Dae asks: Did you buy a 3DS for Pokémon?

I still remember the first year the 3DS launched. It was one rough year, with barely any worthwhile games released for the system. After half a year a massive price cut was issued and people thought Nintendo were doomed forever. Nintendo put all their effort in making the 3DS the success it should have been. After a lukewarm 2012 Nintendo tried to hit back with big hits in 2013, one of those being Pokémon X & Y.

People were saying for over two years that they would never the failure that is 3DS, but the tides seem to have turned looking back at the recent hardware sales. Now I ask you: did Pokémon pull you over? Or did you already have a 3DS well before Pokémon was even announced? Or were it multiple games that made you buy it but Pokémon was the decisive factor? Tell me all about it in the comments!

I’m currently busy with PJNM, so my review got put on hold but I’ll try to make sure it hits the coming week! Until then!

  1. All this talk of the 3DS and the Eshop has really made me wish for the original RBY and GSC games to be made available on EShop. No brainer that they would sell faster than half the titles available to buy physically.

    • Agreed! However I would enjoy playing a remake of those games… But something tells me that there will be a new region because there are so many hints in the game and in the pokemon x and y guidebook it says that there will be a new region with a lot more berries.

      • Of Course but i don’t want a remake of them until a remake of the games after them have been made…. but having the original ones available for nostalgic purposes playable on the 3DS would be amazing.

          • But really i don’t see why it should never happen… the games would clearly sell well so you never know. Perhaps we may get a Year of Pokemon (maybe for the 20th anniversary in 2016) that will include a re-release of several older games to these consoles.

          • Oh god yes! That needs to happen! By then the Wii U will be 3 to 4 years old, getting near the end of its life cycle (strange to think about, I know). I’m sure all the games being released in the near future will set them up for selling millions more consoles (Smash Bros. incoming) and then they will start bringing in new classics.

        • don’t even mention sonic…. I miss the good games so much… -_-; sonic adventure 1, 2, heroes, and the storyline for ’06 (not the gameplay, keep that s*it away!) were the good ol’ days for our little hedgehog!

          • This was between Adventure 2 and ’06. It was a GBA sonic fighting game that was AMAZING. One of the best hidden Sonic gems out there. But yeah I F**king love Adventure 2, one of my first Sonic games and one of my first Gamecube games.

          • they keep giving us crap. I men the new sonic is either a reskin of older sonic games (which I personally don’t want) or “hold boost and jump every once in awhile” which is total crap, sheer laziness, and boring beyond belief. in the adventure era (and ’06 if you werent being terrorized by… well, ’06) you felt good, and even stylish getting through a level. it was a blast!

          • Yeah, I see what you’re saying. I just want a true Adventure 3 (I know ’06 was supposed to be Adventure 3, but it does not count.)

          • and city escape is easily one of the best level designs in gaming history. the song to! “Rolling around at the speed of sound!” speaking of, what happened to crush 40? (yes I know that’s a ted poley and tony harnell song) are they replaced by cashcash? sega, you made a terrible mistake! crush 40 is my favorite band of all time! 🙁

  2. I’m torn…. I think I might want a spinner, but equally, I’d have to remove one of my current team, which works really well atm and doesn’t need changing… Mega Gardevoir hasn’t done anything special for me and is actually frightfully weak to Pangoro’s Crunch (can even resist two), so I’m considering replacing her. I#d need a Spinner that resists Fighting types and is reasonably good vs Dragons though. Is Starmie an option? Also this does leave my team without a Mega, which I don’t technically need but would be useful to me.

Starmie is good, actually. Rapid Spin, Psychic and Dazzling Gleam if I want it, plus other options like Surf, Ice Beam or Thunderbolt. Bit frail though, but quick.

    • Starmie is one of the best spinners in the game, no contest. So if you dont already have a water or psychic type then Starmie would work well, Tentacruel is also a valid option.

      • I already have Greninja, but he’s Protean, so he doesn’t really have a type. He could be Ice, he could be Water, he could be Dark. Nobody knows.. (he could also be Bug but considering the Bug move is U-turn, there’s no attacking him after it). I do have a Psychic in Gardevoir, but Starmie is most likely going to replace her.

  4. I received a 3DS for Christmas two years ago because I wanted to upgrade and try out new mechanics. I had rarely played it, with LoZ: OT, SMT: DS: O, and Cartoon Network’s Punch Time Explosion (CN version of SSBB). I enjoyed all the games, but I wanted to keep my 3DS clean and brand-newish. But when… THE announcement came on, I know I wouldn’t let a day go by without playing X when it came out. Now my battery runs red everyday. lol

  5. Okay then, since everyone’s talking about other games besides Pokemon, what are your favorite games to play (other than the obvious answer of Pokemon)?

  7. I swear if I encounter one more Baron or Baroness, I WILL issue a Black Writ of Challenge, even if the Pokemon I’m training are around level 45. XD

  8. Answer to Dae’s Question:
Surprisingly, no, I actually bought my 3DS XL for two reasons.
    1) Well, it is XL, and I wear glasses, rather not fuck up my eyes even more with a midget-ass 3DS.
    2) The epic Mario games. Basically got it for games like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, until Pokemon X and Y got announced and the hype began increasing even more. I bought it in August 2012 on a trip to Orlando, Florida (gift from my parents) and since then, my Blue 3DS XL has been AWESOME! 😀

  9. Current team is Mienshao/Greninja/Aegislash/Starmie/Gliscor/Goodra. Team can’t face Rotom-W easily and Trick Room messes with it (it’s very speed orientated, it’s only really Aegislash who can actually take advantage of a Trick Room, and maybe Goodra to a degree), but it’s been holding up pretty well on Showdown.
