RUMOR: 20 New Pokémon Added for Pokémon Stars

A week ago Laura Dale, a video game journalist, participated in a Reddit AMA (‘Ask Me Anything’) session for the Nintendo Switch in which she claimed that the Pokémon Sun and Moon follow-up, codenamed Pokémon Stars, could feature 20 new Pokémon.

This is notable as Dale has been involved in leaking other information about the Nintendo Switch which has been proven accurate. She mentions that another gaming writer (who unceremoniously announced Pokémon Stars on the release day of Sun & Moon) didn’t think the inclusion was likely.

Where this leaves us, the fans, isn’t known, but it does raise a question: will their be Nintendo Switch exclusive Pokémon? While we have always had new forms or event legendaries for titles within the same generation, content has never been locked away on a separate console. This could make some uncomfortable if they can’t catch ’em all without ponying up what is likely to be $300 for the Switch this spring.

A Nintendo Direct focusing on the new console is just a week away, so we could see the title announced with more details then.

  1. Oh if this is true then I’ll be hyped to get a third version instead of playing it and being like “ugh Im only doing this for the new forms of pokemon”

  2. The thing that bugs me, is why hide 20 Pokemon out of Sun and Moon’s datamine and put them in a third version? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Though it would bring the total of new mons up to 101 for this gen, that is if all of the Pokemon are newly introduced Pokemon.

  3. Does anyone know where the Switch rumors from today are? I keep seeing people talking about them on Twitter, but no one has linked

    • I’ve been following Game explain personally, though their largely getting it from peoples twitter. So far the big ones are that Breath of the Wild is a launch title, and Mother 3 is coming to the switch, which isn’t going to happen. That dreams is dead and long buried.

        • No worries. Though I’ll be the first to say I think their going a little to heavy with these rumors given that we’re all slowly setting ourselves up to getting upset when a lot of these rumors turn out to be false, like they usually do.

          • Idk many of the rumors are coming for people that have good track records. All the details might not be 100%, but I’d say anything that involves Eurogamer and Emily Rogers are likely to be mostly real.

          • Euro gamer maybe, but Emily Rogers has kinda lost a lot of her credibility over the years, one of her biggest messup’s being Mother 3 coming to the Wii U. I’m not saying that their all wrong, but their are cases where they might have bits and pieces of real info, but then make assumptions that turn out wrong.

          • True, but it’s possible Mother 3 was set to come to the Wii U, but got scrubbed for some reason. I won’t say that she is 100%, but it’s not like she could know everything change Nintendo will make. She only knows what she is told and if things change then it makes her look bad even tho she didn’t do anything.

          • That though again is one case of her information being wrong, and at the time it was very specific information, saying that it was going to be shown at E3, but I get what your saying. But at the same time I don’t feel she’s without blame. When people reveal these rumors from their sources their openly putting their necks on the line. They have to speak out saying they openly believe what their sources are telling them, and if their wrong, then they made a bad call trusting their sources. We’ll see in like ten-ish day’s how much of what has been rumored is true, and then we’ll likely see a lot of people turn against these leakers if they are proven false given the average person would think that you could verify the information with another source, or simply check in with them to make sure that the info’s still good. But again we’ll see soon enough.

  4. This Stars rumor made me realize that the Water Arcanine Rumour never came true, but the same rumor was correct on a lot of other things..

      • I know. And I really wanted Arcanine to get a mega or an Alolans since it’s one of my favourite Pokémon, but we got freaking Rainbow Muk and Diglett with hair instead

        Reply
        • not a fan of both design wise, but competitive wise A-Muk is a beast. A- Diglett is a flop that lost its only niche in competitve

          Reply
    • In my post below I said that maybe the rumors that got some parts correct and some part worng actually got them entirely correct. Maybe water Arcanine is actually in stars? lol

  5. I want this actually, it be new and different to see pokemon introduced after the first games, and it would give us reasons to be more hyped

    Reply
  6. Yeah, I don’t believe it, they’ve never done it before and they certainly not going to do it now. If anything they might introduce new Alolan forms (I want water snake Ekans and Arbok please)

    Reply
    • idk why people want stars on the switch AND 3ds it would be a waste of time to make the same game on two different devices

      Reply
        • look at hyrule legends, Yoshi wooly world even Super mario maker! all ported to handheld and they looked terrible compared to their HD counterparts. I say if pokemon goes on the switch it should just be there not on both

          Reply
    • Well two things: 1. Don’t assume that D/P remakes and Gen 8 would come to the switch since one of those isn’t confirmed and in general we really don’t know what Nintendo really plans to do with the switch. Assuming things its the quickest way to make an ass out of yourself in the future, and we’ll have to see how things go. If it does go that way, then the majority of us who are resistant will probably be on board, but at this point we really don’t know what to expect.

      2. I can’t speak for everyone, but honestly I don’t have high hopes of the switch being able to merge two markets, no matter how hard Nintendo tries to force them, since nobody(and please tell me of a case that has succeeded in the past) has really been able to do so before. Really if I were being super negative about it I would say that I see it appealing to people that want a good homecolsole from Nintendo, but it ulitimately being ignored by the handheld community, or at worse it crashing almost as bad as the Wii U given it might not be able to find a proper market, since even with the ease of porting people might still favor the PS4 or XBone, and the handheld market might simply say screw Nintendo for making them pay for a $300-400 for a box to play pokemon and inturn push dev’s to stay with the 3DS, or even urge Nintendo to make a new Handheld proper, which won’t really help the switch.

And I’m really not trying to be negative by any means. I want to see the switch succeed, but I feel like the closer we get to the reveal the more critical we have to be of the facts. That the last real attempt to make something similar to the switch(in terms of a high power handheld), being the Vita, backfired as dev’s really didn’t see much of a reason to make games for it since it either cost too much, or it wouldn’t really bring in enough money to make it worth it for them. The switch really won’t have troubles from a triple A dev in that sense, but the double A market might reject the machine. As well, we have further evidence of how hard it can be to merge markets with things like Super Mario Runner kinda doing less well then expected. Its doing ok in sales, but its probably far less then anyone would have guessed having a Mario game on mobile, with the general consensus being that the Mobile Market doesn’t want it, and those who are enjoying it being largely those of hardcore Nintendo fans and the usual handheld crowd.

And by all means please tell me why you don’t see these things are issues or concerns, or even how you think Nintendo could get around them. Because from where I’m standing 90% of people talking about the switch simply seem to be ignoring the concerns that people have; telling them to shut up or that they don’t matter, and others actually so have some valid points that do allow us who are concerned to see things from a different perspective. I want to get hyped and see this things as a huge success, but everything we’ve seen over the years seems to actively suggest that the Switch could either be a huge success, or a massive failure, and it all depends on who they try to appeal to and what market they go after.

    • So, you actually think it’s a good idea for Sun & Moon to be the only Gen 7 games for the 3DS? If that happens, I might actually not use Bank to transfer my Gen 6 mons cause I don’t want them stuck in such an incomplete game.

      Reply
        • But X & Y had ORAS to complement them, which is my point. If Sun & Moon are the only Gen 7 games (and the last overall) for the 3DS, they’ll be forever isolated.

          Reply
          • X an y had alot of things in complete especially story wise. I can agree with sun and moon too only because I expected them to finish up some stuff left unsaid in x and y but instead they just go hey here is zygarde -_-

          • You can breed to get non Alola Pokemon. An NPC tells you that in the game. I’m not sure how it works with cubone, egg and pikachu. But the ones that pop from eggs Forsyth have a chance

  7. I want ma Fire/Ice, Ice/Bug, Electric/Grass and Fire/Grass Pokemon!
As well as Normal/Ghost and Rock/Ghost.
I was very disappointed when Silvally transformed into pure types instead of preserving the Normal type as the first one. I thought it was going to bring us all the Normal/* combinations.

    A Normal/Ghost would rock: 3 inmunities, 1 weakness.
The Rock/Ghost could be a grave.

  8. I think 4 of the new Pokemon will be the Fossils, I mean some time would have passed since Sun and Moon, so maybe they excavated new fossils that are exclusive to Alola.

  9. New Pokemon introduced mid-generation is the correct direction for Pokemon to go in. It keeps the metagame fresh, prevents competitive battling from getting too stale.

I’ve been asking for this since BW, so if it does happen it would be a welcome.

  10. I came up with some fantastic ideas for Gen 8:
    a) Gen 8’s Cat Pokemon; based on Garfield. Its name would be Purrest. Type: Normal-Fairy

    b) Pokemon based on a flag, known as Drapooky. Type: Ghost-Flying

    c) Disco Insect Pokemon, name is Buggie. Type: Bug-Psychic.

    d) Pancake-Ghost Pokemon, known as Pancreep. Type; Ghost-Normal

    e) Wooly Crab Pokemon, known as Knitacean. (Type; Water-Grass)

    f) Maple Pokemon, known as Syren (Syrup + Siren). Type: Water

    g) Political Bird Pokemon, also known as Gauchirp and Droibird. (Gauchirp – Flying-Fairy, Droibird – Flying-Dark)

    • By the way a few of the ideas I got by listening to Moskau and Rasputin so if you see any political Pokemon, don’t blame it on me HEY!

      Reply
    • a) Alolan Persian Basically
      b) Unlikely
      c) Love to see that as long as it isn’t basically disco ledian
      d) What Alolan Raichu eats
      e) Maybe Crabrawler branch evo
      f) Should be a Grass/Water type with sap sipper.
      g) Don’t know bout that

          • Of course! I’ll have Jynx evolve into a Lasagna Pokemon! Sure it’ll be completely random, but we already have a fish = octopus, cotton candy dogs, flamingo death dancers, so why not a humanoid Pokemon into a human-ATE Pokemon?

    • A. Ask Nanu
B……….. Please don’t piss me off
      C. Please make it Bug electric and change the name, love the idea
      D. You done pissed me the F**K off
      E. Will it be slow with high attack and ass stats just like the real one?
      F. Are you okay in the head?
      G. I like to avoid politics
