Pokémon Fans Should be First to Denounce Logan Paul

By now many of you have probably heard about the corpse that “YouTube personality” Logan Paul (and crew) found, filmed and subsequently mocked in Japan. It was a terrible moment for social media and anyone who uses it because of how plainly it exposed the vapid and narcissistic depths to which it can sink and how far some people will go to attract viewers.

What you may be less familiar with is that during his time in Japan Logan Paul continued his antics with a video of playing “real-life Pokémon GO” on the streets of Tokyo. I won’t link directly to the video (if you watch it please do so on a mirror to deprive him of the views), but he harasses hapless Japanese passerbys in various ways. Walking into a sushi bar he throws the plush Pokéball at an unamused chef, runs into traffic dressed as Pokémon characters and even tries to get a rise out of a police officer.

This has now gained traction in various Japanese outlets and while the general understanding seems to be that he is a crazy YouTuber, it was not a good impression of Westerners—and certainly not for those of us who actually like the Pokémon franchise. If you want to visit Japan in the future (and I recommend it, great country!) it is particularly important that Japanese people see us as generally respectful and willing to learn. Therefore I think we all have a small duty to pushback online against this sort of repugnant behavior.

We should recognize as a fandom that this sort of behavior is not acceptable and anyone masquerading around in Pokémon costumes and harassing people is not something the Pokémon community condones. And that stand whether or not it’s Logan Paul. If you want to take action there’s a petition to get him removed from YouTube as well.

Here’s to making 2018 a better year.

    • Because children and those with a child like mentality like loud nonsensical things. It’s really sad that YouTube supports this kind of disgusting behavior more so the lack of parents watching the content that their children consume online. Like you can’t just give them an iPad and call it a day you have to be more proactive.

  1. Logan Paul is partially fake, partially ahole and everything he does it just to gain clicks/views/subs/money, like almost all big Youtubers out there, he doesn’t actually care about you as long as you make him. Don’t support this type of personalities, and watch the actual content creators on Youtube that put lots of effort themselves in their videos and that don’t have a million dollar production house behind them!

    • Okay, as someone Who watches many youtubers, luckily most of the Big youtubers are much better than the Pauls. For sure not perfect, but they aren’t that bad.

        • Well Pewdiepie and Boogie aren’t bad and Fine Bros are better than most Reaction channels. Verlisify is the only actually bad one on the list and he isn’t even Big.

          Reply
          • Meanwhile, the Fine Bros tried to trademark ‘reaction videos’ and sued many people doing similar stuff, they took a step back when they got a lot of heat for that though.

          • And Pewdiepie has a history of saying bad stuff on cam, which isn’t the real issue, but more how he handled the response, which didn’t show a good side of him tbh.

          • What? Did you see his apology video? He looked like he really regrets those mistakes. And you have to admit, he got scr*wed over by news outlets (but not really by other youtubers like Logan Paul).

          • His apology video was the worst one, since like I said, he again played the victim card and he didn’t get screwed by news outlet, he got repercussions for actions he did in the past. Kinda like if I screw up on the job and made the company look really bad, my employer has a good reason to take sanctions against me.

          • I mean, when you Compare it to Paul’s apology it’s not that bad. And he got scr*wed over. When you watch him for a while you can see that the news outlets were really overreacting. He did something awful few times, but what they wrote it isn’t representive of what he usually makes.

          • I think that’s the actual problem: because he has reached this celebrity status, it somehow shields him from the consequences of the stuff he does and would diminish every bad thing he says (not to mention his userbase consists of lots of kids who have trouble completely understanding this action->consequence dynamic).. News outlets were completely in their right by dropping him from a business view (like they can do with everyone they sponsor), this stuff happens a lot in sports too, people get lots of dropped sponsorships after stuff they’ve done.

          • The popularity makes what he did worse, tho it’s not like his viewers are kids that have him as their role model. But it also makes the consequences much much bigger. If he had 50k subs nobody would care. Yes, if he wasn’t popular people wouldn’t defend him that much, but if he wasn’t popular there wouldn’t be anything to defend him from.

  2. I don’t like Logan Paul, and I know I’m far from the only one, but that dead body video and him just generally being an asshole is not enough of a reason to kick him off YouTube. Let him get banned by getting strikes like the rest of us instead of petitioning it (which almost definitely won’t work in the first place). It sets a dangerous precedent that if we don’t like someone, we can petition and rant about them to get them off the platform.

This is the whole basis for democratic election of leaders…

      • 1. That has nothing to do with this.
        2. This has more in common with Hillary Clinton supporters making a petition for the Electoral College to elect her instead of Trump than an actual vote for whether or not he should be off the platform.

        Reply
        • The petition itself holds no legal basis, but this is making clear to Youtube that they need to think about they need to handle such behaviour on their website. They are clearly lacking on that part, and the platform has become a prime support for people making a quick buck by targetting other users or spreading false information.
Nobody is actually saying they need to remove him for reaching X petitions, but if you don’t like something, make your voice heard.

          • “Nobody is actually saying they need to remove him for reaching X petitions”, is different from “Nobody is saying they need to remove him”. This is clearly making your voice heard and putting the ball in Youtube’s park. What other action do you expect them to? “Yeah Youtube, uhh you wanna let Logan sit in a corner for an hour and after that he can go play again, OK. Be nice to him, ok bb.”
This not setting a predecent that they need to remove everyone who reaches a certain amount of votes, but it is making clear that this behaviour should not be tolerated.

          • No it’s setting a precedent that YouTube should listen to people making petitions to get rid of YouTubers they disagree with. I never said anything about having a certain amount of signatures or petitions.

    • Essentially I agree, but as a YouTube ambassador of sorts (with his own YouTube RED series) I think that this should have made the platform look bad enough that YT should have stepped in. I’m not personally for just getting rid of people I disagree with in general.

  3. Ugh, typical coming from one of the Paul brothers really, always acting acting so obnoxious and annoying creating a bad image for youtubers ( and now for americans and tourists who visits Japan) yet Youtube somehow supports his channel whether making them appear prominently on a Rewind or not taking down or even age restrict his suicide video forest after they manually reviewed his channel; and I assume it’s because they get a lot of views.

But anyways, as long as he still gets endless support from his fangirls (they always support him no matter what messed thing he does I swear) and Youtube to a certain degree, he’ll still act like that, so hopefully YT does something in the matter.

    • As long as he earns money, so does Youtube. YTB will only step in when they risk tarnishing their brand image, thus losing (making less) money.

  4. For example, Boogie has taken up for The Quartering (twitter.com/TheQuartering) a guy who got angry at the creators of Magic TCG because ‘they depict too much women in the game while we know women can’t play Magic’ and who was banned for life from the game after years long evidence of harassment of other Magiccers and is now on a crusade due to the ban. His Twitter should show you how toxic this stuff is.

  5. That’s an overreaction, especially from someone that doesn’t watch him. It’s the same problem that Pewdiepie has gone through. They both did some absolutely sh*tty stuff and people who don’t watch them judge them just on the bad things. The diffrence between them and someone like Logan Paul is that you can see they aren’t really bad people, they just make mistakes and honestly regret them. (I have to admit I’m talking mostly about Pewdiepie here, I don’t watch Boogie that much, tho I know people that do).

    Reply
    • Well, PDP isn’t as bad as Boogie, but go watch recent events/Twitter of Boogie. He’s really not a “nice guy that has done some shitty things”, he’s the dude that plays the victim card whenever he has targeted someone else (psychological projection). He was banned on NeoGAF due to that, and I know the admin who banned him, the stories he told of him in private conversations…

      Reply
      • Well not saying that you’re wrong but I think you’re basing your opinion on him just on the sh*tty stuff. And honestly, I have a feeling the Admin who banned him would show him in a bad light on purpose.

        Reply
        • Well, if he has clearly done shitty stuff and continues on doing so, does that not make him shitty even though he has done a few good things? Everyone does good and bad things, but there’s somewhere that a line needs to be drawn where you can’t accept more of the bad stuff.
And the admin is a really cool guy, he has no reason to just ban people for doing nothing wrong, and why would he show him in a bad light on purpose? He gets banned for the stuff he does, he doesn’t do stuff for getting banned.

          Reply
          • I mean, if the Admin had good reasons to ban him, he’d probably tell others just the bad things he did, leaving a bad impression of a person he didn’t get to know well.

          • If you make a serious traffic violation, doesn’t that give the judge the right to take actions concerning your driving license? It doesn’t matter if he’s a good person or not for other things, what matters is that you can and should take action concerning a person’s bad behaviour. If that behaviour is through making Youtube videos (or posting on a video game forum or twitter), you should be able to take action against those.

          • I mean, it’s totally fine that the Admin banned him, I’m just saying that could leave a wrong picture of him in the admin’s mind.

  6. Wow,he really makes Westerners/foreigners look terrible. I hope the people there understand only he’s the idiot. But what can you do? Youtube is makiing money off him, He’s making money off it. There’s no way to stop it

  7. Soooooooooo sick of seeing this scumbags face on the internet. Had no idea who was before all this and now I wish it had stayed that way……..it doesn’t matter where you’re from, who you are, or what country you visit. Nothing excuses the behavior he exhibited and I’m disgusted……

  8. Never heard of them. Often I see people that are so inconsiderate, disrespectful of others, unkind and selfish, I’m so sick of it. There’s no excuse for this behaviour from whoever this is and they should’ve been arrested and cautioned/fined. It’s not funny and paints a distorted and largely incorrect picture of those they, knowingly or otherwise, represent (Westerners, Pokemon Fans etc). I certainly won’t be watching anything this ignorant moron does, they deserve to be punished and I hope they get their comeuppance sooner rather than later, before they influence others and cause further harm.

  9. And if i may speak freely similar to wolf boy any negative views or outright hostility be it social media or any other format is what he wants, people like them gain their fame by being worse that the worst because infamy and fame are nearly identical, i rather just let them tie their own nooses on their own pace and not fan the flames, with any luck some radical will just do the work for us

  10. I have no tolerance for bigoted “men” like this who expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter, and see others as below them due to their skewed perspective on reality. Logan Paul and his brother Jake are scourge of the Earth and deserve nothing less than to be shunned from the public eye and work at McDonalds for the rest of their lives rather than rolling around in cash, negatively influencing millions of children along the way. This is the objective truth. Now, how about you SMASH that upvote button and get this post to 1,000 upvotes?

  11. Did not know of this until now. This bit of info is not a way to start a morning which is now the afternoon where I am at.

      • No, but it is kind of like that one time when Pokémon had announced a new trailer for SM on a Wednesday morning, and they ended up delaying it to another day last minute. It is the little things that accumulate that make up the day, and I would prefer if there aren’t too many bad little things that I should concern myself with.

        Reply
        • Meh. So many great things you need to focus on though! Wouldn’t say my day was very exciting, but I had a nice shower, looked great after that, had some laughs from talking to people, learned new things, ate a really nice croissant, the weather is fair, got my most popular imgur comment et, watched a good soccer match, and in all in it was very relaxing. Don’t fing care what this LP did or if people think I don’t know Bitcoin or that I shouldn’t find furries weird, that won’t screw up my day!

    • Hard to believe that 1 2 Switch is still selling at all, or that SM is still selling that well even with USUM as a choice. Not surprised at USUM selling that well because is still recent and games sell best when they’re relatively new I guess.

    • Just gonna take down my own notes on it

      – Not surprising that there’s no XO games on here, because I knew beforehand Microsoft doesn’t sell to well in Japan.
      – What is surprising is how Yokai Watch doesn’t seem to be selling super, super well. Granted it’s the newest game on that list but it’s not any less surprising. Especially since it was outsold by a game that came early the year before.
      – You can really tell what sorts of games Japan likes. Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, USUM. They love their RPGs. They also love their cute quirky things, like Splatoon and Yokai Watch.
      – Despite how innovative and well received it is, BotW didn’t sell as much as I thought it would. Whereas Odyssey is chilling in the top 5 despite a relatively later release.
      – Japan really freaking loves Pokemon. Like, seriously. SuMo being in the top 10 is insane considering that people knew that there was a ‘better’ version coming for half of the year. Despite that, I know there was outcry in Japan due to USUM.

    • But what if you entertain through hurting other people? As stupid as it sounds, LP himself thinks he probably just entertains everyone too. The goal should be to entertain without crossing the line in hurting other people :).

      • Unfortunately what Dae says is true. There are varying perspectives in this world and something that may appear harmless to the one saying might be quite harmful for another. Now I am pretty sure the general consensus is that Logan Paul was aware of how harmful he was. I am just emphasizing that care must be taken on this medium as misunderstandings can easily occur.

        Reply
        • Yep. And I do think it’s possible to say ‘daring’ things and still be able to entertain people. People fearing that they can’t do anything anymore need to learn when something’s really hurtful or not. Severity and intensity are major contributing factors to that. Borat is an example of a movie that makes many controversial jokes, but if you watch the movie, he makes fun of everyone and you realise not all of it is actually serious (Baron Cohen is a jew himself and the jewish couple they visited were actually very fond of how nicely Baron Cohen treated them). Or how the Fawtly Towers german sketch is acceptable, since not all of Fawtly towers concerns making fun of germans).

  12. So far I’m actually really enjoying playthrough Black again. It’s bringing back a lot of feelings. BW were such a breath of fresh air for me after gen 4. It was also the first game that I actually completed the regional dex ever (I’d ususally get close, but always have a few missing) So far my main team members are My Pansear (My real starter) and Woobat. I also have a Sawk in straining so I can take on Lenora. I’m not sure I’ll keep it on my team, but we shall see. Then in the back I have a Lilipup who I had just in case I needed and extra body that didn’t have a specific weakness. Then finally my Oshawott whom I would have boxed already, but I have cut on him so he’s gotta stick around for at least a little while. Nothing personal with him, but I’ve already used Oshawott so he was never gonna be on the team anyway.
