Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Mega Evolution

Welcome to Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

As you may remember, last year we had ran an ongoing set of feature articles in the run-up to the launch of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. We called the series Journey to X & Y and in it we explored a variety of different topics and ideas, creating some intense and interesting discussion. Due to some bad time management we cut the series short before we had covered each generation of Pokémon and never reached the third generation; a couple of months back however, we rebooted it with Generation 3. Then came the announcement of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire…

What better way to countdown to the release of Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire than with a new series of articles? (There is no better way, duh.) It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Much like J2XY this series will begin with articles every so often, then ramping up in the weeks before the games release. We’ll be bringing you different topics and ideas for discussion, as well us some interesting new things for the site, so keep an eye out!

First things first…

The first article in the series however feature on Mega Evolution. Now, a week or so ago some of you may have known that myself and a few other staff members were unable to publish articles due to an odd bug with the site. That’s fixed now. During the downtime I asked a certain someone if they would mind logging in to my account and seeing if they could access the publishing tools. That certain someone was DefensiveBastiodon (he also takes credit for my wonderful bio text and avatar).

I simply asked him to set up an article with a title to see if I could edit in my own post content. That’s not quite what I got though. Instead he had written out a full article for me. Usually I’m against publishing material others have created, because…I just like seeing my own work too much. Deleting it all would have felt a little harsh though. So, with full credit to my good friend DefensiveBastiodon I present to you the very first Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire!

Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Mega Evolutions

Pokémon X and Y introduced the world to Mega Evolutions back in 2013. Since then they have been accepted and have gained momentum as a popular way to change the tides of battle, despite the fans’ uncertainty about the idea when they were first revealed. Probably the most unfortunate part about their introduction was the small number of Megas actually released. It was like a missing spice in a new dish being served to the public, only waiting to slightly disappoint customers and cause them to rage until the next course; this next course being the long awaited return to the ever popular region, Hoenn, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in November.

With that being said, what new Mega Evolutions do you want to see in ORAS? We already know that there will be at least two new ones, Mega Latios and Mega Latias. There are the also possibilities of Swampert and Sceptile getting Mega Evolutions to coincide with their Fire-Type brethren, Blaziken. Not only that, but there are some ever so popular rumors of Plusle and Minun getting Megas, along with Metagross. It is highly doubtful that, although it was mentioned Mega Evolution was a feature exclusive to Kalos, it is something Game Freak would leave out of future games. What abilities would you like to see introduced alongside the new Megas? Would you like to see them in the after game or have some mysterious part in the main story?

From the looks of it, it seems that Groudon and Kyogre have new forms, but I’m leaning towards them being Megas as well. They have too many feature changes for me to accept them as a form change. “Alpha Form” and “Omega Form?” Who knows, it’s a possibility as well.

  2. Hoenn exclusive Megas are Blaziken, Gardevoir, Mawile, Aggron, Medicham, Manectric, Banette, Absol and the Latis

Personally, I’d like to see Ludicolo/Shiftry having a crack on the Mega scene as well as a few others that’ll hopefully take me by surprise (Sceptile & Swampert won’t be surprises if they are revealed, if not, then favouritism)

One of the big things I think, is whether we’ll have Blaziken Omega and Alpha, much like Charizard?
It is exciting to see how they’ll change the Pokemon’s design and I can’t wait
(But much like XY, I won’t be using them ingame, too easy IMO)

  3. Give Masquerain a mega and invent a special ability to abuse rain more than any Pokemon did, so that beauty has a chance to shine its name.

  6. Do you think that the X and Y exclusive megas like Charizard X or Mewtwo Y will be version exclusives? I think the X megas will go to Sapphire and Y will go to Ruby

    • I don’t think they’ll be exclusives anymore but they’ll still be called Mega Charizard X and Y. I have to wonder what exclusives ORAS are going to have. Also, welcome to Pokejungle! ^-^

  7. Whoa, slow down with the high expectations or you’re gonna crash xD

I could go on about how a Mega Golem could be an awesome addition too by taking the Aggron route of losing a type and with that its quad weaknesses, while gaining Solid Rock etcetc and fanspeculate the heck out of new mega evolutions, but I’ll have to be the voice of doubt here and say that this is a topic woth discussing on its own, without dragging ORAS into it.

ORAS is going to be about revisiting Hoenn. Not about how awesome mega evolution is. That was the whole focus of XY.

No one is saying Megas will be taken out, but that doesn’t even remotely imply that they would add them like cookies with every game from now on.

But let me get to the main assumptions here that people use in this argument currently:
1.Mega Latias/Latios are a given –> what else might we see get mega?
2.Blaziken has a Mega evolution –> Swampert and Sceptile are obviously getting theirs.

    1. The problem here is how we know that Lati@s are getting theirs. We know, because they are already in XYs data all along. The logical question that follows is, WHY??
Why would they put the Megas into XY if they CLEARLY aren’t going to be made use of until the next games, that actually happen to be about their native region? Why not put the other Megas yet to come too? Or rather, if they can add other swithout having to add them like the Lati@s into XY beforehand, then why include Lati@s in the first place???…
The only explanation here seems to be compatibility (if you have a better one, I’m eager to hear it), which fits the choice to make mega stones tradeable like any regular item. And that would unfortunately fort this topic mean those two are the only “new” mega evolutions we are getting anytime soon.

Conclusion/Prediction/tldr: Mega Lati@s are the only new Megas in ORAS. XY were about Megas, ORAS is about revisiting Hoenn.

2.Think about that brilliant logic here for a moment. Out of all the other starters (non-Kanto/Kalos), they picked a single one to distribute a secret special overpowered Mega evolution for in XY, Blaziken, KNOWING AHEAD OF TIME that the games RIGHT AFTER were going to feature it as one of the starters after more than a decade. Unless they did this because they wanted Mega Blaziken “out” by the time ORAS comes out for some reason (for things like that raging fist TCG set and the Pokken fighters game perhaps? some other marketing where it’ll have a relevant role? idk), so that it doesn’t distract from the regular starter gameplay of ORAS (like using regular non-hidden-ability Blaziken for the story), it makes no sense to distribute it in XY, instead of for example keeping it unreleased until ORAS, along with Swamperts and Sceptiles supposed megas. If they at any moment seriously intended to have all 3 starters get Megas anytime soon, they would have put 2 and 2 together and revealed ALL 3 together for ORAS, or not at all.
Therefore, if anything, its safe to assume Sceptile and Swampert aren’t getting Megas in ORAS. Blazikenite itself probably isn’t gonna show up a second time for now (it was a special wifi event less than a year ago!), and if it is, its gonna be somewhere optional and unrelated in the post-game.

Conclusion/Prediction/tldr: Don’t get your hopes up for Swampert/Sceptile megas.

Another thing I’d like to address is the mascots appearances on the covers.
Here again I see the same quick guess made as elsewhere: “maybe they’re Mega evolutionsssss.”

And I have to disagree on that being a reasonable possibility.

Mega evolutions were a mechanic added so gamefreak has a justification for creating new powerful forms to regular Pokemon without actually evolving them a fourth time.

Whatever that is happening to the mascots on the covers, even if it ends up working similarly to mega evolutions anyway (where they power up in battle with some trigger), as with proper formes before, I bet they’ll continue adding unique prefixes, in this case Omega and Alpha in front of their names, akin to Black/White Kyurem, Wash Rotom, Therians and so on.. (instead of a shared generic “Mega” prefix for the shared reason to those transformations)

They’ll have a unqiue reason for their “transformation” or whatever it is, and its not gonna be “they’re bonding with their trainer and reacting to mega stones we pulled out of our behind all of a sudden!”. At closest, it would be that the Red/Blue orbs would function similar this time, but they’d still not be actually considered mega evolutions, but their own thing with their own unique justification.

Conclusion/Prediction/tldr: Alpha Kyogre and Omega Groudon they’ll be.
