Pokémon Mascot Showdown: Generation VI

Greetings everyone, here is another Mascot Pokémon Showdown. The winner of last time is Zekrom with 35%!
Now it’s time for Kalos. Generation VI released in 2013 with a worldwide release for the first time. This generation contained just two main games, namely X and Y, and featured some great new stuff like the Fairy-typing, Mega Evolution and trainer customization.

Pokémon X Version

Pokémon X showcased Xerneas, the Life Pokémon. It’s the first Fairy-type Legendary and is a stag-like creature shaped like an X. The horns on its head contain the colors of the rainbow and can grant someone eternal life. When it’s at the end of its own life, it transforms into a tree and sleeps for 1000 years.

There is no other Pokémon known than Xerneas that can learn the move Geomancy, making it the only Legendary Mascot whose signature move is a status move. It has the same stat distribution as Yveltal, but has the highest base stat total and Attack stat of all non-Mega Evolved Fairy-type Pokémon. Its name may come from the letter ‘X‘ and ‘cervus‘ (Latin for ‘deer’).

Pokémon Y Version

Pokémon Y featured Yveltal, the Destruction Pokémon. It is an avian Pokémon with the Dark/Flying type combo. Its wings and tail make the letter Y when fully extended. It has the power to absorb life energy. In contrast to Xerneas, Yveltal sucks all the life energy of every living thing around it when it is at the end of its life, creating a cocoon of itself so it can sleep for 1000 years.

Yveltal‘s signature move is called Oblivion Wing. It has the highest base HP stat of all Dark-type Pokémon and is actually also the only Dark-type Mascot Legendary Pokémon known yet. Its name possibly derives from the letter ‘Y‘, ‘yvel‘ (Middle English for ‘evil’) and ‘talon‘.

        • Eww.
If you’d said C# I would have jumped at it, but now I’m hesitant.
UnityScript is a poor knock-off of ECMAScript (i.e. JavaScript), which is bad because it’s duck-typed instead of having nice strict, static typing.

If you’ve got any particular issues I can have a look though. Logic issues and certain syntax issues are universal to all languages.

          • This is why I never attempt LD, the criteria is too restrictive unless you have everything planned in advance and a really good toolchain.

Like I say, any specific problems I can glance over, it shouldn’t be too hard, I know a lot of languages.

Also, when LD is over, start learning C#. UnityScript is proprietary muck, C# is far more widely used and more useful.

          • I can do fun:

            public static IEnumerable GetStandardDeck()
            {
            foreach (CardSuit suit in Enum.GetValues(typeof(CardSuit)))
            foreach (CardValue value in Enum.GetValues(typeof(CardValue)))
            yield return new Card(suit, value);
            }

            Yay language features.

          • I’ve been programming for at least 5 years now, so yeah, I know stuff 😛

Trust me, the learning curve is a real rollercoaster.

Basically this is using two enums (CardSuit, consisting of Spade, Heart, Club and Diamond; CardValue, consisting of Ace, Two to Ten, Jack, Queen and King), iterating through all their values and returning Cards that combine the two, sort of like producing the permutations.

Imagine it like a grid/table with Suits along one axis and Values along the other and the algorith is stepping though all the possible combinations to produce a full 52 card dex.

It’s written in an odd way because it uses special C# syntax to produce what’s called an ‘Enumerable’ which is an abstraction of a sequence of values (i.e. a list of items). Enumerables are special because unlike Lists or Arrays, the values aren’t always pre-computed. In this case, you can get the enumerable and only create the list of cards when you need to, by enumerating through the enumerable. This property is known as ‘lazy computation’ because it can avoid computing things until they’re definitely needed.

Side note, laziness is one of the three virtues:
            http://threevirtues.com/

I hope that was englightening and not overwhelming because I’ve just realised I take for granted how complicated that actually is XP

          • It depends on the data being used. Enumerables cannot be modified because they might not have storage behind them (i.e. an Array is an Enumerable, but so are certain functions, like the one I wrote there, so there’s no promises other than being able to go through a sequence of stuff in order).

If you want a list of stuff you can modify the values of, use a List or Array. If you’re processing a sequence of values, do enumerable stuff.

Sorry, got carried away. I like programming – such wonderful depth, and it all hooks up and works together like gears in a clock or an assembly line.

          • Final tip (lest I end up talking for another hour or two):
The best way to get ahead is to practise outside class and learn extra stuff or set yourself small challenges.

    • You need rain and a chain of SOS-ing.

Tbh you’d be better off IV breeding and then thief-ing a King’s Rock from Hariyama.

Train up something with Thief and Compoundeyes for max effect.
I used to use Galvantula but since they don’t live in Alola a Butterfree will suffice.

If anyone did anything dodgy it would look pretty bad for them when people found out so there’s both stick and carrot involved to keep people in line.

  1. Every time I try to settle down and do something in the game, I feel like I should be doing something else.
    I need to:
    – breed castforms
    – breed abra
    – finish my comp team
    – finish my gym team
    – finish the dex
    – grind BP
    – grind FC
    – find shiny Pikipek
    – find shiny Rowlet

    I’m so overwhelmed lol.

    • Ah, you’ve heard of the low-poly models and walk animations they have in the game files…

Have you also heard the special stuff about Lillie and Mohn’s models?

      Reply
        • They had slots for battle models.
Lillie’s was different indicating she should be battleable.
Mohn’s was a clone of his actual model, but it implies he was supposed to be battleable in some capacity.

          • Really hope Mohn gets more developed in Switch version assuming it’s true. It’s funny tho that Mohn ended up setting up exactly what the Aether Foundation was meant to do, create a haven for Pokemon.

          • It was probably his idea in the first place… unless…

Lusamine carried on Mohn’s UB research and Mohn carried on Lusamine’s conservation efforts. Weird.

Side note, there’s a lot of half finished families lying around.

            Hau’s father/Hala’s son…
            Acerola’s Father/Mother (since Nanu’s her uncle).

Got a feeling I heard something about Olivia having a relative but can’t find any evidence.

          • There’s so many questions I want answers to, but considering how they just passed over Kalos, I have serious doubts about any substantial answers coming lol.

Unless…they didn’t want a Johto syndrome to occur. They gave Kalos its own game, and they gave Alola its own game. Now in the Switch version you make a 2 region game….nah…I need to let that dream die xD

          • I’m more interested in Mohn and familial relations than I am any of the other stuff in terms of stuff needing closure (i.e. don’t care about Ultra Space).

I do think Aether Paradise seemed a bit light in the story though tbh, it only gets visited twice and the AF members only battle you at one point. Even though I knew AF was the real threat, by Po Town I was wishing Guzma would make a last minute comeback since Guzma and Plumeria had made more of an impression and their final fights were too weak.

I can live without Kalos 😛 too few areas of interest.

I’d rather they merge Sinnoh and Alola if they were going to attempt a dual region game again.

That or a new region and Alola together. Or Alola a few years on with more islands somehow, especially if it’s going on the Switch.

          • I have to agree with you on this. I too am more interested in Lusamine and Mohns story. I felt Lusamines character needs a lot more backstory to truly get a feel of the overall plot.

          • Yeah, we get her husband left, but from what they showed in the story she didn’t really feel very villainy because there wasn’t much interaction beforehand. She was good at the climax, but because she’d only been seen once before it didn’t feel as meaningful as Guzma/Plumeria because of their significant presence.

They should have had her slip slowly into madness over time so the player got to know her and slowly see she was evil. Instead what we got was as subtle as an iron bar. They also should have made her attempt a few more wormhole opening events that accidentally caused blackouts or released another UB that the player had to track down and battle.

Long story short, I think they had good ideas but fluffed the execution a bit.

          • All we know is she had an obsession with UBs and neglected her Children because of it. But we don’t really know much else.

And I actually like that idea of fighting more UBs during the story. You could get periodic calls from the Aether Foundation or something. Maybe even a worrying call from Wicke about Lusamine’s health for example.

          • We know she went off the rails when her husband, Professor Mohn, vanished into an Ultra Wormhole. We know she somehow dictated what the kids should wear and how they should behave. We just don’t know specifics. I’m presuming that might have been intentional so that people could assume things too graphic to show in the game or something.

As much as I don’t like the UBs I think it would have made more sense from a story perspective. I particularly like the idea of having to investigate the source of a Powercut, but that would probably only work well at night.
I would have thought more like Lusamine turning up to tell you in person (when Lillie isn’t around) about the incident, where she feigns concern really well, but after you defeat it and let it return to the wormhole she starts to get noticeably agitated for a moment before returning to feigning niceness. Kind of like the Happy Mask Salesman in Majora’s mask. And then maybe have Wicke slip you a note asking for help or looking worried or something (especially since they went out of their way to be able to animate the characters’ faces this time).

          • It’s one hell of an understatement though

It just doesn’t feel right to call it leaving when it involves extradimensional animals and sci-fi bs

          • Totally agree, I loved Lusamine by the end, but we’re first introduced to her in a way that has her come across as benevolent, although a little eccentric. Then suddenly we meet her again and she’s totally different. It makes sense in the way that she was just faking being good, but I would have also enjoyed seeing a bit more development in her slipping into madness.

          • She wasn’t really that benevolent in the first encounter tbh, she had an evil smile when the UB showed up. She hadn’t even been talking for long before that. She was practically a stranger.

          • By the end of it all I quite liked Plumeria, having the guts to appologise. Also for a villain-hero switch it seemed justified since she always cared about the grunts.

Wish Skull had more admins though.

          • I don’t like the chavviness of the hand waving or grafitti and the grunts are mostly meh, but their two leaders are interesting.

          • Yeah, I really want to get further info on Mohn and Lusamine and it’s so tragic really…we know Mohn and where he is, and we can never tell Lusamine or her children…

Aether Paradise was definitely light on story. You got there once, meet them, and then the next time it’s because they are bad.

It just bothers me that Kalos didn’t get the fleshed out game it deserved imo. But there are a lot of connections with Kalos and Alola so far. I guess the same can be said for Alola and Kanto, but Alola even has a Zygarde cave!! If they do do a follow up to Alola, I hope they don’t just put gyms into those empty plots…I’d rather a combination of gyms and totem battles.

          • That kinda falls down since any trainer who beat Kiawe should know about Mohn. For Lillie and Gladion to not know they must not meet a lot of people or not know their father’s name or something weird.

Yeah, it felt really weird. The idea of having a seemingly good team turn out bad is a good one, but they fluffed it but not making the player care about the team. They felt like a background force or a cameo for most of the game.

It didn’t, but tbh I think it would need more development to be interesting, a lot of the places were quite bland. Aside from the Chateau on the lake, the autumnal swamp path, the big tree town and maybe the central city, most of it felt quite bare or uninteresting. Especially when the main story leaves a massive hole in the ground.

I don’t care much for totem battles, I only found 2 of them to be challanging. One of them I actually took out the totem in one hit. Tbh I missed gyms more than I was expecting, the trials weren’t very challenging.

I think if they go back to gyms I think the best way to improve them would be to have them hidden away in hard to reach locations instead of having them smack in the middle of a town.

For example, have a grass gym hidden deep in a forest (like the Old Chateau was), have a Rock Gym deep within a cave, a Ground Gym deep within a dessert, a Flying gym up a Mountain, a Ghost gym in a graveyard/as a church, a water Gym actually underwater, a Fire gym atop a volcano (like Wela Park), a Dragon gym atop a tall tower, a Bug gym in rainforest on an island, a Dark gym in an abandonned city, et cetera et cetera

And maybe make the gym leader’s last pokemon have a totem boost or something, but without the SOS calling.

          • I’m the opposite, Kalos to me had a lot of varying places, it’s just there was nothing to do in many of them. Heck, I feel that way about Alola too. The golf course, the power plant, the hotel in HeaHea, and the Hano Grand Resort as well (seriously? 1 floor is all we get?), so many places that just seem to exist with nothing of substance to them.

I like how you said the main story leaves a massive hole in the ground…because it literally did lmfao xD

I would honestly love if Gym Leaders got a totem boost. I think that whole mechanic was great.

          • Eh, everything from beyond the aquarium up to and including the dessert was forgettable (except for maybe one cave). Everything after the big-tree town to victory road was also mostly forgettable, except maybe that forest and the pokemon haven.
Victory road was pretty decent to be fair.

Yeah, the golf course really annoys be because it’s on the map and actually visible right behind the wall near the Pyuku-guy. Heck, it’s signposted. And yeah, the hotels were horribly barren. And I was half expecting to get into the powerplant, but I guess that’s becoming a trope now.

I meant it literally, as opposed to being able Zygarde XP

I didn’t think it added much challenge tbh, I hardly noticed the boost in anything but the first and last totems. I’d rather have the levels adapt themselves to match your team so you’re forced to play strategy instead of trying to outlevel the other team. Or make all Pokemon temporarily a fixed level during gym battles, then add exp at the end.

          • I feel like the golf course was cut content for whatever reason. It takes up so much of the island for it not to be visited.
I’m the same in that I only noticed it in a couple fights, but anything and everything to up the difficulty is great in my book.

          • I’m thinking Kahili was supposed to be another captain, but they decided getting the Fly-crystal was too OP at that point or something (maybe because of Toucannon).

          • Keep that dream alive. Personally I hate half finished stories and im getting the same vibe from SuMo that I got from XY.

That there is more to it. Surely they have to tie things up

          • I’ve been getting an XY vibe too, but in things other than just the plot. The world seems to be full of model stuff but somehow feels like it’s laking grass patches and interesting things.

Maybe I’m imagining it but the tiled games felt like they had more stuff to interact with or more detail. I’m probably imagining it.

And knowing GF, they’ll probably end up leaving stuff open. They should have gone ahead with Z, now Zygarde is nothing but a mystery.

          • I actually know what you mean. When it comes to Grass the patches seem really awkward with the modelling (they are also placed such that they are very easily avoidable). Also surfing is so limited and fishing in specific spots doesn’t really work for me. Caves don’t even feel like caves.

          • Yeah, it feels like they crafted a world and the encounters were an afterthought. When I think back to locations in old games…

            G4’s Great Marsh… Sevii’s Berry Forest… Hoenn’s Route 119 (Weather institute etc)…

So many places full of grass and interesting things, somehow Alola feels a bit off. No idea why.

          • They reduced Zygarde to a fetch quest ;~; Here we have an amazing legendary with different forms and such high potential for an amazing plot surrounding it…and we get a collectathon.

          • Dexio even mentions this!! He says something along the lines of Zygarde is a Pokemon said to protect the Kalos region, I wonder why it is here in Alola? Perhaps it sensed an unbalance about to occur.

            And then it did nothing.

          • And not even a fun one. You should have to at least fight the cores or get a core detector or something. Time-locked cores are the real nail in the coffin.

          • I just have a hard time seeing them ever do a 2 region game again unless they are remaking GS/HGSS down the line. They are bent on this every region has to have something special about it, and Alola was the perfect storm to have a 2nd region, heck it had so much teasing to it! And after it didn’t happen, it’s just left a sour taste in my mouth.

          • I don’t know why they’re so reluctant to do it. I get that Kanto was originally only in GS because they used the same code and only slightly modified it and it was supposed to be the last game.

Alola would have done best with a 5th (arguably 6th or 7th) island given the amount of cloud and stuff. I’m not sure a 2nd region would have worked unless it was a new region. Hoenn could have worked, but they did the remakes instead.

          • Depends, it might have been Mohn that wanted to do the conservation stuff in the first place, I can’t remember.

    • I enjoy how the personalities of each Pokemon really comes out in their walking animations. Really hoping this will be on Switch….
