Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Mega Evolution

Welcome to Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

As you may remember, last year we had ran an ongoing set of feature articles in the run-up to the launch of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. We called the series Journey to X & Y and in it we explored a variety of different topics and ideas, creating some intense and interesting discussion. Due to some bad time management we cut the series short before we had covered each generation of Pokémon and never reached the third generation; a couple of months back however, we rebooted it with Generation 3. Then came the announcement of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire…

What better way to countdown to the release of Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire than with a new series of articles? (There is no better way, duh.) It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Much like J2XY this series will begin with articles every so often, then ramping up in the weeks before the games release. We’ll be bringing you different topics and ideas for discussion, as well us some interesting new things for the site, so keep an eye out!

First things first…

The first article in the series however feature on Mega Evolution. Now, a week or so ago some of you may have known that myself and a few other staff members were unable to publish articles due to an odd bug with the site. That’s fixed now. During the downtime I asked a certain someone if they would mind logging in to my account and seeing if they could access the publishing tools. That certain someone was DefensiveBastiodon (he also takes credit for my wonderful bio text and avatar).

I simply asked him to set up an article with a title to see if I could edit in my own post content. That’s not quite what I got though. Instead he had written out a full article for me. Usually I’m against publishing material others have created, because…I just like seeing my own work too much. Deleting it all would have felt a little harsh though. So, with full credit to my good friend DefensiveBastiodon I present to you the very first Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire!

Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Mega Evolutions

Pokémon X and Y introduced the world to Mega Evolutions back in 2013. Since then they have been accepted and have gained momentum as a popular way to change the tides of battle, despite the fans’ uncertainty about the idea when they were first revealed. Probably the most unfortunate part about their introduction was the small number of Megas actually released. It was like a missing spice in a new dish being served to the public, only waiting to slightly disappoint customers and cause them to rage until the next course; this next course being the long awaited return to the ever popular region, Hoenn, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in November.

With that being said, what new Mega Evolutions do you want to see in ORAS? We already know that there will be at least two new ones, Mega Latios and Mega Latias. There are the also possibilities of Swampert and Sceptile getting Mega Evolutions to coincide with their Fire-Type brethren, Blaziken. Not only that, but there are some ever so popular rumors of Plusle and Minun getting Megas, along with Metagross. It is highly doubtful that, although it was mentioned Mega Evolution was a feature exclusive to Kalos, it is something Game Freak would leave out of future games. What abilities would you like to see introduced alongside the new Megas? Would you like to see them in the after game or have some mysterious part in the main story?

From the looks of it, it seems that Groudon and Kyogre have new forms, but I’m leaning towards them being Megas as well. They have too many feature changes for me to accept them as a form change. “Alpha Form” and “Omega Form?” Who knows, it’s a possibility as well.

  1. I’ll be excited for any gen III Pokemon to get a mega evolution…as long as Kecleon is one of them. I have a Protean Kecleon that I love using but it’s usually only good at certain situations.

    • I 100% agree. I have one with tutored moves from gen 5 and it slays. A mega with an increase in speed would be immense! I can totally see Mr. Stone from devon corp giving us Kecleonite and telling us to get rid of the one blocking Fortree.

      • What moves I want one ;3;
        Assualt vest
        Shadow sneak
        Fake out
        Sucker punch
        Some filler
That was my set that I made

          • Pls breed me one ;3; I have been searching for so long. I’m also trying to get my hands on a speed boost sharpedo and a unburden swirlix

          • I can breed you one but it won’t have those moves on it since those are tutor moves from gen 5. And I have those two as well.

I’ll get them to ya after I hatch a shiny swablu lol. Been immersing myself in this MM.

          • I don’t care about those moves :3 fake out+shadow sneak+sucker punch is such a troll set and with assualt vest that spc def will be out of the roof

  2. I’ve written my “realistic” comment earlier.

So this one will be the opposite. The crazy unexpected interesting shit that’s even more implausible than anything anyone else has suggested so far and is definitely not gonna happen. 8D

So, as evident from the new box covers of ORAS, Groudon and Kyogre get fancy new powered up formes of some kind. Logically they’ll be called Omega Groudon and Alpha Kyogre.

Here’s where I had an idea.
What if “Mega-evolutions” are just one kind of “pseudo-evolutions”, and MORE KINDS are coming, each with underlying themes that fit whatever game they are released in?

What I mean is, maybe in ORAS, instead of Mega evolutions (simply overdesigned powerful versions) for a bunch of old Pokemon, ORAS could introduce Alpha and Omega evolutions! Similar mechanic, but with Water/Aqua and Land/Magma themes.

Example list of straightforward candidates to demonstrate the concept:
    -Alpha Ludicolo
    -Omega Shiftry
    -Omega Golem
    -Alpha Wailord
    -Alpha Sharpedo
    -Omega Camerupt
    -Omega Machamp
    -Omega Flygon
    -Omega Claydol
    -Alpha Milotic
    -Alpha Kingdra
    -Alpha Walrein
    -Omega Metagross
    -…

These kind of evolution could add their own gimmick, since this is Hoenn we are talking about, summoning a specific kind of weather upon Alpha/Omega-evolution would be a fitting one in this case, to further differentiate them from plain mega-evolutions (oh my god, Omega Shiftry keeping Chlorophyll while summoning the sun and boosting its stats??..wait Alpha Kingdra, OSHITRUN). Of course Omega Flygon would summon Sandstorm and Alpha Walrein Hail etc… And have them be version exclusive to add another interesting emphasis on version differences.

And similar to Charizard and Mewtwo gaining different Megas for X and Y, Rayquaza would be one of perhaps a few Pokémon getting both, an Omega and an Alpha evolution, depending on the version you’re playing.

    Crazy enough?

But lets take this train of thought beyond ORAS ;D

Gamefreak could use this concept for introducing new “pseudo evos” with every set of games from now on, while always keeping it fresh with some underlying theme to fit the game.

When we revisit Unova for example, to go along with their themes of past and future, there could be Paleo and Neo evolutions in Pkmn Neo Black and Pkmn Paleo White
Neo Bisharp, Paleo Golurk, Paleo Mandibuzz, Neo Braviary, Paleo Beheeyem, Neo Klinklang, Paleo Reuniclus, Neo Gothitelle…not to forget, Paleo Reshiram and Neo Zekrom.

    For Sinnoh probably something space-themed.
    Perhaps “Galactic”…or “Cosmic”…”Astro evolutions”?
Astro Dialga, Astro Palkia, Astro Giratina
Astro Clefable, Astro Bronzong, Astro Slowking, Astro Dragonite, Astro Mismagius, Astro Sigilyph…

And even more intriguing concepts for completely new generations.
Solar, Lunar and Stellar evolutions. (Solar Magmortar and Electivire, Lunar Glsicor and Weavile..)
Power and Speed evolutions. (Speed Pidgeot/Power Staraptor…)
Corrupted evolutions adding Poison and Dark types..
And sometimes more generic Mega evolutions along the ride.
    Etc.

    • It’s too complex. You have to remember, even if a bunch of teens & young adults play Pokemon, that their target demographic is kids. Introducing a new mechanic (Mega evolution) and then introducing another new mechanic mid-generation will confuse the players.

They’ll bring new mega evolutions in ORAS. All signs point towards it no matter how people deny it. The only thing I expect them to possibly change is the subtitles for a few stones. Like… Let’s say if Blaziken was to get two mega’s, one will be called Mega Blaziken Alpha, and the other, Mega Blaziken Omega, just like how XY had Mega Charizard X/Y.
