubble stands out among the rest. The phrase in question can be found at the 1:25 mark of the trailer and reads a cut off sentence that talks about “Ultra Beasts” and the word “feared.” But what’s really interesting is who is saying this: Baanetto. Or, in English, Burnet.

For those who don’t remember, Professor Burnet is the researcher that aids you in your journey in the Pokémon Dream Radar 3DS app: the incredibly fun, quick-paced AR game from Gen V. Through the game it is revealed that Burnet studies the “Interdream Zone” (a space between dreams and reality) and that she’s friends with Fennel from college. But other than that not much is known about her.

So lets just assume that this Burnet talking is the one we met in Dream Radar – what does that mean for Sun & Moon? Well, if we look at it in a more serious light, in the latest Aether Foundation focused trailer where Ultra Beasts were first introduced, it seems that UB-01 comes out from a portal – and in the most recent trailer Solgaleo and Lunala jump into one. Many have theorized that these portals are leading to another dimension, but could these portals and Ultra Beats maybe have something to do with the Interdream Zone? Could Burnet be in Alola working for the Aether Foundation as part of her research, similar to Colress’ theorized and possible appearence in Sun & Moon? Could she have been working at a different branch of the AF all along? Or does this mean that a mini game similar to Dream Radar will have a presence in the game? Or does this prove absolutely nothing, we’ll most likely just get a meaningless cameo from Professor Burnet, and we’re reading into it too much? The latter…not so likely. The Pokémon Company is very careful about choosing names and making sure that important character names don’t repeat in the game canon. And it just seems so strange for this previously used name to be included amongst other key characters intentionally if they weren’t going to play a part in the storyline. Either way, only time can tell if Pokémon Sun & Moon will mark the return of Professor Burnet!

So what do you guys think? Do you think this is the same Burnet from Gen V? And how could she be related or fit into what’s happening in Sun & Moon?

  1. Theory: Kukui is actually evil?!

So as many people have speculated, Aether foundation seem kinda suspicious. I think they are evil and Kukui maybe is in alliance with them. Basically it all starts with Type:Null, who is a chimera and in alchemy a chimera is made when trying to combine multiple creatures together. People have already pointed out that Null’s helmet has four rods that look very similar to Arceus and that maybe it was a failed attempt at creating Arceus. Both Arceus and Null are both Normal type however Arceus can become any type. Look at Type:Null’s name though…null means invalid or zero, perhaps this is referencing that Null’s Type cannot change therefore it is a failure. In alchemy some believed that by combining the four elements of alchemy it can create God itself. The symbols for the four elements sulfur, salt, mercury, lead all show some resemblances to the starters and rockruff (who share a secret remember?). Null’s tail looks like a mermaid tail (Popplio final evo?), Null has green talons, the black body and legs look like litten and the head could be Rockruff (maybe Null’s mane is from Rockruff’s evo?). And who created Null? I think Aether Foundation did, Aether is the 5th element in alchemy and refers to some kind of divine substance. Aether also wear all white (Arceus is also white) so perhaps they have some sort of God complex. Many have also thought maybe Gladion (who uses Null) is related to the leader of Aether (can’t remember name) but left and took Null with him. People also believe that Lily is connected to Aether because she wears all white and looks similar to Gladion and the Aether leader. She also works with Kukui for unknown reasons. Perhaps she is working with the professor because he supplies the materials for these Arceus creating experiments Aether performs. Remember this theory believes that Rowlet, Litten, Popplio are all needed to try and create Arceus. Although Kukui doesn’t give us our pokemon this does not mean he gives no one Pokemon, and as a professor I am sure he has access to multiples of the three starters, which he secretly gives to Lily to bring back to Aether. Is this why something was in her bag? Was she just moving a pokemon for Aether to use? Those three are covered, but Rockruff is still needed and if you remember in a few trailers when Kukui is talking to use over video chat, a Rockruff pops up meaning maybe he is supplying Aether with starters and Rockruffs for their experiments….Thoughts?

        • Because that would mean ignoring Kukui and Guzma being failed trial captains, causing Guzma to start a villainous team and Kukui to become a professor. One does not become a pokemon professor and then become evil. Too much effort just to just flip the tables years down the line.

          • Kukui could have become a professor just to look for ways to obtain more power? Not saying he will be evil just food for thought

          • He wouldn’t need to be a professor to do that.

He’d have better luck as an explorer or founding a team seeking power or something.
Professors are mostly stuck in their labs all day or occaisionally out in the field just observing pokemon and making notes.

Becoming a pokemon professor to attain power would be like David Attenborough wacthing animals s to attain power.

  2. Guys. Why are Lusamine’s eyes so low on her face?
The top of her hair his where the top of her head must be and if you can actually see her eyes, then they’re REALLY low on her face.
(Also, If we’re still going with the Lusamine is a crazy scientist who experimented on her sister/daughter Lillie, then maybe she experiments on herself later and becomes a Synthetic Tapu. I mean… Look at her hair.)

  3. Hey guys. look at 1 min 47 seconds
Popplio is attacking something with a z-move, and it looks really weird… IDK what it is

  4. This pose is different to the other Z Moves. The rest have the fiery background and type/Pokemon related poses, this, this is something different.
    Could this be Mega Evolution?
We know the bracelet has a circle slot at the bottom, the Keystone fits easily.

Another idea is all Z Stones working in unison, though I’m not quite sure how that would work.

    • They’re all different in one way or another.
I’ll look up more of the context later but this could be summoning a ride or something.

      Reply
      • The context is, it’s shown after various Z moves.
All the others have a red fiery background, and type certain poses.
This one he bends down, then up like this, then an explosion of light, and the bracelets symbol flashes on screen.
        Certainly not a ride.

          • 1:40 is the start of the Z move part, watching these is important as it shows why this one stands out, then the 2:00 mark is this one, which is different.

          • Thanks.
I think the missing aura is probably because it’s special or something.
            It’s definately a Z move though.

          • That was another though, as it could be for a certain Pokemon, but it’s definitely stands out from the others

          • The sparkle effect indicates to me that it might be for a legendary or island guardian or something.
Or maybe it’s the trainer’s first attempt at using a Z move, or attempting to use a Z move without full Z power.

          • I think it’s interesting we didn’t see what it did, as in the after effect, as we did for the rest, seeing that it did would answer it.

    • That’s what I’m hoping, but the Z-move symbol appears over the character when he does this, instead of the Mega-Evolution symbol… Plus, the normal fire doesn’t appear behind the trainer.

      Time will tell!

      • I’m thinking that the Symbol could just be the bracelets symbol.
        OR
A Z Move/Mega Fusion, possibly what Ash Greninja is. For now we’ll nickname he idea, Z-Evolution.

        Reply
        • Why do people still think Ash-Greninja is a fusion? Its essentially a Mega Evolution, but without the need of a stone because the bond between trainer and Pokemon even surpasses that of a regular Mega. That, and Ash’s Greninja is obviously a descendant of the Ninja Village Hero

          Reply
          • I didn’t say Ash Greninja was a fusion.
I said it could be a fusion between Z moves and Mega Evolution, a Z Evolution.

          • I for one wouldn’t miss it, we’ve got way cooler stuff already confirmed. And by the point you acquired a Greninja it probably wouldn’t be that entertaining anyway.

          • Meh I think it should stay anime-exclusive. The XYZ arc experienced a slight spike in popularity, primarily due to Ash-Greninja. People loved it that Ash had his own unique and very much overpowered Pokemon

          • More to the point, why do people even think that would make it into the game at all?
The king of Pokelantis never made it in.
Pikachu’s boxing form never made it in.

          • Its Ash’s own exclusive Mega Evolution. Would also be too much of a hassle for the designers to come up with several Synchro designs.

          • It’s not really a mega evolution, it’s something different entirely.
It would be easier for designers to leave it out entirely and focus on the other elements already encorporated.

          • The king of pokelantis wasn’t a Pokemon, and all pikachu did was put in boxing gloves, this is a while differetn thing entirely, and I wouldnt rule it out as we still don’t know a lot about the games despite how much we’ve been shown, it’s still very much possible.
A Better example would have been Crystal Onix by the way. Man I’d love that in game.

          • The King of Pokelantis was an ancient character whom Ash shared similarities with (akin to the Ninja Village Hero).

Crystal Onix is in the same category as Pikachu wearing boxing gloves: a one off event. By that logic we’d also be getting Pinkan island and Pinkan berries.

And there are whole articles dedicated to the differences between the anime ant the games. You might as well argue we’re going to be getting a way of fusing moves together like they do in the anime, like Ash’s Buizel’s Ice Aqua Jet.

          • Again, that would actually be cool but I know that’s doubtful, like how it would be cool for pokemon to evolve mid battle, between gaining exp and the opponent choosing their next pokemon obviously. Cool but probably not gonna happen.
But nothing seems to be getting in the way of “Ash” Greninja existing in the games.
Right now I feel it’s something to do with Z Moves, crossed with evolution, it would make sense, but we’ll see. It’s just too prominent for it not to, not a one off thing, and with the anime arc getting closer and closer to the end, we’ll find out soon

          • I don’t think it makes any more sense than move fusions. If anything move fusions make more sense since contests had a mechanism in which moves could be chained to produce bonus effects.

Aside from anything else, the player is not Ash, so ‘Ash Greninja’ wouldn’t have a reason to resemble Ash, it’d have to resemble the player. It would also imply every player is a decendant of the Ninja warrior. Not to mention it doesn’t use a stone of any kind, something which is required for both mega evolution and Z moves.

          • All I’m saying is Syncho Evolution or Z Evolution or whatever you want to call it could very well be in the games, and related to Z Moves. Maybe not Ash Greninja exactly no matter how cool that would be, but something along those lines. Just because you don’t think so, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. From what I’ve read on this site you’re only here to tell people they’re wrong tbh.
Also, just cause it doesn’t have something, doesn’t mean it’s not it, Mewtwo and Diancie both mega evolved in the anime without Mega Stones and Keystones, and Zygarde doesn’t need the Z Cube, so that’s not the best reasoning. Now an other idea is that it’s just a coincidence it resembles Ash, and is in fact what all Greninja look like in that state.
This conversation is over because you clearly just can’t accept that someone has an idea you don’t like.
If it doesn’t happen I’ll accept that, but I’m pretty sure it will, and won’t back out of the idea until actually proven.

          • It would have to be its own mechanic and would have to apply to more than just one Pokemon or it’s not worth the time it would cost the developers to add it.
I’m not saying this because I agree/disagree with it being added as a concept, I’m thinking realistically from the perspective of the programmers/developers and saying it’s unlikely.

I only disagree with ideas that I don’t think have enough logical foundation underpinning them. A lot of people come up with ideas and say “this is going to happen” just because they want them to happen rather than because there is sufficient evidence to make them plausible/likely.

The Diancie incident was actually explained “At the end of the movie, it was shown that a diamond Diancie had created and given to Bonnie earlier caused it to Mega Evolve, acting as a Key Stone.”. As for the Z cube, its functionality hasn’t been explained yet and a Zygarde has existed without it in XY, so there’s nothing to say it needs the Z cube or that Zygarde’s forms are even related to mega evolution. Before mega evolution was around, pokemon did just change form, it’s only in recent years that people are quick to rush to mega evolution as an explanation to things and it’s lead to them forgetting that simple items can be used.

Had the anime explained Ash Greninja as being item-related or were the bond phenomenon being introduced as a major function that can affect other pokemon I’d be more open to the idea, but they decided to explain it as something mystical and intangible and it only features in the anime.

If more genuine evidence turns up I might change my mind, but until then the only suggestions we have that it might happen are from reddit and 4chan, which aren’t exactly trustworth sources of information. Their rumours are wrong far more often than they are correct.

  5. Hmmm ok I was looking at the part that @spectralseraph:disqus was talking about and slowed down the video. I took a screen shot of it too. It kind of looks like it has legs. Maybe it’s Salandit? That’s the best guess I’ve got anyway.

So basically Mega Evolution and Z Moves
In game evidence: “In Pokémon X and Y, a Backpacker found on Route 10 references him by saying, “A few years back, this really strange dude named Colress told me that these big stones emit some kind of special energy.””

      • In XY there’s a backpacker on route 10 who tells you ”years ago, there was this really strange man named Colress who told me there are these big stones that emit a special energy”

Colress 100% returning in Sun and Moon. Screenshot this comment if it turns out false.

  6. What if….
THE ROTOM POKEDEX IS DEVELOPED AND MADE BY CORLESS
I know it sounds weird, but he may be in the game
And to my knowledge, besides battle facilities, no in game trainers BESIDES Corless have a Rotom
And this may seem weird, but Corless begins to realize the bonds between person and pokemon are what makes their true powers come forth.
And the Rotom Dex is said to (I forgot where from) is to help build bond between trainer and pokemon
So perhaps Corless made (Or helped make) the rotom dex
Or i could just be overreacting
