Mascot Pokémon Showdown: Generation II

Today I’m bringing you a new Cover Pokémon Showdown. Perhaps rather unsurprisingly, Charizard won Generation One with 37% of the total votes!
Now it’s time to move onto Johto.

Generation II came out in 1999 in Japan and featured three games, namely Gold, Silver and Crystal. This generation introduced many new features such as Shiny Pokémon and the Dark and Steel type.

Pokémon Gold Versiongold_en_boxart

Pokémon Gold featured Ho-Oh, the Rainbow Pokémon. Ho-Oh is often named the “guardian of the skies”.

Ho-oh is a bird-like Pokémon which resembles a phoenix, leaving a beautiful rainbow behind when it flies. It has a mythical power to resurrect the dead, which can be seen in one of the episodes of Pokémon Generations.

Its signature move is Sacred Fire, a strong damage-dealing move. Ho-oh was the first Generation II Pokémon that was seen in the anime, which was a sign that the franchise would continue after Generation I. Its name comes from ‘Hōō‘ (鳳凰), the Chinese word for phoenix.

Pokémon Silver Version

silver_en_boxartPokémon Silver showed Lugia, the Diving Pokémon, on its cover. It is often referred to as the “guardian of the seas”. It’s also the trio master of the Legendary birds.

Lugia is a Pokémon that is able to control the weather, especially cause and stop storms. Because it knows it has that power, it hides itself underwater to prevent itself rising storms.

Its signature move is Aeroblast. Ho-oh and Lugia are the only Legendary mascot Pokémon that are not seen clashing with each other in the anime. Its name may come from ‘lutetium‘ (a silver element), ‘lugeo‘ (‘I lie dormant’ in Latin) or ‘luna‘ (‘moon’ in Latin).

Pokémon Crystal Version

Pokémon Crystal covered Suicune, the Aurora Pokémon. Suicune 500px-crystal_en_boxart
is the only Legendary beast to appear on a box art.

Suicune has the power to purify water with one touch. It travels the land searching for water to purify.

It is thought to be based on the Qilin, an Eastern legend that has traits of Chinese dragons, unicorns, deer and big cats. Its mane, however is said to resemble the northern aurora. Suicunes name is derived from ‘sui‘ (水, water) and ‘kun‘ (君, monarch).

  2. I already filed my leave from work on 11/18. Since there are no midnight releases here, I will have to settle for store opening time.

I will be there at a backwater shop 1 hour before, so I will be the first to buy it, then I will walk to the more popular and easily accessible store 2 blocks away at another mall, and parade the game in the faces of the people who are in the long lines, and revel in their misery.

I did this during X&Y and ORAS launch, and I’m gonna pull it off again.

      • Good luck with that! I can also optionally cosplay as Hoenn version Ash complete with Pokeball… (I’m ooooooold it might be creepy, but that’s kinda the point.)

        • The issue for me (if I did that) would be that I couldn’t even get my hands on the games until 7:30 that night which is too long to wait (sorry europe).

          • I know, I’m gonna have a hard time sleeping that night before I go in the morning. I dunno how I’m going to survive

          • I’m going to have a hard time sleeping the night that I just went to the midnight release as well. Knowing I have the game, physically in my hands, after months of waiting, and having to go to sleep instead will be horrible. xD

          • Truuuueee, either way, sleep will be hard for all of us….unless you just pull an all-nighter xD
But I think that would be hard for me, considering I’ll have to wait hours doing nothing while people have the game and the time would just go so slow

          • I feel for you.

I would pull an all-nighter, if I were given the choice, but I have school the next day and I need to function properly (contrary to many of my classmates, I’m not very capable of functioning well the next day on a bad night’s sleep.

  3. Has anyone here ever had a mangosteen (the fruit Bounsweet is based upon)?
I found a mangosteen scented air freshener last week and thought, “Ooh, I bet this will smell like Alola!” but it was by far the worst scent I have ever had to endure. It smelled like a dead skunk. I want to know if it was just a bad air freshener or if the fruit is gross as well.

  4. On Smogon Forum People has calculated the hp stats of starters:

Rowlet: 68 HP (considered as the most convincing)
    Dartrix: 74-91
    Litten: 39-45
    Torracat: 64-74
    Incineroar: 83-98
    Popplio: 49-53
    Brionne: 49-61

Well Primarina seems to be the one with less Hp. Why Gf, she is the wall one, you know?

      • I don’t want Primarina to be a sweeper, she is too cool for that and we had Greninja last gen. I don’t want the water starter to become the new fire starter (always the same). I want my wall and my fear is that those HP points went to attack, which she does not need.

        Reply
        • Ah better not attack, nooooo!

Well if you need any consolation about low HP, Sableye and Dusclops, have low HP totals and these are some of the most annoying and toughest supports. To a lesser extent even Pachirisu and Meowstic-M.

Also fragile support Pokemon like Liepard exist… -_-

    • How about we wait until we have the games so we can be absolutely sure on stats and what they role they are good at?
Sure, there are guesses, but that’s just it, GUESSES. Just wait.

      Reply
      • Not guesses, sorry. The HP stats of Starters will be in that range, cause they calculeted with 0 iv, max iv, 0 IV and max ev, max iv and max ev. So there’s no way the HP are not between those.

        • Okay, but you still won’t know for certain until the games are out. You also don’t know what each starter gets for moves and what not. Maybe Primarina doesn’t get any wall/support moves and is offensive. You won’t know that until the games come out.
Plus, as far as I can tell with comp, you can do whatever set you want to do with any mon, sure some are stupid or not as good, but you can make it work.

          • Listen, unless GF hacked the HP stats in all the trailers, at least the HP of the starters will be among those ranges. There’s a scientific way to calculate stats, so no way. I know we need stats and all, it’s just annoying the way GF gives HP base stat without any sense.

          • You can only infer the stats if you also know the IVs and EVs as well.

You can determine a range, but it would be a wide range.

          • In fact they took those stats and calculeted the range considering 0 iv-0 ev and max iv-max-ev. Those are the ranges. When the ranges are smaller is because we had deifferent stats for the same pokemon in different trailers. The only way they are different is because GF hacked the pokemon.

          • I crunched the numbers and came up with a [42, 90] range for Dartrix based on a lvl 28 having 88 HP as shown in the Japanese version of the alolan Muk trailer.

          • I mean, this is the same company that tried to stop datamining in the demo somewhat, so who knows?
Regardless, I just think it’s too soon to freak out about comp value of Pokemon just knowing potential stats. You also need moves and whatnot.

          • The fact is that in each gen there’s always a starter with less then 80 HP. With Darteix already having more then 74 (so Decisueye probably more then 100) and Incineroar having more then 80, Primarine (if things go like in the past) is the one who should have around 70. I know this means nothing. It’s just something that could have helped her.

    • Tbh I sometimes think GF just roll the dice when making stats, or just look at the Pokemon, make some stats up, and don’t attempt to balance them or anything.
