Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation II

Today I’m bringing you a new Cover Pokémon Showdown. Perhaps rather unsurprisingly, Charizard won Generation One with 37% of the total votes!
Now it’s time to move onto Johto.

Generation II came out in 1999 in Japan and featured three games, namely Gold, Silver and Crystal. This generation introduced many new features such as Shiny Pokémon and the Dark and Steel type.

Pokémon Gold Versiongold_en_boxart

Pokémon Gold featured Ho-Oh, the Rainbow Pokémon. Ho-Oh is often named the “guardian of the skies”.

Ho-oh is a bird-like Pokémon which resembles a phoenix, leaving a beautiful rainbow behind when it flies. It has a mythical power to resurrect the dead, which can be seen in one of the episodes of Pokémon Generations.

Its signature move is Sacred Fire, a strong damage-dealing move. Ho-oh was the first Generation II Pokémon that was seen in the anime, which was a sign that the franchise would continue after Generation I. Its name comes from ‘Hōō‘ (鳳凰), the Chinese word for phoenix.

Pokémon Silver Version

silver_en_boxartPokémon Silver showed Lugia, the Diving Pokémon, on its cover. It is often referred to as the “guardian of the seas”. It’s also the trio master of the Legendary birds.

Lugia is a Pokémon that is able to control the weather, especially cause and stop storms. Because it knows it has that power, it hides itself underwater to prevent itself rising storms.

Its signature move is Aeroblast. Ho-oh and Lugia are the only Legendary mascot Pokémon that are not seen clashing with each other in the anime. Its name may come from ‘lutetium‘ (a silver element), ‘lugeo‘ (‘I lie dormant’ in Latin) or ‘luna‘ (‘moon’ in Latin).

Pokémon Crystal Version

Pokémon Crystal covered Suicune, the Aurora Pokémon. Suicune 500px-crystal_en_boxart
is the only Legendary beast to appear on a box art.

Suicune has the power to purify water with one touch. It travels the land searching for water to purify.

It is thought to be based on the Qilin, an Eastern legend that has traits of Chinese dragons, unicorns, deer and big cats. Its mane, however is said to resemble the northern aurora. Suicunes name is derived from ‘sui‘ (水, water) and ‘kun‘ (君, monarch).

  1. Oh, how I love Gen II. There are just so many reasons why:

    – 100 Pokémon, in my opinion, is the perfect amount. Not too few and not too many. It also helps that I love almost every single one.
    – I love the Johto region and all its music.
    – The one game (aside from HG/SS obviously) where you can travel between regions. That always made Gold and Silver extra special.
    – Ho-Oh and Lugia are tied with Xerneas and Yveltal for my favorite box legendaries. Though I like Ho-Oh a little more.
    – Between the Unown ruins, the dragon’s den, and everything in Ecruteak City, I love the history and lor of the Johto region.
    – Team Rocket returning. One thing I love about Rocket is that they don’t have any doomsday schemes. They’re just crooks that need to be taken down. The legendaries don’t even have anything to do with their plot line!
    – It introduced so many great mechanics like egg hatching, day/night cycle, and held items.
    – While not Gen II, HG/SS are hands-down my favorite Pokémon remakes. They were done so well.
    – The theme song for Pokémon Johto always stood out to me. Even today, it’s one of the only Pokémon theme songs that isn’t trying to be epic or serious. It’s just happy and fun!

So yeah, Johto will always have a special place in my heart.

  2. Lugia any day! Movie 2 is my favorite, it was actually the first movie I saw and Lugia made a big impact on me. It looked so majestic and powerful. Then I found out it is actually a defensive-oriented pokémon in the games but anyway it’s still my 3rd favorite pokémon.

  3. So I’m considering completely scrapping the idea of a theme team in SuMo and just use everything I see until I whittle down a final six

Too much good options, especially if Pikipek’s evo is Dark/Flying, Sea Urchin2 is Poison/Steel, and Spider is any combination of Bug, Dark and Ice)

  4. Somethings wrong with my version of the Demo. The days until certain events haven’t lowered since I moved my Time Settings back an hour on sunday, the pikachu man still says it’s 4 days away, despite it supposed to have happened on Sunday. Is anyone else having this issue?

  6. So I wanted to get some feedback
How many are going digital or physical

Because my hypersensitive ego is gnawing at my hippocampus saying that people who digitally preload the game will get a major head start to playing compared to those who want physical copies

  7. I voted for Lugia because I’ve always preferred it especially after seeing the movie 2000 although its a pretty tough choice since they’re all amazing Pokemon with great designs

  8. Totally by accident… but just discovered that you can sort comments by newest and oldest rather than most popular and I feel like an idiot but I’m also very happy.

  9. I still do not understand why is Gold Silver Crystal and Diamond Pearl and Platinum when technically it should be Gold Silver Platinum and Diamond Pearl Crystal

  10. I hate how anime didn’t focus on Ho-oh one of best legendary in my opinion not just cuz it’s phoenix and fire type with majestic design but cuz ecruteak city and tin tower them when u enter Tin(I like temples) and solve the puzzles while go uphill u really can sense there is a big deal here u know u will face legendary pkmn before see it, I know it’s not popular cuz it still didn’t appear in any movie but u still can feel how majestic it is watch from 8:48 to 11:00. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNQEGCwxRpE
