Pokémon ORAS Review Round-up

The embargo for ORAS review has lifted and reviews are now out in the wild. I’ve rounded up some of them here. Are you excited for ORAS launching this Friday (or next week) and are you curious if they live up to the hype. Spoilers: Nope, they are the worst Pokémon games ever.

  • Gamespot – Give these remakes enough time, and you begin to understand why Pokemon’s formula hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s a seemingly simple and cute journey, but with the underlying potential for strategy in combat, and a massive number of adorable Pokemon to catch, you can’t help getting hooked by Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. 8/10
  • GoNintendo – Overall, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire is a good improvement over the original Sapphire as well as last year’s X/Y releases. While it may not be the right game for players to jump back into the series or into it for the first time, it’s more enjoyable with a lot of streamlined features while adding new design elements that attempt to engage players in more aspects of the game.
  • IGN – As a 3D remake, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby do a fantastic job of reintroducing Hoenn. Little details, like characters turning their heads to look as you pass or flocks of Wingulls flying overhead, make the region really come to life, and small updates and tweaks help make the journey smoother.
  • Joystiq – Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire do little to overhaul the major pillars of a series that’s long relied on the same set of classic ideas, but they don’t have to. The core mechanics of Pokemon remain immensely addictive, and Game Freak’s latest coat of polish only enhances an already captivating adventure. 4.5/5
  • Nintendo World Report – Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are way better games than last year’s X/Y while also improving on the Game Boy Advance originals. 9/10
  • Daely Reviews – With the lack of Mega Flygon, no Mega Milotic and no Battle Frontier, these are literally the worst Pokémon games ever. Ever. 2/10.

There are more reviews on Metacritic, which all seem favourable so go check them out!

  2. No battle frontier is a Really Bad move.. it was a Lot of people’s favorite. But I am sure this is because the XY last installment is not too far from release can’t think if a better reason..

  5. 7.9 seems like a decent rating for ORAS from IGN.
They put a lot of thought into all of their reviews, so this is no different.
Keep in mind they can’t give it a 10/10 just because “Hoenn is bae” or even for nostalgia.
They see things a lot differently than we do, that’s their job. Writing reviews requires in-depth research into every part of a game, which is something we as ordinary gamers do not normally look into.
HMs in this game and field moves overall are definitely more overwhelming than XY.
    (Dive, Flash, Secret Power…)
And water has always been a big problem in Hoenn.
I completely agree with their rating, again due to their full research of the game.
(And you guys can’t even judge them for giving it 7.9 because you don’t even have games yet smh.)

(Repost from last article because I didn’t know there was a new one.)

    • I have the opposite view. In that us as fans would look more deeply into the games and reviewers will barely scratch the surface, since like you said they see it as a job as opposed to actually enjoying the game.

      If that makes any sense.

  6. School is evil… It prevents me from seeing all the recent leaks. So what has leaked in the past few hours besides the cable car and hot springs?

        • This doesn’t mean they could make a big update with it in it though. Sure, it’s highly unlikely but Gamefreak has surprised us before. Just look at BW2

  7. Okay so why are people saying there are no new mega’s? I would love to see this article that states this. Of course i am pretty sure there cant be one since reviewers are normally not allowed to talk about post-game content and this has always been the case for Pokemon. Also i am pretty sure none of the leakers are in to the post game yet so unless i missed something….

  8. While I’m still excited for the game, this definitely disappoints me:

  9. Everyone is getting bummed out about no BF! How do we know they don’t have anything planned! WHAT IF the Battle frontier is a TIMED event like the casino event or the extra items in Lilycove department store was! WHAT IF we have to complete the WHOLE story in order to access it. Several trainers in the game state that the Battle Frontier is BEING BUILT SOON! How do we know we are not getting it :D!!!

  10. Anyone here besides me find it pretty funny that games like ORAS, LBP3, and Dragon Age are getting some meh reviews, yet when actually played are fun and never find any of the issues they mention (looking at you IGN).

  11. It is impossible for ORAS to not feature any new megas besides the ones we already know about. A Nintendo representative specifically stated that there were Megas still left for players to discover. Besides, just because there are no new ones YET doesn’t mean that there will never be any new ones. They could be time based like in XY.
