Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation II

Today I’m bringing you a new Cover Pokémon Showdown. Perhaps rather unsurprisingly, Charizard won Generation One with 37% of the total votes!
Now it’s time to move onto Johto.

Generation II came out in 1999 in Japan and featured three games, namely Gold, Silver and Crystal. This generation introduced many new features such as Shiny Pokémon and the Dark and Steel type.

Pokémon Gold featured Ho-Oh, the Rainbow Pokémon. Ho-Oh is often named the “guardian of the skies”.

Ho-oh is a bird-like Pokémon which resembles a phoenix, leaving a beautiful rainbow behind when it flies. It has a mythical power to resurrect the dead, which can be seen in one of the episodes of Pokémon Generations.

Its signature move is Sacred Fire, a strong damage-dealing move. Ho-oh was the first Generation II Pokémon that was seen in the anime, which was a sign that the franchise would continue after Generation I. Its name comes from ‘Hōō‘ (鳳凰), the Chinese word for phoenix.

Pokémon Silver Version

silver_en_boxartPokémon Silver showed Lugia, the Diving Pokémon, on its cover. It is often referred to as the “guardian of the seas”. It’s also the trio master of the Legendary birds.

Lugia is a Pokémon that is able to control the weather, especially cause and stop storms. Because it knows it has that power, it hides itself underwater to prevent itself rising storms.

Its signature move is Aeroblast. Ho-oh and Lugia are the only Legendary mascot Pokémon that are not seen clashing with each other in the anime. Its name may come from ‘lutetium‘ (a silver element), ‘lugeo‘ (‘I lie dormant’ in Latin) or ‘luna‘ (‘moon’ in Latin).

Pokémon Crystal Version

Pokémon Crystal covered Suicune, the Aurora Pokémon. Suicune 500px-crystal_en_boxart
is the only Legendary beast to appear on a box art.

Suicune has the power to purify water with one touch. It travels the land searching for water to purify.

It is thought to be based on the Qilin, an Eastern legend that has traits of Chinese dragons, unicorns, deer and big cats. Its mane, however is said to resemble the northern aurora. Suicunes name is derived from ‘sui‘ (水, water) and ‘kun‘ (君, monarch).

  3. Guys the weirdest thing happened today. At school we were discussing political issues, so my teacher gave a short presentation on tolerance of opinions, as we were about to have a debate. And suddenly out of nowhere, he used a slide to display Meowth’s quote from the Pokemon movie. xD

I bet I was the only one who knew where it was from at first (he rightfully credited meowth at the end).

      • I think you misunderstood what I said. In the Pokemon Adventures Manga. But I clearly said “Yellow Red” as in, Red from the Game Pokemon Yellow. Nowhere did I mention Yellow from the Manga.
Ritchie from the anime, is based on Red from the Game Pokemon Yellow, who is based on Ash from the Anime, who is based on Red from the games Pokemon Red,Green & Blue.

  4. Alright, let’s be honest here: these next few days me be VERY interesting in terms of leaks. IIRC it was around two weeks in advance that a few people got XY early, so IMO it won’t be too long before we’ll start seeing actual leaks.

    • I kind of hope there aren’t early release leaks. With XY we didn’t have the Pokemon that weren’t released, but this time we’re going in with the full dex. All that’s really left is story stuff and that’s a no no for pre release. Would rather not have that kind of stuff spoiled. So unless I can get it early I don’t want none of that hahaha

  5. I’ve always wanted the Pokémon Company to comission an animated short every year of the VGC finals reimagined into an anime battle.

  6. I hate that so many people who use all legendary teams forfeit or disconnect when they know they are going to lose to my team with 0 legends… they are the scum of the online pokemon community tbh

    • Especially on Showdown, they use legends even though most of the ones I run into use shitty moves, or I overpower them with strategies (Like Guts Swellow, that thing wrecks everything)

    • Omg I hate that. One time, I beat this kid on XY online. His team was all legends and his starter greninja. Mine was some experimental IV bred team I was testing out. Then he kept on trying to voice chat with me (I know I should have went offline after like the 5th time) and I finally answered. He was like WOOOOW YOU’RE SO GOOD I’M 13 HOW OLD ARE YOU. I believe I was either 21/22 at the time? Then he says EW YOU’RE OLD. WHY ARE YOU STILL PLAYING POKEMON. I told him I have been playing Pokemon before he was even born and he said “…I know :(” and hung up.

      Anyway, children are awful.

  7. With the pre-downloading now available, I want to say that if it gets hacked then I’m leaving until I get the game myself. Seeing the Pokemon was fine, but I don’t want anything else spoiled. I’ll miss you guys, but I really don’t want to be spoiled like I was the weeks prior to XY.

    • I like how unique it sounds. It sounds so unlike anything we’ve heard from SM so far, so I like that about it (not that SM music is bad, but I just like how different it sounds. Plus it’s comforting knowing there’ll be a little more variety).

      • I agree, it’s very unique compared to other route I’ve heard. It also gives off a Golf Course vibe while on vacation for an odd reason lol

  8. I want to use a Porygon-Z for my SM run but at the same time, I dont want to waste the dubious disc on a non competitive porygon-z. Competitive Pokemon Problems

  9. If this was, sadly, all the pokemon we are getting in SM, that would mean that a whopping 18/82 pokemon are legendary/ultra beasts (which TBH I believe will act like legends, being unbreedable and powerful). That’s a solid 21% of the new pokemon, that’s huge.
