  1. I feel like they didn’t really know how to make interesting characters for their E4 until gen 3… Still like Karen and Will a bit though 🙂

  2. I actually REALLY like Karen.
She actually gave me my motto for training Pokemon that I still use today:
“Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best.”

Karen is the best, hands down.

    • Feel that. I don’t care about base stats. If I like what a Pokémon looks like or if I like its typing, I’ll use it. Especially since I don’t play competitively.

      • I have a team of some of my favorites, an all female team, that I bred for competition. Actually, they are the first competitive Pokemon I’ve ever raised, and they do quite well in both Singles and Doubles. ^+^
        Gliscor
        Togekiss
        Lanturn
        Froslass
        Charizard
        Lucario

        • That’s fine for you, but what about all those people who like non-final forms and pokemon with bad type matchups like Ice/Rock?

No need to tell me about competition, I have boxes full of 5 IV pokemon, and a couple of 6 IVs.

      • It’s not the only way, but after completing the main story there’s not much else to do in most cases.

Except the battle facilities, but the AI is either predictable or unintelligent.

        • Not saying you don’t, but I know I a lot of people who play Pokémon irl and most play and do different stuff. I know people who just replay the main story. I know people who try to do every little post-game content there is. I know people who focus on the PokéDex, I know people who play Smogon style meta, and someone who just plays online casually. While some of the most hardcore fans overlap with a number of these, in my experience most people don’t do EVERYTHING EVER POSSIBLE with Pokémon. They just do their thing.

          • I could never imagine throwing away my pokemon and restarting, I get too attached to the memories and my trainer ID.

I do all the after story stuff but that runs thing after a while to the point where farming items, IV training and competative battling is pretty much all that remains.

Never tried online simulations, but that’s pretty much the only thing apart from entering a public official competition and getting involved with the TCG that I haven’t tried.

      • I’m sorry but that’s sort of simplistic. Just because of colour palette?
I remember first artwork of Karen and her first sprite, gold and silver ones. And those depictions, while different from the newest (HG SS) share something in common: her attitude and expression. Decisive, crafty and elusive. It is, for me, one of the most underrated, even wasted character concepts in pokemon. That’s what I think characterizes her as a Dark trainer.

Also amazed of the combination that gives her so much personality: she wears strange clothing, shaggy, comfortable, almost tropical in both arts (old and new). Gives her a very particular vibe in contrast with her ferocious expression. A shame that she hasnt been given a bit more of complexity and weight in the games.

  3. Going with my girl Karen. First dark type trainer, her rematch team is awesome, and do I even need to mention her great quote when you face her?

  4. Very tough decision for me between Koga and Karen. While I’m not even a big fan of Poison types, I love Koga’s team. Dark type is my 3rd favourite typing, so Karen is obvious.

    • Same here but I’m going to have to also go with Karen. I love dark types and that coupled with the the fact that she is an umbreon trainer seals my vote.

    My words are failing me,

I actually had to hold back some tears…. I thought I used them all up but… There they are…

  6. For the first time, I am impartial.

Guess I’ll go with Karen, cos she’s the first Dark Type specialist. Kind of sad that she never used a Tyranitar.

      • The early E4s followed themes rather than types.
In a way I prefer the idea of not making the E4 type specialists. I think the game would be tougher if the E4 and gym leaders didn’t specialise in a single type.

        Reply
        • I think that would be a good idea as well. Or, at the very least, if the E4 and Champion didn’t. Like Cynthia was great because her team is so diverse. You can’t really spam one pokemon to win.

          Reply
          • Yeah. Trainers are tougher when they don’t specialise.

That was one of the reasons I liked Pokemon Colosseum/XD as well, the villains teams were quite mixed. Some had 3 pokemon with 1 type in common and the other 2 were different, but some had them all different, like Venus.

They used their pokemon because they were strong, not because they had a favourite type.

          • I remember struggling with it a lot more wiht Colosseum than I did with the main games.

I didn’t actually complete it the year I got it. I got stuck because I couldn’t find the train key after defeating Lady Venus (which itself took me many attempts).

I came back to it several years later and spotted the key instantly. I’d been confusing the sparkle of the item for a dripping pipe all that time XD

          • I have still not beaten it my team is if what I remember

            Umbreon
            Flygon
(I forgot the rest) I’ll look on my GameCube

          • Dropping Espeon was a mistake, Umbreon and Espeon should be kept as a pair to use them to their full potential.

Flygon, Hitmontop and Sneasel are good though.

  7. “Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best. I like your style. You understand what’s important. Go on — — the Champion is waiting.”
    Karen wins

  8. My love for Karen runs deeper than blood. I wish she was a much more prominent character than just being an Elite Four and had a large role in the games. She’s one of those people that speaks for a reason and doesn’t concern herself with nonsensical gibberish. And for that, I respect and love her. My vote goes to Karen and Will comes in close second because his character design and characteristics are top notch as well.

    • Nice to see such good feelings for Karen. I feel the same about her. Such innovative, elegant and ferocious character concept that got wasted.

On the other hand her figure will have something sort of mythological, since it will never be completely known. Absence of a clear rounded and known life sort of “divinizes” her.

  9. Definitely Karen as she’s not only the kind of trainer I am as far as picking Pokemon, but also she’s a babe lol

    P.S. anyone see this? (RF)

          • I just think it’s weird that people can be fine hitler memes trivialising the holocaust and still get upset at the attack helicopter joke. Both trivialise what would otherwise be serious matters but people almost always get more offended at one than the other.

That says a lot about modern culture.

Personally I don’t get offended at either since they’re both intended as jokes and don’t reflect people’s actual opinions. If people were legitimately worshipping Hitler or something it’d be different.

          • Well I mean, IDK. I guess it’s just that the Holocause happened 80 years ago. It is something most people don’t fully understand the weight of. It is kinda the same as how no one really cares about the Crusades even though that was pretty bad too. It’s because it isn’t experienced so it is hard to completely get why it was so awful.

With attack helicopter stuff, it is just a bit closer to home for me for a number of reasons and it just just kinda annoying. While yeah, Hitler is 10000X worse than this, it is the personal connection I guess that makes it more or less bad

          • 71-75 years ago.

Some of my family were soldiers in the conflict. My Grandad once showed me photos of where the Nazis tried to shoot at his bus but hit the wrong side and missed the drivers seat. If they’d shot the other side I wouldn’t be alive right now.

          • Wow, that’s crazy. Look, I really don’t want you to get me wrong here. The holocaust really was one of the worst things that has happened in human history. The fact that humans have done these things to other humans is awful. That is a huge understatement. Like, I know. It is serious. It is just easier for others to joke about, they may not be right in doing so, but it is easy for them.

And yeah, attack helicopter jokes are like getting poked to the holocaust’s getting the titanic dropped on your head. It is just certain things affect people more than others.

          • And mom’s response is “So many Christians died too” well I think the Hews hold that favor in this

          • To be fair loads of soldiers of many nations died, but the jews get the focus because of the circumstances in which they died.

          • He values his vast militaristic regime and bringing German’s economic growth and some other historical junk

          • Everyone does good things and bad things, nobody is truly good or evil. I’m sure even Mother Teresa had a bad side.

Except for Marmite, Marmite is evil in a jar.

          • So like, he respects his leadership skills? Like, he knows the whole genocide part is bad right? Like I can understand that. The fact that Hitler was able to get people to do terrible things like that is impressive and a few other things. He was a great leader, but a terrible murderer too

          • Some psychologists (under the guidance of Stanley Milgram) did an experiment once proving that in some countries most people when put under a situation where they believed they were administering pain to someone would keep going because they were ordered to do so, despite knowing it was wrong.

It’s known as the Milgram experiment
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

Interestingly the results vary by coutry though, proving obedience to authority in spite of morality is something cultural.

P.S. My qualification in Psychology wasn’t a total waste.

          • It was very interesting experiment, with interesting results. Definitely one of my fave experiments to learn about 🙂

          • Yeah, the scary bit is the implication that people who never thought they’d go through with it went through with it because of fear of authority.

I don’t know if that means there’s something deeply flawed in our societies or if it’s a good thing because obedient people are more likely to obey the law. After all, morals don’t always match what the law says.

I was hoping to find figures for the differences between countries, but couldn’t find any. I’m fairly certain places like Japan and America were high, but I can’t remember any of the lower places. I’ve got a feeling the UK and Australia were reasonably low.

The best I could find is this which seems to match what I remember:
            http://www.performancetrading.it/Documents/JmAbuGrahib/Images/JmA_03.gif
Indicating Britons and Australians were less likely to comply than others 😛

          • Occasionally in closed doors he’ll make genocide jokes
            I honestly don’t care he’s always been a A-Hole

          • Only the genocide and 4/20 but in all seriousness he harbors a decent amount of respect for that evil bastard

    • This reminds me of this thing I came up with the other night
I was showing my Brother the new trailer (he really didn’t care one way or another) but I was telling him about Sampson and he immediately dismissed it as Oak in Blackface…
Then it got me thinking what if Professor Oak was African American….

“Alight you a Bro or a Ho?”
