RUMOR: Gen VIII Games Coming to Switch in 2018

It isn’t a rumor that GameFreak is working on a main series Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch, but exactly when is a point of contention. Many gamers thought that “Pokémon Stars” (later revealed to be Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon precursor or even just a tech demo) would be the first main game on Nintendo’s new console after gaming journalists erroneously reported on it last year. One year later and nothing concrete has been announced, but that could change soon.

A Reddit poster with a history of correctly leaking gaming news posted, DasVergeben, recently posted a new topic about some of 2018’s plans from Nintendo. Relevant to Pokémon fans is the fact that GameFreak is under pressure to release Generation VIII next year for the Switch. That means if all goes according to plan we could see the first “console” main series game within 12 months!

    • I feel like Nintendo has some master plan in motion to sell a crazy number of consoles which involved Zelda on launch day and Mario in the holidays, then for next year it’s probably Animal Crossing, Smash Bros. and Pokémon to top it off. Wishful thinking on their part.

    Trademark images for Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Zelda, amiibo and…Super Smash Bros. That last one has to be related to Smash Switch (unless it’s instead related to Smash amiibo, which it isn’t). Since there’s a separate trademark for Pocket Camp on this article I’m pretty sure Animal Crossing Switch is on the way in 2018 as well. Should be a fun year. Could we be seeing a blowout December Direct rather than waiting for January?

      • I only say that because everyone talks about Nintendo’s “traditional” big January Direct, but I think they’re going to mix it up this time. Zelda could relate to the DLC releasing in December, Splatoon could be DLC as well, amiibo for, well, new amiibo, and AC + Smash for big announcements. Then everything else is third-party. There’s a chance!

    • Standard licensing/trademark fanfare, they update the trademarks to include more products (mobile, merchandise,..) and lengthen the period of the trademark, nothing new. For all it may mean is that they intend to gather profits from the franchise, which doesn’t surprise me at all since they still sell all those stuff.

      • I understand that argument of course, but Smash Bros. still sticks out like a sore thumb in this list. That makes me think the others could be suspect as well.

  3. Spoilers for USUM (so pretty much just spoilering this for butter) I’m really upset we didn’t get a new Nihilego form. As in, Mother Beast Nihilego but without Lusamine in it. You can explain away the change by saying ‘it has human energy in it’ and stuff. Keep it Rock/Poison with levitate or spice up the type Combo with Fairy/Poison or something. It could’ve even been through Ultra Burst like Ultra Necrozma is.

  5. I think Pokemon has shifted to a faster release schedule. The pattern of Main, Sequel, Retro, hasn’t changed to Main, Sequel, Main, Retro. I expect that next year we will get Gen VIII on the switch and in 2019 we will get Gen IV on the switch.

I’m not worried and I am going try to stay optimistic because if this rumor is true (which there’s a good chance it could be given the apparent history with this leaker on getting things right before. Kinda reminds me of the Gematsu Leaker. There is a chance he could be wrong) then that means Pokemon Stars was real and that Game Freak has been considering a Switch game since 2016 or possibly earlier. Then that also means Game Freak will have had at least two or three years (or possibly more) to have worked on this game. I certainly don’t want a rushed product at all. X and Y could have been a lot better but it felt kinda rushed now that I look back on it. Though again, I am trying to think positive. Thinking negative won’t get you anywhere. From what I read in an interview the other day, veteran developers were put to work on the Switch project while younger developers were put to work on Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. I have a feeling that Game Freak knows what they’re up against. Gotta keep some faith in Game Freak that they’ll get it right for their debut game on the Switch.

  10. Please, Nintendo, if you want to pressure Game Freak, just pressure it to make a really good game. You planned to release BotW in 2015! You had take your time and everyone knows how good the result was.

  14. Ahhh finally feel like im enjoying gaming again.
    I feel relaxed under no pressure, just having fun.
    I think I became very OCD about gaming but finally it seems I’ve almost got my groove back 😛

  16. It’s so weird thinking about how Pokémon has literally been with me my entire life???

    Like I played it when I was super little with Red but never really got into it but 8 laters later I got Soul Silver and that changed my world. Before then I just played liscensed shovelware but Soul Silver was really what got me into real games

    I played Platinum and a few spin offs later on. Until eventually BW were announced and it was all I could think about for so long. I was obsessed with all of the rumors and possible hints left in other generations. When I finally got my hands on Black version the excitement was unreal

    B2W2 was the first game I bought after moving to another state. That post game was what really captivated me.

    X and Y’s announcement and hype season was just unreal even if the end result was disappointing. Nothing beats that excitement of seeing new Pokémon every month.

    The “mewthree” reveal led me to this site actually. I lurked for a looong time.
    ORAS was also crazy after all the Hoenn Confirmed memes and it’s what actually got me to make an account here

    Just idk… it’s weird looking back at it. Looking back to each game is also looking back in different stages of my life so far. When gen 8 comes out.. like… damn, things will be even more different

    • Same though. I remember having a similar realization around when X/Y came out. After each main series release, I make an effort to take a moment to think about how much my life has changed since the previous one!

  17. It makes sense that Nintendo would be pressuring GameFreak into releasing or hastening the production and development of the Switch Pokemon games. Between 2010 and 2017, Pokemon has amassed over 71 million sales across its core series, Mystery Dungeon series, and Pokken. Furthermore, Pokemon is at an all-time high right now with both X/Y and Sun/Moon soon to breach 16 million sales and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon likely to bring in sales upwards of 7-10 million. Nintendo understand that Pokemon is the bread and butter of their company at this point: if the Switch gained further traction by introducing a Pokemon title, then the tables will truly turn and competition will be in Nintendo’s favor. At the same time, if GameFreak, because they are pressured release a “bad” Nintendo Switch game in comparison to Windwaker and Odyssey, the backlash and disappointment will be quite adversarial to deal with. However, when taking into account that GameFreak has always planned ahead and have probably been working on a Pokemon Switch title since 2016 and the rushed release of Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, they might have respectfully disinclined themselves from Nintendo’s pressures. Creating a ‘meh’ game that will boost sales for one quarter versus creating an “awe-inspiring” game that will boost sales for years on end… GameFreak better make the right choice…

  23. I don’t think Nintendo “pressuring” GF is the same as them rushing. They’ve had easily 2 years already to start getting ready for this. (last year and this year) Usually production for their games takes somewhere around 3ish years. I wouldn’t even be surprised honestly if they knew something about the Switch back in 2015. They may not have had the developer unit for sure, but they would be one of the first companies that Nintendo proper would tell about the Switch. They were on the ground floor for the 3ds developer units too so it’s unsurprising if they got the Switch early too. If you count last year, this year and the better part of next year that’ll amount to almost 3 years. On top of that I’d say they’ve been developing in some pat gen 8 since 2015. They start conceptual work SUPER early for each gen so it’s not out of the question for that to have been a thing. Altogether it amounts 3 or more years of work toward the Switch game. That’s a pretty decent time period for them to get stuff ready. Plus on top of that they clearly have an understanding of how to properly create HD 3d models since most of the Pokemon models are in fact in HD, but are just scaled down to match the 3ds’ limitations. I see no reason anyone should worry about the Switch game. Not at this point anyway. We shouldn’t judge a game that we have absolutely no info on other than that it exists.

          • They prolly just don’t have a dex entry. It’s a really weird thing to do, but it is what it is. I imagine for VGC they’ll make a point to tell people what they can and can’t use. For average online play I’m sure you can use whatever you want. It’ll just be tricky for the actual competitions.

      • I think the reason is there are creatures coming from other dimensions other places etc., whole space time thing is fucked up as the generation itself.

        Whole UB thing was gimmick. Therefore they didn’t want to introduce a national dex them appearing in it. In next generaiton when there is national dex there won’t be any UB in them, there will just be Pokemon from this dimension. UBs will be long forgotten.

        Another possibility could be just Rotom being an asshole.

        This is just an opinion.
