Road to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: New Features

Once more from the top

A few weeks back we brought you the latest episode of Road to ORAS, featuring on Pokémon Contests. This week we’re ushering in a new topic: New Features. As you’re probably all aware now this series has been commandeered by a certain someone, DefensiveBastiodon. He takes full credit for the below article, and you can expect to see much more from him in the future; he even asks me if he can write articles on a frequent basis!

Due to the uncertainty of when Corocoro was going to hit, we pushed the publish date of this article back to allow space to breath. As such this was written by DefensiveBastiodon before Super Secret Bases were announced for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Road to ORAS: New Features

With many years of new features being introduced to the Pokémon world, there is an exceptionally large possibility Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will adopt some of these features. From the night and day in-game effects of Gold, Silver, and Crystal, to the Player Search System in X and Y, there are many things that have a solid foundation in the future games; not that they always work as planned, of course. (*Glances at the GTS requests for level ten legendaries*) Notable features will return, as the games have been referred to as “complete remakes of the original games,” though they will obviously have a tweaked stories, as learned from released screenshots.

In game time sequences of night and day were removed from the third generation games. It was a favored feature of the second generation that allowed you to catch certain Pokémon during the day and some at night. It was brought back in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum with different times of day: morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Seeing as it has been in every game since the fourth generation, one would suspect it will make a return once again for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

The lower 3DS screen has allowed for various functions to be added to the games. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the DS’ lower screen was used for the Pokétch. In Heart Gold and Soul Silver, there seemed to be a downgrade for the lower screen. It was simply used for easy access to the menu, a run lock, and easy access to your selected key item. In Black, White, and Black and White 2, The lower screen was used for the C-Gear; the C-Gear was like an early version of the PSS in X and Y, but had a few more features such as the choppy video chat and infrared connection option. It also allowed the player to connect to the Dream World to deposit a Pokémon. X and Y expanded the C-Gear in a way that it wasn’t even called a C-Gear anymore. The Player Search System allowed players to easily connect with their friends or other players around the world. X and Y also introduced Super Training and Pokémon Amie which gave you an alternative for EV training and a way to actually interact with your Pokémon, respectively. Seeing as Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald had the PokéNav, which had various functions, a fan could only wonder how Game Freak will bring back that feature, if they do. Pokémon X and Y had some of the biggest changes to the lower screen. GameFreak has many options for exploring the bottom screen.

Super Training was a feature in X and Y that gave players an alternative to EV training. It was a mini game in which you attacked balloons with balls to score points. Once you reached a certain amount, you received a hit amount of EVs depending on which level of training you completed. Seeing as hoard battles were also introduced and more likely to progress to the next games, Super Training may not be in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Hoard training was much quicker with the Power items and was more efficient. It was, however, more difficult to fine tune stats, but super training fixed that. Both have their pros and cons, but Super Training may have a smaller life span.

Even though it obvious they are coming back, the 3D graphics need to be brought up. Previously in a 2D world, Hoenn only seemed tropical and big. Thanks to the released trailers, fans have been able to get a glimpse at how the new graphics will impact the games. These new graphics will give details to the region we’ve never noticed before, and possibly making it even bigger…

Of course, there are many other features I have left out of this discussion. Feel free to comment and discuss any new or old features you would like to see in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

  1. REMEMBER: Keep comment spam down. Keep your replies thoughtful and insightful.

Comments are not a chat room. With articles like this we like to read the replies people give to make the series better. Looking over comments that are mostly complete nonsense is difficult.

  2. I guess a feature I would like to return would be something like the pokeathlon. I really enjoyed it in HG/SS more than 4th gen’s version of the battle frontier, simply because I felt Hoenn’s battle frontier couldn’t be replaced in my heart. I liked picking different teams for different events. I couldn’t get to the Supreme cup, but it was fun trying!

    • As for new features… I think it would be cool to participate in online Pokemon contests. Even though I’m SURE there would be people who rage quit off that, I think it would be cool. And instead of putting the ribbons from these contests onto your pokemon, thy could go on your trainer card?

    • Ohhh? I love the pokeathlon as well! My fav games would have to be the soccer game and the circle push( where you push Pokemon off the stadium) much fun.

  3. One feature I feel needs to come back is tracking roaming legends on the bottom screen so I don’t have to go through 7 menus to find that the legendary has moved.

  4. I’ll repeat my wish list since it’s more appropriate here:
Wish list of returning/new features in ORAS:
    -Move tutors
-MOVE THE IV JUDGE TO THE DAYCARE
    -Horde
    -Apricorn PokeBalls
-Super Training (mainly for the reset bag)
-Berry field (I’ve seen screenshot of isolated berries. I want them all in one place. ;~:)
-VS. Seeker or some other device to re-challenge NPC and Gym Leaders.
-Pokeball Seals for contests and outside of contest. :3
    -Battle Frontier.
-Unlimited TM, HM are forgettable on the spot.
-Return of Dive and Underwater Battles.

    • There was a berry farm in the originals like berry fields. Im sure it will return. Vs. Seeker is unneeded because the PokéNav actually did that. It told you the location as well. My favorite Nav feature.

  6. What I would like to see return (my raving about the Pokétch will have to wait until the Hoenn Hype has died down), is the ability to organize items in my Bag. I know it’s minor, but that’s one of the little things I loved about BW and B2W2. I also want the Free Space Bag to return from B2W2. I put my competitive items in there. The last thing I want to return, is the Pokéballs Bag. I like glancing at the pokéballs I’ve gathered in their own special place.

  7. Hmm, features I’d like to see introduced and/or modified:

Difficulty setting. No explanation needed, just fcking do it Game Freak.

Wi-Fi Battling: I want a spectator mode, where if you’re going to challenge someone to a battle, you then get to choose to invite spectators from your friends list only, and they can choose whether to accept or decline.
In addition to that, I want Game Chat to be available for Multi Battles as well

Super Training: It should be re-organized imo. Small = 4, Medium = 12, Large = 24. Doing Rank 1 should yield only Small Bags, Double-up Bags, or Reset Bags. Doing Rank 2 should yield only Medium Bags, Double-up Bags, or Reset Bags. And you see the pattern for what Rank 3 should yield.

Re-battling Gym Leaders: This is one of my favorite features in a Pokemon game and one that should be a staple in the series by now. I love being able to re-battle the Gym Leaders from the game, and seeing what new Pokemon they have. However, X/Y did a half-assed job at this in letting you re-battle them randomly in Battle Chateau. But they only had 2/3 Pokemon. I want a return to what HG/SS did, where you can call Gym Leaders to a certain place, and battle them with a full team.

I can go into more, but this is already long enough xD

    • I unfortunately cant up vote this more than once ;~; couldn’t have said it any better or agree more with you 🙂 go into more detail please D:

    • I also think the music should completely die down whenever I use Game Chat (in battles, of course). I sometimes have trouble hearing what the other person says…

And I agree with pretty much everything in this post, ESPECIALLY the difficulty setting. I just hope it doesn’t work like how it did in BW2, too gimmicky. -_-

    • Preach that good word TC. This was a great read. Literally every single thing you wrote I would love to see implemented, specially how much the ST bags give ya – was just stating this to a friend that they need a buff.

  9. Features I want to Return and to be Added:
    – Horde Battles; immensely helpful with EV training while still capable of leveling up Pokemon
    – Sky Battles: creative style of battling although I want it to be more elaborated and built upon
    – Dive Battles: creative style of battling
    – Delta Cup/whatever you want to call it: a tournament for the best trainers
    – Battle Frontier: another creative twist to everyday battles
    – VS Seeker: LOVED it in HG/SS and D/P/P
    – Berry Farm: a farm dedicated to growing different kinds of berries
    – Contests: my love for Hoenn originated from contests and I want contests to make the comeback of the Century
    – Poke’ball Seals: I want them to be viable outside and inside of contests, more seals to choose from
    – Move Tutors: *almost* guaranteed but I still want them
    – A Pokemon Sports Competition: similar to the one in HG/SS but with more embellishments and rules to truly make it seem like a sports event
    – Fusion Moves: ONLY for contests, certain moves when used with others will create a new move (Only for Double and Triple Contest Comp.)
    – Department Store: self explanatory
    – Challenge Modes: Easy/Normal/Hard/Legend (new mode)
    – Mega Competition: viable for Pokemon capable of Mega-Evolving
    – Phone: a phone-like system that let’s you call and be called
    – Unlimited TM, HM: self explanatory
    – More Mega Pokemon: self explanatory
    – Super Training: tedious but the bags you get for accomplishing certain tasks are worth the effort… and time
    – More Items: unique items to allow players for more creativity and to piss off Smogon… (sorry, a little too much?)
    – School Battles: underwater equivalent of Horde Battles (Got it from Heavy’s post today)
    – Shiny Pokemon chances DECREASED (increase the number): it’s become TOO easy to get these deemed ULTRA RARE Pokemon
    – Pokemon Amie: amazing way to spend time with Pokemon, more features, ability to download mini-games
    – Pokemon Musical + Contests: WOULD LOVE IT
    – Dressing up Pokemon with costumes… permanently (:D): would be an awesome feature if they deduct the ability to customize protagonists and give that ability to Pokemon

More but already, this list is WAY too long! 😀

  10. Every now and then I encounter idiots on Showdown. He offered me a 6IV shiny Vivillon and said he highly doubts that it’s hacked. I replied with “I highly doubt that it’s NOT hacked.” And then he went on about me being rude, sarcastic, on crack. And I assure you, I was not like he said.

  11. Playing the Battle Frontier with friends over Wifi. I dunno if this feature was around back in Emerald or not, but it would fun to do the battle facilities with a friend. Especially things like the Pyramid…it would be like co-op mode.

  12. Am I the only one who hates that you can catch different pokemon at night and morning? It’s more realistic but it’s SO ANNOYING. Super Training needs to return though. It’s so useful.

  13. I can’t stress this enough but…

THEY NEED TO FIX UP THE PSS FOR ORAS, I HATE IT WHEN I GET RANDOM ERRORS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN AWESOME BATTLE

    That’s all I wanted to say c:

  14. OMFG, one thing they NEED to add as a new feature. As a competitive battler, I am so sick and tired of pre-evolution only moves. These should be re-learnable via the Move Reminder even after evolving.

  15. Something I want back that is highly unlikely:

    Join Avenue

Do you even understand how many people that it helped with pokemon leveling, berries, and more? I never got so many pokemon to lv100 that fast in my life.

  16. While reflecting back on B2W2, I noticed something those games introduced that I really liked, but for some reason, was scrapped in XY. Unique Gym Themes. I want them to return so badly. It made the gyms even more fun than they already were.
