Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: New Features

Once more from the top

A few weeks back we brought you the latest episode of Road to ORAS, featuring on Pokémon Contests. This week we’re ushering in a new topic: New Features. As you’re probably all aware now this series has been commandeered by a certain someone, DefensiveBastiodon. He takes full credit for the below article, and you can expect to see much more from him in the future; he even asks me if he can write articles on a frequent basis!

Due to the uncertainty of when Corocoro was going to hit, we pushed the publish date of this article back to allow space to breath. As such this was written by DefensiveBastiodon before Super Secret Bases were announced for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Road to ORAS: New Features

With many years of new features being introduced to the Pokémon world, there is an exceptionally large possibility Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will adopt some of these features. From the night and day in-game effects of Gold, Silver, and Crystal, to the Player Search System in X and Y, there are many things that have a solid foundation in the future games; not that they always work as planned, of course. (*Glances at the GTS requests for level ten legendaries*) Notable features will return, as the games have been referred to as “complete remakes of the original games,” though they will obviously have a tweaked stories, as learned from released screenshots.

In game time sequences of night and day were removed from the third generation games. It was a favored feature of the second generation that allowed you to catch certain Pokémon during the day and some at night. It was brought back in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum with different times of day: morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Seeing as it has been in every game since the fourth generation, one would suspect it will make a return once again for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

The lower 3DS screen has allowed for various functions to be added to the games. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the DS’ lower screen was used for the Pokétch. In Heart Gold and Soul Silver, there seemed to be a downgrade for the lower screen. It was simply used for easy access to the menu, a run lock, and easy access to your selected key item. In Black, White, and Black and White 2, The lower screen was used for the C-Gear; the C-Gear was like an early version of the PSS in X and Y, but had a few more features such as the choppy video chat and infrared connection option. It also allowed the player to connect to the Dream World to deposit a Pokémon. X and Y expanded the C-Gear in a way that it wasn’t even called a C-Gear anymore. The Player Search System allowed players to easily connect with their friends or other players around the world. X and Y also introduced Super Training and Pokémon Amie which gave you an alternative for EV training and a way to actually interact with your Pokémon, respectively. Seeing as Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald had the PokéNav, which had various functions, a fan could only wonder how Game Freak will bring back that feature, if they do. Pokémon X and Y had some of the biggest changes to the lower screen. GameFreak has many options for exploring the bottom screen.

Super Training was a feature in X and Y that gave players an alternative to EV training. It was a mini game in which you attacked balloons with balls to score points. Once you reached a certain amount, you received a hit amount of EVs depending on which level of training you completed. Seeing as hoard battles were also introduced and more likely to progress to the next games, Super Training may not be in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Hoard training was much quicker with the Power items and was more efficient. It was, however, more difficult to fine tune stats, but super training fixed that. Both have their pros and cons, but Super Training may have a smaller life span.

Even though it obvious they are coming back, the 3D graphics need to be brought up. Previously in a 2D world, Hoenn only seemed tropical and big. Thanks to the released trailers, fans have been able to get a glimpse at how the new graphics will impact the games. These new graphics will give details to the region we’ve never noticed before, and possibly making it even bigger…

Of course, there are many other features I have left out of this discussion. Feel free to comment and discuss any new or old features you would like to see in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

  1. I wish contest costumes (the ones in corocoro) had different looks depending on gender.
Like, for boys, the cute costume is a sweater vest and the beauty costume is a tuxedo.
I mean if you want to dress your pokemon transgenderly thats fine with me ( I’ll probably end up doing it too ) but yeah different gender costumes would be nice.

    • Don’t worry, you’ll get it, just keep trying. I was about to quit looking for a shiny Litleo after 7000 random encounters, but eventually, I found her and the same day, I got a Shiny Charmander I like to think is a gift for my patience! 😀

  2. What up Birches
As for the Article i really hope we have the option to up the difficulty because though i respect Gamefreak’s ways to make our new generation of Trainers feel welcomed but to us veteran Trainers we need to be pushed harder (so hard that our schnozes are in the dirt)
But concluding the 3DS’s Dual screens they are unlimited windows of ideas, PokeNav, PSS, Amie, Super Training, but I feel they should make ST more errr logical (Where the frack is this Arena and WHO MADE IT)
But i wish they would integrate more features into the Pokenav but remember peeps its just a Pokemon Navigator not multi purpose Tech
But i hope whatever we get isn’t too much or too little

  3. Maybe I’m late, but I guess everyone saw the part in Corocoro about Pikachu turning to stone just like Ash in the first movie…

Anyway as for “new” stuff in ORAS, I think everyone stated a lot of nice features already, so I’ll state some things in X&Y that deserve to be in ORAS.

    1. O-Powers (they can call it whatever they want as long as it functions similarly)
    2. Increased Battle facility points (remember that Battle Tower/Subway and 4BP for the first 7 matches? NO MORE)
    3. A circular track for egg hatching just like Lumiose City
    4. Pokemon-Amie (pretty much confirmed but gotta state it)
    5. Destiny Knot breeding
    6. GTS (coz the original RSE didn’t) and Wonder Trade and Battle Spot and other internet features
    7. Super Training
    8. Everything new about the Pokemon battle system, breeding, etc.

Maybe they’re saving it for Sinnoh remake, but the Poketch features would be cool as well, like the pedometer and the manual counter and the timer.

      • Well, I don’t consider it a spoiler if it’s plastered all over Corocoro. I think Nintendo is using that as hype/suspense tool.

Hey look, Pikachu is in a weird color…
Changing the color of your Pokemon “confirmed”

        • That’s what I thought it was and then when I said something people went NUTS. Anyway, I like you list of ideas

          • Haha, X&Y brought a lot of new cool convenience features to Pokemon, it’d be a shame if it wasn’t like that.

I forgot to state I still want the Exp. Share, but I would prefer that it be given after the Elite 4 (or even BY the Champion himself).

      • That’s true. Before X&Y’s Battle Maison and Battle Institute, it took forever to get a Choice Band, Life Orb or some 48BP essential item before, and you had to tough it out with Pokemon holding less than great items.

Ooooh. Join Avenue would be beast with internet connectivity. Maybe even the Entree Forest. But I guess they’d save that for the inevitable BW remakes.

the problem is since their legos, i cant take it seriously sometimes XD

But, what if you could go to space and make base on the moon? And catch deoxys or Jirachi there..

  5. ORAS will be out and Gamefreak will completely forget about Hatching O-Power Level MAX… but I remember, Gamefreak. I remember…

  6. I know I shouldn’t be talking about Sinnoh and I’m really sorry if I annoy someone but when Sinnoh gets remade they should still keep the GTS building because it has the best track in the game IMO.

  7. I’d almost bet at least these 3 megas will be revealed in next corocoro: Camerupt, Sharpedo, and Milotic. I think we’ll get about 6 or so total

  9. I have no problem with xenoblade and pacman being in smash, but the fact that nintendo is completely overlooking one of ITS OWN characters to be in smash is completely annoying. Daisy is a really unique character, and she’s just awesome.
They took her away as peach’s alternate costume in brawl.
    100% unfair.
at least waluigi gets to be an assist trophy.

  10. One thing I’d like to see in ORAS’s GTS is some feature which would make you able to ask only for Pokémon of the same rarity as the one you’re offering up for trade, so people don’t ask for Reshiram level 10 and under for a Scatterbug.
