Underneath the Mask: The Mystery of Silvally

Type: Null and its evolution Silvally are odd Pokémon, and I don’t just mean their chimera-like designs. Ever since Type: Null was first released, folks speculated that it might receive an alternate Form without its mask, but I don’t think anyone expected that it would evolve. I doubt anyone was imagining such a weird way of evolving either — most Pokémon transform into a bigger, stronger and tougher-looking version of themselves when they evolve, or they just turn into more than one of themselves (no offense to Magneton, Dugtrio or Vanilluxe). When Type: Null evolves into Silvally, its head and tail turn from gray to white and it loses the helmet, and that’s about it. But there could be a different reason why this evolution happens the way it does: character development.

Even when Type: Null was first revealed, we knew it had been created by humans, joining a short list of manmade Pokémon that includes the Porygon line, Mewtwo, Genesect and Magearna. According to the Pokémon Sun and Moon Official Website, it “was constructed to synthesize the strengths of various Pokémon, enabling it to adapt to any situation.” The website also says that Type: Null was created to be “powerful enough to rival those Pokémon often spoken of in mythology” in order “to complete a certain mission.” Since Type: Null is a Normal-type that combines aspects of multiple types in its design, and because part of its mask somewhat resembles the ring around Arceus’ middle, plenty of Pokémon fans figured that this Pokémon spoken of in mythology was Arceus.

Upon evolution, Silvally gains even more similarities to Arceus. Its RKS System ability has the same effect as Arceus’ Multitype, the Memory hold items work the same way as Arceus’ plates, and the move Multi-Attack changes type in the same way Judgement does (or Techno Blast, for that matter).

But why would someone create a miniature Arceus?

According to Silvally’s page on the Official Website, it “is said to have been created in order to oppose a threat.” What in Alola is seen as a threat to humans and Pokémon? Ultra Beasts. It’s not officially revealed who made Silvally, but my money’s on the Aether Foundation. For one thing, they seem to be the only organization in Alola with the necessary knowledge and resources to create a mini-Arceus, and for another, they’re researching the Ultra Beasts. If this really is the case, somebody in the Aether Foundation must have decided that only a Pokémon with the adaptability of Arceus could prove strong enough to defeat the Ultra Beasts, but it proved impossible to find and capture an Arceus, so they decided to make their own.

However, Silvally’s wild nature made it impossible to command, so they fitted it with a mask in order to control it, and it became Type: Null. In terms of game mechanics, I suppose this would count as a devolution, similar to how some of Slowking’s Pokédex entries say that Slowking will revert back to Slowpoke if the Shellder is removed from its head. In terms of story speculation, it seems as if the ends are being used to justify the means — the Ultra Beasts must be defeated, so controlling a Pokémon with technology and treating it as a nameless, faceless weapon to use against the Ultra Beasts seems like a viable strategy.

I imagine that Gladion probably stole his Type: Null from the Aether Foundation, and it seems likely that he himself might have defected from the Aether Foundation at that time. I expect that at some point during the story of Pokémon Sun and Moon, the player will receive his or her own Type: Null from someone at the Aether Foundation. The Official Website says that Type: Null evolves into Silvally when it “gains a partner it can trust.” I’m not sure whether that means it evolves through Happiness or through the Pokémon Refresh feature like Sylveon and Pokémon Amie, but it establishes something new within the Pokémon video games: a Pokémon with a character arc. Many Pokémon in the anime have character arcs as they learn and grow with their Trainers, but in the games, that was mainly left up to the player’s imagination.

Type: Null was created to be a weapon with one purpose: to destroy the Ultra Beasts. However, a Trainer who sees beyond that and values Type: Null for itself rather than its power will be able to earn its trust. When that happens, it will tear off its mask and regain its true strength. It’s almost as if Mewtwo in the anime evolved when he turned on Team Rocket and destroyed their base, or when he realized that the gift of life has value for natural Pokémon, cloned Pokémon and humans alike. From the look of things, Sun and Moon just might have the best-written story in the series (although in my opinion, they would have to surpass Black and White in order to accomplish that), but we won’t know for certain until next month.

  1. I just thought of something: I could name a Rockruff “GoodPoi” or even “WhosAGoodPoi”. Except for punctuation it sounds pretty cool. xD

  2. Maybe the “Baby forms” are just forms of the legendaries trapped or whatever? And then maybe you have to do a ritual to release their power. Wait. ALL THREE LEGENDS HAVE THREE FORMS. Zygarde 10%, 50%, and 100%. Lunala and Solgaleo both have the minis, themselves, and their Full moon/ Radiant sun forms.

  3. If you could have 1 Pokemon from each gen (Only 1 Starter, 1 Legendary and 1 Mythical Allowed but you don’t need to have them except the starter), which 6 would you choose, out of the 721 we have now?

  4. So I’ve decide my next little project in the run up to Sun and Moon is to complete a living dex. I already have the majority of gen 1 and gen 2 done. Gonna start working on gen 3 next. It’ll be more about organization rather than actually completing the dex as I’ve already completed the National dex technically. I’ll only have to breed a little here and evolve there. should be more tedious that actually hard lol

    • I need to complete the pokedex. I’m not so sure about a living dex, but catching all the pokemon and having all their data in the dex would be great. I would also like mythicals in there, but I haven’t participated in the distribution this year. I just don’t have the patience for a living dex. Poke’tuber aDrive is trying to complete a shiny living dex.

      • Oh god a shiny living dex……….I can’t even imagine…..I have to admit the aspect of shiny hunting has lost its……..shine………*sigh* After a year and a half of shiny hunting and getting a reasonable amount I think I’ve worn myself out. I don’t have the patience anymore and I feel like I’ve gotten bored. I still like the idea, but my mindset won’t let me get into it anymore…..I think I just need a long break. Maybe after I beat Sun/Moon I’ll get back into it and have a new found energy to do it lol

          • Nah I like what they’ve got now. Dexnav is what really got me into Shiny hunting. lol If it weren’t for it I would only have the one Quagsire I randomly ran into in X as a prize. Well that and the shiny Pokemon they give out as events, but I don’t count them really lol

          • but there’s no more of that jolt, shock, and awe at finding a shiny anymore. when you rant into a legit one before, this feeling of panic and desire came up, you weren’t prepared, you have to do everything in your power to capture it. that’s all lost now that they are pretty much guaranteed.

          • heck yeah a completely random one is still pretty valuable. that’s a 1/2000ish chance, way more unlikely than the 1/200 ish ones otherwise, or the promised ones from chain fishing.

          • finding shinies still take time tho. I still get excited and surprised when I find one. Even if it’s one that I’ve been hunting for lol

  5. here’s a thought: what if the threat Silvally was created to combat was Zygarde? if it was created by Aether Foundation (speculation) and they did something evil that would awaken Zygarde’s wrath (speculation), then maybe they anticipated Zygarde’s interference?

    Reply
    • I could see that. Aether would want to use Silvally as a weapon to protect themselves and then Gladion basically saved it from them and decided to fight for its rights. lol

      Reply
        • I could see it as Gladion’s being the original and then after your defeat AF, Hala/Kukui go through AF’s labs and find out there was another. They would then give it to you as you’d be the most responsible person they know lol

          Reply
          • I can’t really see Gladion giving his away. I mean, he has a great trust bond with it, plus he has a Silvally, so if he gave it away there would be no way to register Type: Null into the dex (unless you can breed it).

          • Right so that would mean there’s another. Like I said, maybe after everything is said and done the main characters find out AF had another one just in case and the player character is given it since they’re the hero? lol

          • Yeah exactly. That way we’d be able to have Type: Null ourselves and Gladion could keep it’s close bond with his.

  6. The Biggest Null/Silvally mystery is… What Pokemon is it made from?
I used to think the starters, Rowlett Feet, Litten Body, Popplio Tail, but they look nothing alike the evos we know of…

  7. I’ve gotta say, I’m WAY more excited for the 27th than all the recent announcements. This release has potentional to debunk the idea that the leaks are the complete dex, or not. Maybe they just want to mess with us a little longer so they won’t reveal anything just yet (or maybe they won’t reveal anything else at all, maybe it’ll be a secret, either way I still 100% believe that it isn’t complete. :P)

  8. Didn’t the chinese leaker say that there was a cat that could change it’s type base on it’s parent? while sivally is vaguely cat-like it doesn’t change it’s type based on it’s parent. So maybe there are more pokemon to be revealed.

  9. So this is gonna sound a bit weird and out of the blue, but does anyone remember that in the first trailer there was a part where there was a Pokemon image under a piece of paper, and there was a bunch of buzz on what that was. Did we ever find out? O_o I feel like people sorta forgot about it entirely.

  10. According to a thread on 4chan explaining why we may have more Pokemon to be revealed, someone quoted a “pink long eared Pokemon” that was supposedly in a trailer. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

  12. Am I only one who thinks that the people who thinks there’s more new Pokemon are just in denial. You’re just preparing yourself to be hurt even more, rather than just accepting the facts.

    Reply
    • I think you are right. I have a feeling that due to the nature of the recent gens, they simply need to add fewer pokemon than they used to. but as long as pokemon keeps going, I couldn’t be happier. I’m sure that eventually, with enough negative reaction to the amount of new creatures, they will listen and add more new ones when another gen comes around.

      Reply
    • I’ve learned after the ORAS datamine, I was totally in denial that the Battle Frontier wouldn’t come. But alas, it never did so… I’m 100% sure that these are all the new mons. Kinda odd that Magearna is the only Mythical Pokemon this gen tho.

      Reply
  13. If Magearna is the only Mythical, and we can obtain it early, then how will they keep players coming back to Sun and Moon in the period before the next games? In the past Mythicals have been spaced out between the games’ release and the next generation to keep us interested, but without that incentive it makes me wonder what they’re planning.

    Reply
    • Oh who gives a shit, the stupid thing is probably going to be an absolute annoyance once it goes live,
And if they let it have Stealth Rock I’m gonna be pissed but the last thing I need is yet another bulky mythical sitting around doing nothing while it somehow absorbs every blow and wins
Just get rid of all the legends

      Reply
      • I guess I somewhat agree. I’ve begun to dislike Mythicals because they give them no backstory or explanation as to why they’re being given to a 10 year old. My point is what can they do differently when all they’ve done in the past is give us these legendaries on silver platters?

        Reply
        • It’s so god damn morbid that they just shovel out op legends
Do you know how annoying it is to wake up every morning and get a Psychic mono which consists only of legends and Slowbro? Or the ever annoying Dragon mono which always the same thing lati, gar, Dragonite, black Kyurem and Hydregion all broken and overpowered
Flying monos who only use the genies and bulky Zapdos
Then comes the Steel who abuse Heatran to no end AND THAT FUCKING BROKEN JIRACHI SPAMMING IRON HEAD
Just too many overpowered legends and nobody will ever stop using them

Just once I want a whole year of Legends on Lockdown, nobody can’t use them, that way people can’t just fill up a team with cookie cutter teammates

But in the end I’m just pathetically wasting my breath because it’s only going to get worse and worse because nobody will stop unless forced which can’t be done

  15. Am I the only one who kinda likes Alolan Persian and Dugtrio? The games have never taken themselves seriously and they both have character, unlike ‘generic cat’ and ‘let’s just put three whack-a-moles together’

    • I like them for comedic sake but like I still kinda wish Persian was more proportionate, but hey I will still probs use one of each at some point

    • I don’t hate them, but I don’t love them. Although I’ve never been a fan of them to begin with. The only Alola version I love is Vulpix and Ninetales because I’ve forever wanted an ice fox, and Vulpix was my very first favorite Pokémon ever.

      Reply
        • No it’s not
It should’ve been pure Ice or the very least Ice/Ghost or Psychic but then that would clash with Marowak which should’ve been Ground/Fire like a savage warrior but nope

          • You’ll never know more about something than the creator did as they created it

That goes for everyone, not just you

          • That’s only because I can’t get a say in the process
If I could talk business with the creation team then we could see different outcomes

          • While you’re at it, demand better treatment for Ash. Since I recently found out that Masuda does have a say in the anime plot.

          • The whole point is that you don’t know anything because you’re not an employe! And even then, you’d still never know as much as the person who decided that Alolan Ninetales was Fairy in the first place as the choice was in their mind, something you’ll never be able to directly access.

And maybe if you were on the team you’d see why they made such a choice, because they’re professionals in the field who know better than every single person on this site combined tbh

          • Tbh I feel it could be the other way round, quick add ons to pan out the paltry Pokedex they’d given as, as well as to cheat the fact that they’re approaching 1000 Pokémon

          • You just said they don’t make sense and then went ahead and explained why they make sense… Nobody cares what you guys think anyway

          • Of course you would still think that, you completely disregarded the argument rather than either tackle it or just agree to disagree.

You aren’t as good as professionals in the field, and a lot of your argument is based on subjectivity because of course you’re going to think your idea is better, despite others showing opinions that are quite the contrary. Simple as.

          • Have to agree with Earthen on this. They’re exploiting Fairies now. There’s no legitimate reason to give Alolan Ninetales Fairy typing.

          • Well if you actually understood what ninetails is based on, you would understand why fairy typing makes perfect sense

          • I think it makes sense to be Fairy, yes Psychic and Ghost also make a lot of good sense and I’d love to see that but they didn’t die when they came to Alola…so that rules ghost out. As for psychic no justification besides the very fine line between psychic and fairy designs. I think they chose fairy to give it some back up resistances to balance the newly adapted Pokemon to their surroundings.

          • Ghost/fire is clearly more interesting than the overly used ground and fire typing combination. And there’s really nothing wrong with ice/fairy ninetails either but ice/ghost or ice/psychic would have sufficed as well. I mean to each it’s own but it’s just weird because you say your opinion as if they’re hard facts

    • I don’t really care one way or the other. I think they both look goofy and I do like that, but I can’t see myself using them necessarily lol

      Reply
    • I wanted an epic Egyptian themed blue cat…. slender and beautiful, with dramatic eyes and maybe even striped pharaoh hair and a beard, with more jewels etc. So I loathe alolan Persian. It’s truly a mess.

      Reply
        • Actually it did
Everyone forgot they were raised by royalty for quite some time which caused them to be spoiled snobbish and prideful

Persian of regular descent aren’t always pampered so they had to prowl and hunt for food so thus earning their lean physique but Alolan Persian were probably spoiled to death, and those Royal types probably bred them constantly until they looked the way they wanted them to

          Reply
          • Just because the thing’s spoiled doesn’t mean it’s going to become Egyptian royalty specifically

And I didn’t ‘forget’, I just didn’t think a smug, bland looking cat which has regional differences based on its treatment from a Hawaiian based region would end up Egyptian. I fully expected the thing to be a ‘beautiful Persian cat’ or a ‘fatcat’

          • i never said Egyptian Royal I was giving a in depth speech about the ramifications of selective breeding

          • Then what you said was pretty much irrelevant to what I said because I mentioned how it wasn’t going to become Egyptian royalty specifically as almost every Pokémon will have some sort of set up, arguably the only ones without it is the Clamperl line.
