RUMOR: 20 New Pokémon Added for Pokémon Stars

A week ago Laura Dale, a video game journalist, participated in a Reddit AMA (‘Ask Me Anything’) session for the Nintendo Switch in which she claimed that the Pokémon Sun and Moon follow-up, codenamed Pokémon Stars, could feature 20 new Pokémon.

This is notable as Dale has been involved in leaking other information about the Nintendo Switch which has been proven accurate. She mentions that another gaming writer (who unceremoniously announced Pokémon Stars on the release day of Sun & Moon) didn’t think the inclusion was likely.

Where this leaves us, the fans, isn’t known, but it does raise a question: will their be Nintendo Switch exclusive Pokémon? While we have always had new forms or event legendaries for titles within the same generation, content has never been locked away on a separate console. This could make some uncomfortable if they can’t catch ’em all without ponying up what is likely to be $300 for the Switch this spring.

A Nintendo Direct focusing on the new console is just a week away, so we could see the title announced with more details then.

    • Short answer, nobody knows at this point. Just gotta wait and see. Just know that the next 10 days will be pretty much open season for fake leaks. So take everything with a grain of salt.

          • Yup. Pretty much everything about the switch will be known in a matter of days, hence why you see a lot of us talking about it in here and trying to figure out what Nintendo has planned for it.

          • Hard call. I’ve been open that I don’t think Stars is real, but even if I did it would be hard to think they would announce it so soon. Seems like its more of something you would announce at E3. That said though I wouldn’t be surprised to hear something like a Pokken port with the four new characters coming to the switch, or maybe even new characters as well.

          • I doubt it. Pokemon usually does their own thing, plus it seems too early to announce a better version of SM, I almost think it’d hinder sales.

  1. Comment Question: What’s a Pokemon that you were neutral about at first, but it grew on you over time?
Mine are Driftblim, Dedenne, Pyukumuku, and Magmortar

    • Slurpuff, I absolutely hated it when it came out and loved the Aromatisse line, but now Swirlix and Slurpuff are my favourite pokemon of all time, and I have no clue how it happened

      • Funny thing was that was the same case for Drifblim, I absolutely hated it because it was basically a possessed blimp, yet I started using it more and I find it as one of my favorite ghost types

    • I never would have thought I would use some of the pokemon in my team but they have proved themselves very useful for me over time
For Black 1: Sigilyph and Jellicent.Sigilyph had Magic Guard and was a great help against Ghetsis’ Cofagrigus while Jellicent provided great coverage for my team
For Black 2: I used Swanna and Galvantula. My Swanna was a savage against Marshall’s team, she single handedly swept and getting lucky flinches. For Galvantula,I slowly found it to be very cute
For Alpha Sapphire: Ludicolo,I never realized on how useful this pokemon was to my team until I used him, especially since I picked Torchic as my starter
For Moon: Drampa,Lycanroc Midnight form,Lurantis and Araquanid.Lycanroc,Lurantis and Araquanid lasted me for most of the game, they provided my good coverage but has since been replaced with Kommo-o,Drampa and Alolan Ninetales….even though it gave me a severe weakness in dealing with rock types.Drampa was a last minute entry into my party because I really needed a bulky pokemon and he was capable of learning surf and energy ball to provide coverage

  2. Also, happy new year all (again… I’m pretty sure I already said this on the last post)! Last year was so fun with you all!

  3. If you could redo the typing of any one pokemon (not adding or taking away the amount of types they already have), what would it be?

  4. So honest question about the switch. Its more or less been confirmed that the Switch will have only about 32 gb’s of storage on the device. Do you personally see this as an issue for yourselves? To give a bit of a sense of data size for those who aren’t that familiar, Splatoon was just shy of about 2 gb’s, something like witcher 3 was about 22 gb, and something like gta 5 is roughly around 60 gb.

    Reply
      • Yes and no? Generally cartridges are known for usually faster load times, but at a cost of size since their not cheap to produce. The exact sizes of game cards isn’t known, but its about 16 gb at launch. So in a sense you could think of it as being able to own two or less games digitally, if you buy games digitally.

        Reply
          • Yeah theirs no knocking quality, simply a concern of space at an affordable level. That, and it does seem a bit odd that Nintendo wouldn’t be designing a console that can handle a digital market like its competition easily can. I mean I can’t imagine people would complain that much if say the switch had something like say a 250 gb SSD built into it, but Who knows really. I’m still a bit of a greenhorn with specs and why it might be more favorable for Nintendo to take the switch in the direction it did.

          • Nintendo are probably just being cheap, as usual. Just like the Wii U being 8-64gb but “just expand it with an SD card yourself”.

PS 4 has to have 500 GB+ because there’s no way to add storage to it.

          • Good point. I suppose now we’ll just have to see if their is a way to increase its storage size or not. If the latter though, do you find it a possible issue? I mean its probably safe to say that we won’t see cases of dev’s offloading data, for lack of a better word, which has kinda become common practice these days with it, but it would limit the digital market a fair bit. Heck given we don’t know the full range of how big cartridges can be for the thing, I’m curious to see if that could also limit which games could even come to the console. I mean in general we know that skyrim is coming which is normally around 20 gb of data, though their are a few ways to drop that number, and its possible that they did for this version.

  5. Question, since everyone else is asking I might as well too..
In my game I will have seven trainers in a certain area, and six slots are available …
Anyone want a slot to be in? Pick your name and type

  6. I just came up with a good idea for a Fakemon:

    The Beat Pokemon
    Type: Electric/Fighting
Ability: Constant Tempo (After hit by an attack, its speed gets boosted)/Static
    Height: 4′ 11″
    Weight: 96 lbs
*Would be based on an ape and the concept of a boom box incorporated into its design.
Dex Entry: As if it were drums, this Pokemon beats its chest in order to store electricity. When it beats, a burst of sound waves are emanated, so it can beat its chest different ways to create different sounds. This makes them pretty popular at concerts. Constantly moving also helps keeping the electric flow from stopping.

    • We weren’t lying, we were being sarcastic. Its one of the worst chapters in the series, though the party member you get is objectively the best party member in the game without question. She has piercing damage which makes her a godsend.

      • Oh .-. Yeah it was awful. The music was not that great and having to go back and forth from toad town to the toy box was terrible.

Watt is nice though. I swear though everytime I defeat a boss I’m always right about to level up. I beat this one and I’m at 97 star points

        Reply
        • Yeah, the next chapter’s a bit better if I remember right. It has Yoshi’s if that helps.

And yeah Watt’s kind of adorable to me. Though she’s not my favorite in the series. That forever go’s to Vivian in TTYD and its mostly for reasons that Nintendo never probably intended.

          • Your telling me a Nintendo game in 2004 had a trans character omg I already love her. Oh I guess Birdo was sorta trans but they kinda retconned that which sucks?

          • Yes! It is canon that she is transgender, they only removed it in a few countries because the localization teams didn’t agree with it. But she is 100% Trans, no retcon was done

          • If we could get more of that in modern gaming I would be so happy. Yeah really hope the Switch has TTYD on Virtual Console or a remake or something because I really wanna play it. I’m really loving the N64 Paper Mario

          • Have you ever played Dragon Age: Inquisition? it is my favourite game ever, its on PS3 and PS4 and made by bioware, a canadian company. It has a similar feel to skyrim and other open world RPGs but in this game every story element is extremely rich and you have several same sex and opposite sex romances that you can pursue and omg the feels!!! But my point of it all was that there is this really strong and cool character named Krem and he is openly trans, and a bad ass warrior. You can even talk to him about it.

          • Well that’s kinda the case, but not really. It wasn’t so much that she was cannon trans and it was removed, as much as it was a happy accident. In the Japanese version there’s a scene where her sisters insult her and more or less said that she looks manish. Most localization teams realized that meant that she’s being insulted. that their saying shes ugly. One team, I think the Italian localization team, mistranslated that as her being a man and thus it became a debated cannon if she was a woman or if she was a transwoman.

However once people looked at the trans angle, the game has a bit of an interesting tone. Her sisters always call her a sister or a woman, implying that they have no trouble with being trans. People refer to her as female meaning that either can’t tell or their being polite. She openly expresses feelings to Mario, which could also make her one of the first gay characters depending on who you ask when it comes to sexual preference and trans, and her kinda putting aside her feelings for Mario at the end of the game so he can live a happy life with Peach could be because she realizes that Mario might not realize that she is trans and might not be attracted to that.

But yeah, her being Trans is more or less accepted as cannon, though I don’t think their’s ever been an official statement on it. More just a happy accident that people kinda liked.

          • … theres a lot about this that bothers me but I won’t say anything about it (its not even about Vivian being trans but other things) but I mean, I really don’t think it was an accident there are several moments in the games that kind of confirm it, sure nintendo themselves won’t say anything about it because they know how crazy people in other countries are and that they feel threatened by anything remotely out of the norm. But yeah pretty sure it was intentional, way more so than birdo, and everywhere I have looked has accepted it as canon and back it up with evidence and such.

          • At the same time though its very easy to read into things where none were intended. And I’m not saying the interpretation is wrong or anything. I like to think she is as well. I just meant that its more or less up for interpretation in the Japanese version and wasn’t made 100% clear. Only a couple of languages did outright say it, and most didn’t either not realizing what might have been intended or any other reason.

I just personally see it as something Like a Kanji from persona 4 situation where things are kinda vague, despite having a clear answer in the Japanese version, and in leaving it vague fans have kinda come up with their own interpretation, though its not nearly as agreed on as Vivian being trans. But again perhaps its better we just leave it aside. No matter the reason we both agree that the character’s great for many reasons.

  7. I plan to give 10 Pokemon a “Sort of” alolan form for my region… one I’m doing is Victini and I plan on making it Electric/???

      • I would like to know the logic behind these choices. Like some make sense like an eel being water, but some of them seem a bit extreme.

        Reply
        • Well some are sort of extreme, and I’m still thinking of explanations for a FEW
A few easier ones to explain are Accegor who is mainly adapting to become more ninja like in a grassy environment. It tends to use the nature around it to perform its tactics. For example, it can create a pseudo-smoke bomb out of just natural material. Bronzong is also easy in the fact that several dex entries for it mention it being, almost a rainbringer and I decided to build on that
Shiftry is flat out a strange exception because it is NOT natural. Shiftry was altered in general. Y’know that theory of Genesect being a Kabutops? I essentially applied a similar logic toward what regional Shiftry is.

          Reply
          • Ah interesting with Shiftry, though I would probably make its previous forms Steel though to kinda keep with the theme. Like saying it was an experiment years ago, but eventually some of them escaped into the wind and bred like bunnies to the point that their just common now or something.

Also with Accegor its a good explanation, though I personally would have probably let it keep a bug typing and then given it one of the other two. Like if dark saying that its become a bit of a dirty fighter and aims at sneak attacks, or using grass for the explanation you used. But good work so far.

Some other easy ones could be Goodra changing itself in order to protect Goomy, given how weak they are, and maybe cacturn being a victim of living in a land with so little water that it body petrified turning it into its current form?

          • Thats what I did for Shiftry’s line, but I’m deciding still if Nuzleaf should get flying
Accelgor is partially didn’t want another form and that I felt Grass/Dark would be a good fit

Goodra I decided would be like this, they ended up moving toward a volcanic area due to overpopulation of a certain other pokemon and began to take a rather muddy form. Being close to a volcanic area in my region, they began to adapt to the heat and.. well

I like that one for cacturne, but I’ll think on it

Mienshao is that classic “Trained in the mountains” story but it became Ice due to a combination of adaptation over many years and as a way to keep up with/hunt prey

        • Accelgor I explained below
Victini is due to the fact that it managed to fill itself with so much energy (Y’know, Victory energy) that it morphed into an electric type. Its flying part came from more adapted wings for flying at high speeds

          Reply
          • Accelgor’s change makes a lot of sense, and Victini’s is something that works very well with its backstory

          • Goodra and Excavalier’s typings are very different than what I was expecting, I’d like to hear their backstories too

          • Escavalier is the one I’m still thinking of an explanation for, but poison was inspired by Beedrill. Also it has levitate cause the dex states that it FLIES for some reason.

            Goodra is mentioned below

  9. I got some a few new regional variants (there will be about ten more later, but these are the ones I have so far):
    Starmie: Water/Ground
    Gengar: Fire/Dark
    Dragonair: Ice/Dragon
    Dragonite: Ice/Dragon

  10. Some sample abilities that will be included

Blood Guzzler: The Pokemon restores its own health upon using a contact move on its opponent. This effect decreases the lower its opponent’s health is. (Heals entirely at full and 10% at 1% health)
Example of a pokemon with this ability: Wompire

Overcharger: The user can use two turn moves in a single turn and does not to recharge. Instead, it takes 20% recoil damage.
Example of a pokemon with this ability: Drag00n, Porygon-Z

Rampage: The more a move is used in a row, the more damage it does. Upon hitting its damage cap it will confuse the user. If the user switches moves, this effect resets. (Increases in .5 intervals up to 2.5x)
Example of a pokemon with this ability: Primeape, Tauros
