Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation IV

Greetings everyone, it is time again for the Mascot Pokémon Showdown! The winner of the last showdown was Rayquaza with a whooping 54%!
With this latest round we’ve finally arrived in Sinnoh. Introducing us to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Generation IV released in 2006 in Japan and to the rest of the world in 2007. Whatever your opinions of this generation, these games shook up the series and came with a lot of new features, like the physical-special split, gender differences and the Underground.

Pokémon Diamond Version1337px-diamond_en_boxart

On the cover of Pokémon Diamond is Dialga, the Temporal Pokémon. A big, blue, dinosaur-like creature with lots of metal on its body, it perfectly fits its Dragon/Steel typing. Using the diamond in the center of its chest plate, Dialga has complete control over time – it can speed it up, slow it down or stop it altogether. It lives in a completely different dimension, which is why people don’t get to study it.

Dialga is the only known Pokémon that can learn Roar of Time. No Pokémon has the same type combination and it’s the tallest Pokémon introduced in this generation. Its name may derive from ‘diamond‘, ‘dial‘ and ‘dragon‘.

Pokémon Pearl Version

1338px-pearl_en_boxartPalkia, the Spatial Pokémon, was featured on Pokémon Pearl’s cover. A lilac theropod-shaped Pokémon with pearls in its shoulder plates, Palkia is said to deform space and it can even create alternate realities. Like Dialga, it lives in a different dimension.

There is no other known Pokémon other than Palkia that knows Spacial Rend. Its name probably comes from ‘pāru’, meaning pearl in Japanese.

Pokémon Platinum Versionplatinum_en_boxart

Pokémon Platinum featured Giratina, the Renegade Pokémon. With its two forms, the Altered Form and the Origin Form, it is the last member of the creation trio of Sinnoh. Giratina is able to travel through the dimensions created by Dialga and Palkia. It resides in its own world, called the Distortion World.

Giratina‘s signature move is a Ghost-type move called Shadow Force. It has the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon and the highest HP stat of all Legendary and Dragon Pokémon. Its name comes from ‘girasol‘ (‘a red opal’), ‘guillotine‘ or ‘girare‘ (Italian for ‘to wander around’) and ‘purachina‘ (プラチナ, Japanese for ‘platinum’).

  1. (technically) Seven Ultra beasts
    One is named Gluttony
Anyone who believes the seven deadly sin representation theory of the beasts is gonna have fun

      • Basically

        1) I’ve been cleaning all weekend so my room looks like I’d taken things with me when they were in black bags

        2) My wardrobe was nearly empty, because I’d been throwing clothes into black bags (side note: so glad I’m getting money this week to go clothes and shoe shopping)

        3) I was at my cousins but forgot to take my phone charger, so when my phone ran out and she rang me to ask where I was I seemed unresponsive

  2. All 3 are wonderful Pokemon with amazing designs, I ended up voting for Dialga though I was tempted to vote Palkia tbh the main reason is because Pearl was my first game of 4th gen and usually the mascots on the games I start with they’re normally the ones I lean towards more, doesn’t mean I like the others any less this one just speaks out to me more

  3. I wonder how the Gen 5 Mascots will turn out with Zekrom, Reshiram, and the two Kyurem forms. I personally really like Zekrom and Dragon/Electric is such a cool typing. Out of Gen 4 I went with Giratina simply since I like its design the most and also it’s typing is neato.

  4. To the people who know everything about the games: how many hours of gameplay do we have? (not counting post-game). And is there a good post-game? (no spoileeers)

  5. Can anyone do me a really high favour and answer any of these questions?

    1) What do all the Pikachu hats do?
    2) When can we use the QR to find non-Alolan Pokémon?
    3) Do we have a list of QR Pokémon?

  6. I just had a thought: what Pokemon game do you think will release in 2017? I don’t think we’ll have another off year, even though it could definitely happen, but at the same time I don’t know what we’d get. As much as I’d love them, it seems a tad early for DP remakes, so my honest guess is a 3rd/3rd and 4th sequels to SM.

  7. Just noticed

    Gen IV-10 Year Anniversary
    Gen VII-20 Year Anniversary

If we get remakes, then it really is a double celebration of Pokémon’s history. It’s also cool as Sinnoh was the end of an era (regions in the same country, Pokémon models weren’t animated, some of Pokémon’s biggest changes happened after it) whilst Gen VII is a culmination of ideas

Also, can’t wait to hear people’s Gen IV Confirmed evidence, there’s already one huge piece called Silvally

    • Here’s an interesting one.
      ————–
XY gifted Torchic (a hoenn Pokemon) to players for the first few months.
The same generation we got hoenn remakes
SM is gifting munchlax (a sinnoh Pokemon) to players for the first few months.
I’m sure you can connect the dots.
      xD

    • I’m about 99% sure Sinnoh remakes are happening, I’m just not sure when they’re happening, or even when I want them to happen. If they were announced next year for the 3DS I’d lose my shit…however that would mean they’d be on a piece of hardware that’s already seeming a bit dated, and might run the risk of being forgotten quickly when the new hardware comes up – like poor BW2. However the hungry fangirl part of me doesn’t wanna wait years for them to show up on a new console 🙁

        • I don’t mean by the fanbase, I meant by Nintendo and Gamefreak. BW2 were released to a Japanese audience during summer, and and the rest of the world got them in October. Then in January, BAM, XY announced, and all attention focused to the upcoming generation of games on the new hardware. They had roughly 6 months in the prime spotlight – that was it. Online support for BW2 also really did not last long before the older servers were taken down. They were a beautiful swan song for the DS, but a swan song nonetheless.

          • There was still a year between them though, just like nearly ever other Pokémon game. For example, HGSS and BW

  8. Honestly I feel…
    Electric needs more physical attacks
    Ice needs an entire rework
Ghost needs to beat something different than what dark beats
    Steel needs more special attacks

  9. ….in hindsight… it should have been obvious that Z wasn’t coming but rather gen 7… there were a lot more hints than I realized…

    • Yea they’ll be allowed in VGC though we don’t technically know all isn’t allowed yet. But my guess is none of the following:
      Solgaleo & Lunaala (confirmed)
      Zygarde (confirmed?)
      Psychic-type black diamond thing
      Magearna (confirmed)
      Marshadow
