Nintendo Discontinuing WiFi Connection for DS & Wii

Nintendo has announced its plans to shut down WiFi services for its older Nintendo DS and Wii consoles. Games that utilize the service for online multiplayer will no longer be able to access those functions. The Internet browser for both platforms will be unaffected, as will the Wii Shop, DSi Shop, and Hulu Wii app. The service will be disconnected on May 20.

Pokémon Games affected:

  • Diamond, Pearl & Platinum
  • HeartGold & SoulSilver
  • White, Black, White 2 & Black 2
  • Mystery Dungeon games
  • Pokémon Battle Revolution

Other popular games such as Animal Crossing: Wild World and Mario Kart DS will all be affected so make sure to do everything you want to before the shutdown deadline!

Anyone mourning the loss of multiplayer on the DS or Wii?

  1. Wow they really are doing EVERYTHING to try and stop hacking…. seems a tad radical though seeing as BW2 are barely 2 years old….also very unfair for those that don’t have a 3DS and for those that buy these games brand new (still sold at retail price in many stores) who do not know about this rather significant change.

  2. I mourn the loss of Wi-Fi on the DS. I like playing online multiplayer battle on my White and White 2. Does this also mean no more GTS?

  3. As heavy stated, i feel as this is to stop people from getting Pokemon through the GTS and by changing their DNS in the DS games. People would do this and their hacked pokemon would get through Transport. All they had to do was improve their check. It is unfortunate for those who still play DS gen pokemon games and want to battle their friends through wi-fi.But i guess it’s time for them to upgrade if they haven’t already.

PS (So as to not make multiple posts) : For the Pokejungle Community Fan Game (Jade Jungle) , We only need a few more votes for the Fire Starter (In general) and Fire Gym Town (Name). If you haven’t voted already. Please vote. If you have voted already, please do not vote.

      • There isn’t much that’s special about the flash carts other than their ability to play games. xD So i’m not sure what you mean and There is nothing they can do about it on the DS anymore. As for the 3DS, I hope they update a patch to stop the device that shall not be named. ATLEAST for Pokemon or keep the amount of cheats limited. Having cheats to include battle advantages online is unfair. Walking through walls is just for fun.

          • I heard that AR pokemon are blocked though 😮 my friend Saul told me that his little brother tried to send over AR pokemon through Transporter and saw no results. So it looks like there’s nothing to worry about.

        • even if I obtain the device that shall not be named,I wouldn’t use it for inline advantages I still IV ad ev train my pokemon like usually . Walking through walls and stuff like that is fun and doesn’t really hurt society

          • I was basically saying that the cheats should be limited to things that will cause people to have fun (Walking through walls) rather than exploiting the game and ruining the fun for others (Ex: The Battle Cheats: HP 9999 or something)

          • That’s why I said “PS” is different from “AR” because AR you have to stick in your DS and spawn unfair cheats like Max evs every stat etc, but “PS” can’t do none of that. It doesn’t connect to your DS, it connects to your PC with the cartridge in it and “modifies” the save. They don’t have cheats like that only stuff that u can tweak your save file with, like money, BP’s, legendaries, but not 9999 HP etc

  4. Wow in an ironic note when they a pounced they will discontinue nintendo wifi , my actual wifi isn’t working ;~; so I can’t watch tv or use wifi … That leaves masuda time 😀

  6. Sure this helps with the whole hacking situation for Pokémon, but I don’t think that’s what Nintendo is going for here at all. They would never make a company decision like this on one of their products that they only have 50% control of. Rather, I think it’s a smart move. It will force people to purchase the newer hardware.

  7. So, it wouldn’t work to just connect your DS game on 3DS wifi? That’s what I did on Black, because the DS won’t connect to WPA2, only WEP, which is much less secure and easily hacked, so I’ve heard.

  8. Why are they doing this? I still play the old games such as pokemon black and white? I don’t think I am the only one. Oh well I guess they want more money for people to buy the new system. I guess what is next is that they want us to pay for the wifi service.

  9. WTF guys this has nothing to do with cheating. They just can’t afford to pay server costs for rarely used features forever. They have to stop at some point and they saw that the Wii and DS are becoming irrelevant enough now.

  10. I’m so glad they’re aren’t shutting down XY, eventhough BW was really good. I already transferred my pokemon, so I’m cool with it,

  11. Yeah miniryu its sad for them, but it really won’t stop hacking. Only the nintendo server won’t work. By changing the DNS, you connect to a different server. So you can still use stuff like pokecheck.
