Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation IV

Greetings everyone, it is time again for the Mascot Pokémon Showdown! The winner of the last showdown was Rayquaza with a whooping 54%!
With this latest round we’ve finally arrived in Sinnoh. Introducing us to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Generation IV released in 2006 in Japan and to the rest of the world in 2007. Whatever your opinions of this generation, these games shook up the series and came with a lot of new features, like the physical-special split, gender differences and the Underground.

Pokémon Diamond Version1337px-diamond_en_boxart

On the cover of Pokémon Diamond is Dialga, the Temporal Pokémon. A big, blue, dinosaur-like creature with lots of metal on its body, it perfectly fits its Dragon/Steel typing. Using the diamond in the center of its chest plate, Dialga has complete control over time – it can speed it up, slow it down or stop it altogether. It lives in a completely different dimension, which is why people don’t get to study it.

Dialga is the only known Pokémon that can learn Roar of Time. No Pokémon has the same type combination and it’s the tallest Pokémon introduced in this generation. Its name may derive from ‘diamond‘, ‘dial‘ and ‘dragon‘.

Pokémon Pearl Version

1338px-pearl_en_boxartPalkia, the Spatial Pokémon, was featured on Pokémon Pearl’s cover. A lilac theropod-shaped Pokémon with pearls in its shoulder plates, Palkia is said to deform space and it can even create alternate realities. Like Dialga, it lives in a different dimension.

There is no other known Pokémon other than Palkia that knows Spacial Rend. Its name probably comes from ‘pāru’, meaning pearl in Japanese.

Pokémon Platinum Versionplatinum_en_boxart

Pokémon Platinum featured Giratina, the Renegade Pokémon. With its two forms, the Altered Form and the Origin Form, it is the last member of the creation trio of Sinnoh. Giratina is able to travel through the dimensions created by Dialga and Palkia. It resides in its own world, called the Distortion World.

Giratina‘s signature move is a Ghost-type move called Shadow Force. It has the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon and the highest HP stat of all Legendary and Dragon Pokémon. Its name comes from ‘girasol‘ (‘a red opal’), ‘guillotine‘ or ‘girare‘ (Italian for ‘to wander around’) and ‘purachina‘ (プラチナ, Japanese for ‘platinum’).

  1. Gotta be my boy Dialga.

    Dragon/Steel
    Complete control over time itself…
    Looks absolutely amazing
Did I mention Dragon/Steel. If only Kommo-o got that typing.

If only it had a better ability and signature move. Really got shafted compared to Palkias Spacial Rend

  2. lol i love how collectively everyone doesn’t like Palkia.

Did anybody else have those special Diamond and Pearl DS styluses from pre-ordering the games at Target? The ones that had Dialga and Palkia as toppers? Because those were one of the coolest pre-order bonuses I ever got my hands on, but I lost them somewhere, somehow. 🙁

    • Damn. No love for Palkia. :/ I personally prefered it over Dialga. But hands down Giratina is my favorite of the trio. My thoughts are. Fuck time. Control over space means i can MAKE WORMHOLES! Well perhaps not that but i personally see the benefits of Both. Not as keen on Dialga cus… Butt crown and Pope hat head? They just looked like… weird Design Choices to me… To me… Palkia looks like a Sleek Dragon that you could SEE moving through the Water. I’ll admit its shoulder pad things look wonkey as hell but I like the rest of it.

    • I have the dialga one! But I haven’t seen it in a while :/ I’m not sure if I lost it or have simply stored it with my figures, but I’m pretty sure it’s the latter. Hope you find yours!

  3. Did anyone REALLY think the Ghost Dragon wasn’t going to win, I mean, I went to my mom who knows NOTHING about Pokemon and when I said “Time Dragon, Space Dragon, and Ghost Dragon” she went, “Ooooooo Ghost Dragon!”

See what I mean, you can’t beat something that sounds cool like “Ghost Dragon”

      • Thank you for pointing out my mistake of saying Dark Matter instead of Anti-matter.

        While
that was what Cynthia said in the Game. it has been Postulated that she
doesn’t know everything about the Legendary Trio. Also if Giratina DID
actually Represent Anti-matter. The Distortion would would have exploded
when the character entered, and Giratina would have destroyed the
pokemon world when coming into contact with the air around it in the
Anime. In the Distortion world All the land masses seem to have their
own Gravity, even the Water. And yes i got this from a youtube video on
the subject and Frankly… It all makes more sense that Giratina would
be the pokemon of Gravity as opposed to Anti-matter. If Anti-matter had a
Quality known for warping Time and Space like Gravity does rather then
making Matter it comes in contact with Cease to be in a SPECTACULARLY
Destructive show of force… Then i would consider Giratina the pokemon
of Anti-matter. But as it stands it seems more likely to me that
Giratina is the pokemon of Gravity. That is my own personal theory based on evidence provided by said youtube video. Its up to you to think what you want.

  4. Its probably pretty obvious that my vote goes to Dialga given my love for steel, but honestly what clenches it for me is the fact that it was the only one of the three that ever acted friendly towards Ash in the Anime Movies. Like the other two probably tolerated Ash or ignored him, but Dialga actively knew that Ash was his side, which I always thought was kinda cool.

  5. Sense as of now Giratina has won 54% of the votes and Rayquaza won with 54% of the votes, who do you think is the better legendary? Rayquaza or Giratina.

    • Giratina is really cool in that it is a stop to Extreme Speed Arceus. Also one of the few Pokemon to get Defog in Ubers. However Gen 6 was not kind to it as both Xerneas and Yveltal beat it easily.

Dialga has the advantage of have an amazing defensive typing (Steel makes it neutral to Ice, Dragon and Fairy), with crazy attack potential. Also gets Rocks.

Palkia is in my opinion the weakest. It’s main use was to counter Kyogre before Kyogre got the biggest nerf ever called Primal Groudon.

  6. Wait, wait…Pokemon with abilities like storm drain or water absorb are immune to Primarina water perish song…This means they could make an interesting combo.
