Switch Presentation Recap

With the conclusion of the Nintendo Switch Presentation, we have a whole slew of new information to share about the Nintendo Switch, including its release date, features, as well as some titles launching throughout the year.

Release Date and Price
The Nintendo Switch is set to launch March 3, 2017 for $300. This includes the main console, a pair of Joy-Con controllers, a grip, wrist straps, a Nintendo Switch dock, an HDMI cable, and an AC adapter. Two versions will launch, one with gray Joy-Cons and one with neon blue/red Joy-Cons.

The Joy-Cons
The presentation highlighted some interesting and unique functionalities for the Switch controllers. As we know, they can be popped off the side of the Switch and can be used to play two-player games. Each Joy-Con is characterized by a joystick, four face buttons, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, as well as small L/R shoulder buttons. The right Joy-Con has an AR camera that detects distance, as well as an NFC reader for Amiibo figures. The left Joy-Con has some different features, having the ability to capture screenshots. Both the left and right Joy-Con have a unique vibration feature called “HD Rumble.” A demonstration performed by Nintendo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi claims that the Joy-Con can feel as though you are holding a cup of ice, with the addition of each cube making it heavier and heavier. It will be a neat element to play around with, for sure.

Specs
Nintendo officially confirmed that the Switch has a 6.2-inch 720p screen that can be used for on-the-go play. The Switch has a default 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded, alongside two speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a slot on the top right for game cartridges. The Switch is reported to last anywhere between 2.5 to 6 hours, but can also be utilized while it is charging. Additionally, there will be no more region lock.

Accessories
Aside from what comes in the box, you will be able to purchase additional pairs of Joy-Cons for $79.99 and the Pro Controller for $69.99. A set of racing wheels and a Switch Dock Set can also be purchased for $14.99 and $89.99, respectively.

Online Service
Similar to other major consoles, the Switch is introducing a paid service that will start as a free trial at launch. The subscription includes online play, dedicated lobby and voice chat functionality, a monthly game download (NES or SNES), and additional exclusive deals. Price options were not discussed quite yet.

  1. Preordered on Taget! 😀 However, I have an Amazon gift card I want to use to get Breath of the Wild but they’re not taking preorders of the Switch version yet….

    • I did sorta the same thing, preordered the console at best buy yet I’m getting games at gamestop because I have a bunch of cards.

  2. I don’t want the launch to be “everything out”, but I would like a lot of cool stuff to come out in the half a year “launch window”, which is what is probably happening I hope. <3

  3. Quick theory thingy: The 4 giant mech things (shown on the map in the zelda bundle thing) will be the bosses of the 4 main dungeons.

  4. Not sure yet if I’m getting the Switch right away. Not going to spend 400+ euros just for one game. Mass Effect also releases in March so thats priority rn

  5. It’s insane how Fire Emblem was almost put on hiatus as a franchise to a huge revival via Awakening to 3 game launch via Fates to two spin-offs via Shin Megami Tensai and Warriors lol

    • Yeah, and all it took was pissing off some of their core fanbase and showing off that the fire emblem community is pretty toxic. Though that community got pissed at FE6 for being Too easy, so yeah. Their kinda horrible.

But Yeah! The game I wanted Hyrule Warriors to be is on the horizon.

      • i wouldn’t consider those type of people to be the fan base. Just more vocal minorities who have too much free time to kill on the internet. I would have liked to keep the “Refresh” feature but it really doesn’t bother me that it’s not there. Is FE6 Awakening? Cause yes. It was a bit easy. But at least they added higher difficulty levels.

        • No this was the general tone over on Serenes Forest, more or less the combination of Pokejungle and Serebii for Fire Emblem. Those are the hardcore fanbase, and I am making them sound worse then they are. Their pretty reasonable people, if a bit vocal.

Awakening is actually FE13. FE6 was the first game on the GBA only released in Japan and staring Roy. The game was fairly challenging and was fairly good, though it kinda screwed Roy due to the fact that he couldn’t be promoted until the final chapter of the game. However FE5 is still considered to be the hardest Fire Emblem game to date, mostly because it’s heavily weighed against the player from the start with horrible RNG when leveling. Like to give you an idea of how hard it was, imagine the start of the game, laving a level 1 lord, a swordmaster at level 1 with bad stats, and one other unit Vs. about 40-50 enemy’s, the swordmaster is scripted to die at the end of the chapter and weapon durability. It was insanely hard, and was a big reason why Nintendo kinda pushed the creator away from the series, and then later sued him when he made a game to similar to Fire Emblem.

          • Oh lmao I was on the wrong page. xD But I see whatchu saying. Well… I dunno. I like games that gimme a challenge at times but I don’t like brutally hard games either. So it doesn’t bother me too much that the games aren’t as hard as they use to be. But damn FE5 sounds hardcore af.

          • Well FE6 started out as an SNES game.

Also the suing was because of the name, not the gameplay. AFAIK, dude tried to call it Emblem Saga (or was it Tear Emblem Saga), but it was renamed to Tear Ring Saga later.

          • Wasn’t aware that it started as an SNES game. And I imagine its a bit of both really. While the name is the most likely culprit, looking to the gameplay its very clearly still fire emblem in a different skin.

          • I think clones (gameplay clones that is) aren’t sued as much back then, but I could be wrong.

Yeah agreed it must have been a bit of both…

          • Yeah, I’m certain it wasn’t sued much back in the day. In fact it might have been the the case was throw out eventually or something. I’d have to read into it again, though the lawsuit did ruin the games chances of success.

  6. Does anyone think we’ll see a minor Nintendo direct in the spring? I know that since Iwata’s passing Nintendo has been very light on directs, but having E3 be their next announcement would be a gap from January to June, which is kinda big. But then again, we didn’t get anything from E3 to the switch trailer and then from the trailer until now, so who knows.

    • I think it will happen a little before the release and I would like to see more games for the switch (especially this project octhotoka or however it is called, I’m really interested in it)

  7. So as long as you have both sun and moon and two DS to try this out on, I suppose it’s possible to get all male or all female clothing options in one game. It would just take a while. You could just buy all the version exclusive clothing, register both of your characters as each others MVP’s, and then buy what they’re wearing in the festival plaza. You’ll have to keep switching them out though, so I guess leaving festival plaza and reconnecting to the internet and stuff.

  8. One of the best things about nintendo systems was the Online Play was free.
Least the console is fairly cheap, even if conversion rates means it’s more expensive in Britain than the US.
I think I’m the only one not impressed, but that may be because I feel like I wasted money on a Wii U when some of it’s best games are on this now.

  9. Earthen brain kook a doooookmmmmnnnnnnnnn
I am pretty sure my hyper anxiety and PTSD collided and totally fucked up my psyche……..

So I think I got a handle on my preorder
I preordered the Switch on Best Buy as a guest purchase so that’s why it’s not showing up on my order history on my Best Buy account which I made AFTER pre-ordering

I have a confirmation email and order number and hopefully in 7 weeks I print out the order number on the day or night of the switch and they understand…..

    I think I need a long walk and a nap……..

  10. So it looks like our next direct is for Fire Emblem Warriors. And its going to be on the 18th. Excuse me for a moment…

    -Goes off to scream.-

    • Can’t tell if you’re hyped or not lol

Also they said it was a FE direct, not a FE Warriors direct. Maybe we’ll see the mobile game?

      Reply
      • To say I am Hyped can not begin to describe the feelings I’m feeling. but yeah, if I had to take a bet I would guess warriors, the mobile game and maybe a teaser for FE15, given its been about a year and a half since Fates was released in Japan. Even with its massive amount of DLC, IS has likely been working on the newest entry by this point and might have something to tease.

        • Honestly if we see something about FE15 it’d make the switch lineup so far perfect. BotW, Xeno 2, SM Oddysey, FE Warriors, Splatoon 2, MK8 Deluxe, the future looks bright to me.

          Reply
          • Of course the future is bright! Sure a LOADED launch would be cool, but day one isn’t what matters as long as they have Zelda. Consistent game releases are what matter.

          • Yeah. People forget that a lot of these games are designed to last for months, if not years. If you front load the launch with everything it’ll lead to a huge dry spell come summer and fall.

          • Launch isn’t too bad honestly, if we’re considering the first few months launch period. We’ve got MK8, Splatoon 2, and BotW. Yeah, it only has 1 AAA title, but BotW looks much better than the previous console launch titles, like New SMB U.
