Gaming Journalists Let Pokémon Fans Down

Imagine you had knowledge of a brand-new game; when would be the best time to share its existence with people that cared? If you chose “on the day that its predecessor finally arrived 9 months after it was announced”, you might just be a jerk. That’s exactly what Tom Phillips, and gaming site Eurogamer, decided to do on the release of Pokémon Sun & Moon with the revelation that a third game, codenamed Pokémon Stars, was in the works.

Two months and one giant Nintendo Switch press conference later we’re still no closer to learning about whether or not the game exists. Other gaming journalists, eager to capitalize on the buzz about the title, even casually doled “info” on Reddit (yes, I’m referring to Laura K. Dale).

I like rumors. I imagine that most people visiting my site like rumors. What I don’t like is when professional gaming sites build up hype for a title that seems like it will be revealed soon, but ends up being a no-show. With Sun & Moon being announced a full nine months in advance, it wouldn’t be too crazy to assume that we would get a five or six month advance notice of Stars if it was going to be a Summer 2017 release (which was later “pushed back” according to these same sources).

Just because you have information doesn’t mean you need to share it right away. Professional gaming sites (which this site is not, we’re a fansite) should temper expectations and let fans have at least a little enjoyment of a game’s release before they’re bombarded with news about a successor that may or may not exist.

You all may feel different, but I had to weigh in with my disappointment on how the “professionals” have handled things.

  1. How is it a let down? Eurogamer/Laura Kate Dale/Emily Rogers don’t have any power over when the game will be announced. They simply reported on what they heard while the information was still fresh to them. Did it seem like the right time to release the info on the release date of SuMo? Maybe not, but in no way did it take away from SuMo. Either way you can’t blame people for saying what they hear. Info gets leaked to people all the time. Sometimes rumors come out months or even as long as a year from when the games actually get announced. That doesn’t mean the people reporting on said rumors are trying to string people along. They’re just getting the info out when they can. Let’s say Stars did get announced without any prior rumors. then Eurogamer stated that they knew all along. People would be calling them liars or just wanting to jump on board then too. You can’t blame people for saying what the DO know and not what they don’t. None of the leakers for Stars ever stated that it would be shown off or even announced anytime soon. And once again I doubt the idea of a new Pokemon game ruined SuMo for anyone. It’s pretty obvious at some point we’ll get a new game. It certainly didn’t ruin it for me……..Sorry for the rant hahaha

    • Journalism isn’t just about sharing news, it’s also about when to share news. Gaming isn’t the most life-or-death news genre, but I think it should be handled in a way that respects fans. I think in this case they just wanted the big $$$ that came from Sun & Moon being a hot topic and they knew it would drive traffic.

      • That may be, but you have no way of knowing what they were really thinking. Again I’d say that yes maybe the actual release date of SuMo may not have been the most appropriate time to do it, but it’s not like it really ruined anything for anyone. News site/stations report news in this fashion all the time. I’m sure you have also thought at one time or another that certain rumors or news could help this site out a bit. You just gotta play the game. Them posting about Stars so early may not have been very tasteful, but it’s not like it was hurting anyone. either way everyone has a right to their opinions lol

          • yes, Im pretty sure every person had a different translator, they just happened to give that guy most of the work

          • i do feel bad, it must suck messing up. I’d be nervous too if i had to translate for 500,000+ people

      • Honestly it’s probably not the that the guy got fired. After the internet had a good laugh at his misery, People pretty quickly realized that most of the presentation was scripted, but Suda51(being him) pretty much went completely off script needing the translator to translate in realtime. Made worse was that apparently filled his speech with old Japanese fighting game references that even a vet. translator would have trouble picking up on.

          • Yeah, but that’s because most people are kind of idiots who would hate on someone for little to no justifiable reason rather then look deeper and see who’s at fault.

          • yea i understand, i didnt think he did that bad of a job, i think was more focused on the game trailers lol

  2. Gaming “journalism”, similar to comics and film “journalism” isn’t journalism. These industries are little more than fan sites. And guess what, there’s nothing wrong with that. As long as these people don’t turn out to be lying trolls, gimme all the info your heart desires. I’m not 5 years old. I know how to temper my emotions and expectations and on the off chances that I fail to do so I don’t blame other people. Has responsibility for oneself delapitated to the point that people are blaming news sources for creating too high of expectations for a product? Seriously… Screw modern society.

  3. Usually, for rumors like these, I can expect that it has a high chance of being fake, so I take in a grain of salt. Plus, I’m not really expecting Stars to be announced right away, taking in consideration the the fact that PokeBank has not released yet and Battle Competitions have just started (basically) for Sun and Moon. I will expect it to be announced in May at the latest, though.

  5. Since this article is a little negative, I’ll tell you something pretty cool and that makes me happy. I got my first ever hunted shiny last night, it was a Rowlet that I got at fourteen eggs. I have only ever done one hunt before this, for Chespin. Needless to say, I didn’t get it. P.S. I named him Roy like red arrow.

    • Not really, if SuMo gets sequels they make more sense to come out. And tbh, it has a lot of plot threads to be resolved

      Reply
      • Yeah, but plot thread’s being unresolved wouldn’t be new in Pokemon. Look at gen 6 and a lack of any squeal games. As well you can’t really ignore the elephant in the room that their’s always going to be a stigma to making a direct sequel to any pokemon game after the considerable lower sales of B&W 2.

        • XY didn’t have any astounding ones though, compared to say, Lillie going to Kanto or the whole ordeal with Mohn. XY just had minor plot threads like Zygarde and the ghost girl

          Reply
          • Yeah, but your points pretty subjective. Lillie’s point is pretty much taken care of by talking to Wicke at some point in the game saying that she’s going to see Bill since he’s a good bet on curing her mother, and Mohn’s kind of not important in any sense. He might be their father, and he might not be. However anything about him would be pretty irreverent. It wouldn’t really add anything more to the game since he’s barely mentioned in the story and him coming back really doesn’t have that many options to explore from a story telling point.

          • I mean true, but it’s undeniable that the plot points are at least more apparent than XY, not to mind the fact that SuMo were a phenomena and a sequel can cash in on that

That’s not that tied up though. Do they ever meet Bill? Can Bill even help Lusamine?

Also Mohn is obviously their father. He looks like them, is mentioned inadvertently if not by name (can’t remember if Gladion does say so or not, but he mentions his father’s role in Ultra Beast research and the pioneer mentioned in the dimension lab place is called Mohn), and is the reason that Lillie, Lusamine, and Gladion are where they are now. It’s his absence that drove Lusamine insane and caused her to isolate her children, which drives the whole point of SuMo. From a story telling point, it’d just be interesting to see what happens when someone is reunited with a long lost loved one and how they’ll cope with that change and then, cause each other to possibly change once more or to reflect on how they’ve changed. Saying he’s irrelevant is just unjustified imo

  6. I sorta felt the same way you did PJ. Everyday on my way to school I check pokejungle, and if I’m being honest, I was kinda dissapointing to find out that the game that I was so excited to play was going to inferior to this next game, the announcement timing was pretty bad.

  7. I need help with something in Emerald:

So I’m not sure what levels my Pokemon should be when taking on the Elite Four, I’ve been doing a little bit of training and this is what my team looks like so far:
    Sceptile (lv 47)
    Hariyama (lv 43)
    Slaking (lv 44)
    Crawdaunt (lv 44)
    Manectric (lv 43)
    Flygon (lv 45)
The first Elite Four member’s highest leveled Pokemon is level 49, so I am trying to aim for there. Though, in your opinion, how much more should I train up to? And is Victory Road the best place to level up at, or are there other ways to get exp faster in Emerald?

  8. I actually agree with this article. It wasnt in their place to reveal anything new. Sure they are journalist, but you have to know when to reveal information. Pokemon isnt a topic we NEED to know about. If they do reveal early, they could have waited a couple of months. They revealed Stars maybe a month or two after SM. Give us some more time with the game before you start making everyone talk about a new game. Honestly, I feel like Im being rushed with sun and moon, everyone is making hope list for Stars, and I barely even compiled a top 10 list for things a love about this game. Heck, I havent even finished everything in my Sun (stupid battle tree)

However, I don’t if they even know when Stars will be officially revealed so they probably just revealed asap it just in case (Which I do not agree with). I think it was very unprofessional of them to reveal it this early.

  9. Really hope these rumors are false. I would Hate for Stars to be just sun and moon, so why give it the code name to begin with? Well only time will tell…

  10. I’ve been telling you blokes for weeks that Stars isn’t real
We just got Sun and Moon 3 months ago and you greedy craps collectively believe in false rumors

  11. I’m more upset by the Mario Kart rumors. “Oh, I’m hearing 16 new tracks for the Mario Kart port.” And then it comes out that there will be no new tracks lol. I’m still excited to play Mario Kart on Switch and the new battle mode, but that’s false hype right there.

In regards to Stars, I didn’t expect it announced at the Switch event.

  12. Something just occurred to me. When Kimishima took over, he said that Nintendo directs would take on a new format in 2016. Well, here we are in 2017, and directs are just more sparse, they’re still the same.
