Professor Burnet in Sun & Moon?!

professor-burnetThe most recent Japanese Pokémon Sun & Moon trailer was an incredible showcase of what has been revealed so far. Featuring the already loveable new Pokémon, the immediately memorable new characters, and the gorgeous scenery of the instantaneous fan favorite Alola Region. The footage was wonderfully edited, being driven by text bubbles exclusively from noteable characters including Professor Kukui, your rival, Hau, all the Trial Captains, and more – but one text bubble stands out among the rest. The phrase in question can be found at the 1:25 mark of the trailer and reads a cut off sentence that talks about “Ultra Beasts” and the word “feared.” But what’s really interesting is who is saying this: Baanetto. Or, in English, Burnet.

For those who don’t remember, Professor Burnet is the researcher that aids you in your journey in the Pokémon Dream Radar 3DS app: the incredibly fun, quick-paced AR game from Gen V. Through the game it is revealed that Burnet studies the “Interdream Zone” (a space between dreams and reality) and that she’s friends with Fennel from college. But other than that not much is known about her.

So lets just assume that this Burnet talking is the one we met in Dream Radar – what does that mean for Sun & Moon? Well, if we look at it in a more serious light, in the latest Aether Foundation focused trailer where Ultra Beasts were first introduced, it seems that UB-01 comes out from a portal – and in the most recent trailer Solgaleo and Lunala jump into one. Many have theorized that these portals are leading to another dimension, but could these portals and Ultra Beats maybe have something to do with the Interdream Zone? Could Burnet be in Alola working for the Aether Foundation as part of her research, similar to Colress’ theorized and possible appearence in Sun & Moon? Could she have been working at a different branch of the AF all along? Or does this mean that a mini game similar to Dream Radar will have a presence in the game? Or does this prove absolutely nothing, we’ll most likely just get a meaningless cameo from Professor Burnet, and we’re reading into it too much? The latter…not so likely. The Pokémon Company is very careful about choosing names and making sure that important character names don’t repeat in the game canon. And it just seems so strange for this previously used name to be included amongst other key characters intentionally if they weren’t going to play a part in the storyline. Either way, only time can tell if Pokémon Sun & Moon will mark the return of Professor Burnet!

So what do you guys think? Do you think this is the same Burnet from Gen V? And how could she be related or fit into what’s happening in Sun & Moon?

  1. I’m actually kind of excited to see who else they decide to bring in. They don’t typically bring in the side people to the main games so with they really ARE “bringing it all together” lol

  2. Hmmm, that’s interesting. Considering that the Interdream Zone is the space between dreams and reality, maybe it’s a connecting point? Or she’s researching how to get to the other side of the portal, to see where the UBs come from?

    • Yeah I could see her being the go to person for them when they need info about interdimensional travel. Which makes sense as no other professors or otherwise have that kind of information iirc.

  3. I don’t think they would introduce another character with the same name as another character but it would be really cool if it were the same

  4. Yes yes yessss. Give me more connectivity and continuity between the games. I want burnet, colress, phoebe, volkner, and stuff like that.

  7. There’s also what it seems to be a new Pokemon in the trailer. At 0:41 seconds but its only a split second and you have to pause at the right moment. It seems to be a bunny with pink ears with black tips. A lot of people initially thought it was a Bunnelby, but their ears dont have black tips and their shiny is not pink if I’m not mistaken.

  8. Don’t know if this was already pointed out, but there may be a new fish in the trailer of the 6th of september.
In the frame below almost all boats have water pokemon style:
    Bottom Left: Magikarp
    Left: Hauntail
    Top Left: Wailord
    Centre-Right: Wailord.

Now the interesting thing is that those boats respect also colour patterns of real pokemon. Then, who’s the silver fish of the top right boat?

  9. Still if what I’ve heard is true we know might happen

A Wimpod Evo from looks of boat

A Pink Bunny with Black tips

And possibly something that looks like Dorimon (Rf) for image (it’s 10 seconds in)

  12. Speaking of Lockstin. He just uploaded a new video that debunks ProtoMario’s theory that Game Freak/Pokemon Company cannot afford it to reboot the franchise. Sales numbers/TV ratings have been steadily declining since gen 2 actually, there was a slight spike with gen 4 but it dropped again after.

So, in theory, rebooting the franchise might actually end up saving it.

    • Unless Sun/Moon /is/ the reboot. We won’t know how well the Pokemon company is doing until we see sales numbers for this game, see what happens with the NX, and see what Pokemon game comes out for that. They’re not going to scrap all that they’ve built just to start from square one, but they may change a few features or systems around to better appeal to new audiences while keeping their old ones.

      • Sun and Moon will add new elements, but at the core it is still the same. You’re a kid traveling a region wtih your pets and you battle other Pokemon and trainers to level up, fight a crime organization and challenge the league (in this case Island Challenges). They add elements to the games, but they don’t change it drastically.

        • Indeed, and Gen 8 may change some of that around, but in order to appeal to their target demographic (which, let’s remember, is 10 year-olds, which is why Ash hasn’t aged at all in 20 years), they need to keep the main game relatively simple. Having a clearly defined bad guy, clearly defined goals, and a few good twists in there is what you would expect. It’s our fault for being in our 20+’s that we want more and are frustrated when our expectations are shattered, because GameFreak isn’t marketing those aspects of the game to us older peeps.

          • Precisely.

Frankly I’m perfectly ok with pokemon staying reasonably childish and simple as long as we get some good pokemon and good locations. If pokemon had been dark and got a higher age rating I’d have never been allowed to play it when I was younger.

Also I think people are really asking way too much from the developers.
The existing map is huge, we’ve already got two major teams in the story, the new Z moves, Alolan forms, a Rotom pokedex, trial captains etc etc

And still people want mega evolutions and ash greninja and 101 characters from old games returning. There is a point where you physically cannot put any more in the cartridge or do not have the time to finish everything.

Anyone who knows anything about game development knows that 70-80% of the programming side of things is fixing bugs, not adding new stuff. Given the amount of stuff we’ve got, there must be at least 10,000 bugs in their bug database.

          • No it isn’t. You obviously don’t understand what reboot means. Look at the new Zelda game. Is it in any way similar to previous titles? Its an open-world action RPG

          • Looks pretty similar to every other Zelda game I’ve seen. You run around, fight monsters, gather tools and abilities, fight more monsters, solve puzzles, curse at the water temple, etc.

          • You forgot that there’s a story involving, magic, demons and a legendary artefact.

Seriously, Zelda will never escape its tropes 😛

          • To you, fine but it isn’t. Anouama specifically said in 2013 he wanted the next Zelda game to be a completely different experience from previous titles. And thats exactly what it is. There has never before been an open-world Zelda game. Nintendo chose to change the entire concept of the game. That is rebooting

          • Not really.
The plot was original and there were a few new mechanics, but it was mostly a different take on a Link To The Past.

          • They do something similar with every Zelda game. Even if it’s still based in Hyrule, the gameplay is completely different. As was said before, the Zelda franchise has that sort of flexibility.

Similarly, they’ve done other kinds of Pokemon games too. Pokken Tournament, Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, Stadium, etc. All of these had vastly different playstyles and stories, different characters, whole different themes, and they can do that, but we’re talking about the main series of Pokemon RPG s.

          • Pokemon has that flexibility too. If Nintendo can change the formula of two of their biggest franchises Zelda and Mario there is literally no arguement to support anything otherwise for Pokemon as well.

          • Mario never really had a formula beyond ‘Jump on platforms’.

A lot of games were sidescrolling platformers, but they’ve varied to things like Mario Paint and Mario 64 quite early on. Mario Story (Paper Mario) was quite early too, not to mention Super Mario RPG.

          • But there’s no argument to support them changing that formula either, except a bunch of grumpy 20-something’s that want a Pokemon MMO.

          • The fact Sun and Moon has many references to gen 1 (Alola formes, Mimikyu to name a few) and what about the recent TCG expansion being made in the style of the original cards? Hints are everywhere if you know where to look.

          • Of course I do. But LoZ is far more flexible than pokemon.
Plus Lockstin’s theory of a reboot doesn’t have any real evidence apart from a bunch of cherry picked information to make it seem like SUMO is the end of pokemon.

          • Theories dont have to have evidence, hence why they’re called theories. And he literally showed the sales numbers+total numbers made by the franchise in 20 years. It has been in decline except for a slight spike with gen 4.

          • Still selling 10+ million and it’s unlikely to go under with SUMO. Especially with Go resurging the popularity.

          • Yes, the same people who initially lost interest in Pokemon because it became too stale and the gameplay didn’t grow along with them

          • losing 15 million is pittance compared to the millions of players WORLDWIDE still playing, and again, those numbers are of weekly logins, NOT actual player accounts lost. This just means people are playing it less, which happens with every game. Ever.

          • Completely expected. It was hyping during summer because it was the popular thing.
Let’s see how many people want to play it when Winter comes XD

          • I couldn’t help but notice in that chart he shows of the value of Pokemon that it’s gone up significantly. Yes, probably due to Pokemon Go, but there are a million factors involved. Inflation, the cost of handheld systems back then versus now, and the changing demographic. Back in Red/Blue days, a gameboy was a godsend on plane rides, road trips, etc to keep kids entertained. Now, kids have smart phones, laptops, and other game consoles and computers to do the same, so parents think, ‘why do they need another 200+ dollar console when he can just play candy crush?’

And yeah, no evidence needed for theories.. I theorize that the sun is actually blue because aliens put an invisible yellow shield around it. No evidence, just my theory.

          • “And yeah, no evidence needed for theories.. I theorize that the sun is
actually blue because aliens put an invisible yellow shield around it.
            No evidence, just my theory.”

Every other theory I read on here.

          • Right, but then what’s the point of calling it a reboot? When Gen 8 comes out, people will still call it Gen 8, even if they change the battle system, only let you access other Pokemon until after you beat the game, etc. As long as it’s a progressive RPG where you go on a journey with a team of Pokemon, it’ll just be the next generation, and people will hail the new/changed features as all well and good.

Reboot according to some theories DOES mean removing. Lockstin keeps talking about them changing the designs, typings, and lists of the original 151 Pokemon in order to do a reboot. That kind of a thing I just don’t see them doing.

          • Just because some people are so uneducated to think that reboot means removing doesn’t actually mean thats what might happen. Reboot has never been removing, its starting over. Rebirth, resurrection, whatever

          • In every instance of ‘reboot’ or ‘reset’ that I’ve seen, it means a starting over, a fresh start. Reboot of Ninja Turtles, reboot of Transformers, reboot of ReBoot, it’s starting from the beginning, ideally with a new angle. The definition of reboot is to literally boot a computer over again, to restart it.

We can argue the semantics of the definition all day, and insult each others intelligence (which is super mature btw), or we can agree to disagree. We won’t know either way for another 4+ years anyway, and that’s plenty of time for lots of things to change within the Pokemon franchise.

      • Completely overhaul the franchise. New story, new characters, new gameplay etc. Still set in the same universe and regions, but drastically altered.
