It isn’t a rumor that GameFreak is working on a main series Pokémon game for the Nintendo Switch, but exactly when is a point of contention. Many gamers thought that “Pokémon Stars” (later revealed to be Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon precursor or even just a tech demo) would be the first main game on Nintendo’s new console after gaming journalists erroneously reported on it last year. One year later and nothing concrete has been announced, but that could change soon.

A Reddit poster with a history of correctly leaking gaming news posted, DasVergeben, recently posted a new topic about some of 2018’s plans from Nintendo. Relevant to Pokémon fans is the fact that GameFreak is under pressure to release Generation VIII next year for the Switch. That means if all goes according to plan we could see the first “console” main series game within 12 months!

Well I like to think of Nintendo as a gracious and big-hearted company, but at the end of the day they’re trying to turn a profit for shareholders. BotW and Odyssey were the huge releases expected for Switch and now that they’re out there’s a need to continue the momentum with other big names.
Animal crossing, Smash bros, Yokai Watch, etc can be released next year and then Pokémon in 2019
You should have a look at what PS4/X1 are releasing next year. You wont have any doubts anymore then, Nintendo knows they’ll fall behind if they cant offer at least one big title in 2018

I personally feel like Spring ’19 might be a more reasonable assumption, but GF has been working on Switch stuff since 2016 as evidenced with their Sun/Moon porting.
But the question is, is the Sun/Moon port real in the first place?
I’d like the games to be next year, but if they’re going to be rushed which means we’ll miss out on content and awesome stories etc. then I’m happy to wait for 2019. As long as USUM is good enough to last on for two years
I don’t really feel like it’s enough time to create a polished Pokémon game for Switch. I don’t like waiting, but if it makes a better game then go right ahead. Just give me Animal Crossing Switch to pass the time! 😛
Unless they’ve been working on gen 8 for a while and all they have to do is upgrade it graphically, which is fairly easy to do unless we’re talking about a massive game
I imagine that the game has to be somewhat bigger, otherwise why make the jump? They reached the limit on the 3DS and now they’ve got a way bigger base to work with.

Id be all for this. Im sure they work on different games at the same time especially since i think it was reported in some interview that USUM was developed by a new team while a more experienced team developed and worked on Gen 8. We wont probably get Gen 8 til October/November of 2018 MAYBE
Uh, it’s kinda hard to believe that Nintendo is pressuring GF to release a new game considering Nintendo isn’t about pressuring 2nd party developers and there having years without Pokemon games before. But if that’s the case then I hope GF is able to pull it off and not to rush the game :l
I mean, I could definitely see it, business can cruel and can change like that. They could decide that “You need to have next game out by 2016, or you need to make a game by 2017.” Things definitely do change, Maybe in the past they didnt care, but now they could be more pressuring. I definitely do believe GF is being pressured. Especially seeing how big Nintendo is, I wouldn’t doubt it at all. But yea like you said, I hope GF can pull it off.
You’re forgetting that this isn’t Iwata Nintendo anymore, and Pokemon is one of their flagship franchises.
They are banking on the Switch’s success. They know Pokemon is their #1 game. A new Pokemon game soon for the switch would be an instant success. It would finally encourage all the 3DS users it’s time to upgrade, and lure in past fans with the new graphics. Solidifying the Switches position next to the PS4 and Xbox. From a business perspective.. this is 100% believable
Yeah it makes sense that they’d want to make fans upgrade their 3ds to a switch but, is there really any hurry for this? So maybe they’re forcing GF to finish it in 2018 because there aren’t many big games coming that year; they have Kirby, FE and a few more really but nothing as big as Mario or Zelda.

Gen 7 is really quick then. 2 years for a generation is incredibly short. I thought they’d draw out the anime with another arc like they did in BW with the arc where traveled around a bunch of islands.

I haven’t seen the SM anime, so I can’t say, but it does seem they’re focusing less on filler this time around and are more interested in creating a concise story.
Still a considerably big chunk of filler episodes (not BW level tho) but they are less annoying because of the slice of life themed content

Whatever. It’ll come when it comes and all that matters is that it’s a solid game. No one can say for sure if it will be or not at this point so anyone saying that it coming out next is a bad thing is jumping to conclusions. They spent a crap ton of time on DP and look how that turned out. I’m sure whatever it is it’ll be up the the general standard that has been created. At this point they know how to create 3d models and properly design a 3d world so it’s not like we’ll end up with XY again where they were inexperienced. If they bring what they know from gen 7 to the Switch then it’ll be a good game. Also just because Ishihara said he thought the Switch would fail it doesn’t mean that GF shared the same thought. Ishihara runs TPC not GF. If Masuda and the higher ups at GF saw potential then they could have gotten started right from the get go. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were at the very least looking at the system when developer units were being shipped out before but was announced. Don’t worry guys it’ll still be a Pokemon game
The issue some people have, myself and Star included, is that Pokémon relies too much on the fact that ‘its a Pokémon game’. I know that many people are happy with the current formula, but it’d just be nice to see a new innovative Pokémon game and that’s near impossible in such a short time span.

Developing for the Switch is a very different beast from anything done before. This is their chance to take their time and make something new. It’s a total waste if they’re goona be rushed
I get what you’re saying, but it’s not like they’ve never ever made a game for a console before. Plus the 3ds really isn’t as different compared to the Switch as you’re making it out to be. They already know how to make high res models. It’s not a matter of making the models. The obit real difference is that the Switch is a single screen and the 3ds is two. They’re more than equiped to handle it. Now if you’re worried about story and concepts that’s a different thing

I know this is what’s being reported and all, but I still think it’ll come in March 2019 or something like that. I could see it being announced either at E3 or around September next year and then have a fairly short hype window (yet longer than USUM by a country mile). November 2018 could happen, but it just feels wrong to me.
I really hope that PokéSwitch comes as late as possible, I just want these games to be as great as possible and I’m afraid that they’ll just make it ‘current Pokémon, but longer’.
Well, this is their first time on the switch and they seem to have only one year to make the game so that seems the most likely chance. But maybe the second games they make for the Switch is something that is “great as possible” who knows.
They won’t have a year to make the game, they would’ve been making it simultaneously with other games which is still harmful because it means it wasn’t that focused on it it only gets like a year to itself

If well paced? Maybe around 50-60? That’s a solid game length I think without feeling over board. Plus with Pokemon it’s not like it really matters. The most amount of time I’ve put into Pokemon games is typically not even while playing the story

As for Pokemon on the switch i’m very very skeptical,
Yes the Switch is the hot new item around but i just don’t know how well a full fledged pokemon game will go down, i dunno i just feel weird about it being on home consoles on the big screen and I don’t like carrying the switch on my person at all times unlike my 3ds which is always in my pocket everywhere i go. and the online capabilities don’t like me very much and won’t connect anywhere that isn’t my basement

As for Gen 8 I really hope they step up their game and really focus on creating lots of new interesting pokemon with plenty to choose from, I just really don’t like the small pokedexs and want plenty of variety because plenty can agree from the last 2 gens that some types got plenty of attention while others got shafted,
As for a region I want something based on either Australia or possibly Russia, but mostly Australia since it has so much life and mystery to it and that would really work for me
as for mechanics i kinda hope they take a more wild and bold unorthodox approach from the whole overworld, i kinda wish they could take a more…breath of the wild approach where Pokemon sightings are more immersive where you could actually see pokemon skitter and wander around
now for some negatives, it is not unheard of that as players we want bigger and longer and more spectacular games by the year and it takes a lot of time, energy brain power and a whole lotta fresh imagination, yeah we want gigantic post games and bigger flashier things but sometimes they just don’t have the ideas or go the extra mile or time limitations are a factor, but i believe that if they hold out just long enough and got plenty of people on it we can actually see something like that
