  1. I was just thinking: have you realized how lucky we’ve been having the final evos of the starters leaked in June?
I mean, imagine a fire type trainer, who has always chosen the fire starter since 1996, seeing in November another four legged pokemon standing on two legs and looking part fighting. It would have been the biggest troll ever and Beltigre would have died in the pokemon community that day. Instead we have almost accepted its existence right now 🙂

  2. Speaking of in-game animations for the starters:
Rowlet 3 will most likely use his feathers and wings as bow and arrows and probably will make the leaves open and close on its face. I don’t think it will fly or have a continuous flying animation (It could not use its arrows I think, but that’s just a pity).
Litten3 will certainly move its huge hands in some scary way (Something like: Hey I’m scary, you know?) and will release flames from its belt.
Popplio3 will for sure stand up and untie its hair and pearls (and fabulousness). Don’t know what’s more, maybe will do that snaky move that Brionne does turning around.
    What do you think?

  3. I’ve come to accept the starters are supposed to be relatable to children. They show the many faces they go through to adult hood and finding themselves. Shown more this gen than any other if u ask me. It’s more obvious this time around.
Side note: My laptop doesn’t know “relatable” to be a word. . . -,-

  4. So the pokemon center is selling official pokemon badges now for only….$179.95! What a bargain! It’s not like I can get the same 8 badges online for $20 where they’re also probably better quality. Now that’d be ridiculous.

  6. So here’s the issue laid out how I see it. Dragon types needed nerfing- not because they don’t have enough weaknesses (although that might be part of it) but really because almost all dragon types are three stages, pseudos, or all around pretty powerful. Compare that to most bugs, normals, and grass types….There are some good ice types to counter, but not when compared to the beasts that dragons are. Then comes fairy. This helps poison be more viable, but unfortunately, half the fairies they create won’t stand a chance against a Salamence or Haxorus. The power levels are different. So we get random, inconsistent fairies (because not every cute normal poke can become a fairy) and they still don’t really nerf dragon. They’re still powerful except if a florges, gardevoir, etc are thrown in the mix. Fairies do a fairly good job at what they’re supposed to do, counter dragons. But to top it all off, they’re immunity makes them so much more usable over ice which has enough problems.

People can attack so many aspects of fairies (listed above) that it’s hard for this new type to exist successfully.

    • Here is my two cents:
You hitted the nail with your Dragon analysis.
The main problem with Dragon types was never the type itself but the pokemon
Dragon as an type is terrible offensive and average defensive
But the Pokemon that are dragon types: Above average//High stats.

when it comes to Fairy the problem is that the typing itself is amazing, and the stats they gave to most fairies are good too. There is really no balance there. In my honest opinion, the fairy type is the best type in the metagame rn and quite frankly the only way to change that is to nerf the type itself ( and buff ice types but that just personal because i love ice types)

      Reply
      • If you made ice effective against dragon and fairy it would become a monster in the game. Plus limit maybe one of its weaknesses.

        Reply
        • offensively, the ice type is one of the best. It really have a good coverage on the metagame (grass, ground, dragon, flying). Ice only need more resistances and less weakness to be better

          Reply
          • Offensively theyre great. But like someone said elsewhere, you’d never switch them in on an attack- theyre too frail.

      • Also, I’m not sure if I would call it the best type offensively. Moonblast and play rough are great moves, but fairies are pretty limited in their moveset. Also, they tend to be pretty special oriented. I for one am pleased with the amount of fairies we are getting this gen, it varies up the pool to pick from instead of a select ten maybe that are useful (though I would like more ice and ghost types too). The fairies we have and that are being added make sense. They all fit the type (except maybe Ninetales but I guess you could say that’s because of its magic but whatevs). That’s whats so great about types like water- theres such a wide variety of strategies, moves, tanks-sweepers-etc., that you can put a water type on your team for coverage and not have to worry about your opponent knowing exactly how to counter you.

        • here is the thing. fairy type is effective against Dark, Fighting and Dragon which are basically top tier types in the metagame. Having steel, poison and fire as the only resistance makes them even stronger because from that group steel is the only one that have the defensive niche.

          Reply
          • imo. what fairy needs is more weakness and drop either fighting or dark as an effective move. Also its immunity to dragon was too much

          • Immunity to dragons was great lol just because it made everyone with a dragon have to scramble for other moves in their sets (granted, dragons can learn a ton of different moves so that’s not really a problem)

          • That’s bit of an understatement
The only thing Fairies truly fear is Excadrill since it has the bulk to fend off them and stab Iron head but even so you got to deal with the Mawiles which are bulky, Azumarill with it high HP, Togekiss paraflinching and all have high Sp Def so sludge bomb has to be Stab to make a dent, people rarely carries PJab offensively these days so saying that they’re easy pickings is very much wrong

          • Scizor and Crobat usually do a decent enough job for me.

My Scizor one-shot my friend’s Mega Gardevoir with an Iron Head once.

    • Dragons don’t need nerfing to be completely honest. Dragon is one of the rarest typings in the game, so yeah they’re obviously going to be more powerful than say a grass type.

All typings have their advantages and disadvantages, Dragons happen to be hyper offensive and as a result everyone wants a nerf. Dragons are fine as they are, those that have a problem with it aren’t very good at playing Competitive Pokemon.

      • To be fair (I am agreeing with you for once and never again) but Dragons are still mega tough, ever see a generic Dragon Mono? They’re nightmarish if you don’t have a Mamoswine

        Reply
          • “theyre fucking dragons lmfao. they’re supposed to be tough” I would quote this as my senior quote in a yearbook

          • Seriously every dragon mono consists of
            Garchomp
            Latios
            Latias
            Black Kyurem
            Hydregion
            And Dragonite

            It’s just too much sometimes

          • but like I said before, there aren’t THAT many dragons to begin with so, team building mono dragon is much harder than mono water.

      • If this was the case, I feel like fairies would never have existed. Obviously there was a problem. I agree that every type cant have the same amount of weaknesses or strengths or overall stats, but ice (with terrible defenses most of the time) and grass having so many while dragon having so little AND being hyper offensive, it makes for an unbalanced system.

        Reply
        • But we’re talking about NOW, not previously. Dragons are balanced NOW with the addition of Fairies. We’re not talking about previously.

To be fair, it’s much harder to slay a dragon that burn a blade of grass or smash a block of ice.

          Reply
          • Touche good sir. I agree, dragons are pretty balanced now, but fairies have a bit of an upper hand as we’ve listed below (with their weaknesses being easy to take down for the most part and the immunity of course). IDK how to fix all of this. I would just love for ice to get more love. After everything that’s been done to the metagame and all we’ve talked about fairies and dragons, at the end of the day, defensively, ice and grass are super weak. Now, I know not all types can be equally defensive but come on, take one or two weaknesses off and it would make it that much more balanced. Not perfect, but maybe imperfection and unbalance between all the types is the right balance.

          • I don’t think the problem with ice is the weaknesses, it’s that Gamefreak isn’t making competitively viable ice types, all the stats are in the wrong places. Weavile is a great Pokemon, so is Froslass and Mamoswine. What do they have in common? FAST(esp with a scarf) and hit Pokemon hard.

Other than that, ice has become a coverage typing because not many competitively viable Pokemon have STAB ice attacks.

          • Yep you nailed it. Ice is strong when its allowed to be. Two or so every gen new mons does nothing for the type. But the issue is that there is such a variety of pokemon within types like water and such, heck even electric types like Electivire does okay not being fast like most of its peers in that type. But you get one defensive ice poke like avalugg and it struggles at its one job. A type sucks if it can only succeed in one area.

    • Basically it gave psychic another weakness, which due to a bug in the game it had none in gen one, and steel was probably invented so they could have more metal based designs in pokemon. Why not really. Steel’s still the best defensive type in the game, and it has led to a lot of interesting designs as “being made of Metal” pretty much means you can design anything you want.

      Reply
    • Dark is immune to psychic, so psychic gets a weakness that it quite literally can’t do anything against, and steel was invented to give fighting types a boost (and create a good defensive type).

  7. I’d be willing to bet that any Pokémon revealed from now, until release, will be (pre)evolutions of ones that we already know. For example, I doubt we’ll see the supposed snowman and dolphin Pokémon until the game is out because they’re not connected to any Pokémon that we’ve already seen.

    Reply
    • I would love that. Although I do get nervous when that happens because that either means they suddenly got conservative with how many theyre revealing…OR… there aren’t a lot left to reveal and they don’t want to spoil every single one. I would like some evolutions to be left in the dark for me to discover however.

      Reply
          • Well I didn’t mean the designs I just meant the names. At very least, a confirmation that there will be more than 70 new Pokémon in the game. Even if it’s only 80 – that’s still better than X/Y!

          • I thought Gen V had too much. Gen VI not enough. 100 is the perfect amount IMO. Just another reason why Gen II is my favorite.

          • G5’s issue wasn’t just the amount, it’s that the quality suffered for the quantity, and that most of their pokemon were created as reinventions of Kanto Pokemon.

          • So true. I’ve always seen Gen V as the hit or miss gen. For every Chandalure, Bisharp and Mineshau, there’s a Maractus, Druddigon or Bouffelant…

          • Unfortunately it looks like spanish bird bitch oricorio is about to steal its signature move and also volcy might be hit hard by that priority rock move, especially if a lot pokemon get it as an egg move. Ugh..

          • True..I just don’t want oricorio to get fiery dance. It makes so much sense for it to, but it should have its own move.

          • It will, they’re all about ruining signature moves these days.

Remember when only Beedrill learnt Twineedle, only Raticate could Super/Hyper Fang and only Sneasel could Beat Up?

          • I’m half and half about Druddigon, I don’t outright hate it but I think they went OTT with the pointy bits. The colour scheme was good and at least its body looked like it belonged to a dragon. I prefer it to Hydreigon.

          • I’ll be honest, I actually liked Bouffelant more than Tauros and didn’t like Mienshao, but I agree they had a handful good ones and a lot of pretty awful ones.

          • Which ones don’t you like? Just curious? I don’t like Conkeldurr’s line or the monkeys. Darminitan has recently grown on me. I also don’t like Gothitelle.

          • I hate the Gothitelle line.
I love Seismitoad but hate both its pre-evolutions.
I have mixed feelings on the monkeys. I feel like they had potential, and were obviously intended to become super popular…but then they went and screwed up all three evolutions..

I could go on and list my opinion of every Gen V Pokémon, but I’m not gonna do that right now 😛 I do love all the ghost types though. Gen V hit that nail right on the head.

          • It taught me to appreciate the underrated move that is Snatch. Sure it requires a lot of prediction, but nobody ever expects it.

          • I’m ok with the Monkeys, they feel a bit wasteful though (I think they should have done a wormadam/eevee type thing, have a normal monkey at the bottom, evolve it with a stone to the ‘pan’ form and then level up or friendship to the ‘simi’ form, and maybe make those just different forms of the same pokemon instead of different species).

I dislike Conkeldurr’s line (but in fairness I never liked Machamp’s line either).
I don’t like the Gothitelle or Reuniclus lines.
            I don’t like Trubbish’s line.
            I don’t like Samurott but I like it’s prevos.
I don’t like Lillipup’s line, but not enough to want it erased.
I liked Purrloin but Liepard always felt off to me.
Pidove’s line is yet another boring flying/normal Pidgey/Starly. The sexual dimorphism of Unfezant slightly makes up for it though.
Earthen’s gonna hate me because I don’t like Excadrill much. I’d be ok with it if it didn’t have the metal bit on its head though.
Basculin was the pinnacle of pointless.
Sigilyph is like a really uncool version of Xatu.

I’m gonna stop there or I’ll be here all day XD

          • Lol I agree on most except I find Reuniclus to be adorable. Trubbish and garbodor grew on me (tho I wish garbodor’s pebbles were a different color and didn’t look like fish tank rocks). Lilipups line is the pinnacle of using too many jagged lines for fur. I have tried so hard to like Excadrill but I just cant. I like drilbur, but something about the black lines outlining the jagged designs on his back but not his front looks sloppy (look it up on its sprite. Maybe its just theyre way of showing shading and maybe I’m being wayyyy too nitpicky.) I also don’t like the white on its face or those little red lines. The spike on its head is unnecessary too… I also really want to like Basculin but I cant….

          • Reuniclus looks like snot and I will never like Trubbish or Garbador, their only redeeming qualities are their faces.
I don’t like Drilbur much either tbh.

It looks cool, but it serves no purpose.
If they’d given it an evolution it could have been a cooler version of Goldeen or a new Magikarp, but on its own it’s just a wasted slot.

A lot of G5 pokemon either should have been 3 stage instead of 2 or evolved at a much earlier level. Yamask and Drilbur are particularly notable for this since they’re both tiny pokemon and become hulking brutes in their 30s as a sudden transition when they could have an intermediate form that would do much better.

          • I’m not too bothered by Conkeldur line.
            Yeah, Trubbish line is trash…
I agree with Samurott. They had such strong designs going and then THAT…
I love the Lilipup line. My favorite dog-based Pokémon line, for sure.
I feel the exact opposite on your opinions of Purrloin and Liepard.
The Pidove line is VERY boring. My least favorite regional bird.
I agree that Excadrill could have been slightly better designed. That metal bit on its head is weird. I’m also sick of seeing them so much in competitive.
I wish I liked Basculin more than I do.
Siglilyph may not be as cool as Xatu but I still like it. Just wish it had connection with the Unown in some way.

          • It’s obvious Conkeldur is trying to be a new Machamp, and the iron beam/stone pillar is just a pointless addition. Plus its legs are tiny.

            I prefer Arcanine personally.
I don’t hate the Lillipup line like I do some of the others, but it feels bland. They should have at least given it a second type by its third form.

The only regional bird line I like is Talonflame. Pidgeot, Staraptor and Unfezant all bore me to tears.

Yeah, remove the metal bit on its head and stick a form between it and Drilbur.

I think Sigiliph looks horribly horribly derpy. I’m not even sure which of its 3 eyes are real. It looks like an absurd caricature of a pokemon. I can see why it would have a connection with the unown, but I think the unown at least look decent and their meaning is aparent, sigiliph is neither use nor ornament.

          • Mainly the reinventions bugs me (but then I think about the reinventions we get every gen and I feel better). Quality wasn’t too bad. There are a few where they like to throw in some extra jagged lines for fur and such and call it a day.

    • I’d actually prefer the other way. I’d rather see Pokemon from many lines, even if it’s nearly every line, but keep final evolutions secret for us to discover ourselves.

          • Lemurs are Primates, but they’re not Monkeys.
Monkeys are Simians, Lemurs are Prosimians.

I’m not saying it’s not the “rugby monkey” I’m just saying the person who called it a “rugby monkey” doesn’t do their research and clearly knows very little about the animal kingdom.

I’m busy with college right now but I’m on occasionally and check every day, and I have to say that being able to chat about something like ice types and nerfing and good designs in pokemon with people who care and who are genuinely respectful is just so cool. Did I do this elaborate insult thing right? This is a joke if it wasn’t obvious btw

          • usually its like that. “Why don’t you use something that will win? nobody uses purugly because its useless!” I like to use what interests me, not only strong pokemon. Karen’s words ring true. also, that’s why the sugar daddy in ORAS battle resort is my least favorite character in all of pokemon. his advice is a slap in the face to Karen’s philosophy. he says something along the lines of “Truly talented trainers will need to learn to use stronger pokemon instead of their favorites in order to win.” that really bugs me, the game giving advice like that.

          • I like Bewear.
I’m ok with liking Normal types even though generally they bother me.
            Purugly though… you’re dead to me ; n ;
(Seriously though, I liked Glameow, Purugly was kind of disappointing)

          • purugly, excellent speed stat, access to fake out, U-turn, knock off, resists ice and fire, immune to ghost. Life orb fake out/last resort punches holes in things… people don’t expect purugly to come in guns blazing but it does and its a very effective pokemon. and its super cute to boot.
