JungleAsks: What’s your favorite Dog Pokémon?

We’re just days away from 2018 which happens to be a “Year of the Dog” according to the Chinese Zodiac. In Japan, the country of origin for the Pokémon series, there are reminders everywhere as New Years draws near. There are also plenty of dog-like Pokémon now in the series, so many so that it might be hard to just pick one favorite but today we challenge you to do just that! What is your favorite dog (or dog-like) Pokémon?!

From Poochyena to Furfrou, Granbull to Manectric, what’s your favorite Pokémon that resembles a dog from our own world?

Here are some pictures to give you inspiration as you think of your answer! Tell us below!

  1. Dear Nintendo,
I’ve been (mostly) good all year, my new year’s resolution is to game with you for another prosperous year of fun!
I had fun setting skysail and kicking it old school and new style with Mario across the world ( and beyond) in Super Mario Odyssey.
I explored the vast land of Hyrule and took on a mighty quest to smite Calamity Ganon in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
I Defeated the threat to Ferrum, the great and terrifying Shadow Mewtwo, and cleared the final championship Test in Pokken Tournament DX.
I Gave the Splat to the Octolings, saved an oldtime Inkling friend, and freestyled the evil remixing leader in Splatoon 2.
I Knocked out the malicious face of evil, Hedlok and bested the league in ARMS.

Here’s to another good year of victories, accomplishments and fun on the Switch~

  5. So, it’s December 31 2017 and to say it’s been quite a year is a MASSIVE understatement. Ever since the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 on January 12, this beautiful piece of hardware has gripped onto our lives in ways we never thought possible. 135 hours of Breath of the Wild, 45 hours of Super Mario Odyssey and 40 hours of ARMS, amongst others, have made this year a joy to partake in. I’ll forever remember the feeling of picking up my Joy-Con Grip for the first time on March 4 and jumping right into Breath of the Wild, and look forward to sharing those raw emotions with game historians of the future. I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I actually enjoyed ARMS a whole lot more than Splatoon 2 (which was also a blast), and this makes me unbelievably excited because we all know there will be other brand-new IPs with the Nintendo charm in 2018 and beyond.

This year has also been very tough for me because of my grandma passing away on April 26. Some of you may not know what it feels like to go through that situation but ever since then a little piece of my identity has been lost, likely forever, and it sucks. I know Nintendo doesn’t care about me specifically (although I’ve given them thousands of dollars over the years), but they could not have timed this new generation any better. When one door closes another opens, that’s what I believe now.

I also graduated high school this year on June 9, which only happens once in a lifetime! Yet it was tough to really feel happy about it due to the aforementioned situation having a lasting toll on me. I remember this was one of the few times in recent memory that I can truly say I was happy after acknowledging all that I have endured.

I don’t feel like writing too much more, but my main resolution for 2018 is to continue playing the Switch and being enthusiastic about games and technology in general! With all that has happened in 2017, I will try my best to radiate positivity in 2018 regardless of the circumstances of my life. And I’ll still be visiting PokeJungle each and every day 😛

  6. If the decision which one of these games will be better, Pokemon Switch or Metroid Prime 4, was your’s, what would you do

  7. Working on my BOTW section of my essay. While I’m going to cut and summarize alot in the final thing, I wanted to share the section I wrote about BOTW’s soundtrack. Comments and criticisms welcome!
A major criticism of Breath of the Wild is with the soundtrack. The series has always been full of some of the best soundtracks in gaming. So much emotion is tied in with these pieces of music. Hearing the Hyrule Field theme the first time after leaving Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time while being greeted with a bright new world is a feeling that I will never forget. And the music always ties in directly with the games they originate from. Wind Waker’s music fills the mind with dreams of Seafaring Adventure while Skyward Sword’s score swells with sweeping orchestral pieces that feel romantic and comforting reminding you of why you are on your quest. Majora’s Mask however, haunts the player with sound that never gives them the luxury to relax. Like the moon that constantly looms over the people of Termina, even the upbeat melody of Clock Town drowns into a dreadful repetitive song that leaves no hope to the people of this world.
These scores set the player on a journey matching the world they are immersed in. Taking away the music is taking away a piece of the experience as you lose a crucial part of world building. The music is a hugely important tool in the story telling. Breath of the Wild’s hyrule is a land that is torn apart. A melancholy realm where a kingdom that once thrived is left to ruin. Their hero has been dead for one hundred years. The time for a master swordsman to swoop in and save the world is long gone. You aren’t a valiant hero that everyone knows will save the world anymore. You’re an adventurer trying to do right to the world that has little left to offer.
Riding a horse isn’t accompanied by a sweeping hero’s song, but rather a simple, playful tune that gallops along with the horse. As the notes jump, Zelda’s Lullaby quietly rides along, a slow quiet duet that brings little attention to itself. At night, the main theme takes the lullaby’s place.
The world fills itself with small piano flourishes and the sounds of nature. Often times you are left with birds chirping and the wind blowing through the grass. Hyrule itself whispering through nature as it no longer has the strength to make itself known in a loud bellowing roar calling for heros. All it can muster now is a quiet, reflective last sigh of sadness.
Towns and villages are where life is still thriving somewhat and the songs feel more alive and melodic. It shines during the Tarry Town side quest where you are tasked with helping a growing village fine citizens and workers from all corners of the world. When you do, motifs from that race is added to the basic melody such as gorons with loud, obtuse horns, and wind instruments from the Rito. Sections from the themes of their domains fuse together harmonically to create a song full of life signifying another new start for the land.
While the music from Breath of the Wild may not stick with you like music from the rest of the series would, it is the right choice for the world. Themes from other games are laced within the music of BotW to show that even though this melancholy Hyrule is broken, it isn’t completely gone. It blends the struggling land of hyrule with the past and you are the one left to salvage what’s left. All told musically.

  9. So with Animal Crossing Switch inevitably coming, what upgrades to the series do you think they’ll make? New Leaf added town customization, which is pretty huge. I’m thinking:
-Cooking. It is a simulator game after all and it would give us something more to do inside our houses.

-Designing other animals houses. Surely Happy Home Designer wasnt for nothing, right? I think it would be great to totally up the customization aspect of the game. Maybe even get villagers input on what they want for their house.

-Inviting/Evicting villagers. Something that has always bothered me with the series is that there are just those one villagers who won’t get the hell out of your town. Ignoring them for literal weeks on end sometimes just doesn’t do it. Especially given our mayoral powers in new Leaf we can’t get them to leave. Wouldnt it be nice to pick and choose? In NL I constantly had people come to my campsite that i just couldnt invite because my town was full of uglies who wouldnt leave. And going off the campsite invite aspect of NL, I do REALLY like that in pocket camper we can choose who we want at our campsite. No uglies!

-Base character customization! Leaving it up to random questions asked by Rover in the beginning is a no no from me.

-More travelling. The only place to really go in NL was the island, which was nice, but too small. Im thinking a city/metropolitan area like City Folk, but way bigger and more customizable. Maybe even an apartment style living that you can adopt and live in? Maybe in the beginning you choose between developing a town or a city and then at some point in the game you can do the option you didnt choose.

Thoughts? Input? I know I’ve been on about AC too much, but thinking about it has carried me through the past few crummy weeks 😛

    • Probably the ability to have your “town” go through different stages.

Settlement -> Large Settlement -> Miniature Village -> Village -> Expansive Village -> Rural Town -> Suburban Town -> Urban Town -> MegaTown -> City -> Megalopolis -> Ultra Megalopolis -> City State

      Reply
      • That would be kinda cool. Though some people would definitely lament the loss of the small town rural feel animal crossing can have. That’s why I suggested separate towns. But I also think going from rural to urban would change the music and you would lose some themes as it evolves

        Reply
        • I dunno they could make the towns/main area to have different themes so even when its at a maximum point, at an urban city, you could have it look like a rustic city.

      • This is a very, very interesting idea. It goes to show you that Nintendo have only barely scratched the surface of this series, and they have no excuse for not making Animal Crossing Switch as soon as possible. However, I feel like they’d probably have separate the town, city, shopping area, etc. to be upgraded individually, because somebody may like to spend their time surrounded by nature while others would want big buildings around them.

        Reply
        • Yeah but they should also introduce some sort of level-based system, and not have each place be individually upgraded as that’s similar to tons of basic apps.

          Reply
    • I feel more in-door activities would be a nice addition but really Animal Crossing is basically fishing until your pockets are full and selling it to that asshole Tom Nook and making your little world slightly comfier until you either stop playing or get trapped in a house fire

      Reply
      • Maybe to add to the indoor activity part, having furniture that actually does stuff. Like collecting books you can read and putting them in a bookcase? Or keeping ingredients in a pantry or fridge? Phones that let you call villagers and invite them over?

        Reply
          • Yeah the eating part would come with the cooking part. But would that mechanic then make it necessary for us the player to make sure our player is fed? Or would cooking be completely optional and just used for selling and gifting to villagers?

    • Possibly tourists? Like a crap ton of villagers who walk through the city and you can form a relationship with ALL of them, blowing everyone’s mind. Then you could have a diary or something to keep track of your relationship with all 400+ animals. It would be a bit like Pocket Camp in this way, but also be its own thing due to the huge variety.
Another thing that I would love would be an upgradeable boat that can go out onto the ocean, with each upgrade allowing you to go a little bit further and get rarer and more difficult fish species (with some alternate colored ones, like Shiny Pokemon).

      Reply
      • Oh, I really like that! Something to keep track of everyone would be great! And I like the boat too, a way to get rarer fish sounds good especially when you’ve got those big loans and need to rack up money

        Reply
        • It just sort of makes sense to scale up in that way, if they also scale up to upgrading entire cities over time. That’s assuming that they don’t introduce some new way to get Bells which we can’t even imagine at the moment. An idea I have for that would be tenants, where you can welcome villagers into your home and get some money from that every week or so. It would be a double whammy because you get to keep your favorite villagers in one place, AND get paid for it too!

          Reply
          • You’ve got some good ideas. Do you think they’ll introduce new species of villagers? I was thinking more sea life as the octopi are kind of one offs. Sharks? Crabs?

          • Thank you, I honestly just started thinking about it now. Back when Wild World was the latest release I was a little kid who thought the series was for girls or babies, and laughed at the idea of playing it, but now it makes me extremely happy. You actually just reminded me of an idea that I had probably 10 years ago or so! Basically, I thought there could be some rare villagers based on underwater species like sharks, crabs, whales, angler fish, etc. which wash up on shore (like Gulliver) all disoriented and can then become a part of your town. It would also be neat because they would be super foreign (maybe speaking an underwater language that has to be translated) and give you very rare items from sets exclusive to them.

          • That would be cool. I wonder if that would imply that there’s an underwater city where they live.

But what do you think about the idea of having negative relationships with villagers?

  10. uhg… how do i even condense my thoughts on BOTW. I’m sitting here with 1300+ words written on the game.

I know I gotta shorten it but I just have so much love for this game >.>
