Pokémon Fans Should be First to Denounce Logan Paul

By now many of you have probably heard about the corpse that “YouTube personality” Logan Paul (and crew) found, filmed and subsequently mocked in Japan. It was a terrible moment for social media and anyone who uses it because of how plainly it exposed the vapid and narcissistic depths to which it can sink and how far some people will go to attract viewers.

What you may be less familiar with is that during his time in Japan Logan Paul continued his antics with a video of playing “real-life Pokémon GO” on the streets of Tokyo. I won’t link directly to the video (if you watch it please do so on a mirror to deprive him of the views), but he harasses hapless Japanese passerbys in various ways. Walking into a sushi bar he throws the plush Pokéball at an unamused chef, runs into traffic dressed as Pokémon characters and even tries to get a rise out of a police officer.

This has now gained traction in various Japanese outlets and while the general understanding seems to be that he is a crazy YouTuber, it was not a good impression of Westerners—and certainly not for those of us who actually like the Pokémon franchise. If you want to visit Japan in the future (and I recommend it, great country!) it is particularly important that Japanese people see us as generally respectful and willing to learn. Therefore I think we all have a small duty to pushback online against this sort of repugnant behavior.

We should recognize as a fandom that this sort of behavior is not acceptable and anyone masquerading around in Pokémon costumes and harassing people is not something the Pokémon community condones. And that stand whether or not it’s Logan Paul. If you want to take action there’s a petition to get him removed from YouTube as well.

  4. If Pokemon Switch is one game rather than two, do you expect them to stick to one Pokemon per cover or do you think they’ll switch it up a bit?

    I personally hope they’ll switch it up, most Pokemon box arts look kinda boring because its just one Pokemon on the cover on a different background. And most of the time it’s literally their Sugimori art, not even a dynamic pose or anything that looks far more appealing.

    • They’ll just make the background more vivid or just the map of the region and call it a day. But yeah, they could pull a SMD and have a ton of Pkm in the cover and the main legend in the background really. But knowing GF I feel kinda doubtful that they would change the cover art

    • this is an interesting thing to think about. i guess i didnt think about with switch games being more expensive would that lead to an end to the split. but now it makes me wonder, what will they do about completing a new dex for example. will they just make all pokemon available in one game?

    • If they do just one version then I could see them do a more artistic cover. Still with maybe a single Pokemon or maybe 2 as the main pieces, but it’s possible they add more in the background and maybe even put a landscape in there.

  11. I guess it’s true what they say. There’s no such thing as bad publicity. Before this whole fiasco I didn’t even know this guy existed…
    Imagine how much money he must be making just from curious people looking around his content.

    Personally I don’t wish anything negative on him, but can only hope he uses this situation as a learning curve to become a better person. Probably unlikely but it’s better that a person with his kind of influence does something good rather than fading into obscurity…

    Just my 2 cents.

    • My thoughts near exactly tbh. He’s not malicious, he’s ignorant. He doesn’t need something bad to happen to him, he needs to wise up realise what he’s done and move on to do better things.

      • honestly i disagree. I dont think someone who did somethng this stupid should have a platform at all. his audience is too young for him to be putting out so much stupid content. But maybe this was a way to get away from that audience. Then you have his brother who continues to do stupid things. they should not be whatever the influence they are

      • That’s why you take (good) corrective action, give him a reason so he knows to wise up and move on. This ‘apology’ video hardly will do that. And especially let it rest for a while, if he just goes on to do the same thing next month it hardly was the right action at all. I don’t want him dead lol.

        • it wasnt even an apology for what he did. it was an apology for how the viewers responded to it. but as many people have already expressed, nothing will happen. YT doesnt care because they believe the BS that it was suicide prevention, which to me seems extremely inappropriate and disrespectful to people who really want the help. They responded to people complaining by saying something like “we work with groups like suicide prevention….” once someone else messes up, he will be out of the spotlight. thats just how it works.

  19. My Woobat will never evolve. It keeps getting knocked out by weirdly strong Pokemon that shouldn’t be hurting it this much. I’m gonna have to pump it full of vitamins if I want it to evolve at a reasonable time

  23. I really can’t wait for BW to get remade. I’m pretty excited to see what they can do with the region in full 3d. Playing through Black has been great so far (even tho I’m only at Castelia).

      • Or later honestly haha It’ll be worth the wait tho. BW are just very quality games. Aside from the story they’re just fun to play. Plus they introduce a bunch of quality of life features that are a must have for the series now like the ability to use TMs multiple times
