It isn’t a rumor that GameFreak is working on a main series Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch, but exactly when is a point of contention. Many gamers thought that “Pokémon Stars” (later revealed to be Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon precursor or even just a tech demo) would be the first main game on Nintendo’s new console after gaming journalists erroneously reported on it last year. One year later and nothing concrete has been announced, but that could change soon.

A Reddit poster with a history of correctly leaking gaming news posted, DasVergeben, recently posted a new topic about some of 2018’s plans from Nintendo. Relevant to Pokémon fans is the fact that GameFreak is under pressure to release Generation VIII next year for the Switch. That means if all goes according to plan we could see the first “console” main series game within 12 months!

There are a number of ways to look at this
– Switch is a big upgrade. Masuda has already shown that they understand the challenge ahead.
– They need time to make a good quality switch game. From graphics, mechanics to story and Pokemon.
– GF always plans ahead so they must have anticipated the move to the switch and planned from earlier.
The question is when? 2016 or 2017?
– Nintendo is a business. Business is cruel. Pokemon is their diamond jewel for sales. I can definetly see them pressuring GF.
– However GF has shown before they can stand up to Nintendo albeit respectfully.
Plus GF understands the size of the project they’re taking on so surely they will try to compromise.
My switch prediction: Gen switch gets teased sometime next year.
Gets released early/mid 2019.

An interesting thought: if we do get Gen 8 next year after all, we could be seeing the first hints of this as soon as this month or December. Remember back in the fall of 2015 when they started hinting at / revealing Zygarde Complete Forme in the movie? Whenever they begin discussing Movie 21, they could also hint at a new form or Pokémon.

Oh yeah, and I did too. I was pretty confident that we’d get Gen 7 in 2016 but that threw me for a loop. Little did we know that Z and Sun/Moon would be combined in some ways!
I’d say the first real hints will come in January. I think they’ll follow a similar track like they did with eh gen 6 to 7 transition. First the new mythical we have in December and then early next year they’ll reveal either a mythical for the next gen or whatever the special Pokemon from gen 8 it is. Kind of hope it’s a regular Mon tho. It was cool when they used normal Pokemon as the special guest
