JungleTalk: Competitive

With our final update for PJT scheduled tomorrow, what better time than now to talk about the competitive scene in Pokémon?

Competitive Battling in Pokémon really is a huge deal, there’s an annual World Championship tournament to find the world’s best Pokémon trainer, entire websites dedicated to battling and much, much more.

This JungleTalk is a relatively simple an broad one, just focusing on the competitive aspect of Pokémon as a whole. We want to know any memorable battles you’ve had, any cool sweeps or times you’ve fallen victim to an effective sweep, your favorite Pokémon you like to use in battle…

Anything! Tell us about your competitive experiences! We’re looking forward to hosting our biggest tournament (the first of many to come, no less!) and can’t wait to begin in just a few days! 😀

  1. As much as I would’ve loved to join the tournament, I’m afraid of getting swept by a Weedle in my first battle. So yeah. xD

  2. LOL, love the pic NL!

I’ve yet to battle competitively, but there was a battle I had against a guy in England. We had a Rotation Battle and used Game Chat. We complemented each other and told each other what we did wrong. We even had a rematch! I lost…again. Then again, he used legendaries and I didn’t. XD

  4. That article image… looks like something Djja drew, if anyone remembers his May and Max drawing.

I guess I’ll start with my worst battle memory. I got swept by @regidudeam:disqus 6-0 a few months back. I don’t make excuses, a loss is a loss. However, I did start competitive battling this generation in X and Y. I learned a lot about IVs, EVs and natures. Although I lost terribly, I learned so much from Regi in that one single battle, stuff that I still remember and use to this day. So thank you, Regi, for beating my ass. <3

My best memory? Honestly, anything with my shiny Milotic named Sirena. Firstly, I named her Sirena for many reasons, one of them NOT being how closely it sounds to Serena. Sirena is Spanish for "mermaid", and as many as you know, I am Hispanic based simply off of my username. Mermaids are also seen as "beautiful" and "mystical"… things that I see in my Milotic.
Sirena has come up so clutch for me in late game or game changing scenarios. Whether a burn from scald, tanking hits for days, use confuse ray and the opponent hits themselves… these are just some of the ways she's helped me so much. I remember I was sweeping @TCMets:disqus, I was actually going to beat him for the first time ever, but we got disconnected. But none of this would be possible in the first place without Ammy, so thank you very much. 🙂 <3

  5. What will the outcome of a battle be if it is interrupted due to a dodgy Internet connection?

I’m curious cos my internet has been quite bad lately. I’ll happily concede the battle if something like that happens though…no arguments. 🙂

  6. So many good memories for battling but my top 3 are:
1- Me vs Regi, we were both on our last pokemon my beeheyem vs his dugtrio i was expecting sucker punch so i used cosmic power but he predicted that and used EQ and 2HKO.
2- Me vs NL, Substitute + Minimize + Psych Up + Stall = Good game for me it was 4-0 and from that day i am scare when i battle NL
3- Me vs SMSceptile, We were down to 2vs1 my granbull that was yellow in HP and his burned excadrill and paralyzed goodra. I thought it was good game for me when that excadrill used EQ but luckily i survived and killed his excadrill and OHKO his goodra. That battle was maybe one of the most intense battle i had.

I love competitve battling, if it wasnt for competitve battling, my Y copy would be full of dust

  7. So, I was watching a BT video and he was talking about hoopa. I thought he was exaggerating when he said how frail hoopla was, so I did some calcs. They results were hilarious XD

    0- Atk Alomomola Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Hoopa: 304-360 (100.9 – 119.6%) — guaranteed OHK

    Pretty sad

  8. The one time I had my revenge on the Battle Maison and I haxed it as payback for all the hax it’s done to me. This is old, so I hope this still works! I just feel sorry the victim had to be Battle Chatelaine Evelyn…

  9. Damn, looks like someone needs to borrow my cop of Pokemon Art Acadmey, there’s like no shading at all, poor, just poor
I’ve never really played online/competitively. Like, if someone challenges me to a battle on the PSS and I’m not doing anything important, I’ll go ahead. For the majority, I win as I do breed competitive pokemon for fun. Idk, I might start on Showdown or something like that
