Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation IV

Greetings everyone, it is time again for the Mascot Pokémon Showdown! The winner of the last showdown was Rayquaza with a whooping 54%!
With this latest round we’ve finally arrived in Sinnoh. Introducing us to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Generation IV released in 2006 in Japan and to the rest of the world in 2007. Whatever your opinions of this generation, these games shook up the series and came with a lot of new features, like the physical-special split, gender differences and the Underground.

Pokémon Diamond Version1337px-diamond_en_boxart

On the cover of Pokémon Diamond is Dialga, the Temporal Pokémon. A big, blue, dinosaur-like creature with lots of metal on its body, it perfectly fits its Dragon/Steel typing. Using the diamond in the center of its chest plate, Dialga has complete control over time – it can speed it up, slow it down or stop it altogether. It lives in a completely different dimension, which is why people don’t get to study it.

Dialga is the only known Pokémon that can learn Roar of Time. No Pokémon has the same type combination and it’s the tallest Pokémon introduced in this generation. Its name may derive from ‘diamond‘, ‘dial‘ and ‘dragon‘.

Pokémon Pearl Version

1338px-pearl_en_boxartPalkia, the Spatial Pokémon, was featured on Pokémon Pearl’s cover. A lilac theropod-shaped Pokémon with pearls in its shoulder plates, Palkia is said to deform space and it can even create alternate realities. Like Dialga, it lives in a different dimension.

There is no other known Pokémon other than Palkia that knows Spacial Rend. Its name probably comes from ‘pāru’, meaning pearl in Japanese.

Pokémon Platinum Versionplatinum_en_boxart

Pokémon Platinum featured Giratina, the Renegade Pokémon. With its two forms, the Altered Form and the Origin Form, it is the last member of the creation trio of Sinnoh. Giratina is able to travel through the dimensions created by Dialga and Palkia. It resides in its own world, called the Distortion World.

Giratina‘s signature move is a Ghost-type move called Shadow Force. It has the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon and the highest HP stat of all Legendary and Dragon Pokémon. Its name comes from ‘girasol‘ (‘a red opal’), ‘guillotine‘ or ‘girare‘ (Italian for ‘to wander around’) and ‘purachina‘ (プラチナ, Japanese for ‘platinum’).

  1. 3 questions about Anabel

Y she’s no longer psychic specialist?

Y she grow up while Wally is not and both of them from Hoenn?

    Y she is damin cute?

  2. Dazzling Requiem now presents

    Sinnoh Confirmed!

    1) Island Scans: Can be used to obtain the Unova and Johto Starters. Hoenn, Kalos and Kanto starters are all available easily on 3DS due to XYORAS. Alola Starters are obviously there. So, all starters sans Johto and Unova are forced on you on 3DS at some point, whereas Johto and Unova are easily accessed due to ORAS and XYORAS.

The only starters not repeated or mandatory on 3DS? Sinnoh!

Also, Sinnoh has the least Pokémon in Island Scans not counting cross Gen evos, and even with them has the least Pokémon there out of any games that can realistically be remade this Gen (basically itself and Kanto)

    2) Team Skull: Use blue and pinkish/purple in their backgrounds.

    3) PokéDex: Sinnoh has the least amount of Pokémon in the Alola Dex out of all realistically to be remade Gens, and the least overall all if you only count original Sinnoh lines (no cross Gen evos)

    4) Silvally with its RKS System, pallets changes and type changing signature moves, and its inhibitor helmet is obviously based off of Arceus

    5) Arceus got a buff to Multitype, it now works with Z-Crystals along with plates (but Crystals don’t change the type of Judgement)

Spoilers on the Null/Silvally Origin Story

    6) Its creators went to Canalave City Library for research

    Spoilers on Ultra Beasts

    7) They’re extradimensional Pokémon, just like the Creation Trio and Arceus. Are these Pokémon also Ultra Beasts of some sort?

Huge spoilers on plot and certain characters

    8) Lusamine and Cyrus are opposites. Lusamine’s love drives her to her limits, whereas Cyrus’ lack of it leads to his ambition. Lusamine is content on having a world to herself, Cyrus wants to force his world on others. Lusamine gladly goes to another world, Cyrus is forced there.

Following on from the Eighth point, so huge spoilers

    9) Lusamine and Cyrus have their climactic battles in an other dimension after previously fighting them in their bases.

    10) Munchlax, a Sinnoh Pokémon, is being distributed similar to Torchic last Gen (noted by Ithsme)

        • Wait but like, gens 1-5 still had to happen because Red and Blue, Cynthia referencing Giratina and Dawn/Lucas in Black and White, the grunt from G/S/C settling down in B/W, and Colress being referenced in Gen 6

          Reply
          • Yes they all appeared to have happened, but likely happened with slight divergences and bigger differences such as a lack of Mega Evolution and Infinity Energy

          • They did happen, but in different universes. Basically the events in both universes are largely the same, but the key difference was in one universe mega evolution was created, and in another it wasn’t. This then meant that events played out largely the same, but small differences did occur. Like Archie having a mega pokemon, or team plasma researching something similar to mega evolution despite having no idea how to access its power.

          • It’s a bit convoluted.
Gens 1-5 still happened with the same events, but just with mega evolution.
Meaning this Red and this Blue aren’t the same as the ones in RBY/HGSS/BW2, just a counterpart where the only difference is mega evolution.

          • I hate it so much.
It’s clear that the whole story of generation 6 and the “ultimate weapon” thing wasn’t planned out well.

Why couldn’t they have just added mega evolution without splitting off the timeline? They didn’t need to at all.

          • I mean not really

Added story potential and explains why Megas weren’t in past games

Also it’d be dumb if they didn’t do it seeing as we have time and space travelling Pokémon

          • They could’ve just said it was recently discovered or recently made possible to use. Maybe only certain people could get ahold of it hence why Steven would have it years before

          • The thing is though they wanted it to be an ancient technique for story purposes

As well as the fact that there’s still the point that it allows way more creative freedom which is good for content creators

    • Two timelines

Mega Timeline (AZ fires his weapon successfully, which creates Mega Evolution and ends the war, leads to the discovery of Infinity Energy and advances technology faster)

Original Timeline (AZ doesn’t successfully fire the weapon and doesn’t create Mega Evolution or lead to the discovery of Infinity Energy)

They both follow the same rough Timeline, it seems

      Kanto/Hoenn > Johto and Kanto/Sinnoh > Unova > Unova/Kalos > Alola

For example, Red and Blue in these games will of came from the Mega version of Kanto

  4. So do we know yet if Vulpix and Ninetales are exclusive to Sun or Moon, cause I gotta work my teams out depending on what version they are on… I don’t like trades Pokémon on my team…

  5. They seriously just need to pull a Zelda and create an official timeline. Regardless of the fact that, like Zelda, they were never technically made with a timeline in mind. And regardless of your feelings towards the quality of the Zelda timeline, it’s nice having it.

    Reply
          • I’m aware. I’m saying I don’t think it’s as simple as saying Gens 1 – 5 are one universe and Gens 6 & 7 are another. To me it makes more sense that:
            Universe A:
            Red + Blue = RSE
            GSC = DPP
            BW
            B2W2

            Universe B:
            FRLG = ORAS
            HGSS = DP remakes
            BW remake
            B2W2 remake = XY
            SuMo

          • What’s infinity energy?
And if we’re pointing out shit that makes no since then ORAS has Megas in the same timeline that Kalos doesn’t discover it till 6ish years later. So why can’t Kanto and Sinnoh also just be behind the times?

          • Kalos didn’t ‘just discover’ it though, they’ve had it for thousands of years, as did Hoenn.

Infinity Energy is life force energy and its why the Mega Evolution universe can open wormholes to dispose of meteors whilst the Original universe couldn’t

          • You haven’t played XY recently then homie. Sure it existed, but half the plot revolves around player character confirming it’s real.

          • If you really think that’s what the plot is, pot kettle black.

It’s not confirming its real at all

It’s studying and getting more info on it, why would you need to prove its real when Sycamore (literally studies it) literally gives you a Mega Stone and Shalour has a whole a tower dedicated to it? It’s just that most people don’t see it first hand, but multiple characters know it exists but don’t have much knowledge on it

            Hence why you’re studying it

          • Nope, because the divergence point is Infinity Energy and Mega Evolution

Which only two of those game pairs have

They’re just referring to the rough series of events in each timeline

  6. Some cute Sinnoh-Alola ties that are probably just coincidences for different reasons

    1) Cynthia’s name refers to the moon, and Cyrus’ refers to the sun. This is only a coincidence however, as their Japanese names don’t refer them.

    2) Diamond Head and Pearl Harbour are real places in Hawaii. However, they are most likely just coincidences due to them probably not picking a whole region on a small reference. Funnily enough, both are on Oahu, the basis for the starting island, Melemele (which seems to reference DH and PH through Ten Carat Hill and Hau’oli Marina)

  7. Sorry Dialga. I like your design and typing, but you’re just not as cool as the grumpy Cthulhu beast from the messed up flipside dimension.

  8. – Generation 1 to 5: follows and creates a plausible and fairly substantiated timeline
    – Generation 6 to 7: introduce Infinity Energy, AZOTH, Ultra Beasts, Mega-Evolution, alchemy, and multi-dimensions, multi-universes, and parallel universes
    – Mega Universe: OR/AS Hoenn, X/Y Kalos, Alola, and remake of Sinnoh (it’s coming)
    – Original Universe: R/B/G up to B2/W2
    – Parallel Universes would explain the remakes and some remakes fall under the non-Mega Evolution universe and some under the Mega Evolution universe

  9. I have to go with Palkia
    I like the design
It’s cry is very appropriate while Dialga sounds like a T. rex baby getting its tail in the car door
Also pearl was my first Pokemon game I religiously checked online sites for information
    I checked Serebii everyday since

  13. So I kinda missed out on the whole UB-05 Gluttony
I have to say it’s one of my favorites
I like the idea of this grotesque maw constantly devouring everything in its path, and apparently nobody knows what happens to the matter it consumes

    • It’s just literally too much. The whole thing is going to be incredible. But:
      Kickass, weirdass story
      Trainers in battles
      Raichu-A
      Palossand
More post-game than people are willing to give it credit for

      • The post game is above average for a first game of the generation. It’s nothing spectacular, but it’s definitely more than we’ve been accustomed to for this type of game.

      – The music (okay, I’ve spoiled all of it for myself, but it just means so much more and sounds so much better when I have memories of the game paired with it)
      – (I was going to say the story, but that sounds too cliche for my already bland list) Battle royales – I can’t wait to play a bunch of battle royales here! 😀

      ………….Mudsdale

      Now what I DON’T like
-we now entered the era of small regions and filler Pokemon
      -No hordes to EV train
-Hyper Training not allowing us to make 6iv Dittos for breeding
      -extremely one sided Pokemon
      -Breaking Tradition
-too many fairies and water types
      -poorly designed Pokemon
-Alolan Forms which was a excuse to make new Pokemon
-they’re making it hard to find HA
      – they botched the stats of ALOT of pokes
-lastly, they didn’t give Mudsdale Bulk Up

      Reply
      • 1. The region is definitely not small; it’s large by pokemon standards.
        2. They needed to break tradition to keep things fresh
        3. Yeah there’s too many fairies and water types (but at least water types have an excuse)

But everyone’s entitled to their own opinion lol.

        • By region I meant Dex
But if they could have that many of one type there’s no bloody excuse that others don’t get their fair share

          Reply
          • Oh. That’s true, but I can’t blame them for three reasons.
            1. They’re getting close to 1000, which personally I don’t see a problem with, but something many people want to avoid for some odd reason.
            2. I’d prefer they have smaller new pokemon numbers and add an array of new features to have fun with, which is what SM did.
            3. A lot of new pokemon have more than 1 form, making them essentially more than 1 pokemon.

          • I thought that we were in for a large number of new pokemon generation as well, but there’s nothing I can do about it, so I prefer to just look at the bright side of things lol.

          • Well that only distracts you until life nips you in the testicles and reminds you how shitty things truly are

      • Alolan forms only make up 10 different fully evolved Pokémon. ASSUMING they each took the place of 1 “unique” Pokémon, you really weren’t robbed of much.

        Reply
      • -Tf is a ‘filler Pokémon’, and how is Alola small
-Hordes were already laggy with six models, try seven. Also, SOS Chains and Festival Plaza are alternatives, one being friendlier to framerate and the other giving you the boosts instantly. Also Poképelago
-If you could get 6 IV Ditto that easily whats the point of IVs in the first place
-What does one sided even mean?
        -Fair enough, subjective.
-You mean a mystical region with a ton of water has a ton of mystical and watery Pokémon? Shocking.
        -Subjective
-Easily could’ve been an attempt to buff up an already small Dex
-Something called a ‘Hidden Ability’ is rare? 😮
-They’re trying to make the Meta less speed based (trying being the key word)
-Probably because of how annoying it’d be for the thing to be able to boost its Defense when it already does that every time it gets hit

        Reply
      • – They’re definitely following a trend of smaller regions and fewer new Pokémon, which does suck a little.
        – Gonna miss hordes
        – I don’t mind breaking tradition. Keeps things fresh 🙂
        – Yeah, too many fairies and water types. Water I can understand, though, because it’s basically Hawaii.
        – Disagree on the Pokémon designs. Only a small handful of them disappoint me.
        – Stats aren’t everything. Movepools, abilities, typing and items also have to be taken into consideration before writing off a Pokémon as competitively useless.

        Reply
          • That’s my cue.

“Weak pokemon. Strong pokemon. Truly skilled trainers simply try to win with their favorites.”
            – Karen, 2010

          • Oh right a Ledian can take out UB-05 Gluttony
Oh it’s ok it’s a bug type and it’s a dark type it should win hands down

          • Formats: PU
            Overview

Ledian is totally outclassed and cannot merit a slot on any serious team, as Meowstic and Ninjask do everything that Ledian can better defensively and offensively, respectively. It has terrible offensive stats, which nullifies its large offensive movepool, and a shallow support movepool, along with poor defenses and a 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, making it absolutely worthless on any team.

          • I use so many lower-tier Pokémon in OU and UU and do quite well with them. Kecleon, Sudowoodo and Electrode are just a few.

          • Because of their stats
            Sudowoodu because of its defense
Kecleon has protein which gives more numbers to its attacks
And Electrode of its off the charts speed

          • So you admit that Kecleon is good because of its ability 😉 But on top of that, it also has an insane move pool to support its incredible ability, and a great item (Assault Vest) to support its already-great Special Defense.

Yes, stats are crucial. But they’re not the sole factor of a Pokémon’s competitive viability.

          • That’s why every number counts
Even though my brain forbids math of any kind Pokemon is literally all math
Every attack does a numerical amount of damage and it constantly weighs every factor down to the last number

So like in most scenarios it boils down to the golden rule
            Biggest. Dick. Wins.

    • Singles, Doubles, and Multi I believe.
Question: can you play multi battles with only CPUs or can you play with a friend through local/online multiplayer? O.o

      Reply
        • Yes!! I’ve never done that, but my brother is getting a lot more into pokemon so I’d love to be able to play in the battle tree with him.

          Reply
          • If the Tree is as tough as the Maison rather than the Tree facility from W2, good luck. I had to use a CPU partner to beat Super Multi. My friend and I simply weren’t good enough together and we were using some solid Pokémon.

          • The AI multi ally trainers in ORAS were trash though, compared to what we could randomly get in XY (my favorite teammate was a beast: Sharpedo+Landorus).

Archie was pretty decent, but he couldn’t hold a candle to that trainer. Obviously it was harder for me to beat the Multi with Archie… but Archie was still pretty good. 😉

          • I didn’t think so when I used him, so I picked Archie. Ok, ok I mainly used Archie as bait. But at least both his glass cannons wreck stuff, I even get to use Follow Me and it is worth it.

Steven’s main problem is that Aerodactyl dies way too fast (even compared to the aforementioned non-mega Sharpedo for some reason) and deals lower damage than I would want, plus using Fake Out to stun one opponent doesn’t even save it some of the time… it feels like a 3 on 4 when I use Steven, even if his Metagross is such a beast. 🙂

  14. In the book of Book of Revelation, sightings of angels, disasters, and of legends and monsters rising are all sure-tale signs of the end to come. In the movies, Arceus has stated his wish to restart the world anew without humans and Pokemon who obey humans and their wishes (I know this is NOT canon whatsoever to the games, but is just an additional thought). With Sun/Moon and the 7 Ultra Beasts, they could be a metaphorical reference to the 7 Angels who bring the last of the 7 Plagues. For the past few games, Pokemon has been delving deeper and deeper into interrogating these little nuances and slowly building upon them with each game. I don’t think Sun and Moon are the, “It all comes together” games, but rather the remakes of Diamond and Pearl. With how rich and lore-infested Sinnoh is, it wouldn’t surprise me if the awakening of the Primal deities, the events of Sun and Moon with the 7 Ultra Beasts, and OR/AS Project AZOTH and X/Y’s tap into Infinity Energy began a chain reaction ultimately ending in God’s wrath or Arceus’ wrath being put upon his creations. But hey, that’s just a theory- joking. 😛
