  1. So my love for Olivia has caused me to notice something kinda interesting. She’s the third major black character GameFreak has made a rock type trainer. First Brock (debatable), then Grant, and now Olivia. The only other black characters are Aloe, Iris (also debatable), and Marshal.
Not anything terribly wrong. Just something I noticed. Gens 1-4 can obviously be forgiven because they are set in regions based on Japan. Unova is based on America, more specifically New York which is where 3 of those six black characters reside.
It makes me extremely happy that the characters of Alola are much more diverse, appropriate considering their Hawaiian based region

    • For a more minor occurrence, there were black basketball NPC trainers in Unova and in Crystal, they made the hikers black. Also the veterans and rangers in XY.

      Reply
      • I won’t comment on the hikers in gen 2 but I don’t actually like the fact that the basketball, (and football players), were the only black trainer classes. It is a VERY stereotypical depiction. Not to mention that Aloe was an Aunt Jemima mammy character… >_>

          • They did but did not dress her for the part. Everyone else in the museum was dressed like how someone you’d imagine working in a museum would dress. Then here comes Lenora looking like she just came out of a kitchen slaving away on dinner for all the workers even though SHE’S the curator.
I love Lenora as well but that does not take away from her being horribly stereotypical

          • To be fair, Lenora does probably work with artefacts that might get her messy and require her to wear an apron. She even has her hair tied up.

Kinda wish they gave her heavy gloves of that’s what they were going for though, it look much better and less dodgy.

          • Lenora most certainly was a mammy archetype. She owns a museum but dresses in an apron, head band, has a huge afro, (all mammy staples). There was literally NO REASON she should be dressed like that considering the context in which she exists. She was a mammy through and through

          • You say ther hair wasn’t black as if this isn’t a Japanese series where black hair in any context is actually weird…

Second of all her not dressing like an archeologist was not my problem and is fine. Her dressing like she’s the house cook on a plantation when she is in fact the curator and owner of the museum is where the issue lies… everyone else in the gym/museum is dressed for the part. Literally everyone. Including her husband who is wearing a suit and tie. But here she is dressed in a damn apron with a head scarf on…

You may not “think” that she is mammy character but that does not change the truth of the matter. Especially considering I’m not the only one that says this… many articles have been written on exactly this subject with everyone basically saying the same thing. She should not have been depicted that way based on the context of her role in the games

          • Chill the fuck down tbh, who cares if she’s a mammy character, there was no negative connotation to that and she’s the freaking owner of a museum.

          • First, there was no need for cursing. I did not curse and therefor will not take the disrespect of being cursed at.

Second the very fact that she is a mammy stereotype is itself a negative thing. But I’m not about to argue with this as I see you won’t get it or understand, (seeing as you said who cares if she is; to which my reply would be obvious… I CARE, and everyone else that wrote articles and made videos about the same issue!!). Just because something doesn’t effect you or reflect badly on you does NOT give you the right to claim that it should matter and that it is not a big deal to anyone else.

          • If you’re American I understand why you’re so sensitive, but I don’t think many other black people would take any offense over a video game character who obviously is someone important considering she’s the owner of a museum and a gym leader.

          • I am American, but you’d be wrong in assuming that other black people around the world don’t take offense to seeing ourselves poorly represented in games.
And we certainly do not appreciated being told “you should be happy that at least you’re an important character” when as I’ve already stated that character is a stereotypical representation.

It’s easy for one to say these things when they don’t have to think about them because people that look like them are much better represented. If the Pokémon series, (or any anime series honestly), had many more well-thoughtful and meaningful black characters I would not take such offense to Lenora being stereotypical. But it doesn’t….so she stands out. Along with the basketball/football trainer class. I like Iris, and Marshal. They are fine… but there’s only two of them. In a region based of of America. It is not something I as a black person can simply ignore and not notice.

          • I’m half-white half-black and I can’t stand all this bullshit about political correctness and racism. I sure can tell you no one in my family would give a flying fuck about black people not being represented in a video game. But anyway, it’s changing now with Alola so everyone can be happy. Just remember Pokemon is a Japanese game and there are basically no black people there (or white for that matter)

          • I’m saying it because if they’d really intended a mammy archetype they would have left it black, like Brock’s hair.

Wearing an apron doesn’t mean she’s a cook, they do actually wear aprons in other professions, like smithing, and sometimes locksmithing and clock repair. Her husband’s choice of clothing has no reflection on her own. Some pokemon professors didn’t wear labcoats even when their staff did (e.g. Rowan).

Those articles probably come from the same places that made Pokemon retcon Jynx to be purple instead of black.

          • They would not have kept it black just to say “oh hey we REALLY want you to know that this is a stereotype”.

And once again, (I don’t see why you’re not getting my point now) I have no issue if she was wearing an apron because she’s an archeologist if literally ANYONE ELSE IN THE MUSEUM DID THE SAME… but seeing as that’s not the case… the apron wasn’t necessary.

And the fact that you speak condescendingly of the sites that got the original Jynx re colored is proof of your ignorance and reason for me to no longer humor this discussion. Japan is know for its racist depictions of black people in anime and games. Mr. Popo from DBZ being a prime example, along with Jynx. If you don’t know why then you need to go look up the history of Japanese Sambo dolls to get a idea.

        • See, design I think she was quite stereotypical, but I feel her character more came form the ‘big mother’ stereotype (bigger women are more motherly).

      • I’m going to hold back my joke about which pokemon he would have..but that would be cool actually, maybe a gym leader for each of the 8 biggest religions

        Reply
        • He better not be having them Electrodes! Haha, but in all seriousness, I’d want him to be a water type gym leader, since it makes sense considering the geographic location of Arabia.

        • The challenge would be finding 8.
According to wikipedia, the 4 biggest are Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism, the rest are folk religions (5.9%), irreligion or ‘other religions’ (1%)

      • What would you count Dalia the frontier leader as? I always thought she was middle eastern, especially due to the music in her arena, but I think others argue that she was hispanic.

        Reply
      • I don’t think religion will be brought up at all due to the nature of the universe, but someone who’s ethnicity is from that of a majority Muslim country is sorely needed.

        Reply
      • The franchise hasn’t introduced anyone who identifies by a religion, and if they do in the future it will be a made up Pokereligion like “Praise the Helix”.

        Reply
      • Muslims won’t be shown, that’s a religion, not a race. Just like they don’t put Christians or Jews in.

They’re fine with borrowing from the lore of a religion though.

        Reply
        • I mean, they kinda did in the Hoopa movie, and I wasn’t referring to them identifying as a religion, I was more like “Hey, I’m Abdullah, the water type gym leader.”

          Reply
          • Don’t call them Muslims if you mean race. Islam isn’t a race, it’s a religion. You get white muslims, like Jihadi John.

They are Indians, Pakistanis, Arabs etc

        • He said Middle Eastern.. And not all Middle Eastern people are Muslims…So we can have A middle eastern Gym leader without associating religion with it.

          Reply
          • It wasn’t controversial, it was just wrong.
Like I said, Islam is a religion, not a race as Cyanic intended.

          • It’s somewhat controversial in this context, because the religion was used as catch-all term for people of middle eastern descent, which isn’t the same thing at all
I mean it’s not like there was a heated debate over it either, just semantic clarification

  2. I know I said I don’t like planning teams but sometimes a theme pops up and you know you have to do it

I think for Sun, I’m going to have a ‘masculine’ theme, and for Moon, a ‘female’ theme. Mostly inspired by Western Sun and Moon Dieties being male and female respectively.

    And for teams, I’ll have:

    Sun

    Liften3
    Jangmo-o 3

    Moon

    Popplio3
    Tsareena
    Salandit
    Cutiefly Final Evo

As my centerpiece members whilst still rotating a lot.

          • Well, off the bat, I see nothing wrong with it other than you may be lacking in defense. Wishiwashi and Kommo-o seem like the type to be able to take a few hits, but offense might be their strong suit, like a less naturally defensive mega mawile. Lycanroc might be an early game deal, so I wouldn’t hold out on it being all that effective later on…or I that’s what I would’ve said if not for it having a super priority move that could really come through in a pinch; and as stealth rock has shown, having access to a rock move at the right time can really cripple some teams. I’m still expecting steel/flying for pikipek, so that might give you a decent defensive pivot if it turns out to be true.

          • Thank you, you made some good points. Im really hoping for a good pikipek3 or i might have to switch him for something else. Im still waiting to see if we get alolan arcanine before i fully commit to wishiwashy. Lycanroc might be replaced with silvally in the later game depending on when we can actually get him.

          • Yeah, I was juggling on Silvally myself, but seeing as how it’s portrayed as the partner to who may as well potentially be your rival, I don’t expect them to just be widely obtainable. Hopefully late game at best and not as some giveaway only a year later.

          • I agree, i would like him to be on my team but im sure he’s going to be obtainable late game. I feel like he’s gonna be the zoroark/Lucario of this gen

          • If it can’t breed, it can’t be a Zoroark/Lucario equivalent.

I don’t think it would be breedable either, but it’s not completely impossible knowing GF.

          • If Pikipek gets a non-normal typing and the design is decent, I’ll be going for it because I really like its first form (more than all other regional birds but Fletchling).

          • Really? well ill say its in my top 3 behind fletchling and starly. What do you think his typing is going to be? for some reason i think Flying-grass if not Flying-normal

          • Agreed but im on my phone 90% of the time and its easier to take out my phone to due a quick type check rather than going on my laptop.

          • This is one of my big issues with apps. People could just make a decent website instead and then it works on both phone and computer.

          • At least 1 Alolan Variant either Alolan Sandlash, Nintales Marrowak. And then between Silvally, Mudsdale, or Lurantis. I was initially looking for potential flyers or surfers but with pokeride seemingly replacing those HMs out side of battle i figured i wouldn’t need to make a team the way i usually do.

          • Yea i wanted to put an alolan variant on my team but i haven’t really seen one i really cared for just yet besides marowak but he isn’t needed since i have torracat. I agree on not needing a flyer anymore due to pokeride but i like to have a well rounded team and i think pikipeks dex entry gives a clue to it learning bullet seed which would be useful.

  3. Gotta say I also love Alolan Muk too. The moving pallet it a great idea. Also Grimer looks better in game than in it’s art. Still not a huge fan, ut it’s definitely better as a model.

    • Theres this parasite that infects snails and makes them clim atop plants to be eaten by birds so they can breed in said birds’ intestines for their lifecycle. Well the parasite makes the snails’ eyes bulge and da weird color thing like with Alolan Muk’s body.

  4. It’s kinda funny how people were making Great Mighty Poo jokes yesterday and now we actually have Alolan Muk bar the colour scheme it resembles it even more than grimer did…

  5. Silvally looks awesome
More interestingly it’s ability is called RKS system… Doesn’t It sound like Arceus System..

Jangmo-o’s evo look so much better in game.

    Bounsweet evos are average.

The new Captain and Kahuna Look nice, although the kahuna only uses 3 Pokémon. Looks like they haven’t Learnt from. XY.

  6. How are people pronouncing Ribombee? Usually I don’t have a problem with pronouncing names, but I’m not sure on this one lol

  7. Y Cutiefly should lose its nose thing when it evolving …..and the dex entry didn’t explain wat this scarf did ….. I would say Cutiefly is far better than Ribombee.
