Switch Presentation Recap

With the conclusion of the Nintendo Switch Presentation, we have a whole slew of new information to share about the Nintendo Switch, including its release date, features, as well as some titles launching throughout the year.

Release Date and Price
The Nintendo Switch is set to launch March 3, 2017 for $300. This includes the main console, a pair of Joy-Con controllers, a grip, wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock, an HDMI cable, and an AC adapter. Two versions will launch, one with gray Joy-Cons and one with neon blue/red Joy-Cons.

The Joy-Cons
The presentation highlighted some interesting and unique functionalities for the Switch controllers. As we know, they can be popped off the side of the Switch and can be used to play two-player games. Each Joy-Con is characterized by a joystick, four face buttons, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, as well as small L/R shoulder buttons. The right Joy-Con has an AR camera that detects distance, as well as an NFC reader for Amiibo figures. The left Joy-Con has some different features, having the ability to capture screenshots. Both the left and right Joy-Con have a unique vibration feature called “HD Rumble.” A demonstration performed by Nintendo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi claims that the Joy-Con can feel as though you are holding a cup of ice, with the addition of each cube making it heavier and heavier. It will be a neat element to play around with, for sure.

Specs
Nintendo officially confirmed that the Switch has a 6.2-inch 720p screen that can be used for on-the-go play. The Switch has a default 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded, alongside two speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a slot on the top right for game cartridges. The Switch is reported to last anywhere between 2.5 to 6 hours, but can also be utilized while it is charging. Additionally, there will be no more region lock.

Accessories
Aside from what comes in the box, you will be able to purchase additional pairs of Joy-Cons for $79.99 and the Pro Controller for $69.99. A set of racing wheels and a Switch Dock Set can also be purchased for $14.99 and $89.99, respectively.

Online Service
Similar to other major consoles, the Switch is introducing a paid service that will start as a free trial at launch. The subscription includes online play, dedicated lobby and voice chat functionality, a monthly game download (NES or SNES), and additional exclusive deals. Price options were not discussed quite yet.

  1. Can we talk about how PC Earthbound is though..? Like honestly I’m disgusted that Paula is so powerful. Mary sue much? And some of the villains are white males. It’s just so liberal and I hate it.

  7. So, a few things worry me about the Switch.
    1) How will paid online will play into games like Splatoon 2?
    2) How are you supposed to enjoy games like Splatoon 2, that are very online-heavy, away from home or on a plane ride?

    • To answer 2.

Well the logical answer is your meant to either play local multi-player, or your likely going to have a single player experience.

    • 1) Probs gotta subscribe.

      2) Online heavy games work well if you’re online. If you’re on a plane and don’t want to play the campaign maybe play a different game? lol

    • They did say that they had a lot more to reveal about the game. Since the main functionality of the switch is being able to take the console anywhere, Im sure that the story mode in Splatoon 2 will be a lot longer and elaborate, they might also add a few modes and “mini games” that can be enjoyed offline.

    • You can answer both of these questions by looking at Xbox and PS4 FPS. You can play their very limited single player without internet. To play online you’re gonna need their service.

  8. Ugh. I didn’t want to talk about this but it’s been on my mind recently. I’m really worried that the Switch won’t sell well. Don’t get me wrong, I personally love the console and it looks great, but seeing the general feedback (even if it is just a vocal minority) is making me very scared that this will sell Wii U numbers. I feel connected to nintendo on a personal level, their games basically define my life, and I’m concerned to see what will happen to them if the Switch flops. Sorry, I just really wanted to get this off of my mind.

    • Honestly Don’t think much of it for now. People pretty much planted their flag in the ground after the switch even saying that it was the best thing ever, or at least happy with it like you and I, or that its the worse thing ever.

However the numbers don’t lie. It has sold out pretty much everywhere and if it isn’t sold out it’s pretty close. Its clear that its got an initial high demand. And as much as people complain about Nintendo not being able to meet the demand, it does come back to that debate of whether it’s better to under supply or over supply. Given they went for over supplying the Wii U, it makes sense for them to keep things conservative and thus constantly release more consoles at a steady pace to keep a pretty consistent demand.

Also let’s be honest. People will always find a reason to complain. It cost too much despite its competition at launch costing 400-500 dollars. It has a bad launch line up, despite its competition being no better really at their time. It’s highway robbery to be charged 70 bucks for a controller, but apparently people have no problem being charged 60 from Sony and Microsoft. Really it’s just people saying that it wasn’t everything that they wanted, and even if it was people would still find something else to complain about like the console not being able to be carried in their pocket or the fact that Mini SD cards are actually horrible forms of storage for Gaming Devices(really my only major gripe with the switch. It should have been an SSD, if even a small one.)

  9. Guys I just beat Juan and like he was so not hard to beat. I’ve heard that his Kingdra was extremely hard to beat because of Double Team, but like I one shot almost all of his team, the only one was Crawdaunt that survived one hit. I was expecting it to be very difficult, but Juan was about as easy as the gym leaders in Kalos.
