JungleTalk: Preparing for the Pokémon Game Show

Right now it’s 10:50PM, Japan Standard Time. I’m typing this up before I take a bath and go to sleep so I can get some rest before teaching a bunch of kids tomorrow at summer school. And after Friday ends… we’ll have new information from Saturday and Sunday’s “Pokémon Game Show”.  The first day the site will be monitoring closely any news and break any new information to English-speaking fans. We’ve got NL and Kriff manning the translation booth and they continue to produce some of the highest quality translations in the Pokémon fandom. Hopefully some Japanese fans will post pictures.

On the second day (Sunday), I’ll be going myself to cover the event. I don’t anticipate digging up any exclusive information, it will probably all be spilled by Saturday, but I will be able to take pictures and give you a write up that gives you a little insight into what the event was like 🙂

For now, let’s take a quick look at what we might get based on past precedents.

PGS Expectations:

  • Mega Evolutions featured in the demo. This was already confirmed by the Official Nintendo Magazine.
  • New Pokémon! This was seen back when Black & White were first demoed, as well as Diamond and Pearl! (Fun fact: I played the demo for the 4th Gen in a gaming shop near my school in Osaka. Was fun to play with Roserade.)
  • New merchandise. We don’t focus on it much, but there’ll probably be some cool stuff there for PGS-goers.
  • …and more! No doubt the very first Pokémon Game Show will pack a few surprises for us 🙂

  1. Every one is waiting on more info for the Mega Pokemon, and I’m just sitting here waiting for the evolutions and typings of the starters. (Hopefully, Grass/Dark, Fire/Psychic, and Water/Fighting!)

  4. So what are you planning to nickname your Gen. 6 pokemon? (That is, if you plan to nickname at all)

    So far, I’m only going to nickname Helioptile Zarsoleil. It’s from the French words for lizard and sun. Thanks to Rhoserade over at the forums for the name idea!

      • It is either one of those two dual types. I am hoping for grass/ghost, because we need it, ha ha. And I do like looking at the official artwork, so we can see every detail we might have missed from leaks

        • Yea. I liked the pose that MegaKangaskan did with its child! That was epic! I want it to be Grass/Ghost because we haven’t had a Pokemon with that typing. Yet, judging by it’s looks, I think it will be Grass/Dark! If its Grass/Dark, now Shiftry has a new friend.

          • So, after seeing Oorotto, I think that there is a possibility he might have a Mega-Evolution or a pre-evolution. I would love a cute cuddly tree in my party who then evovle’s into ferocious Oorotto.

          • OMG. I forgot about Cacturn! Hopefully Chespin does become Grass/Dark. (Fennekin hopefully becomes Fire/Psychic and Froakie becomes Water/Fighting).

          • I am excited to hear about the ability ‘Parental Bond’ in more detail. and I fangirled when the baby came out of the pouch. I was not expecting that for mega but i like it.

    • Yeah BUT You know how GF likes to take up New Slots with “Old” information, meaning if they focus on those 2, which they likely will.. instead of adding 2 more to the amount of Pokémon they were already going to show, they will simply just leave 2 behind for later =/

      • but it is also likely they will reveal more than two. I rather they reveal mega kangaskan and oorotto first since they have been revealed already but not officially.

        • No im saying if they plan of showing 5 new pokes, 2 of them will be those two, instead of showing 5 completely new pokes then those 2 making it 7 in all like everyone would prefer

          • oh okay i see what you mean, should have read your comment carefully. i guess when you put it that way it will be a bit disappointing. but revealing at least one new pokemon is good enough for me and some more gameplay would be nice too.

  9. what pokemon type do you think korrina will use? and please don’t say mega pokemon cause you can only have one of them on your team

    • I’m sorry but she most likely uses one because knows the secret to them and it would be weird for them not to give her a Mega Pokemon. She would probably use Mega Blaziken. Her type is pretty much confirmed through her badge :p (Fighting)

      • Remember MegaBlaziken could not be obtained in game. How would she get it. Also, that would be a bit hard. MegaBlaziken has Speed Boost. I don’t think she would use one. It might be another Mega Pokemon. Maybe MegaLucario?

          • But how would she get the MegaStone? It’s event only. It cannot be found in game. So, MegaLucario would make more sense if she had a Mega Pokemon!

          • The MegaStone cannot be found in game. It would make more sense for her to have MegaLucario! How could see get a item that is not obtainable in-game.

          • But the Mega Stone is still IN the game, data-wise, just, WE cannot get it outside of an Event. Zoroark and Zorua was Event only in Black and White, yet N managed to get his hands on one for the final battle. However, I don’t think it would be Mega Blaziken, just because, if she’s the fighting Gym Leader, and the 4th Gym leader, I doubt her levels would be in the late 30s.

            Worth noting this is excluding the possibility they may in fact have items now as actual DLC, so they aren’t in the game data until added via an event, potentially to prevent people for hacking for them or the like. But I kinda doubt that.

          • The Megastones are found in game- they’re just extremely hard to find. The Bazikenite, however, is an event-only Megastone.

          • Yes I know. This was about a Gym Leader using Mega Blaziken possibly, and that the fact that Blazikenite is event-only really has no bearing on that. Though, once again, I do kind of doubt she’d use Mega Blaziken anyways, just because I don’t’ think her levels would be high enough.

            And before anyone suggests it, Thief no longer permanently steals a trainer’s item, so trying to steal and ‘farm’ Megastones from anyone who may use them in game wouldn’t work. Not to mention, it may work like the Griseous orb attached to Giratina, so it literally may not be able to be stolen period.

      • i guess i could be fighting but i do believe she is royalty cause of how she addresses her self as ‘lady korrina’ and her name means maiden i don’t know if that had anything to do with her type

        • I have a feeling this “Lady Korrina” was an attempt to translate the nuance of “Sama” when referring to herself, to make her sound spicy and full of herself. Naturally it can lead to misunderstandings when it’s translated this way, but it’s kind of unavoidable.

      • The better reasoning would be because Blaziken is an evolved starter and you rarely see starters outside of their given games, and even more rarely as part of a gym leader’s set. However, Lucario was Maylene’s “signature” pokemon, it would be strange to see it reused to be another trainer’s signature pokemon.

    • I remember that someone pointed out that her helmet looked like a Meinshao, so I thought that might be her signature pokemon. However, given that she is the one to tell you about Megaevolutions it does seen likely that she’ll have one on her team.

  10. I hope Pokemon shows off the starter evolutions at the Pokemon Game Show. Just as a little surprise to people who came! I think it’s time they showed the starter evolutions! The release date of X & Y is coming up soon, so people could start deciding the starter they want to choose. If they don’t show it at the Game Show, then hopefully they will be seen in the Next CoroCoro. I really want to see the starter evos. 😀

  13. I actually want to see how customization works in Pokemon X and Y. Would your character hold the change item as you flip through the list, or would it spontaneously appear on the body as you choose your clothing?

    • Probably the battles will get more realistic: actual sleep and fainting animations, and Pokemon actually punching their enemy instead of just show a punch animation.

    • Graphics can always improve.. like a Pokémon game on PS4 would look awesome… But I Really Love the Cell Shading because it makes it look Just like the anime. The new Kingdom Hearts game will keep its more childish look and not super realistic just HD… that’s a good example
      But I feel 3D MUST Always be apart of main Pokémon games now.. If they don’t it will always feel like a step back… 3D add density and realness

      • I want an moose, wolf(ice-type), llama, peacock, and echidna.

        I’d also really like a blue sea slug, but I doubt we’ll ever get one of those. :/

        • Yes, a wolf is almost necessary. I would like to see a llama for the ola ke ase jokes 😛 but with gogoat i don’t think there will be one at least this generation.

        • Is East Shellos not enough for you? It’s a blue nudibranch, so essentially a blue sea slug. Or are you talking G. atlanticus? I usually hear it called sea swallow or blue dragon in common names.

          Technically, Manaphy and Phione are also blue nudibranchs, I suppose, if they’re intended to be sea angels. Granted, I also think cyndaquil is intended to be an echidna.

          …I had a silly idea for a steel/normal or simply steel alpaca with “steel wool” a while back that I illustrated.

          I want something like a binturong. Or any sort of vivverid. Also maybe a coati. Even if it’s like a pig/coati hybrid or something.

          • Yes, I meant the G. Atlanticus. I think it’s an amazing creature. It’s cute, amazing, and it doesn’t look real! It would definitely fit in in the world of pokemon. 😉

    • Apart from the great ones stated by others, I would love a hummingbird, a baboon, a killer whale , a woodpecker, an armadillo, a lemur, a newt, a pumpkin, a clownfish… I would also love the fossils to be a primitive fish/ placoderm line and a primitive amphibian line.

        • I must admit I struggle to find the armadillo in armaldo. Isn’t he just a badass anomalocaris (i adore gamefreak’s choice to use few dinosaurs and lots of semi-obscure creatures as fossils).
          Edit: I forgot the name. It’s badly misleading actually.

      • I’ve been hoping for a pure-flying hummingbird foreeever.

        Could just have a tiktaalik and cross off both primitive fish and primitive amphibian.

        I feel a placoderm would read a little too similar to relicanth (being a coelacanth) for most people to get what it’s supposed to be, sadly. I love primitive mammals, and I’d love something like an andrewsarchus personally. Or a giant sloth, chalicothere, or sivatherium. Basically ancient mammals were super crazy and super awesome.

        Edit: Also, depending on how you take sandshrew, it could be an armadillo. Sandslash is definitely a pangolin, but sandshrew is pretty armadillo-y.

        • A giant sloth would make a perfect split evo for vigoroth!
          Also, remember that apart from gen 4, game freak usually go for creatures famous in paleontology but otherwise obscure… I used to dream of pokemon based on archelon and archaeopteryx, but I never imagined we would get any! So don’t lose hope for fossils like tiktaalik or dunkleosteus! Fossil mammals are really cool, and the main reason I want an armadillo is for it to evolve into a glyptodont! Another series of fossils should be based on permian reptiles like a dimetrodon or a gorgonopsid! Your mammal ideas are awesome, I think pokemon should feature megafauna In general such as megalodon or megalania. Actually, I did think of a fish/ amphibian line, but I thought an icthyostega/ koolasuchus line and a pteraspis/ dunkleosteus line would just be cooler ;).

  18. I sure hope they can get the effectiveness of Fairy-types out of the way. That had me anxious for month since the 18th type’s reveal. It would really suck if I cannot go wild with Fighting-types against Jigglypuff or Clefairy anymore. I would appreciate it if they give me the chance to smash a Sylveon with Pangoro’s Hammer Arm in one blow.

  19. I haven’t been on in a while, but I need to ask the public some things:
    1. Any word from Hiro’s leaks?
    2. How credible do you think Pokebeach’s source is at this point?
    3. What do you all think will be showcased at Gamescom and the Pokemon Game Show as opposed to what you want to see showcased?
    4. What Pokemon do you all expect to see revealed soon? *cough Orotto cough*
    5. How do you think Pokemon X and Y will be overall, as a game? (the following questions clarify the point of Question 5, and they are just examples) What do you want to see for the starter evolutions? The flow of the game? Team Flare? The Gym Leaders and E4? The storyline? Another region involved? Mega Pokemon?

      • Well, to be fair it’s hard to argue against the fact that everything he has leaked has always been true. I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that more stuff from him will be true too.
        Though I do believe he’s only the second hand source of the real leaker, after doing a little research a while back :p

    • 1. Hiro rumored a Scizor Mega Evolution.
      2. WPM’s source is the most credible rumor up to this point. No point in it has been disproved, while a lot of them have been officially confirmed.
      3. A couple of Pokemon, probably including Oorotto. Some coverage on already revealed Mega Pokemon.
      4. Well yes, Oorotto. And maybe that Kangaskhan Mega Evolution.
      5. Fennekin’s final evo with decent sweeping prowess and a new unique ability. I hope the gym leaders could be based on something else other than the type. We know the game size and it’s probably not going to have another region (I wouldn’t mind visiting hoenn only). The Mega thing is fine by me, but I hope there is a common ground on which they evolve, because buffing random mons really irks me.

    • 1: Apparently there’ll be a Mega Scizor.
      2: Extremely. All one needs is to look at Pangoro, Inkay, Malamar, the Fairy-type, Swirlix’s Draining Kiss move, Dragon’s weakness to Fairy… Need I continue? The Pokebeach leaks called all that and more, right down to the Inkay line and Pangoro’s type combinations. And based on Inkay and Malamar’s designs, I can totally see the whole “level it up while the 3DS is upside down to evolve it” thing being true. Basically, anyone who doubts that leak at this point is only kidding themselves.
      3: A few new Pokémon, which may or may not include Orotto, and a new Mega Evolution or two.
      4: Orotto, plus this generation’s Rattata equivalent (unless that turns out to be Bunnelby’s role).
      5: Overall, I could see them easily being the best Pokémon games yet, in terms of graphics at the very least. Storyline, too, though B/W’s storyline is a tough act to follow.
      5a: For Chespin, I’d like to see something built kinda like a Sandslash/Sceptile fusion with Chespin’s overall color scheme, y’know? Built more like Sandslash for the middle evolution, and more like Sceptile for the final evolution. For Fennekin, I can see the middle evolution being built like Ninetales, and the final evolution being built like Zoroark. And for Froakie… not entirely sure what I’d like to see for that.

    • It’s actually a recreation (an accurate one). Some parts may be off because he gathers the music from the trailers. I am in LOVE with the wild battle music!

    • The Gym Leader music is amazing, but I think it should be sped up a bit.

      I can not express how disgusted I am with the Mega Pokemon music- I just have no words. 🙁

    • I hate to say it but they suck in comparison to the wild and trainer themes. The Gym leader theme is decent enough but far too relaxed for me it should be much faster paced to get the adrenaline going during a gym fight. Don’t even get me started on the Mega Pokemon music if that is in my game it’s getting muted every time I’m sorry but it’s so awful and not Pokemon-ish if that makes sense…

    • I’ve really liked his recreated music so far, but if that’s the Gym Leader theme it’s really disappointing. I hope it’s for the Gym Trainers, not the Gym Leaders.

  22. Apparently someone got the game and was around Santalune forest and posted the Pokedex up to number 37! (Take this all with a grain of salt) Pikachu is number #36 in the Central Kalos dex (confirmed by Pokemon Smash) and he/she also revealed the Kalos dex up to number 37! They erased it so there is no link but some people say that their antivirus was going crazy.
