Whoever gives the best type coverage defensively. For example, if you have a Steel Type, Ice Type, and Rock type in your party, DON’T pick Exploud because all four of them would be weak to Fighting.

Well actually I’ve never replayed older gens. The reason could be I play the hell out of each gen as it came out and then get burned out…
Gen 3/Sapphire: First game. Always picked Swampert. Got all the Regi’s, Lati’s. Got ALL the contest ribbons on my Milotic, highest rank in all categories. Game was lost. Didn’t play Emerald or FRLG.
Gen 4/Pearl: Infernape. All the legends possible without events. Tore apart the Battle Tower. Got ALL the contest ribbons and daily ribbons on (another) Milotic, highest rank in all categories. Game was sold. Didn’t play Platinum or HGSS.
Gen 5/White 1: All the starters sucked, but settled on Emboar. Got all the legends possible. Got all items possible in Pokemon Musical (I love me my contests y’know.) First taste of competitive battling. Hacked me some competitive movesets. Trashed the Battle Subway. Didn’t play B2W2. Moved on to simulators afterwards. Game’s still with me, will be sold once DS Wifi is dead in May.
Gen 6/Both X&Y: Delphox. Got all birds and available legends. Wrecked the Battle Maison. Lamented the lack of contests. Caught ’em all for the first time. Play simulators occasionally. Read competitive battling articles on Smogon and Nugget Bridge periodically. Feeling the burnout again.
Team Aqua = Badass Pirates
Team Magma = Cute Bears
Do I even need to justify why I prefer Team Aqua?

Well I’ll have to agree with the Water-type preference. 🙂
Sapphire was my only Gen 3 game, so I got “attached” to Aqua without a chance to battle Magma. Right now though, let me compare the two teams:
1. Outcome of their plans:
a. Magma – There will be more land, drought that will kill a lot of people due to famine eventually.
b. Aqua – There will be less land, flood that will kill a lot of people within days.
WINNER – Aqua, immediately more devastating.
2. Clothes:
a. Magma – Look like dogs. I hate red.
b. Aqua – Look like prates. I don’t dislike blue.
WINNER – Aqua due to color bias.
3. Goals:
a. Magma – More land for land Pokemon.
b. Aqua – More water for water Pokemon.
WINNER – Tie. Both goals are lame-o. Ok, both teams do crimes to achieve those. Now where’s the world domination? World resetting? Releasing all Pokemon except the evil team’s own? Nuking an entire region from a safe bunker? Cutting off slowpoke tails? 🙂
4. Grunt and Admin Pokemon:
WINNER – Tie. Both teams use the same generic common “evil team” Pokemon with disregard for their team’s theme. Unless you love Sharpedo in Aqua, which I really don’t fancy much.
5. Legendary Pokemon
a. Magma – Groudon
b. Aqua – Kyogre
WINNER – Aqua. Who cares about Groudon in Ubers anyway. And Water type > Ground type. And you absolutely cannot switch Groudon into Kyogre. This is Scarf Kyogre BTW. Let’s just say that Surf is being used because Water Spout or Ice Beam is all too painful for Groudon.
“252 SpA Kyogre Surf vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Groudon in Sun: 176-210 (43.5 – 51.9%) — guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery”
Meanwhile, Groudon has no super-effective moves to beat up Kyogre.

Sadly, Groudon is the loser in most cases, whether in type, moves list, ability and usage. The only thing great about Groudon is that it’s a Physical attacker in a tier full of Special attackers.

I was never for ether team really. The only thing that I liked about Team Aqua was the color of there costumes and the whole pirate theme, and the only thing that I liked bout Team Magma’s costumes was the fact that the hoods looked like they had cat ears on them to me, and I liked the black and red theme. That’s about it. (Although I tend to have an extreme disliking PERIOUD toward any villain. There are only a few villains that I actually kinda like.)
As much as I like blue, I like Team Magma more. They look cooler.
