We Proudly Present: Retry Level

Long ago, back in the year 2013, Samual (moving), Sam and I discussed our mutual love of gaming outside of Pokémon and talked about opening a site that covered all gaming news. Although I bought the domain in March of last year, I didn’t start working on it for several months. We opened up the forum to some members from Mt. Moon Community and our Facebook page (fan perks I guess) and got some initial feedback. Then I got busy again and we started covering news related to Pokémon X & Y. After that was over though… and our semester had finished… we began work again on the site. I had wanted to reveal this on the first of January, but we decided we wanted more time to fix things 🙂

What is Retry Level?

A community-centric gaming site

Although there are a lot of game news sites out there, I felt that they lacked a real sense of community integration. Over the years, PokéJungle (the site, not me) has really inspired me to focus on new media in a way which draws the reader in and makes them a part of the site they’re visiting. To this end we’ve created a gaming site which will (eventually) feature content hubs based on both news AND community threads. They will open in several weeks after we’ve had time to fill up the forum a little.

An independent unbiased source of news and commentary

There’s also the issue of independence which is an important one for me personally. I’m not a fan of sites which are run by large corporations and are driven by how much profit they can milk out of their media properties. I’m not interested in plastering ads on every inch of Retry Level and I want our team to be able to fairly review and comment on games without working about reprisal from advertisers. There have been several incidences on gaming sites in which a reviewer’s score has been called into question.

What are some cool features?

Steam integration

We’ve invested in some plugins which allow our members to login with their Steam IDs, as well as areas of the site on which you can view other gamers who are currently online and what they’re playing. Big plus for PC gamers (like myself).

Twitch integration

Game streaming has become a phenomenon. We allow our members to add their own streams so other members can watch and comment on them. Currently the PC and PlayStation 4 support Twitch streaming and the Xbox One will as well within several months.

News from your favorite PJN staffers!

If you like how we do things here, you’re going to love Retry Level as well 🙂 The tone is a bit more professional, but we’re definitely the same writers and with the same intense passion for Pokémon and gaming! A cool thing about Retry Level for us is that we’ll get to see some of our regular commenters here also post on our gaming site. Which will make us very happy 😀

We’re just getting started!

It’s true! So don’t hesitate to offer feedback! We’re guided by your opinions so be sure to share them. This is definitely an exciting time for us and we’re very happy to be branching out into the general gaming field. I hoping you all will support us and help Retry Level to become a successful gaming news site that rivals any of them currently out there. We can do it!

Thanks for all the support, not just in this endeavor, but also right here at PokéJungle. Without the experience of running this site and the encouragement of all my visitors I wouldn’t be who I am today. I really owe you all a lot and everyone here means so much to me. You guys are great!

<3 PJ

  1. Tired of the Japan favoritism. I honestly thought it was going to end when the games were released WW for a change.

Not fare that they get O Power’s Max that last 60 minutes. I swear if the US doesn’t get these I’ll break my X.

      • It really does. They so far managed to get

-Bank (for the ones that managed to get it before it got removed)
-Eeveelution Events that come with new move “Celebrate”
-Inkay Events that come with new move “Happy Hour”
        -Max O Power
-Jirachi Event (jirachi is going to win that poll)

and America gets their crappy leftovers. We only got Smeargle with Happy Hour and that isn’t even a fricken event!!!! It’s the poop that an event made… 🙁

        • There are, surprisingly, some stuff we get before Japan. Albeit anime related, we DID get The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon six months before Japan did.

  3. I’m so angry at Japanese favoritism that one time, I showed off one of my Shiny Pokémon to a Japanese Acuaintance. He wanted it so badly that he was EVEN willing to give up his Mewtwo holding Mewtwonite Y for it. I declined his offer and he rage quit. I was so happy.

Don’t worry everyone, that was in December, and my rage at Japan has diminished slightly. I’ll never be a jerk to any of you, I promise. 😉

    • Daily, likely multiple times daily. There’s hell of a lot of general gaming news to cover, and while we won’t post all of it we will post a lot!

  4. I’m glad there is a new Gaming News Site. I got tired of GamesRadar (if that’s what they’re still called) because their articles were annoying to read, the Examiner always has false information, and others are usually pretty behind on info… I hope RetryLevel continues to offer all things great like PokéJungle and more!

  5. So is it safe to say that shiny charm effects MM? I was reading last night that Smogon had begun a project where they are hatching 50K eggs, and at 5000 eggs they already hatched 15 shinies.

That means around every 300 or so they found a shiny.

    • I actually found it easier to find a egg shiny without shiny charm.
It’s almost like it reversed my chances lol

but I did manage to catch 6 fish shinies in 1 night so I know it definitely helped in that aspect

  6. Mini-editorial
The reason why Bank has not yet been released in the US and EU but already in Japan can be attributed to some simple facts.
First, we know that server capacity is unsufficient for giant peaks. Know that a server just crashes once it reaches its maximum capacity, making peaks the things you want to avoid. The West saw a great number of new 3DS owners that put strain on all general servers. Releasing it in the holidays was just a bad idea seeing as you get a peak from a new launch in addition to one from everyone using the system. Therefore, they have to wait till the big boom is over and all is quieter.
Waiting longer also means several things. Japan’s usage will go down over the weeks once everyone finishes transfering their most important Pokémon. Just blocking Japan too will give a big peak again when opening it to everyone. It also means they can stress test the servers and kink out all operating bugs/glitches (and trust me, maintaining a service is a lot of work in the background).

But what they should’ve done is Google’s method of releasing things: exponential release. First, a small number of people can access the service, letting the devs know if there are important bugs to be fixed. From then on, a slightly larger group gain access until almost everyone has access within the span of two weeks. This would be based on a random dice roll check when entering the eshop, done once a day. This really helps to spread out all the users, giving access to everyone in a timely manner.

It doesn’t have anything to do with ‘Japan favoritism’. It’s a market big enough to fully test but not too large to let everything fail. Putting it out for one market at the beginning just makes more sense. And that market being your home market is just natural. Microsoft releases things first in America too, and French companies things first in France just as well. Choosing an other market first just makes no sense to me actually.

So relax, Bank will come. You (hopefully) won’t have died by that time :).
