RUMOR: 20 New Pokémon Added for Pokémon Stars

A week ago Laura Dale, a video game journalist, participated in a Reddit AMA (‘Ask Me Anything’) session for the Nintendo Switch in which she claimed that the Pokémon Sun and Moon follow-up, codenamed Pokémon Stars, could feature 20 new Pokémon.

This is notable as Dale has been involved in leaking other information about the Nintendo Switch which has been proven accurate. She mentions that another gaming writer (who unceremoniously announced Pokémon Stars on the release day of Sun & Moon) didn’t think the inclusion was likely.

Where this leaves us, the fans, isn’t known, but it does raise a question: will their be Nintendo Switch exclusive Pokémon? While we have always had new forms or event legendaries for titles within the same generation, content has never been locked away on a separate console. This could make some uncomfortable if they can’t catch ’em all without ponying up what is likely to be $300 for the Switch this spring.

A Nintendo Direct focusing on the new console is just a week away, so we could see the title announced with more details then.

  3. Any new pokemon would be appreciated its a shame that it’s only 20 I just feel that such a low amount should have been included in sun&moon. If this rumor is true I hope they give a good reason for 20 pokemon just coming out of nowhere. Bet they’ll say these pokemon are really rare that while they’re seldom seen or found. More 1% pokemon anyone??

      • I forgot they counted Mega’s as there own pokemon. also does anyone think they might recon mega’s to be a semi permanent thing I mean if the walking animations are for follower pokemon why give the to mega’s if they’re a thing that only exist within battles? At any rate I can’t wait for Stars!

          The “leamer” is a trusted source and IIRC has leaked quite a bit of information that turned out to be true. Combine this with hints such as the Rotom Dex resembling the switch, the dying 3DS and Wii U, SuMo pushing the graphical limits of the system, like its happening wheather you like it or not

            The 3DS is a now 6 year old system. The Wii U, while being only 4 years old, was a flop and barely pushed a decent amount of units. They are both dead in March. The Switch is going to replace them. That is just logic.

        • I’m saving up for it myself. I made the mistake of getting my previous systems at launch and waiting months for games I wanted anyways, might as well wait and get a nice stack of games to play at once.

    • May I ask how young are you? I know its been 10 years since the last one, but they were doing Third Versions up until gen 5. Platinum even introduced multiple new formes (which are treated as new pokemon in marketing)

          XY: They wanted Sun and Moon to be the 20th anniversary game and didn’t want to spend resources on Z and instead direct it towards making SuMo the best it can be

          • Ok what? It could be called Pokemon Nebula or Pokemon Meteor or hell, even Pokemon Uranus. Stars just sounds nice to GF I suppose.

            We have plenty of evidence for Stars and logic tells us that it most likely will be on the Switch. Like, come on Sun and Moon are honestly amazing with how much they push the 3DS but the system is at its limit. The Switch is the start of a new console generation and its time for Pokemon to move

          • Because the Switch is both their next Console and Handheld. It’ll replace both the Wiiu and 3DS. Releasing a dedicated handheld would just cannibalize sales of the Switch.

          • That’s why its a selling point. its a device that has console games that is portable. As I said before, also releasing a dedicated handheld ontop of that would just kill Switch sales, Dedicated Handheld sales, or both.

          • Pokemon would be a major selling point for the system. The reason B2W2 wasn’t on the 3DS was because it was a direct sequel rather than an advanced version. This version would be an improved version of SuMowith more pokemon, better graphics and better performance with some story fixes. Two years on the 3DS after the Switch release would be actual suicide

          • For the record, I believe its called Stars because Necrozma is, in addition to having a prism theme, a dead star.

        • Personally, I think SM were intended for the Switch, but the Switch didn’t make it in time for the 20th Anniversary. That’s why much of the UI looks like it could cleanly be merged together without affecting the battle, and why they added things like trainers in battle despite the 3DS struggling with XY as it was. With this in mind, it’d be easier to produce a third version based on their original plan, rather than planning out a sequel.

I can completely believe that the next main game will be on Switch, and I can even believe they’ll do a first and make the first entry on a new console a third version, but what I question is adding new pokemon. This however, can be solved by the possibility that the person heard marketing talk, where they consider Megas new pokemon.
