Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation II

Today I’m bringing you a new Cover Pokémon Showdown. Perhaps rather unsurprisingly, Charizard won Generation One with 37% of the total votes!
Now it’s time to move onto Johto.

Generation II came out in 1999 in Japan and featured three games, namely Gold, Silver and Crystal. This generation introduced many new features such as Shiny Pokémon and the Dark and Steel type.

Pokémon Gold Versiongold_en_boxart

Pokémon Gold featured Ho-Oh, the Rainbow Pokémon. Ho-Oh is often named the “guardian of the skies”.

Ho-oh is a bird-like Pokémon which resembles a phoenix, leaving a beautiful rainbow behind when it flies. It has a mythical power to resurrect the dead, which can be seen in one of the episodes of Pokémon Generations.

Its signature move is Sacred Fire, a strong damage-dealing move. Ho-oh was the first Generation II Pokémon that was seen in the anime, which was a sign that the franchise would continue after Generation I. Its name comes from ‘Hōō‘ (鳳凰), the Chinese word for phoenix.

Pokémon Silver Version

silver_en_boxartPokémon Silver showed Lugia, the Diving Pokémon, on its cover. It is often referred to as the “guardian of the seas”. It’s also the trio master of the Legendary birds.

Lugia is a Pokémon that is able to control the weather, especially cause and stop storms. Because it knows it has that power, it hides itself underwater to prevent itself rising storms.

Its signature move is Aeroblast. Ho-oh and Lugia are the only Legendary mascot Pokémon that are not seen clashing with each other in the anime. Its name may come from ‘lutetium‘ (a silver element), ‘lugeo‘ (‘I lie dormant’ in Latin) or ‘luna‘ (‘moon’ in Latin).

Pokémon Crystal Version

Pokémon Crystal covered Suicune, the Aurora Pokémon. Suicune 500px-crystal_en_boxart
is the only Legendary beast to appear on a box art.

Suicune has the power to purify water with one touch. It travels the land searching for water to purify.

It is thought to be based on the Qilin, an Eastern legend that has traits of Chinese dragons, unicorns, deer and big cats. Its mane, however is said to resemble the northern aurora. Suicunes name is derived from ‘sui‘ (水, water) and ‘kun‘ (君, monarch).

  1. It’s time for me to call it a night. I had fun with you all this evening, I hope it stays this busy and interesting for the next couple of weeks (and hopefully past that). Night!

  2. Dartrix’s actual potential base HP range (based on a single trailer because I couldn’t find any others) is [42, 90]

    The HP formula is floor((2*BaseStat + IV + floor(EV/4) * Level) / 100) + Level + 10

    Dartrix’s HP at Lvl 28 is 88

    88 – 10 = 78
    78 – Level = 50
    50 * 100 = 5000
    5000 / 28 = 178.57142857142857142857142857143

    Meaning 2*BaseStat + IV + floor(EV/4) = 178.57142857142857142857142857143

    Best case scenario, IV and EV are both 0, meaning BaseStat is
    178.57142857142857142857142857143 / 2 = 89.285714285714285714285714285715
    Or [89, 90]

    Worst case scenario, IV is 31, EV is 252:
    178.57142857142857142857142857143 – 31 = 147.57142857142857142857142857143
    147.57142857142857142857142857143 – (252/4) = 84.57142857142857142857142857143
    84.57142857142857142857142857143 / 2 = 42.285714285714285714285714285715
    Or [42, 43]

    Thus the actual HP range for Dartrix is [42, 90]

    But even if we knew the IVs and the EVs, there would still be imprecision due to the one-way nature of the flooring operation.

    • Made a little haskell program to demonstrate:

      — Code Begins
      reverseHP hp lvl ev iv = result
      where
      phase1 = fromIntegral (hp – 10 – lvl)
      phase2 = phase1 * 100
      phase3 = phase2 / (fromIntegral lvl)
      phase4 = phase3 – (fromIntegral ((ev `div` 4) + iv))
      result = phase4 / 2.0

      reverseHPBestWorst hp lvl = ((reverseHP hp lvl 252 31), (reverseHP hp lvl 0 0))

      rangePair (x, y) = (floor x, ceiling y)

      main = print $ rangePair $ (reverseHPBestWorst 88 28)
      — Code Ends

      • We saw Rowlet having 23 hp at level 5, 50 hp at level 15 and 47 HP at level 16. We know that rowlet has 67-68 base HP. I don’t see any reason why Dartrix should have less then Rowlet.

        Reply
        • Actually that gives Rowlet a range of between 36 and 66.

          23 hp at level 5 results in a range of [33, 80]
          50 hp at level 15 results in a range of [36, 84]
          47 hp at level 16 results in a range of [18, 66]

  3. Normally I don’t post so quickly, but I just found out they’re planning a major update to Animal Crossing New Leaf.

  4. So Doctor Strange was really good! I personally wouldn’t rank it in the top tier of Marvel movies, but definitely 2nd best tier. Worth a gander for the visuals alone. Cumberbatch will be a good replacement for RDJ as the big man on campus going into the 2020s.

      • Haha I liked that they made it like Aladdin’s carpet. Intriguing idea.

        The trippy visuals were a lot of fun. And the mid-credits scene was hysterical. Felt more like the Thor from the “What Thor Was Doing During Civil War” than Thor from the movies.

        • You can view the main page of Pokejungle. You can then stay off the internet the moment you see an article that says: “(country) gets early copies” or “Spoilers: pokemon sun and moon story leaked”.

          Otherwise I would think it’s safe to hang around.

          The leak would probably be even earlier than the NA/JP release date.

  7. I think the most disappointing thing about the new games is that Solrock and Lunatone will not get mega evolutions.
