Switch Presentation Recap

With the conclusion of the Nintendo Switch Presentation, we have a whole slew of new information to share about the Nintendo Switch, including its release date, features, as well as some titles launching throughout the year.

Release Date and Price
The Nintendo Switch is set to launch March 3, 2017 for $300. This includes the main console, a pair of Joy-Con controllers, a grip, wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock, an HDMI cable, and an AC adapter. Two versions will launch, one with gray Joy-Cons and one with neon blue/red Joy-Cons.

The Joy-Cons
The presentation highlighted some interesting and unique functionalities for the Switch controllers. As we know, they can be popped off the side of the Switch and can be used to play two-player games. Each Joy-Con is characterized by a joystick, four face buttons, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, as well as small L/R shoulder buttons. The right Joy-Con has an AR camera that detects distance, as well as an NFC reader for Amiibo figures. The left Joy-Con has some different features, having the ability to capture screenshots. Both the left and right Joy-Con have a unique vibration feature called “HD Rumble.” A demonstration performed by Nintendo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi claims that the Joy-Con can feel as though you are holding a cup of ice, with the addition of each cube making it heavier and heavier. It will be a neat element to play around with, for sure.

Specs
Nintendo officially confirmed that the Switch has a 6.2-inch 720p screen that can be used for on-the-go play. The Switch has a default 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded, alongside two speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a slot on the top right for game cartridges. The Switch is reported to last anywhere between 2.5 to 6 hours, but can also be utilized while it is charging. Additionally, there will be no more region lock.

Accessories
Aside from what comes in the box, you will be able to purchase additional pairs of Joy-Cons for $79.99 and the Pro Controller for $69.99. A set of racing wheels and a Switch Dock Set can also be purchased for $14.99 and $89.99, respectively.

Online Service
Similar to other major consoles, the Switch is introducing a paid service that will start as a free trial at launch. The subscription includes online play, dedicated lobby and voice chat functionality, a monthly game download (NES or SNES), and additional exclusive deals. Price options were not discussed quite yet.

Switch Titles
A whole slew of titles were shown off for the Switch, some of which include:

1-2-Switch (March 3rd)
Arms (March 3rd)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (April 28th)
Splatoon 2 (Summer 2017)

And, of course:

Alongside these titles, there are a reported 80+ games currently in development for the Switch. No word on any Pokemon titles just yet, but there’s still plenty of time for that to happen. Nintendo will be hosting a special all-day Treehouse event starting at 6:30am PST/9:30am EST, so be sure to tune in and see what else they have in store!

    • Haven’t even pressed the sea more but ‘Firework Rabbit’ and ‘Aurora Deer’ like holy fuck I bet they look awesome

The bull probably does too but I’m a bit biased for cervids and lagamorphs :p

      • Yeah thanks!
The firework rabbit would actually look like a jackalope with magician features in its final evolution, and its signature move is a priority move simultaneously fire/electric
The Aurora deer is very majestic looking, and has features on it reminiscent of the northern lights
The minotaur I can understand, but I can tell you it has viking aspects and hammers built into its arms

  4. Version Exculsives:
    The Grasshopper Pokemon

    Hidden Ability: Inner Focus
    Height: 4’03
    Height: 102 lbs
Dex Entry: Born with such incredibly powerful legs, this Pokemon is known as “Master of the feet”. It has so many kicking techniques, many which humans have learned when they were forming martial arts. One kick from this Pokemon can knock a tree down easily.
    (Exlusive to Amber)

    The Bumblebee Pokemon
    Type: Bug/Electric
    Ability: Swarm/Levitate
Hidden Ability: Hive Guard (Boosts special attack and speed sharply when another bee Pokemon, such as Vespiquen and Beedrill, are present)
Dex Entry: The guardian of Vespiquen hives, this Pokemon shows no mercy for those who infiltrate or are nearby the hive. It’s electrical stinger acts as a generator, and can store up to 90,000 volts. Although its aggressive nature at a hive, when away from its hive, it has a drastically passive personality.

    Signature Move: Final Stinger

    (Exclusive to Chrome)

      • Possibly, but it is more focused on Vespiquen being there because it’s the queen, and guard bees naturally become more aggressive to protect the Queen and hive.
Though I understand it could work with other bugs

        • i mean its just extremely limited with just bees….since ya know just 2
But i see its a Hive Warrior who fights to protect its fellow insects

    • I did the same exact thing in my Sun run with Turtonator.
I was trying to find one at the volcano park, and spent 2 hours looking for one and gave up, so I used my female Salandit instead as a Fire type.

  6. So now that I’m playing through Moon, I’ve come to like Team Skull a bit more. The only major problem with them is that their motives are foggy and I think they need more of a story.

  7. While I’m definitely a fan of the Switch, my biggest complaint is the fact that it is coming out on March 3rd. This results in a VERY scarce launch lineup and much to be anticipated over the course of the year. In a way, this could be a good thing, but as someone who doesn’t play Zelda, I’ll probably pick up the console around summertime when MK8 and Splatoon 2 drop.

      • You guys here know how much I like thinking about the future (I made a Gen 8 theory the day after Sun/Moon released…), and this is definitely on my mind. Will the Switch become their permanent staple that simply gets improved with better hardware like the PlayStation and the Xbox, or will Nintendo come up with another crazy idea? Is it possible for Nintendo to come up with another unique, marketable idea after putting EVERYTHING they have into the Switch?

  8. This whole Switch event makes me realize how I’m slowly becoming an old man. I turn 18 exactly a week after the Switch releases, and I’m reflecting on how much things have changed since my childhood for games (even though we’ve only been through a few generations since then). It was 2005/2006, when the GameCube and Game Boy/DS are what single-handedly got me interested in video games, and those platforms are so darn simple. I still have a distinct memory of being back in my grandparent’s house in November 2006 when the Wii was launching and seeing a news story about it. I can’t imagine being a 7 year old today and seeing the Switch and all of its fancy features. Would I react in the same way as I did with the Wii? I don’t know the answer to that. I have hype, of course, but it just feels…different for some reason. Maybe it’s because I associate new technology and consoles with my childhood, which no longer exists, and it just feels wrong. Sorry for rambling, I just wanted to get this out there. #SWITCHHYPE #ARMS4EVO

  9. So let me get this straight.
If you want to play a game with another person on the Switch (split-screen), would you use the left Joy-Con and give your friend the right Joy-Con (despite the fact that each controller has a different functionality) or do you have to buy ANOTHER pair, which would put you down an additional $80?

    Reply
    • I think if it’s multiplayer, each joy-con acts as a separate controller. Only if you’re playing with more than one Switch tablet, then each person would have their own pair.

      Reply
      • Interesting. So the Up/Down/Left/Right buttons (left) would function as A/B/X/Y buttons as well for the second player? Or maybe I have this mixed up haha
