Gaming Journalists Let Pokémon Fans Down

Imagine you had knowledge of a brand-new game; when would be the best time to share its existence with people that cared? If you chose “on the day that its predecessor finally arrived 9 months after it was announced”, you might just be a jerk. That’s exactly what Tom Phillips, and gaming site Eurogamer, decided to do on the release of Pokémon Sun & Moon with the revelation that a third game, codenamed Pokémon Stars, was in the works.

Two months and one giant Nintendo Switch press conference later we’re still no closer to learning about whether or not the game exists. Other gaming journalists, eager to capitalize on the buzz about the title, even casually doled “info” on Reddit (yes, I’m referring to Laura K. Dale).

I like rumors. I imagine that most people visiting my site like rumors. What I don’t like is when professional gaming sites build up hype for a title that seems like it will be revealed soon, but ends up being a no-show. With Sun & Moon being announced a full nine months in advance, it wouldn’t be too crazy to assume that we would get a five or six month advance notice of Stars if it was going to be a Summer 2017 release (which was later “pushed back” according to these same sources).

Just because you have information doesn’t mean you need to share it right away. Professional gaming sites (which this site is not, we’re a fansite) should temper expectations and let fans have at least a little enjoyment of a game’s release before they’re bombarded with news about a successor that may or may not exist.

You all may feel different, but I had to weigh in with my disappointment on how the “professionals” have handled things.

  1. maybe the pokemon company going to reveal Pokemon stars in a later month like may to the pokefans enjoy sun and moon because if they reveal in January everyone forgot about Sun and Moon play Stars that is actually the same game just the difference (spoiler alert) is that Necrozma is the main legandary and Cosmog evolveinto that and also no exlusive found.Passimian is available at day and Oranguru at night and Rockruff evolves into lycanroc(midday) in the day and Lycanroc(midnight) also Tortunator is found at day as well as Alolan Vulpix Drampa and Alolan sandshrew at night. So everyone be disapointed in september if they reveal in summer.

  2. Lmao at people complaining about Kart 8 Deluxe when Pokémon’s been pulling the same shtick for nearly twenty years

    • Yes Pokemon definitely adds just 10 new Pokemon every game
Same exact region in every game
      Adds one new feature
      Includes features from previous games
Yup Pokemon has been doing that for 20 years

      • Or maybe I was talking about the third versions

        Which are literally

        >Small story changes
        >Oh look we tweaked a character design or two
        >These three Pokémon have new forms

        Reply
      • They should just make a game based solely on Pokemon, just no new features and or gimmicks and just make a shit ton of new Pokemon

        Reply
        • No because that’d be boring, imo the gimmicks are the only stuff keeping the game alive

Not to mention that why just shit out Pokémon when you can store and release

          Reply
          • (I honestly think you just go out of your way to disagree with me)
How could a large selection of Pokemon be boring? I mean what’s honestly more important features or the damn thing it’s based on aka Pokemon

Why don’t we put it to a poll
Who votes more Pokemon less features
            Or
Who votes less Pokemon more features

          • No Earthen, just because someone doesn’t share your opinion doesn’t mean they’re out against you

And its my opinion, I don’t need a poll to assure my fragile ego like you do

          • Bah, Gimmicks are killing the games
They oversell the idea and sacrifice a lot to give into them

They show just focus on decent sized rosters and a actually solid story

          • SuMo was solid for a kids game

            Gimmicks appeal to kids

Do you get the recurring theme here

      • Technically the sequels count like that, you know B2W2, Platinum, etc….they add no new Pokemon and keep most of the previous things the same.

      • Personally My favorite complaints have been people complaining to Nintendo that Skyrim going to cost $60, despite its still being the same price on the XB1 and PS4, and console makers don’t actually set the prices on games; dev’s do.

          • It most certainly is. It’s just that people want to have a reason to be angry. Like that being a reason. People saying the new Mario looks like sonic 06 because one level appears to be taking place in a city. That Nintendo doesn’t care about Metroid any more, despite Reggie openly saying give them tine to announce that a game might be coming. That the controller’s are way to expensive despite the hardware that they have in them probably being half the cost alone(Yeah their expensive, but remember that Amiibo scanner in the joystick. The only price we can go off of with those things is from the 3ds version which is around 20 dollars, so seeing something cost $70 isn’t impossible to understand.)

People just want to have a reason to be upset about everything because the simple truth is that it seems that we’ve kinda reached a weird point in our culture, if you’ll allow me to rant. Where in saying for years “vote with your wallet” we’ve kinda twisted it around that people see the end consumer as the most important thing and thus anything that isn’t to our advantage is bad, even if what the consumer wants varies. That really I’ve seen people openly say that they wished that they held back the switch for a holiday release simply so that they could have an insanely strong launch lineup, not not realizing that those games would largely hurt one another’s sales, and is the likely reason why nobody’s trying to release anything to compete with Zelda across the board. That the system should have been sold at a loss and expected to make a profit from the games like Sony and Microsoft, but at the same time Microsoft’s been losing money from the XB1, and while Sony’s making bank from the PS4, the company’s openly talking about merging divisions of their company to save money do to their poor sales across the board in their other divisions, and that could easily change in the future.

    • I’m complaining about the rumors that there were 16 new tracks which turned out to be false. I’m still excited for the game being on the Switch. I think MK8 is the best in the series history.

      Reply
    • Well technically ‘third’ versions were done away with almost 10 years ago. But yeh I see what you mean.

Personally I never understood why people buy both versions of a new generation…But let’s not get into that.

      Reply
    • In what way, exactly?

Pokemon gives us an altered story, more character development, tons of new features, etc. and MK8 deluxe is supposedly giving us a few purely aethstetic characters and a battle mode (which does look fun, I’ll admit).

  3. Sorry to ask here, but anyone have any tips for battle tree multi. My teammate keeps making stupid moves ?. I can’t carry that old man on my back any more. It will break

    • That’s exactly why I want stars to be real, though! SM was already an amazing game, so I’d love to see what a third version could add on!

  5. What’s with the whiny blogpos…uh..I mean “article”?

That’s just modern journalism for you. But just to be clear, nobody “let” anybody “down” here.

I didn’t let rumors of Stars “ruin” my enjoyment of Sun, why would it? Sun is an awesome game and I still have lots of fun with it (I haven’t even finished all the post game quests!)
Why would the news that there might be a third version in the works take away from that experience? Aren’t you underestimating the capacity of people to enjoy things? Of write them off as too fragile, easily marred by some morsel of news/rumour? (bonus: Marshadow hasn’t even been release yet, so no marring possible :-P)

In addition to that, I did not expect any news of Stars at this point, the rumours already said Stars was pushed back and Sun/Moon are still fresh so Nintendo is unlikely to reveal it at a period when it still could negatively influence Sun/Moon’s release. We might hear about it in a couple of months, or longer.

The rumours are not at fault for what fans might make of them or any expectations that were deduced from them, but not explicitly stated.

I don’t really see the problem here.

    • I sort of agree with you. It’s only a let down if you allow yourself to become hyped with such minimal information.

A let down would be an officially announced game being cancelled or something.

      Reply
    • I admit I’m fine with no Stars info or it at all, but if you’ve seen the stuff this guy posts you’d hate him too

      Reply
      • Sorry but I’m not sure what guy we are talking about, if you mean, the one who wrote the article on Eurogamer? I don’t really see anything wrong with the article and it doesn’t promise info for the Switch release.
But I do agree that the last part of the article is a bit…manipulative…

Unless you want to keep him coming back, don’t entertain him. Don’t reference him at all. Just pretend he doesn’t exist. Then all it is is a child screaming that he didn’t get a toy and still not getting it after screaming his little head off. Don’t validate what he says with a response

        • Oh I haven’t beaten any of them in Supers. I don’t really have the time. Still sitting a 45 Streak on Super Singles.

          Which partner do you use?

          Reply
          • I recommend you choose a partner where your first pokemon is faster than there’s because then you will be taking most of the initiative, and you wont have to rely on them to attack the right one. And your partner is up to you. Just build a team around their strengths and weaknesses.

          • I have Wally ulocked as a decent partner, but after a couple of 20+ streaks losing due to the incompetency of the AI partner, I haven’t bothered much further.

I only do Super Singles for the BP, when I have time

          • I might beat super singles recruit some good teammates then comeback to multi. I have done this so much I have 800+ BP

And you tell us you don’t even like Pokémon and you ridicule us on a site for pokemon… Why go to a fandom or blog site to talknabout your likes instead of giving us more of a reasons to punch our walls!

So go bug some other site that agrees with you and your motives and stop giving us a hard time about our likes and dislikes!

  11. Is there any chance that someone a little more frequent here could be given mod powers? I’m not saying that our current mods are doing a bad job, don’t get the wrong impression. I think they’re doing a fantastic job but the thing is many of them only come on here like once a day or every so often, and by then the damage is already done. Just my two cents. My unwanted and probably wasted two cents. 😛

  14. Hey guys,
Sorry for the delay in getting things situated around here, but I’ve gotten rid of a certain troll permanently from our comment section. The staff here at PJN lead very different and busy lives, so I understand why some of you are vouching for a more active community moderator. We’ll be looking into that in the coming weeks for sure. Your feedback is always appreciated. 🙂
