  1. Actually, none of the Kalos gym leaders is astonishing for me but I will choose Valerie for being the first Fairy type gym leader and actually she is quite different and interesting with her whole “I want to be a Pokemon” concept.

  2. The Kalos Region: How NOT to do gym leaders.

Probably voting for Korrina since she’s not completely lame. Also, am I the only one who thinks something looks wrong with Viola..? Her crotch is super high up compared to her hips..

  3. XY had the most forgettable gym leaders in the entire series except for maybe Korrina. It’s sad because BWBW2 gave the gym leaders actual story and made them do something other then stand in one spot in their gym

    Reply
      • I know. I’m using BW as an example because XY came out right after generation 5 and pretty much took a step backwards except for making the games 3D

        Reply
      • what dp lacked in story they backed it up difficulty. DP wasnt even that bad when it cames to story. Some of them have interactions between each other

        Reply
          • It’s everything to me. I don’t care if the leaders had personality, if I don’t remember their fight because they were pushovers, they aren’t good leaders. That’s the main reason I hate gen 6 in general.

          • … tbh I found gen 4 leaders to be pushovers with the exception of fantina, which may be why she’s the only one I remember, with xy i remember a lot more of them because their gyms and designs were interesting, like olympia and Valerie, but I forget about korrina and the grass leader all the time because they were simply lack lustre in their gyms, or totally awful in design imo (korrina)

          • See they don’t need to leave their gym to leave an imprint on me, I am at this point convinced I have a different definition of quality and rememberability than almost everyone here, which there is nothing wrong with, I’m just different I guess, honestly everything about Valerie, her gym, the town it was in and the surrounding areas had me totally amazed, but I understand most people have to have things told to them by the game to enjoy it, where as I usually see elements in the games that most people don’t and totally adore them

          • So what makes you like a gym leader then exactly..? Usually people like characters if they leave some sort of imprint on the player through dialogue and such.

          • My top things for liking a gym leader are as follows:
            -Gym Design
            -Leader Appearance
            -Speech
            -Backstory
            -Pokemon Used

Valerie is the best imo because she wanted more than to just battle with pokemon, she wanted to understand them and know how they felt, thats why she got into fashion, she basically paid tribute to the pokemon she loved by modelling clothing after them in an attempt to understand them better.
She speaks with such elegance and grace, and gives off one of the kindest vibes of any gym leader. And she is incredibly strong both in battle and out of battle, her outfits weigh outrageous weights and through all of that she can still mop the floor with you if she so desires. Her gym is the most perfect embodiment of both her personality and the fairy typing, with rich fall colours and a house inside a tree, with a whimsical essence throughout.

          • I see. Generally for me they’ve got to have a role outside of the gym. I can’t really just like a gym leader when they say a few nice things before and after the battle and then stand there and do nothing while the towns pokeball factory is being raided.

          • yes thats fine but in kalos really none of the gym leaders do any of that, and while yes Korrina does leave her gym the only reason she does so is to introduce the character to mega evolution, which any character could have replaced her and done, it doesn’t give her any more character development it just develops the plot of the game and to like her for that and think it makes her the best is absurd because aside from that she’s more lacklustre than most of the gym leaders in the region, and her gym is just a mess

          • You’re not the only one.
Until today I’d forgotten Korrina left the gym, and apart from giving the player a Lucario I can’t remember anything she said or did.

Valerie doesn’t need to leave the gym, her gym is a mansion with a tree attached and it’s full of Furisode girls in neat costumes.

Plus the autumnal trail leading up to that town is probably my favourite route from Kalos purely because it’s the first time a game has had trees with orangey leaves and it was really pretty. Wasn’t too keen on the swamp, but the trees were nice.

And the scary house was a bit of a dissapointment, I was hoping it would be more like the old mansion from Sinnoh, giving the player chance to catch ghost pokemon or something.

          • An excuse to bring the friend group back together for 5 minutes seemingly.

X and Y always seemed unfinished to be fair. I think it took longer for them to upgrade to 3D than they expected so they ended up losing time to design pokemon and add stuff or something.

          • Pretty much every gym leader in existance is a pushover though. I haven’t lost to a gym leader since Gen 3.

      • Roark went outside his gym and you had to go get him.
Gardenia shows up outside the Old Chateau, although I can’t remember if this was before or after the gym battle.
Maylene walks to Snowpoint as “training”
Fantina likes and iirc competes in contests.
        Crasher Wake is Crasher Wake.
Byron didn’t really do anything but he’s Roark’s dad so I guess that counts for something.
I can’t remember what Candice did either.
Volkner was always the most memorable because of how Flint asked you to beat him up in a Pokemon battle, as he was getting bored of destroying anyone who faced him in a pokemon battle.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention Emerald or even the original games to have boring gym leaders. Those are far worse than D/P/Pt in my opinion.

        Reply
        • I never played Emerald and never really cared to, I loved R/S but when emerald came out I couldnt afford it and didn’t see much in the way of it being too different. The original games however, yes they were pretty barren but in my opinion D/P didn’t really do much more than they did, however in HGSS they had a lot more quality

          Reply
          • R/S and Emerald are the exact same. I just mentioned Emerald because that was the game I played more when I was younger.

Also D/P did a lot more than the original games did honestly. Especially with the gym leaders.

          • They aren’t the same. Emerald tweaked the plot so that Rayquaza got involved and R/S didn’t have the battle frontier. You could catch all three of the main legendaries, you got given a Johto starter after beating the champion. Also they swapped the gym leaders around slightly.

It did a bit more by making the player encounter them outside their gyms, but otherwise not that much more.

          • I never really played RS. Emerald was one of the first Pokemon games I played, and I played the hell out of it.

I know of some tweaks to the game over RS though, Incorporating both evil teams together, awakening both legends, Rayquaza and Sootopolis Cut Scene. My favourite change was Magma Base in Mt. Chimney (made so much more sense). Also the Gym leaders were made a bit more difficult. Emerald also tweaked the AI trainers so there were more optional Double Battles than in RS.

          • That’s why I never bought Platinum or B2/W2.
Emerald’s battle frontier was a nice addition, but ultimately it was only slightly better than R/S.

          • Emerald is my favourite pokemon game. I just think the gym leaders are bland and don’t do anything, bar Wallace.

          • Roxanne and Brawly are forgettable admittedly.
Wattson is more of a character and he takes you to new Mauville.
Flannery might not do much, but she looks good doing it.
Norman is the character’s father and shows that normal pokemon can present a bit of a challenge (not a major one, but a reasonable one).
Winona has a cool winged hat.
Tate and Lisa are to date the only gym with mandatory double battles. They’re easy enough to beat but the twin thing was pretty cool.
And Juan (it was Juan in Emerald, since Wallace had become champion) was pretty suave, but not quite as cool as Wallace.

Wallace was pretty cool apart from looking androgynous since he had a cape and a neat hat. Steven was the better chamion though, that kid knows how to dress.

          • The twins and the water type gym leader were all memorable, I agree on those.

I’m just trying to be un-biased as possible. I can remember all the gym leaders in RSE off the top of my head but I can see how they can boring to some people or not memorable.

          • I agree with everything you said.

Although in the anime Brawley was a surfer and Roxanne was a Pokemon School Teacher if I remember correctly. Unfortunately that didn’t translate into the games.

          • Roxanne was the first ever gym leader I faced in my pokemon career and one of the only only two I remember having problems with. But I was 7 and kept trying to use my Treecko to beat her, which wasn’t the smartest move 😛

Brawly will always be quite forgetful for me though. His fight was remarkably easy compared to the rest.

          • welp, see I always get rock and ground mixed up because lets be honest they are super similar and usually are both present, so I usually think rock is weak to grass, whoops

          • Aparently it’s super effective against Rock, but Rock does x1 damage to grass, i.e. Grass doesn’t resist Rock. Weird.

          • Her Nosepass is surprisingly tough, even for a type advantage.
Brawleys Makuhita was also tough with that vital throw, even when I was using Taillow and Ralts.

          • I literally can’t remember anything about when I beat Brawly other than I did it on my first try.

Nosepass is surprisingly tough when you’re early on.

Harden to up defence, Rock Tomb to lower opponent’s speed, then Tackle and Rock throw to do damage.

          • I played Emerald many times. Brawley was always a weird case, sometimes he wouldn’t be a problem, sometimes he’d be annoying as hell.

          • Just realised they replaced Rock Throw with Block in Emerald for Roxanne’s Nosepass. I bet they did that because of beginners struggling to beat her in RS

          • Emerald is a good game, more for its locations that anything. (And the incorporation of both Evil Teams together, and Rayquaza cut scene)

To get to Dewford you have to take a boat.
To get to Lavaridge you have to take a cable car to the top of a volcano.
            Fortree is a Treehouse City
            Mosdeep has a Space Centre
You have to dive to get to Sootopolis.
And of course Pacifidlog…floating town in the middle of the ocean

And finally..that’s right you guessed it….Battle Frontier.

Still my favourite Pokemon Game of all time.

          • Yeh, should have said Gen 3 (or more specifically Hoenn). But the convo earlier was talking about Emerald, so I just carried on from that.

          • RS didn’t have the Rayquaza aspect, In RS Rayquaza was just a dragon locked up in a tower none of the NPCs mentioned and it had absolutely zero lore to it. It was practically a secret pokemon, I only found the tower by chance.

The other stuff @Chaos mentioned is pretty much the same, but there are other things he didn’t mention that are different.

          • to be fair it was mentioned in RS just only by a few npc’s because it wasn’t the main focus of the game

          • the tower I don’t think any did, but I distinctly remember at least two npcs mentioning the flying dragon that flies high over hoenn, I think one was in pediflog and the other was in the town to the left of the daycare

          • “There is also a legend in Pacifidlog Town of a flying Dragon Pokémon that never needs to rest.” – Bulbapedia, it only refers to one pokemon and most people pretty much agree its rayquaza and even bulbapedia says this, no one says anything about the other two, and there is another npc that mentions it I just can’t remember where or id find the evidence for you

      • I liked Gardenia, Volkner and Wake.
None of them were particularly challenging but I sitll think most were designed better than the Kalos ones.

        Reply
          • Weird, I never had any problem beating her. Just get a decent Starly or something (I used my Chimchar to be fair).

          • Drifloon should be capable, Buizel would be a bit weak, Kricketune should do well, Grotle and Luxio are so so and Wormadam should be fine for Roserade.
Don’t see why she’d be an issue.

          • Krickitune was Lv. 12
Grotel, Luxio, Buizel, and Wormadam were 21
            And Drifloon was 15

            Wormadam was too slow
Grotel almost did well along with Luxio

          • Those levels are really unbalanced.
You should listen to those NPCs that say it’s bad to not train your team evenly 😛

          • I mostly do only I got tired of training Drifloon and I tried to make an anime like one and Krickitune was technically not supposed to be their but I have and brought it back

        • I never used mega evolution during the main storyline, I pretty much boxed the Lucario right off the bat because I had a better one that I used to beat hers 😛

Besides which they could have given that role to anyone and it wouldn’t have made much difference.

          • lol, is it sad that octillery is one of my fav water types? but yeah i get that its transformation is a bit jarring, as a child I always thought remorraid evolved into matine because I could never find one in the wild, I soon learned better

          • There’s nothing wrong with Octillery, it’s a good pokemon. It’s just the fact it evolves from Remoraid. I think in Gen 2 they ended up just grouping pokemon that didn’t really fit together because they didn’t want too many non-evolving pokemon. They already had Smeargle, Girafarig, Dunsparce, Qwillfish, Misdreavus, Honchkrow, Mantine and Skarmory, so I think they were getting desparate to be honest 😛

I think I evolved Remoraid by chance or noticed that Octillary was next in the dex and took a gamble. Or maybe one of the fishermen mentioned it or something.

  4. God, every time Kalos comes up I realize more and more I dislike it. Especially mountain Kalos. the whole western side of kalos is so bland and slow and I don’t like it and…

    blaaaaahhh Kalos whyyy

  5. Im not the biggest fan of the Kalos Gym leaders, I really like Clemont because of the anime, but if I had to pick one just considering the video games, then I’d say Olympia. She is elegant, mysterious, and intimidating in a way (atleast for me). I also like the fact that she had been foreshadowing Pokémon Moon’s mascot right in front of our faces from the very beginning.

    Reply
  6. Anybody think Olympia will have a part to play in sun and moon or make a cameo? I think it would be nice of they tied her to the legends some how.

  7. Olympia should’ve been the last one. She’s way more interesting than the silly ice guy.
Ps: Japanese people seem obsessed with black gym leaders being rock type.

  8. Ughhhhhh one thing peeved me was the lazy Badge names
Bug Badge, Psychic Badge, Fairy Badge,
Bug should’ve been the Shutter Badge
Psychic should’ve been the Cosmic Badge
And Fairy…..Ehhhh Pisshit Badge or Nymph Badge

        • I don’t hate them, I’m just playing on Eartherns emotions.

Although having said that, I don’t love them either, and think we could have done without.

          Reply
        • I don’t hate the type, but how man are in gen 7 already bothers me. We have around nine fairies so far (I think) one dark. And outside of Alola forms, we have no new dark or ice, and we have like 7 fairies.

          Reply
          • honestly I’ve argued many times as to why its not really all that many, and that the introduction of the ones we have are not taking away from other types but at this point I just accept that people don’t really listen to me all that often so all I will say is wait until the game comes out before you say that, because so far all we have is what gf chooses to show us and we have no idea how many pokemon are in the games, heck there could be more ice and dark then fairy once the games come out so…

    • Also why do you hate fairies so much? It’s not like they nerfed ground, if anything they buffed ground because ground counters the types good against fairy.

      Reply
        • It was always fretting over Psychic and Flying now I got to start using what little move slots for Iron Head or Poison Jab

          Reply
          • Well if it was weak to Dark, Steel, and Poison, it wouldn’t be too similar to Psychic! 😛 But I see the point. I’m still pissed it’s strong to dark AND resists Bug. Bug didn’t need that!

          • dark and bug wouldn’t make any sense though because in fairy lore fairies are tricksters and morally ambiguous, so they are not fazed by evil, but sometimes are evil themselves, and a lot of the time they live in close quarters with bugs and usually have dominance over them

      • I’ve said this many many times
I hate Fairy Type Pokemon on two different levels

The Competitive scene is now flooded with the little bastards and they’re very annoying in their own way, Azumarill’s butts high attack and access to BDrum and AJ, Togekiss and Whimsicott were annoying before but now Fairy users have access to them, Klefki are annoying, I’ve proven Slurpuff is nightmarish, and the Megas are just very powerful

And the other half is the people, I just hate all the moronic drooling nitwits who think everything should be a fairy for stupid reasons or just because we need more and more, and not for nothing the idea how hundreds blindly flocked to team fairy makes my gut churn with bile, Pikachu should be a Fairy, Camperl a fairy, any tiny cute mythical a fairy, cresselia a fairy, Milotic a fairy, you must admit that can get annoying watching them blindly want

That is why I Lord High and Mighty EarthenWarrior, Esquire do solemnly swear that I shall hate Fairy Type Pokemon for the rest of my days

        Reply
    • Shutter badge wouldn’t have made sense because it’s nothing to do with bugs, but you’re right that Bug Badge was plain. Should have been ‘Elytron’ or ‘Carapace’

  9. “Corrina”… Spell check boys! lol. Anyways, she’s my pick because she’s done the most with the player. From providing the Mega Ring and assisting with trainer. I’d say that she had the largest presence of all the leaders!

  10. I’m rather baffled with some of the comments on the Jungle. I’m confused to why X/Y and sometimes OR/AS is getting a surprising amount of hate. We were all extremely excited to play the games, but suddenly I’ve notice a dive in the amount of people who enjoy the titles. Everyone obviously could for their own opinion, but I thought X/Y/OR/AS were some solid titles. They looked amazing, had interesting battles (really needed more difficulty tho), and had some outstanding music. I’m not going to lie, I believe S/M will dwarf these titles in terms of content, gamplay, and quality. Yet, for GameFreak first drastic try to create a 3D Pokemon Game, it’s rather commendable.

    Reply
    • Because XY was ruined due to leaks from early obtained games, ORAS had literally every new feature spoiled by the company, XY had short gameplay and was too easy. ORAS lacked the post game. But even then ORAS>XY

      Reply
      • ORAS had a post game, just only one “new” place to go to. I don’t think anyone would’ve bitched about it if they had included the Battle Frontier (which should’ve been in the game)

        Reply
      • That’s completely true. Yet, I don’t know about “short gameplay”. It takes about 18 to 20 hours for me to complete the main-game of X/Y. That’s quite usually for an RPG.

        Reply
        • the game wasn’t short, people just thought it was because it hinted at something more after the main game, and when there wasn’t people look back and think that it was short

          Reply
          • I say that’s more for modern RPGs. I’ve played RPGs that have gone on to 50+ hours. Xenoblade Chronicles and X had to be some the longest I’ve played.

    • If you compare the plot in X&Y to past gens, it’s very weak. Kalos also had diversive starters, uninteresting characters, and no post game. I think ORAS were a solid remake, although not as good as G/S to HG/SS was.

      Reply
    • X/Y just seemed very rushed tbh, and it showed. Bland characters, unimportant (and not to mention, unmemorable) locations, poor story line, and way too easy. It also helps to understand that a lot of people were hyping up X/Y, and it just didn’t seem to live up to it.
I personally enjoyed them, but only as a one-time run through. S/M will definitely be a lot better from the looks of it.

      Reply
      • I understand where people are coming from. I even stated before that it felt like GameFreak focused more efforts on creating an amazing looking 3DS game over the story. Literally, Korrina and Wulfric were the only leaders with a semblance of personality. I remember a bunch of locations due to the music, but I’d say it was a good attempt at a 3D Pokemon Game. It’s obvious that S/M is going to be superior right out the gate.

        • Careful there, I thought XY were going to be the best games ever from the looks of it, and look what happened. I’ve decided to not judge SM just yet.

          Reply
        • I think a large chunk of their time went into rewriting the engine to work with 3D models instead of sprites.
People tend not to realise just how much work that actually requires, seemingly even the GF team when they were making X & Y.

          Reply
      • As someone who wasn’t keeping up with the hype, it still didn’t seem quite as good as I had hoped.
It seems like they spent too long making the 3D stuff pretty just to justify their migration to 3D.
Most of the easiness was because of the change to the Exp Share mechanic to be fair. Pokemon levelled up much much quicker.

        Reply
    • I’m surprised that you’re surprised. XY’s plot was a repeat of gen 4s, it introduced an abysmal amount of new Pokemon, it lacked any bit of difficulty, it’s signature new mechanic mega evolution felt rushed to me, and they led to the meta game of gen 6 being one of the most repetitive and bland we’ve seen in years. It was fun one time through, but I hope they never make another gen like 6. I dearly hope that SM can make up for what gen 6 lacked.

      Reply
      • I also forgot to add that I feel like they added new features just to say that they did. Mega evolution for one, but there’s also sky battles, inverse battles, and many more mechanics that had the potential to be cool, but they didn’t let them live up to their potential.

        Reply
        • Very understandable. I love Mega Evolution, but the concept did feel rushed. I don’t get the connect to Generation 4, but I would agree with random concepts being added just to have them.

          Reply
          • Well, that’s just my opinion, the plot being too similar. The way I see it, they are both using the energy of the legendary Pokemon to reset the world and create their own.

          • Ulimately the plot of every game but Kanto (and maybe Johto) is “use the legendary to force people to accept what we want the world to be like”. In Kanto is was just “steal ALL the pokemon”.

    • We were excited to watch Batman vs Superman, that doesn’t take away from how bad it was once, we actually saw it.

The same applies to these games I guess. I just feel the execution could have been better of the overall games.

Although having said that I really enjoyed the changes they made to the competitive scene, I just feel the games themselves were lacklustre.

      Reply
    • Well its kinda complicated I guess.

X and Y from the outside looked amazing. We had little story details but the game itself was visually impressive. Mega evolution and fairy type turned everything on its head. Then the game came out and story and region were both terrible compared to the greatness of Gen 4 and 5 and even 3 before. Lots of the music was repetitive and sort of annoying (Exception being Route 15 and Legendary battle them among a few others) They were way too easy, and was super bland. The story was poorly executed too.

ORAS was an improvement but still had lots of problems. It kept the easiness from X and Y and had no surprises. On top of it being a remake, anything that would surprise us was revealed before hand. Every single mega, the delta episode, contests, characters. There was nothing new to find. ORAS also suffered from blandness and I would take Emerald over it anyday.

A Z version could’ve fixed everything but instead they skipped it and went right to Sun and Moon. And while I would rather go to Alola and go back to Kalos, it just leaves gen 6 being completely mediocre

        • They shouldn’t reveal every single piece of info on the games! Trailers and reveals are supposed to hype you up and sell you on the game. They expect fans to look at reveals. Leaving no surprises outside of that is unacceptable.

        • How exactly do you not spoil yourself with officially revealed information. If most of your interests are Pokemon related, you are bound to run into spoilers, as everyone will be talking about them.

      • I’d have to disagree with the music part, I enjoyed a number of the themes from X/Y. None of them got rather annoying except Lumiose City when I got lost. lol. I like to see GameFreak fix a number of the issues Kalos had. The region had potential, but I already feel that Alola will instantly be superior.

          • Still better than all other XY Gym leaders, that says a lot. What the hell are Valerie and Olympia even doing with their lives. Smh

          • clearly, if they don’t have elegance, grace or beauty, then they better have a kick ass personality or they are too basic for me.

          • I prefer simple designs, without the over the top features (hair styles, accessories e.t.c).

That makes them seem more down to earth and realistic. The type of People that could be seen as powerful, influential figures, which is what Gym Leaders and E4 are supposed to be… ( this is why I like Steven so much, his design represents someone with power and influence)

          • I think we have a different definition of power as well, steven was fine I have no problems with his design, but I for one dislike anything thats too realistic or down to earth, I like characters that are powerful from the beginning and just keep getting stronger, I was never a fan of the normal kid who gets power thrust upon them and changes the world archetype, I always liked the “they were special from the beginning and just didn’t know it”

simple can be elegant and beautiful, and imo neither valerie or olympia are over the top (at least in pokemon standards)

          • Yeh, I’m thinking about not just Pokemon battling. I mean how well is the character known and revered to by those around him. Does the character demand respect in every appearance. I don’t like characters who are too flashy, I like the calm and collected, cool character archetype. The type that doesn’t need attention, but gets it because of who he is.

Also Valerie’s wings, and Olympias entire dress and those rings, don’t tickle my fancy.

          • different people like different things, and I can respect that, as long as you’re not referring to the characters that try too hard to be edgy and such, like Paul or Trip from the anime, god they were awful. In a very different way than ash.

          • I did not like either of those two. There’s badass, and then there’s trying to hard. Those two fit into the trying too hard.

          • Olympia looks like she should be a superhero saving people and shit. Valerie should be at comic con or something haha

          • That’s interesting. They’re generally called tank tops here, although the white ones like that are supposed to be worn under other clothes or some people wear them at night. I think it makes you look like a bit of a douche if you wear it in public, but that’s just me

          • We only call them tank tops if they’re worn as a top and not an undergarment, and even then only some people, not everyone. ‘Tank tops’ tend to be thicker though.

It’s not uncommon to see them worn instead of a shirt here during the summer. Mostly by men though. And runners wear them quite a lot too.

          • Yeah, that’s pretty much it. “Wife beaters” are like the undershirt type, and tank tops are thicker and colored, usually. Vests to us are sleeveless and usually use either a zipper or buttons. They’re typically worn with either dress suits or there are other kinds you can wear with winter clothing. They don’t see much use outside of that.

          • Possibly, they’re not very popular here though so I don’t know what people would call them. Might have the same name.

          • This is certainly not a vest my friend. If anything the proper name would be a tang top but in urban areas this specific type of shirt is known as a white beater and you can buy it from pretty much and local store for less than 4 dollars
