Journey Back to Hoenn – Roar of Time: Generation III

It seems like only yesterday I started the Journey to X & Y article series, when in actuality it’s fast approaching six months since I did! Admittedly the inferno of hype for X & Y has flickered down into a smouldering cinder, but that’s expected, the games are out. Many of our readers enjoyed the articles we ran last year, and we’ve decided to continue the generation weeks we failed to complete before the release of the games. They’ll be a little different however—just a title change really, but still a heap of fun!

In Roar of Time we asked our readers what they would add to older games, if they gained the ability to travel back in time and make any change or additions they wanted. This time round it’s the same deal! If you could take control of Dialga and morph time back to the early development stages of Ruby and Sapphire (or any of the other Third Generation games!), what would you change? What would you take away? What would you add?

We don’t want you to be too outrageous here, keep things realistic. You could also pick something completely obvious, but what’s the fun in that? As we said in the first article don’t forget to consider how your change or addition would have an effect on the future of Pokémon games.

Get those brains working and tell us your ideas, we’ll be featuring our favourites in the next Roar of Time (who can guess what that will focus on?)

Please remember to Like us on Facebook and Follow us on Twitter! Or, if forums are your thing register on our forums, we always look forward to new members joining!

As a side note, please, please try to control your commenting on this article, when it comes to finding content for featuring it becomes very difficult if I have to filter through 1,000 comments saying you’re home from school, or asking if anyone is ‘here’. We have a chat, please use it!

  1. Since Hoenn introduced Double Battles, I’d make the Champion battle a Double Battle against Steven Stone and Wallace! That means I would’ve introduced Juan in R/S instead of Emerald XD
    Some other things I’d change:
    – Getting to battle Brendan/May when they have a fully evolved starter
    – Give Wally the Rival Battle music
    – Exchange Sceptile’s Attack stat with its Special Attack stat
    – Add night and day again, something that was in Gen 2 game but failed to be an aesthetic in Gen 3
    – Not add BRAILLE to a video game
    – Introduce an Eeveelution or two
    – Introduce the physical/special move split in THIS gen instead of Gen 4

Otherwise, I’d keep everything else the same, especially the:
    – The music, the trumpets and timpani, the beautiful melodies that sound all across this region <3
    – The plot. I really liked having two teams and seeing them fight each other, that was really unique!
    – And finally, secret bases. This is without question one of my favorite features ever implemented in a Pokemon game. Being able to make a secret hangout anywhere in Hoenn, mix records with friends, and be able to battle them at their secret base with the team they had. Not only was it a great way for experience, but getting to decorate your own and go hunting for your friends, it's an idea I wish they would really bring back =/

    • *claps* omfg hands down best comment XD

I just realized Brendan/May never reached their final evolution. Wow. And switching Sceptile’s stats would’ve been nice, hopefully they can switch them for its Mega (if it gets one) lol.

And for some reason, Leafeon/Glaceon feel like they were gen 3 to me lol.

      • I always hated getting to Lilycove because I knew I’d never battle May again :'(

Another idea I had was you know when Brendan/May run into the Champion’s room after you beat the Champ? What if they acted surprised it was over already, and then challenge you to a battle right then and there?

    • I would have loved to see a way to access the water routes early, say before getting to watson and allow us to head out into the water a lot quicker. Even if it’s just a ferry ride, it allows a way to make the game not so landlocked for the first 3/4 of the game and the last 1/4 out at sea especially with diving.

I’m again routing for times to pop up and with seasons a thing now it’ll be even cooler looking graphically in Hoenn.

I would love to see some more of the native islands around be habited and that you could visit a new neighboring island that would give access to even more training and other missions to do there! Having a “elite 4” for the contests ala the anime, there could be a resort island for the finale of it instead of the larger hall in Lilycove.

I am dying for the white rock mission where we could possibly have a mini mission to do with it! Heck more mini-missions in general would add longevity to a game that is already fantastic to play through over and over! I can’t wait to imagine the Fortree City where you get to be in the trees! Of course, adding depth and more to the cities would make them feel bigger then how they appeared in the originals.

My vote for the gyms is to have stronger and more variety of the newer pokemon, and for wallace and juan to be the duo champions of the region. I’d love to see a new type for Sootopolis City especially if the two of them are champions rather than leaders. Having Steven as the leader would be a fun twist, but I’d prefer Steven to challenge you ala Red but found in a couple of rare places. I’d replace his Claydol with Lucario or give him more steel types instead.

I’d give Wally a bigger role where you battle him more often. I love the idea of his character, plus Gardevoir was one of my favorite additions besides Swampert and co. I’d have Brendan/May a much larger role and have them battle you more than Wally. That or have a bigger contest role like the manga has for them so Wally could compete with you on badges while the others are going through contests.

Bringing the Battle Frontier is a given, and hopefully the plot of Emerald would be used for both. that was the coolest seeing both hideouts, getting to find not just one, but all 3 legendary pokemon. I want to see a third rival come to shake up the Frontier with you, just to give the game more depth.

Because of the way the plot was laid out there really wasn’t a focus in a lot of the cities. I would give more missions to explore the bigger versions with more to find, and make the game more immersive in terms of route options and allowing you to access new parts of the game. Secret meadows, hidden underwater coves, frosty mountains, the desert castle, the underground desert, the depths of the caves, and possibly more out in the water secrets to find.

I love this generation and I felt these would make it the best game ever. <3

  2. Perhaps the only thing I would like to improve is the true Champion. People usually say Steven, but I don’t know. Maybe a battle between the two, one that you can watch, could have settled it.

    • Steven was to present in emerald because he was dead, the manga explains the whole story but if I remember it goes like this

Somewhere the Regis had awoken and started to go mental so Steven and Brandon(that pyramid guy if that’s not his name) was trying to tame them, eventually he died but when the Regis was calmed they brought him back to life and it explains why Brandon has the Regis

  3. So I have 3 shiny pokemon obtained via MM for those who place 1st 2nd and 3rd. 1sr gets to pick one out of the 3 pokemon they desire 2nd chooses out of the 2 leftover and 3rd gets the remaining shiny. Rare berries, Ability capsules and Leftovers will be given out as runner up prizes!

  4. Building on earier about encountering kyogre underwater it should be stationary roaming, so there are crevices in the ocean and if you swim over one there’s a chance kyogre is in one and will rise up and fight you

In groudons case there are various pools of magma around in deep caves roughly about 3/4 (same goes for kyogre) where he rises from the magma

  5. If your opponent is doing anything or using anything against the rules tell me and it will an automatic disqualification but I’ll have to watch the battle videos to confirm anything.

  7. Sorta Off Topic: I’d like to receive starters from friends from now on in future games since it’s a trend now.

  8. Just noticed that Nintendo missed the perfect April Fools troll for SSB4. They could have showed Dark Pit (AKA Pittwo) as a “new” character.
