RUMOR: 20 New Pokémon Added for Pokémon Stars

A week ago Laura Dale, a video game journalist, participated in a Reddit AMA (‘Ask Me Anything’) session for the Nintendo Switch in which she claimed that the Pokémon Sun and Moon follow-up, codenamed Pokémon Stars, could feature 20 new Pokémon.

This is notable as Dale has been involved in leaking other information about the Nintendo Switch which has been proven accurate. She mentions that another gaming writer (who unceremoniously announced Pokémon Stars on the release day of Sun & Moon) didn’t think the inclusion was likely.

Where this leaves us, the fans, isn’t known, but it does raise a question: will their be Nintendo Switch exclusive Pokémon? While we have always had new forms or event legendaries for titles within the same generation, content has never been locked away on a separate console. This could make some uncomfortable if they can’t catch ’em all without ponying up what is likely to be $300 for the Switch this spring.

A Nintendo Direct focusing on the new console is just a week away, so we could see the title announced with more details then.

      • exactly; literally nothing, that’s why Stars or anything else follow up to S/M won’t happen. Just pull S/M up in IDA and have a fun time seeing that S/M was planned ever since X/Y and actually, nothing else is.

        • Nothing except rumors from sources who have repeatedly proven their credibility. It’s not confirmed, of course, but it’s not something to just ignore.

          • Far from ignoring it, that’s why I had the thought of looking up things in the ROM. X/Y predicted OR/AS which then again predicted S/M by game origin values. Sadly, I can’t find the original source on that because the site was hacked, but two unused game origin values were in OR/AS and guess what, we got two more games. S/M got nothing more, they fill up those slots.
As for “Stars” to be Switch exclusive, different wireless communication make the games directly incompatible. Indirect compatibility, like Bank, would probably work, however there’s no reason they would ever do that.

          • They’ve only run out of numbers for the console-specific titles, that’s basically it. It’s not a perfect explanation, but gen 8 is the next step.

  1. If stars is real, then I HIGHLY doubt we’ll see it at Switchmas. It seems to close to SM’s release to be announcing a game that’s basically an enhanced version.

  2. I doubt there will be 20 new POKEMON in stars. Now 20 new FORMS yeah that’s a very good possibility. Very often in Japan when we get a new form for a Pokemon the Japanese promotion will call it a “brand new Pokemon!”. In the end it’s just a form. It’s likely the same kind of semantics here. I could very well see 20 new Alolan forms or even 20 new megas. They skipped megas for Sun and Moon to fully show off Z moves, but I don’t think megas are done for. I could see Stars being the start of Alola basically integrating what the rest of the world has more wholly. At the end of SuMo they had just gotten a Pokemon league and now Mega stones are making their way more wide spread into the region.Stars is definitely a real project if you ask me and I believe this person is also a reliable source as well. People can get things wrong while still being correct so I wanna say that what she said is at least partly true. Only time will tell, but that what I think lol

    • I can agree to this.remember spiky ear pichu? They hype that up very seriously around that time calling a new Pokemon and everything. I like the pichu but it didn’t deserve that much marketing even if a movie was coming out at that but,but like you said Japan tends to do that lol

  3. hmm… well it would be interesting. I just hope that it’s not the exact same game but now with 20+ new pokemon(if even that it’s probs just new forms or something), some dialogue changes or extra story would be nice.

    • Prolly won’t be. I wanna say one of the rumors from Eurogamer stated that the story would be more or less all new. I honestly don’t have any idea where the article they said that is now tho. I don’t think it was in their first article about the game, but in a subsequent one that featured rumors about a bunch of games. I could be wrong tho lol

  4. I would hope if i have to pay that much money for a whole to console to buy a pokemon game there would be way more than 20 pokemon

    • And as stated prior, Im pretty sure they’ve said new pokemon when they mean form change/ mega. And since megas and form changes have pokedex entries it could seen as a new pokemon. Still better be more than 20

  5. Earthen’s Demands for Stars (if not met severe repercussions are as followed)
-a better Story: have much more fights with opponents with fuller teams that can’t be easily shot down, Ultra Beasts actually destroying and causing harm,
-Ultra Space: lets face obvious facts it sucked, they should’ve made a whole distortion world puzzle gauntlet (and give Lusamine a frigging Nihilego)
-Much better leveling options, or at least make Chansey chainable or at the least some kinda easy grind
-more customization options, like more hats and backpacks,
-make IVs passable from Hyper Training
-Move Tutors and give Bewear Drain Punch
-friend safari return or customizable summer villa that you buy plants and furniture that attract Pokemon you can battle/catch

  6. This is so weird; not long ago, I stumbled upon a /vp/ thread that had an image of around 20 silhouettes, including potential Alola forms and fossil Pokemon. According to the posters, using reverse image search yielded no results, leading many to wonder where the image came from.

After so many curveballs were thrown at us during Sun and Moon, I’m willing to believe anything.

  7. Here’s an idea. So in the run up to SuMo many of the rumors we got that actually had real stuff ended up getting some small things wrong like not having Alolan forms in the actual game. What if the leakers from those rumors actually had general info and assumed the forms would be in SuMo, but those forms were actually being held off from Stars? So in stars we could see Alolan Arcanine, Alakazam, and Dodrio. What people think?

    Reply
    • Will we get that fighting type Arbok?

Though, I doubt we’ll get Alolan Alakazam, considering it already has a Mega and the vanilla Abra line is already in the Dex.

    • And the SS Anne!

That actually makes a ton of sense. I heard a rumor (I guess it’s a rumor) that GF was working simultaneously on SM and stars, and that a few months before release they stopped to focus on SM. It’s not that out of the question to think that the leakers may have had mixed info.

    • no more Aololan Forms, because of them i’ll never see my Mega Golem which becomes a spike boulder

and if we get more for god’s sake MAKE THEM PURELY ENVIRONMENTAL seriously the way they shoehorned BS reasons for changes

      Reply
        • i never said that, i’m saying make alola Forms actual environmental adaptations
so far the only ones that get a pass is Exeggutor, Ninetales and Snowslash (but i don’t agree on their secondary typing for the ice ones) and maybe Muk but only because i liked that they made it dark because of the chemical changes making its metabolism go haywire and causes it to violently eat everything in sight

but the rest are purely just reskins for lousy reasons,
Raticate living at night, Meowth being raised by royalty, Marowak becoming a Fire/Ghost type just because of Grass types (they still have water types to deal with too) and Diglett growing whiskers just to monitor above ground they’ve done that fine for years

          Reply
      • Agreed. I’d also like to see that. The idea of Alolan forms is so interesting. I’d love to see it spread to the other regional Pokémon

  10. Ehh, I’ve made my feelings in the Starts rumors enough so I won’t bog people down with that. All I’ll throw in this time is that their have been some questions of Laura Kate Dales credibility with her leaks, given she has back peddled on some of her initial claims when information that contradicted her claims came out. We’ll see sooner or later what stars is, if it even is a thing, though honestly I can’t see GF really thinking its a good idea to gate 20 pokemon behind a roughly $300-500 dollar price wall, and on hardware that hasn’t proven successful over the 3DS which has.

    • Well whether She is credible or not the rumors about Stars don’t originate from her so it really doesn’t matter. Imo stars is in fact a real project and will likely be announced by May of this year. And Like I’ve said I think the new Pokemon will likely just be new forms/megas. they’ve done game exclusive forms before and there isn’t anything stopping them from doing ti againlol

      Reply
      • True they have done exclusive form before, though I think its just a bit excessive in this case. Demanding that people buy the newest pokemon game to have the new forms is fairly reasonable, but demanding people buy a new console along with a new game and any other things that they’ll need is a bit of an extreme jump in my eyes. Then again I’m the person who doesn’t think that stars, if real, would be a main series game, so who knows really.

        • They have to move onto the system at some point. There is no difference between them putting a new gen on the Switch and putting up a new gen 7 game. From what we’ve heard Stars will be a new story. That coupled with the possible new Pokemon/forms/megas is more than enough. The idea that people shouldn’t have to buy a new system in order to play a game is not a new idea, but it certainly is a silly one. Eventually everyone will have to buy a Switch if they want to play the newest games. That’s how this industry works. lol

          Reply
          • Well yes, your right in one sense. If the switch is going to be the 3DS successor, then yes it has to be moved eventually, but the thing is Gamefreaks not usually the fastest to abandon old tech. Remember that gen five could have easily launched on the 3DS if they delayed the game in Japan, but they didn’t given the DS had far to many sales to take the gamble on some new tech that people might not buy into right away. The same can be said here. Before the holiday season the 3DS was sitting at about 60 million units sold, and that’s a pretty big market to cut out and assuming that everyone’s going to buy a switch at launch, and even then sales would still probably be less then putting it on the 3DS. What makes more sense is for them to eventually put it on the switch, but in a couple of years, after any shortages are taken care of, theirs a bulky enough library to justify the machine as more then a pokemon box, and Nintendo can meet the sudden demand, but again those are my opinions.

          • I will agree that GF is not typically one to jump to the next system right form the get go. I would say that’s partially due to their laziness tho. Back when they were developing gen 5 Iwata was making a push for them to develop a 3D game, but they basically said they wanted to stick to pixels as they were comfortable with them and didn’t want to do 3D. Iwata’s word obviously pushed them ultimately as gen 6 was in 3D. I would say that as times change they’re delay to the next system will become lesser and it’s very possible this time they are making the jump almost right away. As for staying on the 3DS I’d say that it’s over stayed it’s welcome at this point. I like the 3DS very much, but its tech is so outdated now. SuMo have pushed it to its limits and another game would be a waste on it. Each installment needs to offer something of an improvement, even just slightly. The 3DS really has nothing more to offer other than just being readily available.

          • True, and if you were only speaking on the OG 3DS, I’d agree, but we can’t denying there is that pretty big elephant in the room that is the New 3DS. The tech from that is still pretty good, and because of it you could see them getting another couple years out of the devise, at least in my mind, and because of it being a 1.5 device, their’s no need to not put it on the regular 3ds. it might run like crap on it, but as long as you allow it to and put a little tag on it saying best on the new 3ds, people really wouldn’t care.

But again time will tell with what we’ll see. Like I said I don’t think that Stars is going to be a main series game, much less a third version since they haven’t done one since Platinum. But we’ll see. Here’s to hoping what ever GF come up with turns out to be something successful.

        • but wouldn’t that be smart on their part? pokemon is going to sell no matter what and that will help push the console even more. I mean you don’t have to buy it, but nothing in life is free

          Reply
          • In a sense, yes, but you could also say that Mario sells no matter what, which it does to a degree. The problem in my eyes is that Nintendo just made a huge push with the 3DS this last year, still has a strong lineup of games on the horizon, and trying to release a main series game at a new consoles launch might leave people feeling burned, more so if it turns out that the switch really doesn’t work well as a handheld device, or worse, isn’t intended to be Nintendo’s main handheld device, but that’s getting into a whole different debate.

Generally for me it just feels like a lot of this is things that people want to hear and thus believe, but when looking to GF and how they’ve handled pokemon, it leaves me skeptical.
