Gaming Journalists Let Pokémon Fans Down

Imagine you had knowledge of a brand-new game; when would be the best time to share its existence with people that cared? If you chose “on the day that its predecessor finally arrived 9 months after it was announced”, you might just be a jerk. That’s exactly what Tom Phillips, and gaming site Eurogamer, decided to do on the release of Pokémon Sun & Moon with the revelation that a third game, codenamed Pokémon Stars, was in the works.

Two months and one giant Nintendo Switch press conference later we’re still no closer to learning about whether or not the game exists. Other gaming journalists, eager to capitalize on the buzz about the title, even casually doled “info” on Reddit (yes, I’m referring to Laura K. Dale).

I like rumors. I imagine that most people visiting my site like rumors. What I don’t like is when professional gaming sites build up hype for a title that seems like it will be revealed soon, but ends up being a no-show. With Sun & Moon being announced a full nine months in advance, it wouldn’t be too crazy to assume that we would get a five or six month advance notice of Stars if it was going to be a Summer 2017 release (which was later “pushed back” according to these same sources).

Just because you have information doesn’t mean you need to share it right away. Professional gaming sites (which this site is not, we’re a fansite) should temper expectations and let fans have at least a little enjoyment of a game’s release before they’re bombarded with news about a successor that may or may not exist.

You all may feel different, but I had to weigh in with my disappointment on how the “professionals” have handled things.

  1. Yay I’m really thankful that the mods did it hip hip hooray! Now I won’t have to worry about him replying tome and me accidentally replying to him again! Victory is OURS!

  2. To be honest, nobody said it was due to be revealed soon. More even, common sense dictated that it would be a while before it got shown, since they still have 3DS copies of the game to sell. Blaming people for sharing information too soon all because you set up the wrong expectations yourself doesn’t help anyone.

That said, I feel the agonising pain of rumours, but I do believe all will be revealed in March a week or two after Switch launch to garner some momentum for the console.

  6. Currently debating whether I want to choose the Grey Switch SKU and buy the Red/Blue Joy-Con pack alongside, or if I choose the Blue/Red Switch SKU and then buy the grey JCs as extras or just the Red/Blue ones so I have both colours in left and right. I don’t know what I like more, blue on the right or blue on the left. And I think having grey as an option is better if you want to stay low profile, and I’m not buying three pairs of Joy-Cons at launch :P.

  8. I have something to say for all the people out there that say they want to buy an extra coloured joycon and make them all blue or all red. You know you cant do that right? Like the left and right side work on their own sure but you still have a designated left and right, and not all buttons are present on both. So unless they make ones that you can buy that have the other side in the same colour. You’re stuck with blue and red together.

      • yeah, but thats what I mean, you would have to buy them separately. So you’re better off getting the grey with the console if you want to have matching sides. Otherwise you’ll end up with like 3 red and 1 blue or vice versa

  9. I had the longest battle of my life…..
Playing a Rom hack called Order and Chaos
I decided the fire starter (A scorpion) was really cool
Basically need to grind to level 20 on level 3’s to get past the first area
Got sick of the shit and used rare candies
    Saw other bullshit
Added Walk through Walls on to avoid said bullshit
Game gives no indication on direction, walks into area with level 40s vs my level 20 starter
Begins to break the game trying to figure out what to do
6th gym is a Koga’s gym clone that doesn’t properly work, hence a half an hour on the damn puzzle… in and out
Game breaks from this point onward
    Forced to restart
Hacks in the badges so I can actually story and skip that gym
    Game breaks and becomes unplayable

Please… to you rom hackers out there…. please test your game and not release a total shit crockpit like this…

      • Here’s what really sucks, some of the fakemon designs were great. There was a space snail on goomy levels of cute. And best of all, they added ANTI HACKING FEATURES TO A GAME LIKE THIS
Like seriously, everything broke at once…. I tried to glitch it into working but seriously…. This wouldn’t have been a problem if a working pokedex to locate pokemon and proper grinding were actually allowed

      • Yeah….
Worst of all… I don’t exactly have self control…. take a wild guess what happened once I learned there was a ghost fighting type halfway across the region…
No seriously, gym six was so bad that I tried to spawn a battle pokemon in (Mewtwo) to kill my team just so I could get out

  10. So, bit odd because it’s a Switch article, but besides the switch what’s everyone excited for this year? Me and my friends are planning a meal after our preliminary exams and then we’re having a full on party after the actual exams with nearly everyone in our school year and I’m actually so excited

    gonna be lit fam ?

Pokedex Entry: A pokemon traditionally owned by the high class that enjoys the art of battle. It tends to look down on pokemon or people which it sees as a lower class. It is very picky in everything it does, ranging from its diet to the very battle style it has. The battle style it works with is specific but specialized. Under their cold hearted exterior, they would risk death in order to protect a trainer who treats it nicely enough.

Elitist: This Pokemon chooses to only able to use moves of its own type. Moves of its own type do 2.25x their normal damage. Super effective moves it uses do 3.0x their normal damage
